I've always wondered why modern Levi's never look as flattering as the ones people wore in movies and other media throughout the 20th century. Two examples from the 1950s that come to mind are Marilyn Monroe, who wore 701's (a different cut, I know), and they looked great, and Marlon Brando with his pair in The Wild One. Shoutout to Den in Denim for all your Levi's history needs-except for this lower pocket change, surprisingly. Maybe I just missed the video where he talked about it. But now it all makes sense. Thanks, HarryHas!
Agree with everything! Also I had no idea about the Levi's pockets - now that you've pointed that out I will never be able to un-see the saggy bottom 🤣
Me too and I hadn't noticed that either before. Although it seems that a current pair of new Levi's 501 Original Fit for women sold from the Levi's store still has those back pockets in the right place. 🙌🏼
I tried on a pair of Levi’s this past weekend and my gf told me the back pockets made my butt look flat. I didn’t notice it at first but saw it after. Had no idea they lowered the pockets but you’ve just confirmed it!
@@for_nothing_important chinos shorts sweatpants I guess. I never really paid attention to what I was wearing until like the last year or so and never had any jeans that fit well so just never wore them
It doesn't matter where they are made. It depends on artisans and quality inspection. My family and I have bought 2 *amzclothes* clothes in the past 3 years and I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
I literally JUST started to look for some second hand levis jeans on vinted and you dropped this video. I'm taking this as a sign to keep on looking and find some good denim there!
Completely agree on everything expect for the vintage military stuff. From my experience owning a WW2 na1 deck jacket and a Vietnam era MA1 Bomber & OG107 those pieces are amazing but are much more delicate than they were when they were made 60-80 years ago. Over time they aged amazingly but the cotton starts to dry rot and the pant fabric became really thin from repeated wash. I look at it as a vintage car; love having it and being able to drive it but I want a modern alternative for a daily. Obviously a personal option. Appreciate the consistent thoughtful content
I don’t really have a lot of business smart casual stuff as I don’t really need it so I’m probably not the best to show that off with the wardrobe I currently have.
Thrift stores don't have vintage Levis. Online sellers or the original owners put them online for more than they are worth. Anything that isn't complete junk is $80 after shipping. If you want higher pockets get Wranglers for $30ish on sale.
Good point on the Levi's back pocket, never noticed that - just that I don't like the new Levi's anymore 🙂 It's no secret that they're worse than they used to be, but when I recently wanted to give pair of 555s try, it was almost shocking how cheap the quality felt compared to some older ones.
The bad thing for me is that, since I live in a small town, there are no thrift shops around. Even in bigger cities, it's very hard to find thrift shops with good quality garments. My only option is purchasing online, with the risk that the item is not in a good condition. Italy is definitely the worst place to look for second hand/vintage clothing shops.
Where I live it’s the same but I have places an hour away. Online is your best bet if you don’t have thrift stores close to you. You can find anything online
I'm in the same situation. I live in a suburb of Birmingham and people generally donate clothes to charity shops when someone dies. If you are on the lookout for brown, C&A acrylic cardigans they've got you covered. Leather jackets, not so much.
Italy is also quite renowned for it's manufacturing. Whether wools, denim, leather, or textiles. Meaning their mantra will always be what drives THAT industry forward. Chances are quite high that, unless these pieces are being imported from elsewhere (re: at a higher rate, so turnover is much lower) you won't see them second hand. Versus in the US and UK (depending on population and neighborhood, obviously) these pieces are being imported at a much higher rate due to a smaller manufacturing sector / manufacturing simply not occurring in that area. Tldr; the more reliant a population is on importing goods the more likely second hand goods will be available.
outerwear in general. I got a trench-coat and a duffle coat for 10% of their price when new, and I'm looking forward to scoring a tweed coat before the next winter comes.
Yellow pit stains can generally be washed out of T shirts and shirt collars by soaking in sodium percarbonate (the active ingredient of Oxyclean) in very hot water and also using Alconox enzymatic detergent (very effective for biologic/protein stains such as sweat or blood, apply sparingly because it is fairly expensive).
Brooks Brothers shirts - A new Brooks OCBD shirt costs more than 200USD. I was buying pre-owned shirts on Ebay for less than 50USD. There are even new factory seconds available, which have tiny mill errors in the fabric (which are invisible from more than about 8 inches away). In either case, you can't tell the difference from the new shirts.
