      I'm sure that others have said it but the "Pulse" concert version of this song adds visual layers and textures to perhaps an even stronger musical performance. You will see why people consider Floyd to be perhaps the best band ever.

    I've watched dozens, at least, reactions to this song and this wonderful young man here is the FIRST to actually pause and comment on the 2, possibly most profound lines
    ever put to music: "The child is grown. The dream is gone.". Those 2 lines express all the hurt and loss conveyed in this song, the entire album, life as a whole.
    I;'d hug you if I could. Thank you.

    • @YonatanZunger
      @YonatanZunger 2 роки тому +16

      Thinking about it, these lines are really the heart of the whole album. It's the moment of actual revelation of the truth, in the madness- and drug-induced haze, that triggers the entire catharsis. The collapse of the wall at the end is symbolic, but this line is where the meat is.
      Gods, I love Pink Floyd. I've been listening to them since high school and they never get old, just more layered.

      That whole verse;
      "When I was a child
      I caught a fleeing glimpse
      Out of the corner of my eye
      I turned to look, but it was gone
      I can not put my finger on it now
      The child is grown
      The dream is gone"
      Will go down as a major poetic verse of the twentieth century

    Sounds like you've been properly Floyded. Pink Floyd features one of the greatest guitarist and one of the greatest lyricists in Rock history. Backed up by a keyboardist/synth player that'll make you forget what planet you're on. And a drummer that brings the drama, the heart, the soul, whatever you need. And vocals that are in a class by themselves. Literally no one else sounds like them. Check out "Time" by them next, from one of the biggest selling albums of all time 'Dark Side of the Moon'. (And yes.. that is parts of a symphonic orchestra in the background of Comfortably Numb).

    Pink Floyd is a very, very special Rock Band, they are a Vibe all on their own. Pink Floyd's Spacey sound is mesmerizing, people have actually said they had an out of body experience! I'm not kidding. The listener is moved by Pink Floyds music, they take you on a cerebral Journy so to speak. A big part of that is David Gilmours' guitar playing.
    I've been a PF fan since 1973 when they released their "Dark Side of the Moon" album, I was 17. I was fortunate enough to get tickets too see them on their The Wall world Tour in 1980. That was the most incredible Show I've ever seen, to call it a concert does it a disservice.
    Pink Floyd was formed in London in 1964, today they have sold over 400 million, (and counting), albums worldwide. Only the Beatles have sold more albums, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin go back and forth for second place.
    The original band consisted of Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Rick Wright, Syd Barrett had to leave the band in 1967 for mental health and drug issues, David Gilmour, took over for Barrett in 1968, and is still active today!
    There's so much more to say but this is obviously not the venue to do so, so I;ll end with this. If you decide to go down this wonderful rabbit hole named Pink Floyd, you're in for a real treat!
    You will hear some of the most incredible music you'll ever hear for the rest of your life. You'll also SEE some of the most phenomenal live Rock performances of light and lazar shows you'll ever see

      Btw, Gilmour's voice is almost as effective as his guitar in many a Floyd songs. His is the perfect voice to interpret Roger's dark introspective lyrics. I think the song "Wish You Were Here" is a perfect example. I've witnessed reactors moved to tears just based on his voice alone without even fully understanding the lyrics.

    Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Pink Floyd. Its classified as psychedelic/acid or experimental Rock. What is so amazing is, this band was formed in 1965...!
    They were so far ahead of their time that they sound just as good now as back then. The best way to experience them, which I would recommend with Comfortably Numb now, is dim the lights, have a beverage of choice, put the headphones on, turn it up and let it take you to your happy place.
    The Pluse concert live with this song and any others is truly mind blowing. So much better live.

Animals is probably my favorite album but as I’m sure others have or will tell you, they tend to write concept albums that are intended to be listened to as an album rather than picking songs at random. Random is fine to start with though, especially for reactions but as you fall in love with their sound you can do whole albums.

