Super clever invisible zip trick

- This week I'm sharing a super clever invisible zip trick that might just blow your mind! It will really take your invisible zip game to the next level and is a lesser known sewing trick you may well never have been aware of. My mother in law taught me after seeing it in one of her favourite sewing magazines and I've used it ever since. I use a handy tool called a hemostat, which is also super useful for turning corners and other sewing tasks even though it is actually a surgical tool. They are very cheap to buy and you can find them on the Internet. This technique makes it easier to sew right to the end of the tapes and avoid any annoying bubbles at the end of your zip. You will require a zip a good few inches longer than required by your sewing pattern for this technique. I hope you love this clever trick as much as I do!

This is hands down the best invisible zipper tutorial I’ve ever seen. I have it book marked and come back to watch it anytime I’m putting in an invisible zip. I also have anyone I’m teaching to do an invisible zip watch it as well. What a fantastic resource. Thank you, Lucy!!
This tutorial is BRILLIANT!!! I’ve just (re)started sewing as a returning novice and have just successfully sewn an invisible zip onto my skirt with no tears - this takes all the anxiety out of it and I can actually say I had fun doing this. Many, many thanks! Definitely THE go-to reference video for future zip projects!
Just tried your method for my first ever invisible zip and it turned out perfectly. Thanks
Oh my goodness! This is amazing! I've just made a practice zip before I sew the actual concealed zip on my daughter's wedding dress! I was really concerned about sewing one in her skirt but no more! Thank you so much! 12/10. Such lovely clear instructions and easy to follow.
Lucy I have been watching you for awhile and always find your tutorials most helpful. But this one just beats them only. I just put in an invisible zipper the way you show using the hemostat and OMG is turned out beautifully. Thank you, thank you for this bit of information.
Thank you soooooo much! I was dreading having to attempt an invisible zip for the first time. Now I've got my head round it and it seems much less daunting - I've got this!
This is Kenneth D. King's technique. The unaddressed part for me is where to place top of zipper tape, inside the seam allowance or at the seam allowance? Would love to see the next steps of adding a facing and finishing the neckline!
I guess you’d place the zipper tape so that the end of the zip sits where it would on the finished garment. The zipper tape itself could go beyond the seam allowance a bit, I suppose, as long as the zipper teeth themselves end somewhere just inside the seam allowance. You’d want the zip to be able to go as high as possible, but end just before the seam allowance. Apologies if I’m totally misunderstanding what you’re getting at here!

I "sew" love your tutorials Lucy. I've kept this one to come back to time and time again.. You always make me smile with those scissors! ✂️😁
As usual - great tutorial! Uncomplicated & easy to follow. Thanks for sharing. 😊
I saw this in Threads mag and on their you tube channel and YES YES YES it’s changed the frustration of putting in theses zips. Thanks so much for putting this up 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Excellent tip, thank you. I’ve usually steered clear of invisible zips, but I feel more confident to give it a go now.
Love this video because this is pretty much how I learned to do invisible zippers in 7th grade home ec almost 50 years ago, when invisible zippers were still quite new. We didn't use tape, though, just pins and the basting. And I know we didn't use hemostats to pull the slider down. I don't remember what we did use, but nowadays I use hemostats. They come in handy for so many things! I don't know why more people don't use this method for invisible zippers--to me it's by far the nicest and easiest method.
I can remember sewing them at school too but never quite managed them. Now I have no fear!
This is the method I've been using since seeing Kenneth King demonstrate it from Threads! Love this method! Thank you, Lucy for another perfect video! 😊❤👍
Yes, totally agree, and let's not forget ( he didn't!) L. Maynard who showed him! I like his zipper foot choice as well.
This is soo cool! I will definitely use this method for invisible zippers. Thanks Lucy and mom!!
Loved this tip - will be using it tomorrow when I put in a zipper for the first time in years. Feel confident now Lucy. Thanks!
