@@fishhookism Yes, you’re the only commenter that I’ve seen got this correct. Except, Roger Waters had a stomach virus & got a shot from a doctor that made him “comfortably numb.” Not sure about the other drugs referred to, but could be true.
I love your reactions. The entire Wall album is a descriptor of the journey through childhood trauma from parents and teachers resulting in a self medicated adult struggling to cope.
This is why I shake my head at Boomers that still believe ridiculous things like "spare the rod spoil the child" and joke about beating their children. Complaining kids these days are raised "soft" Maybe you all traumatized your own children so much they want better for their children. Maybe how kids these days are raised isn't perfect but it's worlds better than how barbaric it used to be. Even Pink Floyd was singing about how bad it was back in the 70's and 80's.
@@Mojo_3.14 Most people whose parents gave them a kick in the ass when they asked for it will tell you as adults they're glad they did because it made them better people. If you actually watched the wall it wasn't because his mother hit him, it's the opposite, she over protected him from the world. Plus he didn't have a Father because he was killed in WW2. She didn't let Pink grow up. She treated him like you seem to be treating your children.
@@Mojo_3.14 I have never heard anyone laugh about beating their children. The Instruction “spare the rod spoil the child” comes directly from the Bible. When people live in accordance with the teachings of God, and I mean actually do it the right way, their children grow up to be good, decent people. People who actually care about right and wrong, unlike so many younger people nowadays who seem to have the moral values of Attila the Hun. Stealing, burning, destroying the belongings of others and committing murder all as if they have a right to do so comes from being raised with no moral compass. In other words, not having been raised properly in accordance with the Word of God. About fifty years ago many people decided to turn their backs on God and it is abundantly clear what a huge mistake that was. My parents raised me and my siblings in accordance to the Word of God and we were never beaten or abused in any way. We grew up to be decent, law abiding citizens who love God and our fellow man. Pink Floyd may have made some good music but I certainly wouldn’t look to them, or any musical group, as a barometer of right and wrong. Please understand I am Not saying you do. Also, being spanked is not anything at all like being beaten. Those two things are as different as night and day and bring completely different results. Above all, we must abide in love for one another. The Bible never instructs parents to be mean to their children or to anyone.
Your friend is a quick learner. He said kick back close your eyes and relax. When I was a teenager I knew to do that too. Thank you Jay for passing on our great music.

I was 22 in 1979 when this song came out. I had an apartment on the beach with a coquina fireplace ( it was an old building) and I used to love watching the fire at night with this album playing. Talk about chilling - it was perfect. That was the time of the guitar hero and David Gilmour was the King. Great choice Jayvee!!
i listened to this at 13 years old when my mum played it when she was drunk but so sad, it was amazing and i can’t explain how much the song effected me
I heard Pink Floyd all through my adolescence. I couldn’t understand tabs why my parents were so attached to the music. I just always enjoyed singing along bc it was fun. I now realize it was bc they were processing their own traumas with abuse and drug usage. At age 35 and processing the lyrics myself, I totally get why they played it religiously. It’s therapeutic...

As we get older there are alot of tracks that can remind us of friends and family who have passed, I know that feeling bud, 🙏... not always sad... sometime joy of the time you had with them... bless ya 🙏
In an interview released in the 80s, Waters said that much of the song comes from something that really happened one evening when, in order to allow him to perform in Philadelphia, the doctor gave him a sedative for a severe stomach ache, which had probably caused by nerves. On the stage, his hands were numb and his vision blurred, but none of this derailed the crowd, who continued to dance and sing. And it was out of this that one of the main themes of The Wall came about: the disconnect between the public and the band.
I cant listen to this song without tearing up. I suffer from chronic depression and anxiety which has made me isolate from society more and more over the years..and thats exactly how im feeling these days..comfortably numb. As dead as one can be while still alive.

