This was the most beautiful production of "Dido and Aeneas" that I have ever seen. All the leads sang exquisitely and artistically, and the Baroque dances and stylized gestures made it so authentic. I find myself wondering if any of the gifted young singers and dancers went on to have successful careers. One last comment: the Sorceress's menagerie of followers were incredibly funny, adding a comic relief to the romance and tragedy.
No matter how u cover it up Purcell speaks to people today, to our sense of ravishing harmony and melody to our sense of ridiculousness and humor even. I wouldn't know of course, having only read one book about him and really digging that Tony Palmer movie, but in the MUSIC you can hear NOW!
If Dido knocked off the vibrato and paid more attention to intonation she'd be lovely. Indeed they could all knock off the vibrato. Instrumentalists are often encouraged to listen to singers. I think the opposite is the case.
I saw a Barcelona production of 'Dido and Aeneas' last night on UA-cam which I praised, but with unspoken reservations. This University of Oklahoma production, however, exceeds anything I have ever seen in my life. If there is one adjective to describe this production it is "graceful". Beautifully staged, danced, and sung, as well as acted - and also true to the opera - with the pantomime of Diana and Actaeon fitting the sylvan scene like a glove. There were some comic moments, the witch and her bestial minions, with their ingenious costumes and make-up, and the Mercury on strings that funnily reminded me of JIm Carrey! Everything in the opera, from the tragic to the comic, was just the ideal temperature and the right blend, and none of it detracted from the integrity of the story. The staging of Dido's death was pure perfection and moving. Thank you for giving me such profound delight this evening,
what a lovely production full of wonderful characters and performances! I was thoroughly entertained, and of course, Purcell is unrivaled so the music matched the visuals perfectly!
What a great performance, with great sound - the music and singers are right at your ears (with headphones on). Amazing costumes & headpieces too. Thank you.
Какое удивительное доверчиво - хрустальное, бережное и деликатное звучание голоса у главной героини! Слушаю и слушаю и не могу наслушаться. Нет никакой театральности. Все так искренне. Спасибо жа такой подарок.
This is amazing. I did a production of this opera this past summer and this was The Video that I practiced with every day. It ended up pretty good but nothing can top this
Brilliant in every aspect - all are to be congratulated - and the producers have a true sense of history and didn't bring out beach towels and deck chairs - again hearty congratulations.
Exquisite! Bravissimo to all involved. Every aspect of the Baroque fascinates. I am a pianist and harpsichordist who rarely plays other than Baroque music, and that would be Mozart.
It's fascinating I noticed that the headdresses of Dido and her maids, and indeed their dresses are absolutely identical to Russian folk costumes...... you can google Kichka, Kokoshnik and other traditional women's Russian folk headdresses
Merveilleux baroque. La voix de Didon est fabuleuse: quel chant du cygne! Tout ça en même pas 1 H00 avec une chorégraphie et des costumes superbes. Alors, un chef d'oeuvre, je dirais presqu'un tube!
A very funny opera despite the tragic end for Dido, with witches planning to undo the lives of men, a great libretto as well as score. I found it was useful to look up the references to Greek Mythology, Aeneas being the product of a union between Aphrodite, goddess of love, and a mortal Anchises.
The rest of the comments: "what Excelent production and work was put into this masterpice. This piece fills me with joy and peace whenever i hear it..." You: *FUCK YEAHH!!*
A fantastic production, I hope it was a masters programme, a bit of a shame about Aeneas being a rather old rough, whom a young queen is unlikely to fall in love with nor indeed be advised to.
A reasonable student production of an early baroque opera (1689 probable 1st performance) most of the voices were OK but not baroque specialist voices which causes problems with some of the content. Not an easy opera to perform well as much of it is just recacetive style rather than actual arias and therefore quite tedious to most audiences. A good attempt at an original style staging. In my opinion it needed more 'over the top' effects which would have added the wonder that baroque audiences loved.

Yes. A startlingly good performance. Congratulations to all in the production.

Finally, a production that stays true to Baroque costumes and dance
I love how Dido's friends are like ''girl get you that sweet Trojan ass!'' like it's not gonna end at all.
Lol
What a brilliant interpretion of my all time favourit baroque opera of all time!
This is the best Dido and Aeneas I have ever seen.
The staging and machinery as well as singing and acting seem to be authentic and impressing. I like this style of baroque musical theatre so much
Wow, a classical piece that begins like the musicians are not in a rush to get it over with. I am happy.

Siempre vuelvo a mirar esta representación de Dido y Aeneas porque me encanta mucho. Personaje favorito? Las brujas, una genias
I have heard the opera several times, but this is the first time I see it. Great performance, and thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much for this magnificent and very alluring rendition of Purcell's masterwork ! Absolutely the best I have already seen and heard.
An excellent performance - Authentic & emotional. Really enjoyable, thank you.
Truly gorgeous production. Very talented singers, designers, and dancers. Well done, all, from a viewer in 2022! Very inspiring artistic adventure.

"Wow" doesn't even begin to cover it. This is a production at the highest professional level.
It's fascinating

Sadly enormously talented Master Purcell did die too early, sparing the world of music so many joys. So sad. Thank you Sir, whatever you are.

Je suis d'accord pour le tube. La voix de Dido est si juste. D'une vitesse parfaitement adaptée à la pièce .

Costumi meravigliosi !!
I literally love this
❤🎉❤🎉❤
Superbly done in every facet.
This was on the radio recently and the audience suddenly applauded at the 37:05 mark, when they don’t here.
Best version on You Tube by a long shot. Why would any production leave out the ballet? Its not the same experience.
Amazing!
My name is Aeneas lol
Thank you for that information, Mr Killerdude.
Do you work like a Trojan? Sitting around for 10 years doing nothing then taking all the credit for someone else's idea and work?
first English Opera? Je ne think so pas. Siege of Rhodes? Venus and Adonis?
The greatest question in this production is why the handmaid in gold not singing Dido? She has the vocal chops.
Vocal chops means? (sorry for my poor vocab)
@@tiehanpan251 Means she can do the Dido role
Well, i find her vibrato too strong and strident at higher notes. But that is just my taste i assume. Great voice nevertheless.
@@Klonering If your vibrato is too weak, you are not singing properly.
@@therealmerryjestnot in the baroque style.

Magnífica e histórica representación. Muy bonita.

wow! A King Charles II fest. I wonder if the current King Charles loves this too. Sure hope so.
the tenor section leaves a lot to be desired...
A great pity that the excellent chorus are always unseen - they're just as much of the production as the soloists and the dancers.
Guy: Dido and Aenas. (daydo and aneeas)
Me thinkin it was pronounced (diddoh and anus)...
Die - do, not day - do.

Forget it, Jake. It's Oklahoma.
Good voices, bad acting.
