"James was a Jack of all trades, and slowly grew into a master of Nunn" 5.49 - 5.52. EPIC quote!
Yo the narrator had some cold ass quotes 😆.
Michael Nunn at his best aswell was a brilliant boxer

Along those from Ali vs Williams, Toney vs Barkley

@@mikebaker6418 as textbook as algebra 2 😂
James Toney was arguably the best P4P fighter in the world in 1994, with the other guy being Pernell Whitaker. So the fact that RJJ dominated him the way he did and in a way no one dominated Toney before or after that, it makes one of the most impressive big fight performances in boxing history.
Real talk. For the longest time growing up, I didn't think much of James Toney because he didn't look cartoonishly fit and was taken apart by Roy Jones jr. But the truth is that James Toney was absolutely amazing and had a first-ballot Hall of Fame worthy career aside from a failed drug test. Jones was just that much better.
I think that if Toney would have kept his weight in check before the fight it would have been a little different the man had to lose 32 pounds right before the fight so there was not much time for sparring and actual training because of the weight problem. They should have pushed the fight date back!
The only reason he dominated him is because of Toney having to cut damn near 50lbs for that fight
@@keithsirmans4556 or fought at a catch weight of maybe 175-180
Yea toney was a problem back in the day like y'all say if he would have catch weight it probably would end up in a draw
In my 50’s, boxed and have been watching since I was a kid. RJJ, in his prime, was the best I ever saw.
I would have to agree. Throw Roberto Duran into that aswell
Im 48..couldnt agree more...the only other guy who had this computer character speed n movement was pacquioa in his prime.
I'm 45 and I 100% Agree. The Best I ever saw in his Prime. The only ones Close was Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard (I didn't see Sugar Ray Robinson or Muhammad Ali as I'm way too young to have seen them in their Prime).
@@Themozartthug The best I ever saw. He toyed with world class fighters. His speed and power will never be replicated. Toss in his ability not get hit and you have the complete package.
@@Themozartthug I enjoyed Prince Naseem. Feel he gets trashed out for his one loss to Barrera. RJJ was too big for him, IMHO

The only fighter I’ve watched that was faster was Ray. I believe he was faster than Mike, though not as big or as strong.
He’s the best ever to do it
He is one of the greatest ever.
Wdym wouldve. He IS THE BEST EVER TO DO IT
I was a teen when Roy was in his prime. Now at 38 years of age and looking back, I personally think he's the greatest boxer I've ever seen. And all I do is watch boxing.
I agree. Greatest ever. I like that he went until someone beat him too.
I think he the greatest talent we ever seen without a question.... I'm 35 n remember asking myself back in 2002 how could he ever lose
@@joshclearwater6461 actually he didn't left before someone beat his ass, he was knocked out, Toney on the other hand despite losses never get knocked out. Personally for me, Toney is a better boxer considering Jones doping issue
I'm 39 and I've never been excited about another boxer like I was about RJJ. I'm also from pensacola myself so it was awesome. Some of his fights it's like he had to hold back to not knock them out too fast.
I cant even think of another fighter that even comes close! Definitely none in modern history. Youd have to go back to Ali, Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, or maybe Floyd Patterson to even come close
I have never in my life saw a fighter as sweet as Roy Jones in his prime, he was so athletically proficient that he didn’t need to set up combinations with a jab, he’d just come in with a leaping hook and knock you out
Best ever by far
The fact he had his left hand low and can still get that hook up quick tells you how fast he was
Roy Jones Jr TBE In His Prime 💪💪💪

Yes! His speed and coordination was abnormally high at the upper limit of human potential.
In his prime years he was the best that I’ve ever seen