Thank you for this tutorial it was so clear and I have so much more confidence going into the task. Initially I was on the hunt to see if it might be a good idea to add some lightweight interfacing to the seam allowance when inserting a zip into fine fabric. I see that you did that in your tutorial so that’s great. I’ll try the sticky tape trick too, I would never have thought of doing that. 🙏
Hi Lucy, I'm an absolute beginner to sewing and simply loving the world of creativity using fabric. I have subscribed and am watching your videos, but more than this, am learning an incredible amount from someone who is very good at teaching their profession! This is a special gift, so THANK YOU. I had to laugh when watching this video, as (being an animal biologist with a link to veterinary medicine) I happen to already have a couple of haemostats in my sewing table, as they are so useful for many tasks (eg. pulling through that last bit of elastic! etc). Keep up the inspiring tutorials. Phil
Love learning new things, this was a very excellent demonstration. I've been sewing for 59 years actually. I like the iron on interfacing and the sticky tape ideas. Thank you so much!
Lucy that was the greatest tip I've seen in a long long time. Thank you so much I'll use it the next time I have to sew in a zipper. Take care now and happy sewing.
This is so cool! I've installed enough invisible zippers that I've become pretty good. I also use the tape, it helps keep the two sides even. But I can't wait to try this! Brilliant!
Brilliant! Thank you for such concise directions!
Thanks Lucy. Glad to have watched this again as I brave adding my first invisible zip, Susan.
Yours is THE BEST video for the invis zip. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome trick. Here I go with my own!!!
I just tried this out with a skirt I'm making, and it worked perfectly! This is definitely going to be my go-to method from now on. Thank you for sharing!
I really appreciate your showing us step - by - step how to do an invisible zipper. I'm so glad I found your channel. TYSM !!!!
Using the tape to secure the zip is fantastic. I've been using the "snap" to take the zip through the bottom for awhile now. Such a helpful tutorial.
Best ever video for invisible zip insertion. Thanks so much!
I love your tutorial. This will be my go to method from now on! Thank you!
Thank You! Thank! You Thank You! the best invisible zipper tutorial. I've seen many. I said there's got to be a simple way and Wha La! Instead of trying to figure if you've got the right or left side of the zipper when you have to flip it over was mind blogging. I just finish it your way and I tell you I'm sooooo happy and relieved.
Thank you! I’ve not been brave enough to try sewing any type of zip ad yet but will definitely refer to this video when I’m ready to give it a go! 😆
This is a fantastic tutorial. Thank you so much for posting it. I used this method to insert an invisible zipper in a toile of a wedding dress I'm making for my future daughter-in-law. The best tutorial online. Take care.
I've been sewing for over 50 years...I learned something new today. Thank you!!🥰
I must so agree with all the other comments, this tip is incredible. I hate zips, always mess them up, but this will definitely make so much difference. Thank you for a really clear instructional video even I can understand.
That is a great tip and I have to try it when sewing zippers into clothing as there will be times when I want the zipper to be hidden. I am new to sewing and learning so much as I go and also learning about my machines. Thanks for sharing this information with us all and showing us just how easy it is to sew in the hidden zipper.
I've just done my first concealed zip and what a struggle.. then I found this!! So useful :)
This method makes the most sense to me. Thank you for the tutorial!
Just the tutorial i was looking for! Thank you!
Every time I sew a zip I come back here first. Don’t know if I’ll ever be a confident zip sewer 🤷♀️but this mini tutorial takes the sting out 🥰 Thank you 👏👏
What a wonderful demo so clear thank you so much 😊
Thank you very much, absolutely phantastic. Unfortunately it comes 1 day too late 😀 I was struggling with sewing in an invisible zip yesterday. But it'll be very helpful for future projects. Great snd clear 👌instructions 👍👍
I too have used Kenneth King’s method for about two years, but I do like the idea of the sticky tape, and your surgical doo Das (sic) look good!
Thanks Lucy.
Great video. I've never actually put in an invisible zip so I'll do it right the first time now. Thanks so much.
Brilliant! I love your videos. Thank you for sharing! 💜💜💜
Ah thank you so much! Solved my biggest headache in sewing!
Thank you so much for this, definitely the best technique I’ve seen!
Thank you so very much Lucy. What a fantastic tutorial.
Wow as you say this is a game changer for me !! Thank you for the tutorial
Wow love this, most of my invisible zips have been *mostly* invisible, this makes me optimistic that I can achieve a much nicer finish.
