The only way to know where the limits are is to push them. I'm afraid this building is going to teach some very hard lessons. Lessons common sense should have taught its designers already. It is at least 30% too tall for its footprint. It will not handle a hurricane as well as other structures.

I know I'm just stating the obvious here, but low wage essential jobs tend to be a lot tougher than any CEO position. Also, sharing equally doesn't have to mean people owe you anything. You can just share for the sake of sharing.

I don't think these people leave in the morning. It's not like they're going to work.
In fact, a large part of the building is probably empty most of the time. These are trophy apartments. You buy them for prestige and long term profit.

WeatherManToBe Nobody really actually lives in these apartments. They’re bought for profit and, like the other guy said, prestige and reputation value.
If it's only 1 unit per floor, it's probably not as bad as it sounds.
These apartments are more "free stuff" aka vantity holdings. They will sit at anywhere from 3-5% capacity at any given day.
One thing left out that's amazing is they couldn't dig as deep as they wanted, so they basically screwed the building into the bedrock so it wouldn't topple over.

The areas of the city with close to the surface bedrock are usually the areas with the tallest buildings. Anchoring to bedrock is preferred when possible. In Chicago they have to build raft like structure as the foundation since they built that city on a swamp, and the bed rock is deep. Some of the early buildings had to have their basements rebuilt as the walls are sinking, but the floors didn't

As cool as it looks, I would be afraid to step a foot in it. It feels like Indiana Jones having to step on an invisible bridge by using faith to reach the grail.

I went to NYC in 2018 and got off the bus just south of Central Park. I remember staring at this massively tall and slender building that disappeared into the clouds and to this day had no idea what that building was. You could easily see it from Central Park as well. Thanks for sharing this video with us because this has to be the building I was so in awe of!

Me too. I have a bad feeling that they're cutting corners on safety to get those extreme dimensions. It could end up like Sydney Opal Tower from Australia where the residents get evacuated and lose confidence in safety of the building.
I was just there a few days ago. It's so tall and thin, jud looking at it from the bottom looks like someone just stuck a glass toothpick into the ground when you look at it all the way up. It's actually incredible how they did it
Acrophobia alert ! Yes, I once visited the Scotia Plaza in Toronto, Canada which is a narrow building, although not this narrow, and all I could think about was what if it toppled over from the wind.
When you consider money, over safety.
Yet to mention, is it safe due wind can blow thin buildings away.
One of my favorite buildings on the skyline, as it incorperates the newer technology today, but also making it look like an older building with the terracotta facade!

My husband worked on 432 park ave. He took some pretty amazing pictures the years he was there, almost lost a finger and was there until they topped off. I look at that building a little differently... We used to call it the "middle finger of Manhattan" lol

BRENDAN well they have put in things to stop it fron swaying. It seems like an impossible task though. When we had a typhoon in HK a couple of years ago, you could see a bunch of towers swaying. It was uneasy to watch

@Mike Bailey, Hey bro. I've never been to Las Cruces as I live in the NW part or the state and only make it as far as Albuquerque. But I can tell ya what I feel about New Mexico.
I'm Native American (Navajo) and lived in AZ/NM most of my life. My perception of the state is very positive. It is called "The Land of Enchantment" because of the gorgeous scenery/wilderness. It is very open and can be sparsely populated. But head to ABQ and you'll be amongst an almost one million people metro made up of mostly hispanics, whites, and reds (me ayyyyyy lol). Many transplants relocate to ABQ as it's the largest city in the state. Las Cruces would be the 2nd largest, but unfortunately I have never been there in my 35 years. From what I know it's a college town (NMSU) and seems to be ok/nice. But it can get very hot, but not like Phoenix hot. But still in the 100's hot. But back to the state as a whole, it has lovely weather. Winters are not crazy, it has a mostly pleasant arid heat, and it very dry with lots of dirt and no greenery. That is except during monsoon season when the desert comes alive! The daily downpours bring cooler temps with pleasant dew points in the 50's from end of July to early September. Of course these are the things I like about NM, but there's the bad things too like high property crime, poverty, poor education, and lack of greenery. But still, I enjoy it here. However when I was in my teens/early twenties I friggin' hated it here. NM isn't everyone's cup of tea. But I've grown to appreciate it for what it is. Best way to do that is come for a visit and meet the locals. Cheers mate.

To all the skeptics questioning this buildings structural integrity:
I just want to confirm that this building will, in fact, tip over at some point.
"Could be the last of New York's super slender skyscrapers?" I highly doubt that. I'm sure maybe people also thought that the Empire State Building would be the last tall skyscraper built in New York when the depression hit but clearly that was not the case. Recessions come and go but new developments will continue to rise indefinitely into the future, the only question is the timeline.
Not necessarily, an increasingly large number of people hate the look of modern skyscrapers and are bored of the same old steel and glass theme everywhere. I laughed when the video said they copied the historic 1950s style, it looks like every other modern skyscraper to me. The world is starting to long for creative inspiring historic-style architecture and they want their cities to be beautiful again. This might force city planners to rethink the entire concept of tower style housing and stacking millions of people on top of each other in a small area.
@@maxsteel4950 It's not about aesthetics, space in Manhattan is as such a premium, there is no other choice but to build not only up.
but now doing it with a very small footprint---hence these ultra thin towers.

