The practice died out by WW2 for the army, whilst for the Royal Navy it continued until 1971. It’s fitting really considering it began with the navy in the 17th century and ended with the navy over three centuries later.
Interestingly the French used to issue wine if I remember correctly, whilst the Germans issued something else I think, quite possibly beer (that or Prussian militarism alone was used to see them through). Either way other nations besides Britain used to do the same thing.

Um dark humor is nt bad but light humor is also not bad. Uncle John i dont care what name you name put on youtube but have ever been in war? If so you know very well what PTS is and why in Usa war veterens dont get money enough to have a home and basic needs? i know as i lived in Usa and i always helped the homeless people or try to understand them.
Foremost i spoke to many war veterens and so look i never was in war this life but i sure know what war is in digital historical simulational games. Today in virtural reality you can live even though its not reality its just artifical reality=virtural reality never the same as actual biologica/physical reality.
Anyway war is not a joke and is the most painful expereince that human or any healrthy specie expereince.

If it weren't for the the Germs, my bloodline would have ended in 1941.
My granddad was 8 when war broke out, this one time he dragged his canoe to the Grevelingen (a former inland part of the sea, now a brakkish lake dyked off from the sea). That afternoon however a rainstorm hit while my 8 y/o granddad was still out and about, pushing the canoe into the open water away from the shore. His boat was taking water, and he was drifting away farther from the shore. The waves rising so high it didn't took long before the shoreline wasn't visible anymore, he thought he was doomed. It was then he saw lights slowly closing on his position, it was a German patrol boat. Some long coated fella yanked him out of the water on the patrolboats deck. I dont know what dialogue transpired on that ship, but when they reached the safety of the shorelines the longcoat fella told granddad to spread the good word (AKA: Tell everyone the Germs saved your ass). Rebels were still fighting here and there, so the Germs could use some positive propaganda. Second time the Germs saved his hide was when rebels (verzetsstrrijders) ambushed some German patrols when he was biking home after buying milk, the kid landed in a crossfire on a countryroad with no real cover nearby. Some Germ dragged him in a ditch out of the line of fire. Atleast that time one could argue that if the Germs woudn't have been there, there would have been no shootout so he wouldn't need saving anyway....The Grevelingen situation however...Granddad was stubborn AF, he would have gone conoeing that fatefull day, one way or the other. In a parallel universe I wouldn't have existed.
Not saying the Axis were even close to being right, but on an individual level there were some very fine men serving and doing their part.

The story got retold and added to by his friends and the American officer he surrendered to. 60 years later the story O got when I visited my cousin in Tulsa was “ He decapitated the SS officers that had accompanied his platoon and offered the heads to the Americans” my cousin was very surprised that the actual story was more along the lines of “Wehrmacht officer stabs SS officer, steals his watch and cigarettes and talks his friends into surrendering to the Americans, because the British intelligence service told him, that he should drop his cover and go to the Americans” (yeah, turned out he was a British spy.)

But what he was referring to is, and I am sure you have noticed this, there has been a huge tendency especially in recent years where Nazi Germany has been assessed in an extremely ignorant black and white way: the "evil murderous" SS and the "Righteous honourable" Wehrmacht. It's a myth that has been cultivated since the war ended and although it has fallen flat on its arse from research and testimonies, it is still widely believed.

@Miuziiiijke You know your stuff. It's quite scary when you hop onto the comment section of any WWII video and you see those certain types of people that say something along the lines of "Most Germans did not believe in Nazism" or how the wehrmacht was just fighting the war and hated the SS. It's as ignorant and misinforming as the myth of 'all Germans were bad' itself.
I feel their intentions are good but when spreading ignorance that would be made redundant with the quickest search on Google, people like that need to take more responsibility. Goebbels himself said that the bigger the lie and the more often you tell it, the more people will start to believe it.

The were armed. There were whole divisions equipped with tanks and everything, often more up to date equipment then the army. I think they got tigers and king tigers first. The waffen (armed) ss were technically not part of the wermacht and more Hitler's private millita. They were closer to a wermacht unit then the others but still ss. They weren't just Gestapo and the camp runners or body guards. They were right through the entire government/ millitary construct of the Reich. Especially after the staufenburg plot. He started to think the whole millitary was out to get him so gave the ss even more power and influence. They also armed foreign troops because they had recruitment restrictions forced on them by the wermacht and it was an easy way to get around them.

@@canadianloyalist5491 Your comment was hearted/liked before I commented.
In this case, the lapel patches dictate the uniform. The Waffen SS used lightening bolt and diamond runes on the lapels, and the Totenkopf (death head) was kept for the hats (across the SS as a whole).
Panzer uniforms used a single skull on each lapel. The overall uniform here is also more reminiscent of a mechanic jumpsuit, which panzer crew were.
Its a humorous video, and very good one at that, so I'm really just nitpicking. Historical accuracy is not necessarily strived for, as much as I think they do try a reasonable effort. To your last comment, many of the Waffen SS most certainly saw combat alongside regular Heer infantry. As did the SS Panzer brigades. The Allgemeine SS were the bureaucrats and concentration/deathly camp guards. Regardless, both were part of the same criminal organisation.

My great uncle was "Luftwaffe" during WWII. At least that's what that side of the family tells. When the end was near he had his family destroy all records and photos of him and then he ended himself. My great grand mother (his sister who had left Germany after WWI) had the only surviving photo of him. I saw it once. He was a low ranking army officer who jumped on the Nazi party bandwagon too late to significantly advance his career. What I have is two decades of postcards my great grandmother received from her family in the old country. Quite telling that in the years prior to WWII the rise of the Nazis was not discussed as a matter of ideology, but as a division of loot. Great uncle Otto got a promotion and a transfer to an influential position, it would be so much more money than before, and they would be getting a car and a house and vacations at the sea when the government redistributed the nation's stolen wealth. The promise of spoils is why they supported the Nazis. Of course the high ranking Nazis redistributed everything they stole to themselves. By the end everyone knew they'd been conned. Never believe the "we didn't know what was happening" lie. People knew, but because they saw others getting rich they kept their mouths shut hoping to get some of the "redistributed" wealth for themselves.

@@semtheprogamingmaster8610 Well it does make a lot of sense. If you where allowed to edit the comment and a bit chintzy, you could theoretically fish for a heart and then rewrite the whole comment to be absolutely abhorring, making the creator look bad and/or distasteful. No youtuber would dare heart a comment if that where possible.

Whatever they pay you for your ads isn't nearly enough. You (and Sydney Watson) are the ONLY UA-camrs whose in-video ads I don't skip.

It is always a great day when I see a new Squire video at the top of my YT list. I wish there was another level of YT Alert above the "All" Bell. I would use it on a very, very select number of channels, probably fewer than 1 dozen. Squire would be one of those. Even Squire's adverts are funny...sometimes better than the actual content...LOL.
In a single video, Bill shoots Ollie twice: in the advert, then in the content. Hmmm...perhaps we need to explore how Bill REALLY feels about Olie.
