That’ll be an interesting cycle, Itoi got inspired from Dragon Quest and made his own game with his own spin on it, Mother/Earthbound. Toby Fox got inspired by Earthbound and created Undertale. Maybe someday someone will create a just as amazing game and his inspiration will be Undertale.

I got married with this song being played on the piano as my beautiful wife walked down the aisle. Finishing this game was the first time we ever cried together and its responsible for some of the happiest memories of my life. Thank you so much, Toby Fox. You made me the happiest man on Earth.

Even though I read a lot of spoilers, i'm about to finish my first run (pacifist, had to) and feel like I just... can't, I don't want it to finish. This game means a lot to me me for many reasons, words can't describe what it is like, but I guess y'all know what I'm talkin' about.

so i did my first run since 2015, i biffed it ofc and may have killed a few and got a neutral ending, however i did do a pacifist run on the side and it made me cry. definately stream-worthy to re-run my pacifist run for a single stream.
simply, i love this game and now truly understand the fans passionate love for toby's immaculate work.
I will remember this comment, when I finally do play Undertale.
A long time ago, a flower woke up in a garden.
The flower was afraid because it had no arms or legs or any body any at all. It screamed and screamed for help. But nobody came.
Eventually, hearing the flower's sobs, ASGORE, the king of all monsters, came running. He did his best to comfort the flower, promising it that everything would be alright. He was overcome with emotion.
But... still... even as the king held him, the flower felt nothing at all.
The flower realized that it was SOULLESS. Without a soul, the flower could not feel love or compassion.
Still, it tried. It spent weeks in the company of the king, vainly trying to feel.
When that failed, the flower ran away to the RUINS. There, the flower found the QUEEN, a being of infinite kindness and love.
Surely, thought the flower, in her company I will feel whole.
... But the flower was wrong.
The flower fell into despair. In a world without love, it no longer desired to live. So, it attempted to leave this world.
But at the last moment, the flower grew afraid. Without a SOUL, the flower did not know what awaited it on the other side. Something primal cried out inside of it. The flower did not want to die.
And then... And then... The flower woke up in the garden again.
The flower realized at any time, whenever it wanted, it could reverse the flow of time back to the moment when it first woke up.
The flower decided to use its new powers for good. It went from person to person in the UNDERGROUND. Solving all of their problems. Becoming their friend. The flower became beloved by all.
But still... it felt nothing.
Then, the flower grew bored. It began to wonder. What would happen if it killed these people?
And so... out of boredom... out of curiosity... the flower killed them all.
Time repeated again and again. Everyone has died. Everyone has been saved. Many, many, many times.
The flower has saved everyone and killed everyone. Read every book and burned every book. And now there is simply nothing left for it to do.
The flower was filled with rage. Now, it only desired one thing. To destroy completely the world that had failed it.
But then... after many timelines had passed, something new happened.
For the first time in many years, a human fell into the Underground.
And the flower realized...
That human would be its salvation.

Frisk:
To search a person for something concealed.
The name for Frisk is odd, but it really makes sense.
If you played the pacifist run, that is exactly what you did. You were revealing monsters' hopes, fears, regrets, loneliness, every little bit about them. By doing this, you discovered the truth, you looked deep beneath their exteriors and the lore of the world to discover beautiful and unique souls.
Despite the unknown that awaited you, despite the dangers, despite the fact that you could die in this "kill or be killed" world... you continued with a smile and a tender heart to these monsters who only ever wanted their freedom. You opened your heart, revealed what you concealed, and they done the same. The monsters became your allies, your friends, your family. You learned about them, and they came to know and love you.

