My dad randomly gave me this one day when I was home from school very sick. I think he was saving it for a birthday or something, and he felt bad for me. I played it for quite a while, but since I didn't have the patience to write down notes or make a map, I just wound up going back and forth and doing circles trying and failing to find my way through the plot. It wasn't until a lot of years later that I got online and found a guide to tell me where to go and finally beat it. I dunno, I'd probably like it more if I'd done that from the start, but now I always remember it as that game where I got lost running back and forth across the maps in a feverish haze, and I can't shake that.

This was top 3 favorite NES games for me when I was 10 years old. I remember having to grab a notepad to write down the paths and where to go next. I had never done that before with my more simplistic games and it really opened me up to a whole new genre. Love to see it covered here!

A+ video, I appreciated the amount of sass and laughed a lot. This is like what my memory of watching AVGN videos in the late 2000s was. That's a good thing (what I was trying to imply). Makes me want to try this game. Also it looks like I can see some fingers holding a gun on the box art. Maybe? That also might be my imagination

I'm always really happy that I managed to snag this one at a good price a few years ago. It's got so much style, pinache and charm it feels like something that would be based on an 80s manga or Saturday morning cartoon!

I gotta say it looks like there is a hand holding the blaster on the cover. And no reference to Clue with a character named Professor Plum? LOL, I was expecting a screen shot of Christopher Lloyd as Prof Plum when you said the name. I've had this game for a few years but never really dove into it too much. I think that the thing with the shop might be the 'force' thing in the status screen when you pause..... Apparently, there's a thing where the food that you eat in the game goes into some kind of a stat number, and they tie that to the shop to further gate progression a little I think? Also effects how reliably you can count on being able to start certain boss encounters? I just remember there being something obtuse and unwritten about progression in the game and I think maybe the weird obliqueness of the shop could be tied to that.

I'm not sure who currently owns the IP for this one, but I always thought it'd be really cool if it got a modern remake from the same team that actually did the Scott Pilgrim game. Give it that art style and soundtrack team and I think that'd be pretty rad.

Disclaimer: I translate by my own hand the following information from the Japanese Wikipedia entry for this game.
While I am an advanced student of the language, I am by no means a professional translator.
This game is known in Japan as『電撃ビッグバン!』(でんげきビッグバン) [Dengeki Big Bang!],
or roughly translated as "Electric Shock/Blitz Attack Big Bang!"
I guess that explains the main character's name, though a number of other names were changed!
According to Wikipedia, the Doomsday bomb was originally called the「デッドエンド」 "Dead End" bomb
(Fun fact: in the Famicom game manual I found it was misspelled as「デットエンド」"Debt end" bomb?)
Dr. Plum was kidnapped by the evil organization「ローブレイカー」 (Rob Raker? Low Breaker? Rob Laker? Ro Blaker? -feeling very stupid if this is a reference I am botching up -Oh, it's probably "Law Breaker"!)
Commander Winestuff was originally known as 「ハッスルワイン」(Hassel Wine? Hustle Wine?)
    MINOR SPOILERS
The adventurer's name is「ぴーたん」([Piitan], named after a Chinese delicacy also called "century egg" or "millenium egg")
The fairy's name is 「フェイシァ」 ([Feisha], though I guess the English manual Romanizes this as "Faysha")
The hermit is known as 「仙人」(せんにん [Senin], which translates to "mountain man" or possibly "immortal mountain wizard")
And the evil organization「ローブレイカー」is headed by none other than the nefarious mastermind,「ジーザス」 (Jesus)

    • @NESFriend

Ah yes, I remember when the Razor Tigers did all that stuff in 1997. Right after the macarena hit. Crazy times.
How do you not spend more time covering box arts, lol? Man, there is a whole cottage industry we're missing out on where MODERN DEVS make the games those cover arts depict that had NOTHING TO DO with what they were actually selling. I mean, that is amazing. I want to play, uh, "future ninja skeleton-shooting Chrome Rambo with cute girlfriend in a short skirt: The Adventure!" 😄

I appreciated your tone of voice with "'Metroidvania'...if you prefer" because no, I don't, and do not ever, prefer that term. I don't even understand it. Metroid does something. Why does Castlevania get a nod for all time for doing something similar (but much worse) a year later?

    • @darkcoeficient
      @darkcoeficient 3 місяці тому +2

It really is Symphony of the Night onwards that followed that formula. Castlevania 2 was just a one-off basically. Yeah I don't like the term either.

  • @lessthankate

I don't think anyone prefers "metroidvania". Its weird and uncomfortable when people act like Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night are the wellspring from which all exploration based games sprung and that every title with similar elements must be cribbing. Even more so when they do it just so they can play up how highly they regard the above two games.