An excellent tutorial!! Thank you! I'm going to try this method on my frugal frock this month!
You are brilliant. Thankyou for all your tips and tutorials. 🙂
This is amazing - I used my regular zipper foot and tweezers (as that’s all I had), and was surprised it worked for me! Thanks so much!
Great trick, thank you!
This is such a good idea, I have save this and next time I sew an invisible zipper I am going to use this method, thanks so much and thanks to your mother in law:)
I’ve saved this video as I’ll know I’ll definitely be referring to it in the future ✂️ 🧵 x
I'm going to save this as well!
Thank you so much for this video! I tried this method with my sewing student today and it worked like a charm! She didn't have an invisible zipper foot, but we were able to make the regular zipper foot work. 🙂
I get my invisibles invisible but will try this method now. Very neat and methodical explanation Lucy. Thank you. 🌼
This is my fave method for sewing invisible zips. I think your video explains it even more clearly than the Kenneth King one.
Fantastic tip, love it
Brilliant, thank you for this video.
Love this! Thank you!!
Thank you soooo much! It turned out lovely on you 🌼
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm getting ready to sew an invisible zipper for the first time in the Winslow Culottes by Helen's Closet and I wanted to be sure to get it right and smooth so this has been very helpful!
Wow, great tip. I’ll definitely be using this in the future. Thanks fir sharing😻
I’ve used this method as well. It makes a beautiful zipper installation.
I must tell you, I spent the past few days trying to find an invisible zipper video. I came across many many people who used the same technique as you, but their explanation was confusing. I even saw the technique from the person where your mother-in-law got it from and I was still confused. Thank you so very much. I look forward to practicing on my scrap fabric first, as if it was the real thing, before I do the real thing 😊....thank you again so much!
Fantastic tutorial. Thanks so much.
Thanks for the tutorial! Very well explained!
brilliant Lucy! thank you
I’ve used a similar method from you tube great tutorial you can never stop learning x
Wow! Worked perfectly. Couldn’t understand my sewing pattern, but this video was so easy to follow. Thank you. You saved my dress from the bin!
Excellent video!. Thank you.
Very helpful, thank you. 💕
Wow Lucy, thanks for another great tutorial 💗
Impressive. Many thanks! 😺
Thank you so much.
I Will definitely be trying this. You do great tutorials. Thank You
I'm about to make a dress with an invisible zipper, and have had to search the house to find my old nursing forceps (as we call them in the UK). They were actually in the shed in hubby's tool box but they are now in my sewing box. Never thought I'd need them again in my lifetime!
This is brilliant.....thank you for sharing
Brilliant. Thank you!
Brilliant!!
Thank you for the video, really useful. I’ll be using the tweezers from now on!
Thank you for sharing this.
Brilliant!!! Amazing. I will use tweezers for now. Thanks so much.
This is a great tutorial. Thank you for sharing!
Excellent demo. Thank you. ❤️🥰🇦🇺
This was sooooooo helpful.
Perfect application……..now all I need is for mine to look as neat as this………it will I’m sure!
🤗🤗🤗
Oh wow, that's pure genius, thank you for sharing ♥
Very clear. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I need to sew an invisible zipper for my skirt and I was so worried it would be terrible, I was willing to pay someone to do it for me but this video made me able to do it! I've only done it on scraps of my wool fabric so hopefully it turns out well!!
This is the best method ever. So much faster than the traditional way, and much more accurate.
Great tutorial, thanks 🙏
Thank you 🎉
Brilliant tip! 💕
Great tutorial! Well done 🥰
I keep this vid on the YT equivalent of ‘speed dial’. Thank you. Very clear and it works.
Thank you for showing this method to us so clearly. The regular way of doing it is a mind bending game of complete confusion. Which is OK if you do it a lot and get used to it but not if you keep having to figure it out every time.
Thank you so much, so easy to follow 👍👍👍😊
Wow! Thanks for the great tip!
Great method and tips, wish you had shown how you sew across the base of the zip last! My Mum taught me to always baste in these zips but never used tape or stabiliser, so thank you for that.
OMG - Just tried ths techniaue and it worked like a charm!! Thanks so much for this tutorial. I always been scared of invisible zips! No more (I hope) LOL thanks!!!
