- This is my full review and setup guide for the GoPro Hero 8 Media Mod. There's a lot of mixed emotions and opinions on this mod online. I am going to explain why I really like it for what I need it for and who might want to avoid it. In this video, I will test the GoPro Hero 8 Media Mod out with a Vlogging microphone and the Rodelink Wireless kit. I will also compare the shotgun microphones to the onboard GoPro Hero 8 microphone.

Besides how well and informative your review is... the breaking down of each sections in the time bar is also super helpful for rewatching sections. Really appreciate that~!
One of the reasons GoPro made the Hero 8 was for vloggers. It's the reason they created the Media Mod. An external display can be connected to the Media Mod so you can see your frame during filming. In addition to an external front facing display, you can add an external microphone to increase the quality of the audio. I do not understand how you could have completely glossed over this feature, especially since you are obviously a vlogger.
One note: When I tested the audio using the media mod, I found that setting the mic to stereo produced the best quality. I was actually surprised that it sounded good. I stumbled onto this discovery while testing the GoPro on selfie stick vs a Crane M2 gimbal to compare stability (M2 provided horizon leveling). For a couple tests I had the mics on front and then for two other tests the audio had somehow switched to stereo. When I played back the footage, that is when I discovered that stereo sounded much better than front.

Great video, I did buy the media mod and in the US I thought it was pricey myself. 79.99 USD. However I use it it all kinds of situations and I like it a lot, once again great video!

Thanks for the video... I came to see what the rear mic sounded like but watched the whole thing. I liked the built in compared to the mod’s front one but hoping the mic being on top will pick up less road buzz from the bike than the built in one 👍👍
Awesome review , willl be picking one up soon, the mic on the oem sucks I think. So just like you used it for a shotgun mic is the way to go. Just curious I wonder if you can charge it while using it. Say for example if I use a portable charger while it’s recording and hook it up?
Audio quality upgraded yup - but I’d say a GoPro up in your face is unflattering to say the least. Nice review as always, Shane.
Indoors or under poor lighting the GoPro's aren't great. They also are far inferior to my main cameras too haha. :) I did this just for Audio test purposes.
Does the hero 8 media mod offer power pass through without a battery? I’m looking to power it with an external battery.
Interesting results. So not much improvement in audio quality indoors vs internal. If you were outdoors and were running or on a bicycle or motorcycle and dealing with wind hitting you front on, wouldn't the back facing mic be a huge advantage over the internal setup??
I want to hear the audio though a headset. Bluetooth or Wire? is it possible. I've tried and tried and searched the web buy can't figure it. Other wise I love my media mod. It's so worth it.
I would prefer the media mod as its the complete package and also I can vlog without any issues as the front and back mics work.
I am noticing mine eats the gopro battery with WiFi on also. normal?

Hey Shane, have you tried those DJI Osmo Action cam's. Seems like a pretty good deal for $300.
They look really cool. I wanted to buy one initially, but the video lag and fogging put me off. I know the front-facing camera lag is much better now so I will have to give it a shot at some point :).

The GoPro Media Mod is like the Spark Amp. No one in real life has ever seen one.
haha. Yeah, these are hard to find which is one of the reasons I snapped it up! I was shocked to see it in a store.