I agree with pretty much everything you say, but I live in an area with really slim stock for men in every thrift store within fifty miles. I frequent all of the ones around me and rarely find anything that isn't formal wear or blanks, which obviously have their place, but are not what I'm usually looking for. If I do find something interesting, the stores around me have started to sell items, particularly jackets, for upwards of $80 or so dollars (these stay in store for months, go figure).
You can find vintage boots for ridiculous prices than still have stickers inside them intact. One pair I bought, made of oily nubuck, was covered with wax by the previous owner who'd worn them just a couple times. A bit of acetone, a bit of cream for oily leather and they looked brand new.
Haha, just received my Carhartt OG Detroit (winter) Jacket yesterday. Today I stumbled upon your channel and this video… used belt is a good idea, haven’t thought it and actually need one or two.
I’ve worn Levi’s 501s since 1984. Used to by new and vintage in the 1980s. The 501 changed in the 80s as in the move from selvage to non selvage. In the 90s the fit changed and I think it was a improvement as the pockets were raised higher the rise was a bit higher and the fit seemed more flattering. I would recommend buying 90s 501s as you won’t pay a extortionate price and the quality is good especially if made in the USA. If you want new buy unwashed shrink to fit. I also notice the quality of 501s was awful I returned 2 pairs because the outer seams were lumpy and not straight. This seems to have been a problem for some time
Id add wool items. New wool items are lesser quality and expensive but older stuff is pretty nice. Only thing to worry about is the cut and any holes and maybe smell. Older wool coats are def roomier and boxier ime. Mil surp in the more civilian solid color casual wear style are kinda drying up now. And its much more modern camo stuff.
I wear my dads old belts he got from the state that was just cut to size when you bought them you would pick out the belt and then they would cut it to your size back from the 80s/90s and there still good to go today
hot take - skinny jeans becoming a trend in the 2000's and 2010's was never going to stick. a lot of people wore the sized down 501's and 505's decades ago. Skinny jeans wasn't a new concept. But after the back pocket being moved, the 2000's shift to more low-rise denim instead of vintage higher waist, and lower quality materials...it was all destined to be bad lol. So when they're super slim with a vintage pair, they just *work*
Don't overlook purchasing new items from the original manufacturer when they have exceptional sales having additional discounts on their already closeout items (available on limited sizes stocks). These short term additional discount special sales are usually only on US labor day and "black Friday". This last Labor Day I bought quit3 a few top quality original garments for approximately 10%-20% of their list prices. These very desirable items normally are priced at between 30%-50% on used and secondary/irrgulars markets.
I think most underwear sold at thrift stores is new, just donated or extra stock, but still in original packaging. I get a lot of my undies from there, and while the selection isn’t as great as online, it is better than Walmart and a lot of basic clothes stores
Nice sugesstion, there are some of them i want to buy new, but i guess u right. For varsity, gladly i got a local cool varsity and cost about $50, ita not that good quality, but i rarely use varsity, especially sukajan, these sukajan varsity are really cool
Awesome video. Nothing says unique style like a one of a kind, show stopping 2nd hand piece. So many people are buying poorly made fast fashion when they could be owning it in stylish high quality heritage brands. Thanks for giving this great topic a callout.
Jeans conform to shape of the user over time. So new jeans end up fitting the shape of your body. Even after washing, the creases and wear areas stay. Loose fitting jeans are ok second hand
as someone who’s spent countless hours trying to find the right vintage detroit jacket for me, it’s just not worth the effort. carhartt WIP has just re-released the OG winter detroit jacket on their website. it’s £230, which is honestly lower than most of the vintage detroits that i’ve looked for. not to mention the fact that you’ll pretty much only find them in ridiculously large sizes, or they are completely frayed and half destroyed. if they aren’t one or both of these things, they’re about £400. while the quality of a vintage jacket is definitely better, it’s just not worth it. either buy fake or just get the WIP one, it is significantly easier than finding a good real vintage jacket in the right size and in decent condition.
This has been my experience the past couple of weeks. Wanted a Detroit jacket, thought it was a fairly standard item like a Levis jacket or something. Everyone recommends going for a seconds one and that they're easy to find. Bollocks! Perhaps in the US they're easily and cheaply found, but all I find here in the UK is reworks or second hand which cost the same or more than a new one. Add into the mix all the fakes, and shopping for these second hand is pretty much a waste of time. I've seen M&S have a wool lined Detroit style jacket for around £70, think I'd rather buy that now as Carhartt's wound me up lol.