He took my papers & went up to his car & told me to get in on the passenger side . He had this song playing on his cassette deck when I got in . And without thinking I sang along with the chorus 🎼 I have become comfortably numb 🎶. I caught myself & turned to look at him , he was staring at me . The whole album (The Wall) is just one long journey seen through troubled eyes. Though not autobiographical, it borrows heavily from Roger Waters childhood.
    Dave Gilmour's outro guitar solo is arguably the best solo in the world but, as already commented, the Pulse (1994?) gig has the most amazing extended version which shows the masterful skill he employs on how to guitar solo WITH the band & not some Prima Donna one man show. Amazing.
    As you say, it's not really reaction material, even so well done & treat yourself to: The Wall.

    I always liked to listen to them in the dark. A lot of other older bands as well. I find reducing using my eyes, enhances my ears. You are the first one to say,that I have heard, that this is not a good reaction song and I feel the same way. Try listening to a PF album in it's entirety, in one sitting/laying. In my opinion PF is best savored full album, any, rather than just a little taste. In the dark of course😎👍. You are doing a very nice job🙌💯

    The Wall is probably the best concept album ever made. As such doing the song's as reactions isn't ideal. Eventually you'll want to.listen to to he whole album in order. One of the things that makes it the best concept album, is they didn't just make videos they made whole movie, and that's probably the best way to experience it. I'd react to Another Brick in the Wall first at least, maybe Run Like Hell and Dirty Woman too. Great reaction! (What you're hearing is a full symphony with the full band and great early use of synthesizer. Also probably the ultimate lyrical content of Roger Waters, lead singer. I believe the album was inspired by the band's original lead singer Syd Barrett who literally lost his mind)

    • @JoeTomasone
      @JoeTomasone Рік тому

      Partially, but greatly by Roger Waters himself. His father died in WWII (A member of the Royal Fusiliers Company C) and that void is one of many “bricks in the wall”. So it’s partly autobiographical, party an homage of sorts to Syd, and partially fictionally embellished.

    Reason the beginning seems strange is the whole album flows from one song to the next. There's little things between the songs telling a larger story. It was made into a movie. Pink Floyd albums can be like that, Dark Side of the Moon is seemless in that, flowing one song after another through the whole album. This one, the Wall album, tells more of a specific story about a character, but Dark Side is more about universal subjects of life, death, etc.

    In terms of 'feeling' Pink Floyd, they experimented with sound on a lot of their albums, and one of the few to try Quadraphonic sound where it is balanced between 4 speakers instead of the 2 of stereo sound which is what became the norm. They tried a lot of stuff....and some would just listen to their albums on weed, or acid and such, really blowing their minds. I think some of that side is what you were feeling, and you are not alone. I love Pink Floyd and so many other bands/groups and singers. Eclectic musical taste is the best.

    As most of Pink Floyd albums, you must listen to them entirely... This song comes from the wall, also a movie with no pause. It's the same for other albums like The Dark Side Of The Moon. You really should react to the Pulse version of that track, in 1994, but without stopping the song, especially the guitar solo, that's so wonderful... My Pink Floyd story:
    I was 8 or nine when my brother brought Dark Side of the Moon home, he would have been 12 or 13. The album had been out a couple of years by then. I remember being pissed with him for bringing home a band with a silly name like that. My brother dropped the needle on side two, the song "Money". My mother, older and younger brother listened and it was a music we had never heard, amazing. This is one of the very few happy memories I have with my family together. I grew up with Pink Floyd. I remember when this Album, The Wall came out. I was 12.

    The answer is in the bending of a note into the next..... it just soars.. and touches the soul. Check out some master cello pieces. His playing and cello masterpieces are tunes to the heart.

    The first time Pink Floyd walked into a studio, a record exec handed them a giant book titled "The Correct Way to Make a Hit Rock Song."
    Pink Floyd opened the book, and flipped through several pages.
    They then snickered, tossed that book out the window, and proceeded to reinvent Rock music, from the ground up.