@@LittleMissSmallPaw Those are two different things. Air rights are bought and sold on the free market, allowing those who value it most to buy it at the highest price. "Strict urban planning" is usually top-down, rule-by-fiat approach that imposes zoning restrictions on private landowners, regardless of what the market conditions dictate. The first is good, the second is not.
New York and Hong Kong (and increasingly Dubai) already look alike. Not sure what point you are trying to make there.
As an aspiring architect, I'm envious of the work the developers have put into creating such a masterpiece. I love the tower's profile, sleek yet classic in the choice of bronze and terracotta. I couldn't have thought up of a better design for the world's thinnest skyscraper.

BrenButler I think “it’s not that hard” is the absolute maximum amount of extraneous effort the super rich would ever put into something they don’t really wanna do. And that’s on a good day. So yeah, tossing a few measly bucks at a peasant to get groceries delivered instead seems far more likely to me.

I had a chance to go to NYC recently for a work thing, didn't actually go to Manhattan but got to see it from across the river. This tower was the first one i noticed. It was mind blowing to see in person, especially from a distance. Thats something videos can never do justice with.

Yea well most of these apartments are 3 thousand plus square feet with the penthouse being over 7 thousand so they are very large inside

I live all the way up in Harlem at 125th on the 4th floor, surrounded buy tall buildings and I can still see the top of this Building from my window

I'd be horrified to live up on the top levels of that building. You couldn't give it to me for free - there is absolutely no way I'd stay there. Just looking out of the window would be a ball rush, and I'd probably lay down and crawl away from the window, LOL. You know that place is swaying on a windy day. More power to those who love living 150+ stories above the ground. No way for me.
I admire the physical challenge of this project. The aesthetic is also interesting, what with the homage to Art Deco motifs; it gives this building a little more personality than it would otherwise have. I would have liked to hear more about the design process, things like what one of the other commenters mentioned about how the foundation was created and how the HVAC and so on are meant to work (probably not much different from other modern high-rises, but maybe the thinness posed special challenges).
I did Hvac/sheetmetal on a mid rise building in Virginia Beach about 15 years ago. For the most part, the units had individual systems, each had a small mechanical room located out on the balcony.
There were additional riser ducts for the hallways and elevators.
Structurally, it was concrete and rebar for all the inhabitable areas, the roof trusses were a light gauge structural system.
A lot of high rise buildings in the southeast are assembled like that for cost efficiency.
Forms and concrete, which is made at batch plants onsite, are a lot less expensive than fabricated steel that has to be shipped and then erected with big ass cranes.
Most of the structural supports for the roofs, the cupolas for the elevator and mechanical equipment, and stairs are made out of steel, installed by iron workers.

I had a nightmare once about being way up in a tall skyscraper and a huge tidal wave came rolling in almost like in slow motion... the scene switched to a bird's eye view that was somewhat above and back from the buildings in the area... that wave must have been five or six hundred feet tall, just slowly rolling in and taking all the buildings out, including mine. I woke up yelling. I fucking hate dreams like that.

New York has changed beyond recognition from the city I once knew.
While I believe the engineering is sound and the structure is more than safe, I think Fred is correct. I doubt if we'll be seeing many more of these in the future.
Not so much design and engineering limitations, but more economic and social trends will curb NYC development in the future. I think much of NYC is about to lose its luster that it's held in the past decades. The world is definitely changing!

Seems like things shift back and forth. Just the past 7 years was a mad rush for younger folks and just anyone needing a job to go denser cities.
Now that's changed, people are rushing to rural areas despite shit pay, and harder to find a job when things fall apart as they usually do in our unstable economic system.

Maybe elevator shaft has some kind of special sound reduction ? I would imagine someone thought about it when you sell apartment for at least 40 mil and more.
Have a flat in a very normal but just recently finished building. The sound isolation is incredible. Wouldn't be surprised if there is no elevator noice at all in that tower.
I feel that this development is so upscale, the lift guiderails could be magnetised so there's less rolling noise
With the amount of money spent to build this, sound wont be an issue.

The threat of earthquakes definitely makes such buildings impractical in Japan. I was in a tall building in Japan when a quake struck, felt like a ship in a hurricane. One of my new co-workers said, "Damn, that was scary." I just said, "Welcome to Japan."
“Only two elevator shafts”. Wait ten minutes for the lift, and when it comes, it’s packed and you can’t get in. Great.
Only 58 apartments in this building, probably there won't be more than 100 people in this 400m tall building on any given day

Griffindor223 regardless, elevators are fast now-a-days. I lived in a 24 floor apartment building with 170 residences for a year, and max I ever saw in our two elevators was 5 people. Never spent more than 30 seconds inside one, even with my apt on the 20th floor.

I saw this being built from the distance the other day, and i just couldn't believe how it looks, even compared to the 432 park avenue building, and i thought no building could be thinner being so tall
As someone with an Architectural background, in my opinion this is one of the nicest modern skyscrapers I have seen. It's massing and scaling is nice, especially the way it narrows at the top, as opposed to the other super thin building nearby. Also, the other super thin building nearby utilises a very simple large square window style - it's okay but just not that interesting. This however is really nice - how they've used a vertical façade and brass decoration, as an ode to New York's Art-Deco roots and it also has an air of the original world trade centre about it. I also like the way it's been built around the older building at street level. Starchitects take note.
As a retired architect (and much older now) I would not feel comfortable being anywhere higher than that which is reachable by the tallest firetruck ladder. Sorry. This is like the Icarus syndrome where man's folly tries to go as far into space as possible.

I used to work in what is now called Billionaire's Row in 2008 and I'm still surprised how much has changed. As rightfully explained in this video, 2020 will sadly bring a halt to these new types of super-slim tall buildings...

Yeah they look like toothpicks in the skyline. Not a good look at all. Certainly not worth all that money.