+Zane McCormick Another interesting little tidbit about name choices : Chara, in Irish, literally means "friend". Even the name is contradictory, seeing as the First Human trying to possess you throughout the entire game, tricking you into thinking they're an ally, the only ally needed. The only "friend" you could possibly want. When really all they're after is power. To use *your* power, *your* determination, to destroy everything.
***** The reason Chara doesn't do anything bad to Frisk? Because they died. It's what's left of them that is trying to take your soul's power, their determination for evil. But that's all.
It's not a matter of "letting" you reset, they simply have no other way of manifesting other than pure unadulterated evil. Just like a demon can't be summoned unless all of the "right" criteria are met, the right "ritual", if you will. That isn't a kid, that is a demon.
Chara did a lot worse than that. This is where the assumptions start, but based on the info given, my guess is that Chara wanted to merge with Asriel, or the other way around, to become a being powerful enough to destroy humans, hence their suicide. Only Asriel's will won when their SOULs merged, and refused to attack the humans that attacked him. Chara is the reason Asriel died. Chara knew the sight of his body in a monster's hands would cause them to attack, and they wanted to kill them all. Because they hated humanity, as stated by Asriel. Chara wanted all out war, but they only had one friend, and they used him to try and destroy. Similar to what they attempt to do with Frisk.

“Despite everything, it’s still you.” This quote always strikes me when I see it. It reminds me of all the hardships I’ve been through, and all the experiences that I’ve had. It’s a reminder that I will change, but no matter what, it’ll still be me nonetheless. It’s just life, but it’s a reminder that everything’s gonna be ok, and I will get through life. So whenever I look in the mirror, I will remind myself that like Frisk does in the game.

I'm more concerned about the fact there are 2 Snowdrake's, 3 Dummies and 3 Shyren there, because that shouldn't be the case.
-If Snowdrake dies, Chilldrake will take its place every other battle, meaning there is only one. Same can be seen during your ''Victory Walk'' through Snowdin Forest, where you see the whole family (with Chilldrake just being a friend of Snowy).
-Regular Dummy is only in the ruins, and the only other one is Mad Dummy, who clearly isn't one of these.
-Shyren, like Snowdrake, has more informating, being that they have a family. This is proven by the Amalgamates: Lemon Bread is Shyren's sister and Snowdrake's Mom is...well, Snowdrake's Mom.

It kind of makes sense for it to be the name of the song, though. Think about it, this song plays as you're about to reach the climax of the game, the fight against the king of the monsters. Not to mention it plays as you're getting the games backstory. Why wouldn't you call it Undertale?

When I did a (true) pacifist run I got "It's you!" and then "Despite everything, it's still you." and I just had to lay down for a moment. Still a small detail in the game but it's one that really got to me.

The game's story is straightforward enough you're not confused going through the first time, but the little details really help to add depth as you continue. Like the thrown away recipes in Asgore's house, from him trying to replicate Toriel's cooking after she left him.

i dont expect anyone to see this comment because it'll be buried, but im listening to this after all these years.
it makes me remember the undertale community, the utau amino especially. all the conversations, roleplays, friends, art, mods, inspiration.. it all passed too fast.
i really wish i could go back in time just to tell everyone in that community that i love them deeply, and that i'm proud of them. the amino helped me alot, not just in my confidence, but my art skills, personality, and being open minded. i still laugh about the times where i kept changing my username and nobody would remember me lol
to anyone who has been from undertale aus amino, you guys remember our mods? shadsy, chicky, noicy and etc? remember the events? remember your friends? it was fun indeed. i hope you guys are having a good time right now.

but on another note, nice to see a lot of kind people in the comments. i don’t hate fanmade content, in fact, i think some of it’s really really cool and creative. however, the actual game left an impact on my life and that’s one of the reasons i love it so much. the characters are memorable, the music is awesome, and it was difficult (in the fun way of course).

I just meant they generally don't screw over their customers like the other companies by releasing broken games early for the holidays or flooding their games with overpriced DLC.