In my humble opinion, the greatest song ever made. Although I prefer the Pulse version, where the guitar solo is about 6 minutes long and the song is complete.
I remember taking naps on the couch with my dad when I was little and we’d fall asleep to this cd. I think one of the things that my dad gave me that I really cherish is my taste in music. He had me listening to everything when I was growing up and I really appreciate that. Because of him I listen to just about everything. He fostered that in me and once I was old enough to start finding my own interests in music I was able to show them to him and have him appreciate them with me even if it wasn’t something that he’d ever listen to. God I miss him so fucking much. RIP Dad🧡
This song is only part of the story. The entire album is a Rock Opera that tells the story of one man's tragic life. In other words every song on the album is related to every other song...each telling part of the story. This album "The Wall" was turned into a movie (with amazing animations mixed into the film). It is a politically charged anti war film and a absolute masterpiece. You should definitely take the time to watch it.
"just nod if you can hear me. .." Both of you guys are bobbing your heads to the beat. Love it. Great analysis, by the way. I never considered what you said.
"Hands felt just like two balloons" - being so ill you've become delirious and detached from reality, Roger Waters once explained this in an interview that he had the experience as a child with a very high fever. However here, the main character/singer is being injected with drugs, and feels a similar detachment and delirium. Comfortably numb.
They changed the concept of this song for the movie, but the true meaning of this song stems from an incident Roger had two years prior while playing at the Spectrum in Philadelphia....and it has nothing to do with heroin.
@@toddpeucker9905 “just a little pin prick” seems like it has to do with drugs to me even if the og concept was different they changed it so it’s no longer the concept
@@craighodges6356 The song on the album is the retelling of a true incident that happened two years before the album and subsequent film. The song in the film has its own fictional meaning to fit the film's narrative....so two meanings, for two mediums of entertainment...truth for album, changed depiction for film.
Also got to see them perform this song in Cleveland in 87. Was 10 rows back directly in front of Gilmore standing in a rain storm and VERY comfortably numb. I still have dreams after all these years about that night!!!
Fun fact: when you say "this is my boy" I just thought: "His boy? He does look very young to have a son this age..".... Intercultural misunderstandings, haha. Greetings from Germany.
You know what guys...i so appreciate the way you sample and evaluate what you're listening to. That song was about a band member who died of drug overdose. You were never disrespectful even when you didn't truly understand. You are doing a great service to bring us all together...
When I was 9, my parents almost divorced because my father took me to see Pink Floyd. Best light show in the world! But what these guys got wrong 1. The Wall was the first concept album. There is a definite story, and the album takes you on this journey where every hurt. Every pain that he suffers is another brick. In concert, the made this massive wall, and they tore it down at the end. It was epic! 2. This song is about drugs. Specifically, heroin. It is the introduction, the happy phase, and then the dark addiction. “Ok, just a little pin prick, you may feel a little sick… that’ll keep you going”. Comfortably numb is the tell tale nod of heroin. You don’t feel anything. You just stop and relax, comfortably numb. And eventually, that’s your life. You cease to participate in life. This band was infamous for drug abuse, doing shows just for acid trips, and Sid Barrett actually went crazy from all the drugs. Apparently he spent a month high on acid without a break and went bats-t crazy. The song “wish you were here”. Is about him. And wishing he was even present in his mind.
"Comfortably Numb" is the definitive song for testing whether a First Reaction poster is really hearing it for the first time or is faking it. The tell is that people who haven't heard it before understand David Gilmour's lyrics, but not Roger Waters's. Most of them don't seem to recognize that there are two vocalists, and thus two different characters. It dramatically changes the understanding of the song. You don't necessarily pick up on the menace of the Waters character (a mashup of the childhood doctor and Pink's manager, played by Bob Hoskins in the movie).
You are introducing real music with emotion, depth and universal meaning to a generation that has been inculcated with sugar pop and crap rap. God-bless you.
This song is a perfect of example of "the minor fall and the major lift" referred to in Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." The verse is in a slightly spooky minor key; in the bridge, the key shifts to major, giving that first guitar solo a euphoric, soaring quality.