Easy to say but where do you buy these fabulous vintage clothes? I have been to a few shops and all clothes are awful, mostly from China in the first place.
I would also like to add, expensive resoleable shoes and boots (i.e. Allen Edmonds). They will just about last forever and there's really no need to spend $300-500 on a new pair when you can get a lightly worn pair for sub $100.
When I saw the jeans in the thumbnail, I was getting ready to disagree with you in the comments. I just like the unique style that unwashed blue jeans develop over time. But since this is specifically about Levi's jeans, I agree with you. Thanks for the video and see ya.
Always wondered what stuff is worth buying at full price and not at full price 🤔. Great use of the Filthy Frank meme! Looking forward to the next outro, LOL
The Military Surplus should have been named Military Style. ALL military surplus is by it's very name "used" meaning you weren't the first buyer. However, you can get unused military surplus when a government has a surplus of stock that was not given out before it was discontinued. In this case, unused military surplus is what the civy world calls "new dead stock" (when new items don't get sold but the store wants to get rid of it to make space for new stock OR when you buy something but end up selling or giving it away unused with the tags still on it. There are also "military" items that are not surplus, but rather a company that once held a military contract, continues to make an item under that contract specs but sells them directly to the non-military market. Flight jackets, wool watch caps, etc.
I disagree on leather jackets, yeah if you want a good worn look right now then sure go vintage. But if you want something of your own that'll look amazing in 5-10+ years then buy a new one. Only if you want to be that dashing old guy in his awesome jacket that makes it look like you have stories to tell, something that if you pass away and a family member gets it they feel like a part of you is with them at all times. But if you wanna be trendy and cant buy something knowing it will pay off in the long run then vintage is fine. Edit because i just finished that section. Yes your vintage jacket will have some character to it, but it will be someone else's character, i prefer to embed my own character into my clothing.
I half agree with levi's jeans. Theres so many different models and revisions from the years that if you go to a thrift store I find you have no idea how theyll fit based on model number or size. Im usually a 32 waist and Ill find a pair of 517 levis at the thrift tagged size 37 and theyll barely fit me in the waist and be too tight in the thigh... Or ill find some 505s in my size with a skinny leg somehow. I actually have been buying new levis from their webstore and they all have fit as intended.
Yeah, the old fits are all smaller in the waist than they say. Most online stores and places like eBay measure them out for you so you know if they will fit or not
There’s also a difference between 45$ Levis and Levis Premium. That’s where you get into the 100$+ range, but the quality in hardware, leather patch, cotton, and stitching is far superior.
I love Levi's jeans and cargo pants, but I haven't got one thrift shopping, but I almost had a pair of Levi's cargo pants super nice and in really good condition but there were too big in my waist, hadn't given up.
I think this is the first video I've seen with the info on Levi's changing the location of the pockets in the mid 2000's. That was fantastic, Harry.

Great point about the pocket positioning on jeans - not sure why so many brands do this!😅

Everything you talk about in your video is very interesting, but does this also apply to accessories like wallets?
Look especially at the wallets because in my case I bought one of the fashionable ones and well, the worst mistake in a long time.
why what happened to him? and what did you do?
The material began to wear out very quickly due to my work and it became very ugly so I had to buy another one

But you can still get leather jackets 2nd hand that haven’t been worn saving you lots of money.
@@HarryHas Aye fair enough actually, that’s very true 😅
Not exactly sure why anyone would by used clothes, but it’s not for me. I would rather be the one to buy something new and break it in myself.
I'm just about to buy a pair of Levi's jeans and a Carhartt jacket, so thank you :D
Amazing video as always, but let’s talk about that amazing chain. Is it a mariners link?
Thank you. It’s from Serge Denimes
I don’t like second-hand stuff. So I’ll stick to buying new
I half agree with levi's jeans.
I love Levi's jeans and cargo pants, but I haven't got one thrift shopping, but I almost had a pair of Levi's cargo pants super nice and in really good condition but there were too big in my waist, hadn't given up.
does buying new underwear at thrift store prices make me a nasty dirty monster? If so I'll stick to it. Great vid. Made me smile😊
Thank you bro