It was 2015 when I first played Undertale.
I was 11 years old.
Through my teenage years, this song has somewhat stuck to me like a theme song. I always felt like the whole world was against me and all I had was the game.
When I first played Undertale, I suffered severe depression. Over the years, the diagnosis worsened.
Now its Depression, Anxiety, Autism, and Schizophrenia.
I'm 17 and despite having nobody in my life to stand by me or help me up, I've decided not to end my life because there are people out there who need a hand up.
When I am no longer needed, Ill pass away silently.
Even if Im constantly in pain and cant afford to treat my disorders, I know I could shield a few people from the cruelty I was shown all my life.
And any time I felt like tying the noose, I listened to this song. I remembered how far id come.

I’ve been part of the fandom since it even began, but stayed away from that weird shipping crap, never even stepped a foot into it.

This is the best song of the soundtrack, because of a few things,
1. The raw emotion being given off, because it starts out sounding like there is hope, but then it gets slower, and it gets to the realization that the original human, died, then Asriel wanted to grant the human their wish, but the humans attacked him,
2. The part when the realization of why Asriel isn’t there in the current timeline is because the humans wound up beating him to death, and when he got home, he collapsed, and died, the despair and death of the story is just made even sadder with the music,
3. The hope in the end of the song makes you realize, your journey will end soon, and you have to finish it, cross through the barrier, and go home, the hope of the monsters conveys that realization even more, and you have to kill Asgore to get through the barrier,
And that’s why I love this singular song.
I can imagine the monsters that tell you the story hiding behind walls and practicing their script to tell you a long, emotional story.

First time I found Etika was from his Undertale play though. I know people are having a real hard time dealing with his passing, and it saddens me that it came to that for him. He gave us laughs, over the top reactions, the feels. I feel so sorry for the way people treated him online, not understanding that he needed support and not to be laughed at; he took that pain and kept pushing himself down. But for the most part I'm very happy to see the community come together, not only Etikas but outside groups helping one another. He's in a better place now, and all we can do is carry on the memories and legacy that he blessed us with. Rest in piece Etika, we won't forget you.

The moment you enter New Home, and realise its identical to Toriel's house, accompanied with this music, is one of the most emotionally impacting, and one of the best moments in this game.

Not a single human soul was taken, and countless monsters died.
The rest of the monsters fled underground under MT. EBOTT and were sealed in by the BARRIER.
Only a being with the equivalent of seven human souls could break through the barrier.
Only a being with the equivalent of one human soul and one monster could pass through the barrier.
But this was impossible, as every single monster soul was the equivalent of only one human soul.
So, the monsters were trapped for eternity.
Until...
A long, long time ago...
CHARA hated their life on the surface.
They wanted to die.
So, they jumped down Mt. Ebott.
Yet, they survived.
They were hurt, and called for help.
ASRIEL, the prince of the underground, TORIEL and ASGORE'S son heard them.
They helped them back to the royal palace.
Showing there was still love and compassion in their hearts, the royal family took Chara in as one of their own.
One day, seeing the plight of the monsters, Chara made a plan.
They would commit suicide.
They would give their soul to Asriel.
They would travel to the surface.
They would peacefully gather six more human souls.
They would free everyone.
Monsters would again go free.
But, they failed.
The humans hit Asriel and Chara with everything they had.
Chara, seeing that Asriel was dying, pleaded him to fight back.
But he refused.
And they both died.
They got back to the royal palace.
They collapsed and dusted.
Their dust spread to a single golden flower.
Chara was brought to rest under the flowers on which she had fallen into the underground.
Asgore, enraged, declared all humans would die.
Toriel, disgusted, moved to the RUINS so that no one would ever face Asgore's wrath.
Six more humans fell.
Six more souls were taken.
Until Frisk fell down.
They killed no one. They killed everyone.
Heroes rose up to kill them. Heroes rose up to save their world.
But they failed.
They were befriended. They were killed.
Frisk killed everyone. Frisk befriended everyone.
They reached the surface and lived happily. They faced their actions by Chara.
They RESET.

