    I live in the very region where the Reticulated variety was introduced in Honolulu, Hawaii. I see and hear the frogs, their tadpoles almost daily. They are a source of joy to me as they are one of the few species of creatures still here over the years. I will share your informative video with friends and neighbors. Mahalo!

    • @HighlanderNorth1
      @HighlanderNorth1 6 місяців тому

      👍 Mahalo is a great, traditional native Hawaiian term for conveying gratitude or esteem. As in Polynesia, we native Delawareans have our own highly unique language. For instance, a traditional Wilmington native sees a fellow passerby, and asks, "hey playa, can I get one of them Newps"? The respondent may answer with, "nahh man, this ain't no Newp. I don't smoke dem menthols! All I gots are Marlboro reds".
      But a nearby pedestrian may have heard this conversation, and he could say, "yo pimp, I got that Newp for you". Having received his cigarette, he would likely answer with, "my man, mahalo to you". 😉

    I'm currently raising up some auratus tadpoles that I traded for 2 tarantula spiderlings (T. rasti). The first tadpole's second front leg just popped. I'm so excited to see them come out of the water as froglets. This is my first-time raising tadpoles and it's been an extremely interesting and rewarding experience.

    FINALLY! I’ve been looking for a care guide for this species because I’m about to get my first ever poison dart frogs and I thought these were some of the more “beginner friendly”…I’ve spent WEEKS trying to find a dedicated guide to these guys but I’ve only found guides for other frogs like Tinctorius or Leucemeles (sorry if they’re not spelled right), thank you so much!

      Tincs and leucs are also beginner friendly. My first dart frogs were D. azureus (blue poison dart frog) and they have been a pleasure to keep and learn with. They are so beautiful and bold. They aren't bothered by me watching them feed at all, they will come right to the front of the vivarium and feed. The varying shades of blues with black spots and splotches on them is sooooo pretty too. They almost don't look real lol!

      @NorthernFrogger  3 роки тому

      Yeah, I would say auratus make good beginner frogs, especially if you go for one of the bolder morphs. Some morphs like the reticulated or super blues I would consider a bit too shy to be a great beginner frog, but a bolder morph like an El Cope I would definitely recommend for beginners.

    Hi all your frogs and enclosures are amazing Do you think I can keep some dart frogs with my fire salamanders? I have 3 salamanders and they are in big enclosure

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  4 роки тому

      Thanks! I wouldn't recommend mixing them. Fire salamanders have toxins which could potentially be harmful to the frogs. Salamanders also tend to be pretty aggressive eaters, with eyes sometimes bigger than their stomachs, and I wouldn't trust them not to try to eat any but the largest dart frogs. Many of the larger feeders you might give to the salamanders like crickets or mealworms, could also potentially do damage the dart frogs.

    Can you elaborate a bit on the Semi-arboreal thing? I built a vertical vivarium out of a converted 29 gallon aquarium. I'm worried they won't climb it.

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  2 роки тому

      They will climb quite a bit if given the chance, but they spend less time in the upper parts than something like a tree frog would.

  • @pixel3610
    @pixel3610 3 роки тому

    what can i house them with. small tree frogs and mourning geckos?

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  3 роки тому +1

      As a general rule, I'm not a huge fan of cohabitation of different species in captivity, as it seems to often result in a compromise of the care of one or both species. That being said, I do currently house a pair of mourning geckos with a pair of Azureus, and it seems to be going well, but I'm actually still planning to separate them and build a mourning gecko specific vivarium in the future.
      I don't have any experience keeping any tree frogs with dart frogs, but I suppose it could work. As long as they share the same humidity and temperature needs, they are small enough to not try to eat the dart frogs, and the tank is big enough that each species has enough space that they will not be stressed out by the other.

    Actually have a real question. I revived baby BLUE AND BLACK AURATUS DART FROGS. As a gift from underground reptiles. I had no idea I was getting them. I did However wish to get some in the future so did have an enclosure set up luckily. A question about food. I put a few pinhead crickets in. But they may be too big. I need to order flightless fruit flies. But they won’t be in until next week. How long can they go without eating. As my local stores are all out of the feeders fruit flies cultures. Thanks

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  2 роки тому +1

      It's a bit on the small side, but you could keep a pair of Ranitomeya in there. I have my thumbnails mostly in that size and they've been doing fine for years. I do feel like that size is a bit smaller than ideal though, and I am looking to upgrade them all into 18" cubes minimum

  • @elizabethjacobson5444

    Is it okay to house different Dendrobates auartus morphs together? Such as a super blue and el cope, blue and black, bocas and others such. I’d like to have a few different colors in my tank, but I want to make sure they will be okay especially if they end up breeding. Would much appreciate a response, thanks Josh!

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  Рік тому

      I generally don't recommend it. I think it's possible if done right, but there is the risk of hybridization so to be responsible about it you'll have to take steps to make sure the eggs/tadpoles don't survive. I would also have concerns about territorial aggression leading leading to undue stress to the frogs.

  • @williamjoseph3973

    Can I house an El cope with any of the other 3 subspecies, or should I stick to only the el cope?

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  9 місяців тому +1

      I would always recommend against mixing morphs. The El Cope are bigger and bolder than the others so there is a good chance they would bully the smaller ones.

      @NorthernFrogger that's what I figured. I just got my first dart Saturday. I admit I did very little research beforehand, but I also didn't know it was available at my local store. One more question, is it more beneficial to have multiple frogs (3 in my situation)? Or is there no difference?