Credit and Respect to all opponents that really helped build the best fighter Roy Jones.
Roy's father gets a lot of respect.
He set up his son to succeed in life.
Shocking some of the nasty stuff he put his son through though. Putting him in exhausted after training, against much heavier men and tying one hand behind his back?
Going up to heavyweight and back down to light heavyweight is what altered Roy's career, Living Legend nonetheless!
Yea fighting Ruiz than going back down was a toll on his body
Agreed.
2 absolute legends 🙌
Toney and Jones were tough as nails. However, Jones was just another level with his all-around skills.🙃💦💪🙆👊🥊💯
So glad I found this channel.
Gonna be rough when I've watched the whole back catalogue and have to wait for new uploads lol.
“Even Iran Barkley’s mouthpiece knew it didn’t belong in the ring with James that night.” ~classic commentary
Roy Jones Jr is the truth...his legacy is complicated, to me his career ended after he won the heavyweight title, he pulled out one last great fight against tarver the first fight and the rest is what it was,he should've retired in 2003 but his prime was better than anyone's
I don't know if his prime was better than anyone's. It's hard to judge, and there's been so many great fighters over the years that have had great careers. He'd definitely be right up there though
@Marcus Reed I couldn't agree more. His Prime was better then any fighter I saw or studied of the Modern Era (1970 to Present). While I can't argue he had the Best Career (Start to Finish) of everyone of the last 50 Years, he's Clearly THE BEST I've seen Live or have been able to see through UA-cam and other clips at the Peak of his Powers. If he retires after Ruiz, he would be Top 3 with Sugar Ray Robinson & Muhammad Ali. And think after he beat James Toney in 1994 he went 10 YEARS where there really wasn't any conversation about who was The Best Pound for Pound Fighter. Even Mayweather had people throw Pacquiao against his Claim as the Best from time to time during his run as P4P King.
Agreed. Better prime than Floyd even.
@@samueldavis5895 Agree, Respect Floyd, but Roy was a Whole Different Beast. It was almost like he was Super Human.
@@samueldavis5895 Cap... Light through welterweight has been the most stacked for decades now. Can't take anything away from either fighter but you'd have to be biased to say RJJ faced as many, and same quality champions and contenders Mayweather has.. nice try tho lol, I know where you're really coming from chief lolol.
To be a great champion you need more than talent, you need dedication which Tony had not. But Roy was a different story, that's why he's one of the best. At his prime nobody could beat him for 15 years.
No one in boxing could beat him in his prime
Tony had dedication. He just didn’t have Roy’s abilities.
Tony did have dedication wtf 😭
@@Jusskilll naw he didn’t, he ate bad
What does that have to do with dedication?
Roy in his prime was nearly unstoppable. Too much power, speed, instinct, natural abilities…too much everything. Meet him before his exhibition fight with Tyson. Really nice, down to earth guy who took time for a fan. Thanks Roy!
Those sparring sessions between Roy Jones and Sugar Ray Leonard must've been some of the best boxing anyone has ever seen
What a boxing era 👍👍👍💲💲💲
Badd man 💗😀
late 60’s and the 70’s for heavyweight and late 70’s thru the early 90’s for middle weights.
The commentary on this video is golden! Excellent job! These are very well made
Saw this man fight live 3 times, including James Tony. Spectacular fighter and entertainer. And got to meet Michael Jordan at one of the fights
I saw him fight Mike McCallum in Tampa. I wound up sitting a little behind Foreman.
Roy Jones was the most naturally gifted boxer. His only flaw was that he relied on his natural ability too much & didn't hone his craft like Floyd.
For sure
Well, he really didn't need to...
He just honed his craft around the natural ability and it worked for 15 years. He just fought on too long against top tier fighters plain and simple.
@@comewatchfights9112 he was only 34 when he lost to Tarver & journeyman Glen Johnson while BHop was still beating elite fighters at middleweight to light heavyweight. James Toney was challenging top 10 heavyweights in his late 30s. Stop it.
Floyd's superpower is fighting intelligence and adaptability. 36 year old Money could beat 27 year old Pretty Boy. No one else got better as their physical skills declined. Money doesn't count. He is built different. GOAT Status.
As someone who lived through this era, it is refreshing to see a channel who tell it the way it had happened, rather than rewriting a story after careers are done.
Michael Nunn, with Angelo Dundee in his corner, was also a hell of a fighter. His name doesnt kept up brought much anymore but that guy was a superstar at the time.
He kept that Southpaw straight jab out like a cobra