@@fishhookism To this day I picture Bob Hoskins frantically running around while Bob Geldof drools in a chair with freshly missing eyebrows.
Yes! Thank you. Such an accurate explanation.
One of the best summaries of The Wall I've heard. Well done sir.
I don't know who your buddy is but he needs to hear more Pink Floyd.
11:24 that smile tells me everything guys. Big love from Poland and huge Floyd fan :D
Hey Buddy: we were always so buzzed out back then, we just sat back and chilled listening to this amazing music. Cheers Friend.
Your friend is a quick learner. He said kick back close your eyes and relax. When I was a teenager I knew to do that too. Thank you Jay for passing on our great music.
This song has so many meanings. Each one personal to each person who is listening.
I feel like that is every Pink Floyd song
This song is so chill! I can't believe my parents and Grandparents listened to them also!
I can't imagine my grandfather listening to this but then he was born in 1918. I think.
@@heididietrich9800 lol, you never know. Pink Floyd has a way with all ages. When they introduced me to it I was like "You listened to this?!" lol
@@lilyraiyne9225 I wonder why you reacted that way? Do your parents listen to a lot of Baptist hymns or something? My parents are boomers, so I grew up listening to this music and assumed that most people from my parent's age and younger did as well.
@@celinahatton2653 Not sure why my reaction was pointed out... What I meant was, I thought it was cool that I could connect with my family through music, regardless the gaps between our Generations and that Pink Floyd's sound still is something to resonate with in today's age as it was for them. And no my parents never listened to hymns. My Dad likes Country and my Mom always liked soul and R&B. Hope this helps your questions and curiosity. Have a great day.🙂
@@lilyraiyne9225 sorry if my question sounded rude- I did not mean it as such. I was just surprised that you said you 'couldn't believe' that your parents and grandparents listened to PF, whereas in my experience it would be extremely odd if they did not, given that PF is their generation.
Life changes when you hear that second solo, that solo will make you emotional, especially as a guitar player, that second solo is just an ongoing project for me, some day I will pull it off perfectly I hope.
Keep practicing. This mf of tricky. A requirement for any guitarist. Actually in the process of teaching it to my young brother in law so we use this video for him as a crutch. Slowed down just enough to practice but not so slow that it doesn't sound like the song. Good version.
ua-cam.com/video/E_zUdhx5Ibk/v-deo.html
Me too currently learning it
How lucky can you be to listen to this masterpiece solo for the first time..
So I was in college when this album was released. Seriously we would all sit around in an apartment, get high and just listen to the different elements of their music. And with albums, you couldn’t skip to the next song, so you listened to the entire album. Great music and great times!!
that sounds awesome! I'm 46 so I'm no kid, but it sounds like I should have been born a tad earlier.
We did the same thing as a 16 year olds in 1990. We thought we'd discovered something new and spectacular.
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
I was 22 in 1979 when this song came out. I had an apartment on the beach with a coquina fireplace ( it was an old building) and I used to love watching the fire at night with this album playing. Talk about chilling - it was perfect. That was the time of the guitar hero and David Gilmour was the King. Great choice Jayvee!!
Hello from the beach
good but never the king during that time frame. this is not a difficult song to play
i listened to this at 13 years old when my mum played it when she was drunk but so sad, it was amazing and i can’t explain how much the song effected me
I heard Pink Floyd all through my adolescence.
The solo was voted the best "solo ever"
No argument here.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JAY!!!!!!!!!!! This is the song that got me hooked on floyd back in the day .... my best friend got me hooked on them and now i listen to this song just one time outta the year to pay respect to my friend that past away 2 years ago ..its a song that is very close to my heart
As we get older there are alot of tracks that can remind us of friends and family who have passed, I know that feeling bud, 🙏... not always sad... sometime joy of the time you had with them... bless ya 🙏
RIP to your friend, Steve. ☮️
This is one of the greatest songs of all time. Goosebumps every time!
I cant listen to this song without tearing up. I suffer from chronic depression and anxiety which has made me isolate from society more and more over the years..and thats exactly how im feeling these days..comfortably numb. As dead as one can be while still alive.
"There's emotion in that."
That IS emotion.
Loved watching you two here. X
Song is from 'The Wall' album. Honest mistake since the cover of Dark Side of the Moon is used as the backdrop for it here.
The prism has been associated with pf since DSOTM
@@elpuko7968 yes but here on UA-cam most songs from various Floyd albums are associated with the album cover those songs are from. Except this one which is associated with the wrong album cover.
@@flubblert yeah, I watched that video, the guy who made it says that he knows it's not from dark side of the moon, but it simply is the most iconic pink floyd representation, so he went with it
Smoke a bowl , put this song on and lay back with your eyes closed, that’s how this song was meant to be experienced ❤️
cliche or not, it's still true
Very true.
Spot on
That’s me right now 😉
... and in quadraphonic!
This is my favorite Pink Floyd song. He's describing the feeling of being high. And the part where he says .. When I was a child I had a fever. My hands felt like two balloons... That really did happen to him as a child. He really did have a dangerously high fever and it caused his hands to feel swollen like balloons. Great pick 🔥🤘😍
Yes ..I forgot who it was but one of the band members got sick before a concert... and thats what inspired this song ... You got it right Shawna!

