Wow, a classical piece that begins like the musicians are not in a rush to get it over with. I am happy.

The staging and machinery as well as singing and acting seem to be authentic and impressing. I like this style of baroque musical theatre so much

A great pity that the excellent chorus are always unseen - they're just as much of the production as the soloists and the dancers.

A very funny opera despite the tragic end for Dido, with witches planning to undo the lives of men, a great libretto as well as score. I found it was useful to look up the references to Greek Mythology, Aeneas being the product of a union between Aphrodite, goddess of love, and a mortal Anchises.

A fantastic production, I hope it was a masters programme, a bit of a shame about Aeneas being a rather old rough, whom a young queen is unlikely to fall in love with nor indeed be advised to.

It's fascinating I noticed that the headdresses of Dido and her maids, and indeed their dresses are absolutely identical to Russian folk costumes...... you can google Kichka, Kokoshnik and other traditional women's Russian folk headdresses

I saw a Barcelona production of 'Dido and Aeneas' last night on UA-cam which I praised, but with unspoken reservations. This University of Oklahoma production, however, exceeds anything I have ever seen in my life. If there is one adjective to describe this production it is "graceful". Beautifully staged, danced, and sung, as well as acted - and also true to the opera - with the pantomime of Diana and Actaeon fitting the sylvan scene like a glove. There were some comic moments, the witch and her bestial minions, with their ingenious costumes and make-up, and the Mercury on strings that funnily reminded me of JIm Carrey! Everything in the opera, from the tragic to the comic, was just the ideal temperature and the right blend, and none of it detracted from the integrity of the story. The staging of Dido's death was pure perfection and moving. Thank you for giving me such profound delight this evening,

    • @olavtryggvason1194

Probably not. Bach looked down on the new musical developments after 1740 as kind of decay of the old style, which he was mastering as nobody else, not even Händel.

A reasonable student production of an early baroque opera (1689 probable 1st performance) most of the voices were OK but not baroque specialist voices which causes problems with some of the content. Not an easy opera to perform well as much of it is just recacetive style rather than actual arias and therefore quite tedious to most audiences. A good attempt at an original style staging. In my opinion it needed more 'over the top' effects which would have added the wonder that baroque audiences loved.