Sad we never got Roy jones Jr vs Gerald McClellan fight..
It would have been so interesting to see how Roy dealt with such a brutal pressure fighter who had no fear whatsoever. I think a lot of Jones’ opponents sometimes became a little star struck by him and didn’t perform to their best
Or michalczewski. Wish roy would have fought him
James Toney keeps his weight in check and stays at Mid? The guy NEVER loses a fight. He was that damn good. The GOAT ROY, if he retires before his early 30s and stays between Welt-super Mid, he never loses a fight.
The guy is one of the fastest fighters I have ever seen in person. So naturally gifted and so much better than anyone should be. He was like a man fighting children in his prime.
Just lightning. Another epic Rhythm mini doc. Just so so good. I love the way you described Lights Out as effortless, which is so accurate. He almost looked like he was on a Xanax half the time, just picking angles and shots.
Unfortunately he loved the BURGER KING too much
The problem with James staying at middle was that he was a 200lb football player in high school, even his trainers said he was torturing himself to stay at middle. Already being an athlete then losing 40lbs is unbelievably tough and he still looked good and kept power all the way up to cruiser weight. Looking back I think he should have went up the weight classes faster, it what Roy said too.
He should have trained to fight at 185 he would have never lost a fight and he would have lasted longer
@@akeemhudson9769 I agree, cruiser weight was 190 at the time and I thought that was his best weight. He had maybe his best fight ever against Jirov (besides Nunn) and he carried his power up there, he could still knock a cruiser out cold.
@@akeemhudson9769 the man is 5'8"ish. The guys his size usually at around 126 in feather or super feather. No way any man no matter how good he is should be that small and fighting at over 200lbs. He was good enough to slide by at 185 though
If Toney would've come into that fight in shape, he beats Roy. James had to lose something like 20lbs overnight to make weight. You can get away with that against some mediocre fighter, but not against Roy.
THE PERSON NARRATING THE FIGHTS BROKE IT DOWN LIKE IT WAS A MURDER MYSTERY,THE BEST IVE EVER HEARD EXCELLENT JOB 👍

Joe Calzaghe embarrassed RJJ. Brutally.
Mike mccalum who fought both james and RJJ says RJJ was the smarter fighter between the two.
@@deebop4904 LOOOL. Fought a shot Roy… he went from 160 to heavyweight. Do you think he woulda beat a prime Roy? Calzaghe said himself that Roy wasn’t the same fighter after his heavyweight adventure. Calzaghe wouldn’t even have beat Hopkins if they had fought just 3 years earlier.

The James Tony vs Michael Nunn fight is exactly why these new dudes with belts(a lot more belts than back then) don't fight dangerous opponents. A new jack James Tony would never get a fight with a champion in 2022. Facts!💯
Roy was the most entertaining fighter I’ve ever seen. I had no idea he sparred with the great sugar Ray. Makes sense.
Here comes another masterpiece...

Roy fought a smart fight and out worked Toney. You know someone is great when they dominate other greats. He has wins on his resume against Toney and Hopkins. That by itself makes his resume unquestionable.

Roy has always been my favorite boxer behind Iron Mike. I wish that fight would have happened when they tried to get it together the first time but with that said I know 1 thing for sure. If Mike would have been able to catch him 1 time it would have been goodnight. For me those 2 guys were by far the most entertaining fighters to watch growing up in the 80s and 90s. I'm from Louisville like Ali but being born in 79 I didn't get to see any of his fights until years later.
Roy's promoter, Fred Levin, called Don King when Tyson was released from prison to set up that fight. Don King said he would not send his most valuable commodity into a fight with Roy Jones.
@@widespreadcranic Probably a smart move by Don King honestly. Tyson was rusty and really never the same after Prison so to put him directly in the ring with a prime Roy Jones Jr. could have ended in disaster. Imagine what would have happened to Mike's career if he had lost to Roy being a much smaller fighter at that time? He probably would have never been Heavyweight champion again or anything. I still believe Tyson was railroaded by the legal system and that model and thing he should have never went to prison. I would have loved to see what Mike would have done if he didn't have to go through that mess. I dont think he would have lost to Buster Douglass if he wasnt distracted by all of that stuff and then who knows what would have happened.
