That “playlist of car alarms” line is pure gold
Now I'm inspired to actually do that :D
I’m gonna have that music as my ringtone
So it compells you to answer quickly? 😂
Sounds like the music was trying really hard to compete with 1942 for the WHY?! award.
This channel has gone 0 days without an Xevious reference.
I understood your Jeremy Parish reference.
Xevious is one of those like Hydlide that was so specific to the name when it came out that, of played in later contexts, feels like a relic.
Both got releases in America after games that greatly built upon them had been available.
Still, I can appreciate Xevious' simplicity and approachability... as long as I have some headphones and a playlist of Ys and Xenoblade music xD
Xevious was in the arcades like any other game, at the same time. Who knew there was a Nintendo release?
It's dangerous. It's devicus. It's Xevious!
XEVIOUS is apparently pronounced "Zeh-Vii-Uh-s".
The katakana representation of the name is ゼビウス (Romanized Japanese would be "Zebiusu").
An incomplete fictional language ("Xevian" or "the language of Xevi") was created to give the game's story and background more depth and each of the enemies was named using the language. The language features special line-based characters for numerals based on hexadecimal values, with each line's position representing a binary value (0, 1, 2, 4, and 8).
Even when I was a little kid I thought Xevious was kinda lacking since I had games like Sky Shark, Image Fight, Abadox, and Zanac but it's understandable now that I realize how old the game actually was when I first played it.
My friend and I used to play this on my Atari 7800 back in the day. 30+ years ago.
This music needs to become my alarm clock! Ha! Have a great one!

Love the reviews but I definitely wait for that last line to see what you're going to say and you didn't disappoint! "As always, don't point guns at your face." 😂😂😂
Hey dude, your videos are so cheeky I get the happiest giggle farts after watching each one. Thanks brahsef
Haha you're welcome...?
Nice vid. This game grew on me.
Happy Wednesday everyone!
Xevious is one of the most important arcade games and is largely responsible for the rise of the scrolling schmup, even if it was just "a game" in the west.
As a NES game it's very slight, which makes sense when you consider it was a 1984 Famicom release. When released in Japan it was an excellent home port and a draw to the Famicom.
The NES did not launch in the west with many of the popular Golden Age arcade game that were already on Famicom. Some like Dig Dug or Space Invaders never made it over. Some like Galaga, Xevious, or Pac-Man came over late enough that the tech for the cart was dated compared to new games.
Nice choice for the font & color at the end.
When the arcade was relatively old, mid 80s, I got to play it and I was not a fan. I even got a copy for my Atari ST some time later, perhaps 1988 or so and still not a fan. No idea why. I don't remember, the ST port was fine, the original was obviously fine. I got to play it again years later, early 2000s or 2010s, and I liked it a lot. Funny thing is, it was a one of those plug and play games for TV. The one that had the Pac-Man shape. Ever since, I like this game.
Unfortunately I never got to play the NES port (or most NES games as I never owned one), but this looks fine to me.
I actually like the music in this game. I kid you not.
I also like the music in Dig-Dug and Moon Patrol.
Thanks for a good video.
I can dance to that music
I could too... if I were also being electrocuted!
Great review as always!
Great vids. Great sense of humour
Happy Wednesday everybody.
love Hump Days
I just want to meet someone whose favorite game is Xevious
What you gonna ask them first?
Of course your ship shows no damage when hit: one hit and you're dead.
Yeah, that OST is painful.
How brave to even call it an OST!
It's more preferable to 1942.
Father of vertical shooters? What about River Raid?
The console grandfather of the vertical shooter!
But compare the Japanese exclusive SUPER XEVIOUS, only found on the Famicom (no resemblance to the arcade game of the same name, nor to any of the PC Engine sequels).
Vertical shooter with awful car alarm music and a unique history of being one of the first shooters with bosses?
...Now I'm having horrible flashbacks of Taito's Phoenix.
I was going to say how surprised I was listening to the title screen theme, sounds like a Depeche Mode dark chiptune. Then the stage song came in and they don't really match at all
Please do Battletoads. And Double Dragon... And Battletoads and Double Dragon
I could never get into Xevious. Lot of reasons, but that tinny micro looping music is absolutely horrid.