    I have a theory on why it "feels"
    When playing Dave Gilmour uses "bends" of up to 5 semi-tones (BTW that's hard), instead of just "plucking" a higher note.
    I think this gives your brain time to follow the smooth change in pitch like a ramp as apposed to a staircase. His playing is analogue not digital and I think our brains just love to ride the wave man😉😎

    Everyone wanted to go on a trip in those days. Most of us were trippin' on acid when we listened to Floyd. That REALLY helped us on the journey Floyd takes us on. Everyone wanted to expand their horizons. This song is from "The Wall", which is an album AND a movie. It's all about how the damage inflicted on us as children can have such severe consequences on us as adults. It's very tragic and poignant. You have to hear (and see) the WHOLE THING to fully appreciate it. That's the case with ALL Pink Floyd albums - THEY MUST BE LISTENED TO IN FULL!!! They tell a whole story. Listening to only one song at a time doesn't really get you there. It's like watching one scene from a movie, and thinking you know what the movie's about. You should do FULL-ALBUM reactions! Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall are MUSTS!

    Dude, I love how honest you are. I was born in 1960, and had an older brother that turned me onto music when I was young, brought me to my first ever concert at 14.
    About Pink Floyd. In my opinion, they were, are and ever will be the best/greatest group to have ever played. Their concept albums Dark Side of The Moon, 1973, Wish You Were Here, 1975, Animals, 1977 and The Wall 1979, took 2 years each but paid so much attention to details, each note from each instrument being EXACTLY the correct volume, the lyrics, the overall concepts of what the albums were addressing, they were masterpieces. Dark Side of the Moon STILL holds the record for number of weeks on Top 100 chart, at, ready, over 950 WEEKS!!
    The concept albums should, at an early point at least, be listened to as they were meant to be listened to, which is first to last track, in order, no interruptions. This, you will quickly see, makes it seem like one long song, as it should. And any of their songs you are listening to for the first time, listen to the audio / studio version before doing the live version. This is so you will not be distracted by the performance, and will totally experience the song. THEN listen to a live version, and really WATCH the performance, because Pink Floyd were KNOWN for their live shows, I have seen them twice. Lights, effects, and lengthened performances.
    One more thing. A lot of people will tell you to watch the Pulse version of this song. I agree, but would add that you listen to the UNCUT version. Here's why : David Gilmour (guitarist for Pink Floyd) thought he heard a couple of 'iffy' notes, so decided to edit them out. Okay, I think I even figured out which notes. But in order to make the video seamless, so that nobody notices it has been edited, over one minute of David Gilmour's guitar finale had to be cut. Now, for the 2 or 3 seconds the 'iffy' notes play, to lose 1 minute and some seconds of none-iffy David Gilmour guitar seems almost a crime. So, please, react to Comfortably Numb, Pulse Tour, UNCUT, it should be 10:59, not 9:52.
    Of course, no space now to get into Syd Barrett (original guitarist/founding member), of the meanings of individual albums/songs, but keep on dong them, you'll keep getting info.

    Thanks for your reaction! It's so refreshing to see new generation(s) buying into the music of yesteryear.
    My dad grew up listening to Pink Floyd and introduced me to Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall as a kid. To me, there are a few things that set Pink Floyd apart that you clearly heard, but may not have been able to describe.
    1) High production value - Pink Floyd goes for big bodies of sound. It's almost to the point of a small symphony production. You talked about how many instruments were backing up the main solo guitar. If you watch them live, you'll see that they had the standard guitar and bass along with a rhythm guitarist, a keyboardist with 3 or 4 different electronic keyboards keyed up for various sounds, a drummer with a kit the size of a small country, each band member did backup vocals, and then they also usually have at least 3 other backup vocalists. And that's without getting into digital sampling, which you also clearly heard, and was still relatively new when they started in the 60s.
    2) Blues - The guitarists who inspired David Gilmour were blues and folk. Wikipedia cites Pete Seeger, Lead Belly, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, John Fahey, Roy Buchanan, and Hank Marvin as influences on his style. You can definitely hear the emotive blue "storytelling" with his guitar solos that seem to capture the distant sadness and longing for those childhood fleeting glimpses.
    3) Lyrics - Most Pink Floyd songs and Comfortably Numb in particular are instantly relatable to any adult who has struggled with shattered idealism, which is basically all of us (despite the fact that the song is contextualized in the 1982 movie "The Wall" as a song about a guy getting a shot of epinephrine in the heart to counter a drug overdose). The lyrics tie together the big body sound and blues influence to make it irresistible (to most).