@@stevepence229 thank you. And so sorry about your friend 😥. This is the song that hooked me as well 💜
That second Guitar Solo is one of the most Iconic Leads in rock.. Most guitar players learn it some point in their life...
Damn, I consider myself a fairly average level guitar player, at least of the people I've played with, and have only known one person to be able to pull off that second solo. I'm working on it, got the first down. Hopefully soon.
Iron Maiden’s been ripping that tone off for years
I have the first down. The second is a work in progress.
The glance across knowing the second solo is about to start. Brilliant 😁
I've been listening to this song for 30 years. Why do the solos still give me chills?
The emotion is too real to deny, you can feel Roger Waters’ pain. The last guitar solo gets me everytime
The look on Jovaughn's face when he's watching his friend appreciating it is the same looks thousands of us have online watching him appreciating something or the first time!
Such a great song...of course I say the same thing about every Pink Floyd song! It takes me back to my partying teen years! Getting stoned makes it 10 times better Lol!
I was a bit younger than my brothers. I remember my oldest had this on record. He used to work at a record bar. I wanted to understand it as a kid, BUT, I loved it none the less.
I also like very weird animation.
Smoke em if you got em🤗..lol
@HAWK80 every once in awhile I still do!
You have to listen to the "Pulse" live version of this, best guitar solo EVER
Absolutely. Emotion on the second solo is a million times more.
The version with David Bowie is excellent also. There is also a fan edit featuring Eddie Vedder .
Best live performance of any song ever I reckon
FACTS!
Watch the live show from Earls Court London 1994 and experience the whole Pink Floyd legend. Enjoy!
David Gilmour is the greatest guitarist of all time. He literally makes his guitar sing.
I love hearing your own interpretation of this song.
I love that you are listening to different Genres. The bands of the 70’s were the best time for music. All music is therapeutic.
You have to listen to the Pulse live version, it’s going to blow your mind
THIS
Absolutely 100% …. It was fantastic to see it live in 1994!
Indeeeeeed
I can just picture Jay’s jaw dropping now
Longest guitar solo in history :)
It has a hint of tragedy to it, doesn't it? And David Gilmore's guitar really expresses it.
No it's when you do acid in the 70's gets pretty deep actually all there music is like that
@@sherrithompson1360 I do acid in the 20s and still get so emotional when I listen to this album.
In my humble opinion, the greatest song ever made. Although I prefer the Pulse version, where the guitar solo is about 6 minutes long and the song is complete.
BLASPHEMOUS!
RIP Dad🧡
now imagine them living through WW2 and then listen to the song again.
Now you need to introduce him to The Great Gig in the Sky!💞🎵🎶
Great reactions today!
I love that song too
The simple smile at 11:21 when the guitar jumps up is priceless and perfectly content!
That was the fastest convert ever. "I'm gonna check this out on my own!"
Quite. The clip from the movie gives meaning to the words... ua-cam.com/video/oIZUJ4Msv7U/v-deo.html

Time goes fast I was 16 years old when the album came out and listen to it every day
Also got to see them perform this song in Cleveland in 87. Was 10 rows back directly in front of Gilmore standing in a rain storm and VERY comfortably numb. I still have dreams after all these years about that night!!!
The memories associated with this song, to be able to go back for one day.
With what we know now.
I'll meet you there. For now I have to settle with closing my eyes.
Fun fact: when you say "this is my boy" I just thought: "His boy? He does look very young to have a son this age..".... Intercultural misunderstandings, haha. Greetings from Germany.
Ah man, you so need to watch the Pulse version. It will blow your mind.
Stop. The full delicate sound of thunder version is 100x better.
Completely agree he has to do comfortably numb pulse live
Absolutely agree
Exactly on point. This is the stuff you put some headsets on, lay back and live in the song. Smoke it if ya got it!
I love how hyped you feel about Floyd Jay. You'll NEVER regret it!
Man I dig how you just appreciate good music. Such a great quality for a young dude! Love your reviews. You really get it!!

Comfortably Numb has what well may be the best guitar riff of all time. Classic David Gilmore. His guitar sound is clean, sharp and penetrating.
They do the same thing with their Album "The Wall" which this song is on, not Dark Side. It's an Epic album about a kid who's dad goes off to fight in World War II and dies and how his Mother smothers him with love and affection so much it cause him emotional damage. The Wall get's built around his Psyche as he tries to interpret his own world.
The live performance of this track takes it to a whole new level.