Video games are almost always stereotyped, and it's obvious to see why (every shooter game ever). But this, this goes beyond entertainment. This is one of the greatest sources for morality. I haven't done the genocide route, and I don't even know what happens. But I do know that i'm satisfied doing True Pacifist over, and over, and over. . . And as for real life, don't kill, and don't be killed :-).

And the original Call of Duty games too, they kind of made you think on the entire subject of this large War that just about the entire world was involved with, twice as a matter of fact.
War is terrible, and it makes you think about how cruel humanity really is when you take a walk through the trenches in world war 1, or landing on the beach at d-day.
World at War is still one of my favorite call of duty games due to how it made me feel. We saw a compelling story about how war changes people, and about the terrible things that people have done to others.
I guess the message is kinda similar to undertale in a way.
Us as humans, can and have done some terrible things, and violence shouldn't really ever be the "obvious answer."

That moment when you realize that this song has been in the game since the intro cinematic and is also a part of Hopes and Dreams. It's literally the first thing you hear in the game and the last thing you hear in the game.
The different parts of this song are repeated along almost all of the soundtrack but with different instruments and tempos. I love Toby Fox.

A year ago, i was sent to a mental hospital far away, by the order of a corrupt doctor who abused her power. I was sent there by mistake after an argument in the emergency room with my mother. I spent so long there. And soon, i got a phone call that the government officials in my hometown recieved a complaint about my behavior, and they came and took away my 8 year old sister without any documents. No warrants, no permission slips, no papers of any kind saying they were allowed to do that. They had basically kidnapped her and sent her to live with my evil, demanding, unreasonable and controlling cousin.
Now, a year after the incident, we've gotten some help, and she's finally coming home. Slowly, within one more weekend visit after this one, she'll be home and she will never have to live a controlled life again.
This song made me think of how far we've come, and gave me a mentality that the goal is in sight, it's just a few more steps and i'll be at the top of the mountain. The more uplifting the music gets the more I can see it coming to life, the more i see it happening, the more i see it cominy true.
And it's because I had faith in God. I was doubting this all before it got fixed. Then when I prayed one day, as meaningful and as hard as i could, from the very abyss of my heart, and my stepfather came and told me the judge ruled in our favor, every shadowy, dark bit of essence in my heart that was corrupt and cursed God was shattered completely, and my faith was once again restored. I didnt think that praying alone could fix anything. But it did. It really did. I didnt know that i could pray like i did that day. And i have God to thank for everything He's doing for me and my family now.

I remember, when I first heard of Undertale, I was completely uninterested. I was kind of turned off by how many people were talking about it and either praising it or hating on it, and as a result it just felt overhyped to me (though I always thought the soundtrack was great!) Then one day, my brother got a copy of it on the Switch, and I watched a bit of it and thought that it actually looked pretty fun, but I still never really could bring myself to playing it. Come a year later, my friends were talking more about it and told me that I really needed to play it. So one day, I finally made up my mind and decided to pop the game in my switch and start playing it...
My god, I’m glad that I did that. What I ended up playing was one of the best games ever created, and it really helped me to get through a really rough patch in my life. This song in particular always seems to bring tears to my eyes because I’ve just come to associate it with the magic I felt when I first played the game, as well as some other truly great moments I experienced both in and outside of the game that brought me some happiness and comfort during that period of my life.
I feel that some people forget that a game’s fandom does not make a game, and even then the entirety of a fandom is not always completely toxic. I forgot that with this game, and if I wouldn’t have finally taken the time to try it out for myself, I would’ve missed out on a great experience that I likely would not have experienced otherwise. Sorry for my essay of a comment, but I just wanted to share my story with this game. I love Undertale, and I hope more people will be able to appreciate it for years to come!

