I don't know if he was really talking specifically about getting great tone on cheap gear but instead just something a lot more general. He is encouraging players to really value what they have (regardless of price) and I honestly think that is far, far better than turning it into "cheap versus expensive" like so many other click-bait chasing guitar UA-camrs tend to. JHS doesn't exactly make cheap stuff and it is obvious that Josh Scott isn't exactly attached to any particular price point on some ideological level. In my opinion, that is the way to be. When you start getting too attached to the notion of only getting "cheap" or "expensive" gear, you start losing sight of the bigger picture.

People will watch a video about old-timey or alternative medicine, laugh and say to themselves "how could they be so superstitious and naive?" and then go and wax poetic about tonewood and overpriced pedals on their guitar forums.
Electrical equipment is difficult. I'm qualified to work as an electrician in my country (not by myself, you need two years work experience), and I still occasionally feel like I don't understand how electronics work.
And when especially untrained people don't understand how things work, they tend towards superstition and they seek patterns because that's how our brains work. People think they're immune to this, but none of us are completely.
The thing that's really ridiculous is what people tend towards in their superstitious thinking. You'd think people would get obsessed with pickups, amps, cab size and type, speakers, guitar electronics, EQ - but it's almost as if the less impactful something is, the more people obsess over it.

I learned a lot from this episode, and the Bad Monkey vs everything episode was educational too. The statement about having the treble and bass controls on the Tube Screamer topography vs. a single tone control allowing for more diversification clicked for me and helped me to see things a little different . I am thankful you and your team made the videos. All your videos are great. I have been very entertained by the Bad Monkey viral outbreak. It has been fun to watch.

What's absolutely wild to me, is the capricious nature of virality, like the blindfold test of the Mosky Horse (can't remember if it was gold or silver) vs the Klon basically did the same thing, with a pedal that was probably even more affordable, but never went anywhere near as viral. (although I must admit I ordered a silver horse right after the bad monkey video came out just in case it caused a revisit!)

One friend who had a lot of money and always wanted to have a tone similar to mine would buy different amps pedals processors and could never copy my tone .. 15 years ago I was really into overdrive pedals and had about 10 different ones...many of them boutique. I quickly came to the realization that there wasn't THAT much difference in all of them simply because what they do is PUSH a tube amp into overdrive. The AMP and GUITAR play a big part in the overall sound. I ended up selling a lot of my expensive boutique pedals as a result. I had a $200 Keeley modded Tube Screamer at the time and the Bad Monkey sounded the same while also having more EQ versatility because it had bass and treble...so I sold the Keeley. For what it's worth, some other overdrive pedals I like a lot that I kept after my decades long quest are: The Radial Tonebone Classic, The BadCat 2-Tone, The Snouse Bluesbreaker clone, and The Digitech Screamin' Blues. There are lots of great pedals out there for overdrive. Find one that works well with your guitar, amp and playing style and don't buy into the hype that any one pedal is "magic" None are better...if anything they might sound slightly different and/or have more tone shaping capability. BTW the overdrive you get by simply cranking your tube amp without using a pedal at all can be nice as well.

Great video Josh. When I first got into guitar I thought I had to have the latest and greatest to get the tone I was looking for. Like many people with this bug I purchased many pedals guitars amps etc. I have a main board just stacked with 16 plus pedals a wet and dry chain etc. Then I have a homemade board that has the basics, one overdrive pedal, reverb, a cheap Jimmy Nova univibe, a chorus, and a tuner. It's powered by a joyo rechargeable power supply. I get some of the cleanest best tones I've ever had off of that board, and any various selected guitar. Backing the point to your video It's how you learn to use the tools you have. If I was to give advice to anybody just starting, I would set them up with some mid-range price pedals, a really good amp, and a guitar of their choice.

There is so much cool stuff out there that people dismiss. Don't worry about having bad gear. If you like the sound and enjoy making music; that's what matters. I go out of my way to buy crappy gear because it's interesting and different. When I go to the thrift shop I always stop by the toy section to look at baby toys. Some of those make cool sounds that I can use in my music. Crappy isn't a bad thing if it's the good kind of crappy. Lately I have been playing around with a micro cassette recorder for a Lo-Fi vibe. I am getting some great results. So don't worry about what social media tell you is good. Use your ears and brain. If like it; that's what matters.

As someone who regularly uses clean solid state amps, and plays fuzz into the front of those clean solid state amps, debates like this crack me up. My tone sounds good. My wife, who just cares about whether or not it sounds cool, loves my tone. When I record my guitars sound huge.
I learned all this when I was a kid with an acoustic guitar trying to imitate The Edge and Robert Smith. I learned more about “good tone” by trying to get a single acoustic guitar to sound like an entire band that was using distortion and modulation and either multiple guitars or delays and reverbs than I ever have watching pedal videos and reading crap on guitar forums. I just learned what made music sound cool to me, and then I buy pedals because they look cool and sound like fun and I make music the same way I did back when the only music gear I had was $150 acoustic that I couldn’t even tune.
And I learned to just have fun. That was the best thing.
