- Now here is something completely different and as far removed from our Christmas uploads as its possible to get - don't ever say this page is boring! A performance of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas performed and sung by the Tolzer Knabenchor directed by G Schmidt-Garden.
Broadcast on German TV on 12 August 1980 from Montepulciano, Tuscany in the town's theatre during Hans Werner Henzes Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte.
The soloists are Gregor Lutje as Dido, Christian Schulz as Aeneas and Thomas Berthold as Belinda and following the opera production all the Tolzer boys spent two days holiday in a luxury hotel on the island of Ischia.

I showed a part of this recording to a group of people with good knowledge of classic musiic. They saw that no performers were men and took it for a female choir acting. - Which famous female choir? And from where in the world? were the questions. - Then they couldn´t believe me, when I told that allo performers were 12-14 year old BOYS. - Impossible that there could be a boy choir with so female-star voices and worthy action moves?! - Well, but yes! For Tölzer Knabenchor nothing has been impossible for tens of years... So many, so wonderful both singers and like scene action professionals at the same time!
As well as the secure singing, with fine production values including sensible direction, appropriate design and costumes etc., this performance gives more sense to this opera which is often difficult to get 'right' than most others I've ever seen.
Well it's certainly different! Can't see how this could be Uploaded nowadays what with our current Safeguarding regulations.

Holy Toledo! I untied the bow, but held off after the first few bars & decided to treat this as a Christmas present! I have now made arrangements to unwrap it on the 27th, inviting over a neighbor who's a huge Baroque opera fan (she's also a violist in our city's orchestra), a German friend in town for the holidays who was actually with the Toelzer in the early 1990's, and another acquaintance who's an early music afficionado who bizarrely eschews boys' voices and needs some educatin'. It'll be a surprise for all three of them. What a treat! The ARCM is the year's winning Secret Santa, by leaps and bounds.
