My stepfather was born in 1896 in Pinebloom, Ga. He made a his cake that was out of this world delicious and he cooked it on the stove top. He used a 8" nonstick little skillet. He mixed self rising flour, milk and bacon grease together. He put 1-2 tablespoons of bacon grease in the skillet, Poured the batter in, cooked it slowly for about 20 minutes, flipped it over, cooked it another 10 minutes or so and it was delicious.!

Today I learned so much. Thank you, Tammy.
First, I’m gonna start slicing my potatoes. Those look sooo YUM. Second, I am going to think more critically about timing. This was an awesome example for breakfast prep. Everything was so fluid, focused, and efficient. 🤯 this would easily take me 1 hr and then some.
Third, I’m getting four new cooking tools:
    - A mixing fork
    - Bacon grease holder
    - Sifter
    - A fish spatula
    - Hand glove for protection during slicing
Thank you for this delightful treat! Admittedly, I’m fancy from Cali but still have sincere reverence for my family’s Southern heritage.
Have a fun vacationing in Vegas! HBD to Chris!
And LOL to your tshirt 😂

My mom and them made ours mostly with cornmeal.
Sometimes they woukd add crumbled up bacon, fried fat back, chopped up ham, hot pepper, cheese, onions or just plain..sometimes, sweet, sometimes savory..whatever we had a lot of in the fridge or pantry or seasonal garden.
      They were so darn good.🙏🏿

At Mom's (mine) we usually eat our eggs with toast. I like to dice my fried eggs really small just like my father did. I am mostly like my father. Love you guys you work great together. I made some salmon patties for the first time and it didn't taste like my auntie Dot salmon. but watching you i now know where I went wrong. I turn on the stove lol. no I added to much cornmeal and to many eggs. but it was ok for my first try. Thanks I be watch. my next step will be biscuits.

Thanks Tammy and Chris! I live in Bucks County, PA. Snow storm was not too bad, but very cold and windy. New England is getting hammered 🥺

I'm in NC and I grew up with it being called a johnny hoe cake made the same way you just did. I couldn't tell you the last time I used shortening. After my parents had health problems I had to redo a lot of home cooking recipes to make them a little healthier and have just stuck to them. I make all my biscuits and Johnny hoe cakes with just self rising flour and yogurt tastes just like a buttermilk biscuit. 🤗🌹❣️🙏