Happy 3rd birthday, Undertale. I may have moved on to other games, but you will always have a special place in my heart. You may be infamous for your terrible fandom, but I looked beyond that, and saw your true beauty. Sometimes, I wish I could return to the time when I had first discovered you. I remember being filled with wonder at what you had to offer. Gameplay, characters, music, secrets, fanworks, and so many more. I remember for so many months, not a single day passed without me thinking of you. I wish I could go back, but that time is now only a Memory. You may not have been the greatest game, and you may not be my favorite game, but you are still good enough for me. The internet may only know you for your fandom, and will attack anyone who even mentions you, but I still love you. And I always will.

I’ll just say this...
Listening to this song, you think of all the choices you made, the monsters you spared, and those you killed. And you think, who is the villain here? The monsters had everything taken from them, they just want it back, Asgore and Toriel lost everything they had... both of their children, in just one night... just one. I don’t know the lore in depth for every part and character of the game, and also, I didn’t play the game much when it was very popular 4 years ago, I wish I was, i really do, I would have had so much fun, but instead I played it around a year ago and got all the endings, now, the community is much more small, some say it is dying out, but I really want to keep it alive as much as I can, just to experience what I really wanted to, but couldn’t, I never have thought more and had a better time with a video game before, listening to this song, especially at the flute part...
It makes me tear up. It really does.

The whole perspective of Undertale's idea of EXP changed me.
It's idea of mercy gave me a whole new perspective of life, and all that live it.
Since I first played it, I lost the ability to hate. I treated everyone with respect, kindness, and love.
Even those that have been cruel to me in the past, I gave them a second chance because I thought they deserved it
It has been years since I first played Undertale.
I haven't felt hate toward another person in those years.
I took any grudges I previously had, and I let them go
Even then though, there are those who will still be mean.
When I met one of those people, I nearly lost it.
But this particular soundtrack helped me remember.
It helped keep me from losing my soul.
And now, those people are some of my closet friends.
I now dedicate every passing second to spreading this inner peace.
Everyone deserves to know it.
Everyone deserves to experience it.
Everyone deserves to have the ability to keep it.
This one game completely changed my soul for the better.
Even when times got tough, I strived to do the right thing.

Undertale really is something special, isn’t it? There are so many emotions in this game, and yet the soundtrack is perfect for all of them. Whether you’re laughing your ass off with Papyrus, dancing your heart out with Metaton, or crying your eyes out with Asriel, the music always fits perfectly. Undertale is a testament to the power of music in games.
This song is truly indicative as to what kind of game Undertale is
It's probably the most emotional and hopeful songs in the game, but you aren't the one hopeful...
This is actually one of the most gloomy parts of the game for you... But not for the monsters, after all they're about to be free, it makes you stop and think about how you've affected all the others. for just a split second, you forget all your worries and you too, feel hopeful for them,
This song itself, having the huge leitmotif of his theme, makes you feel like this is a song that monsters him to their children every night, as if asriels spirit lives on through them (forgetting flowey)
To them, even if you weren't a bad guy, the "bad guy" is about to be defeated, they can finally leave.
What I'm trying to say is, it's beautiful that undertale's most impactful song is a song about rooting for the enemy, even if it means your own death

My personal story with Undertale isn't a sob story. I wasn't necesarrily depressed, or stressed, or suffering. Not to invalidate people who went through those experiences and found hope with this game, it's just that it wasn't the same boat I was on when I found this game.
It was a part of me in middle school. I'm only 15 now but a lot has changed since I found this game when I was 12. Middle school isn't pretty, but at that age, if you find something you love, you /really/ love it. It was the first time I ever felt such passion and unconditional love for a game. It was for good reason, I loved the characters, the message, the consequence of your actions, the mysterious lore, you name it. I got my first real best friend through this game (we memed the shit out of it). Hell I even fell in love with someone and the first time she talked to me, we were talking about this game. I wouldn't consider myself obsessed with Undertale then, but man did it make me happy. It was one of the only pure and joyful things I had for a very long time. I wish I could express how much this game holds a special place inside my heart now.
What I'm trying to say is that you need to hold on to that 12 year old version of you that just wants to have fun. People go off about the "cringey fandom" this game has. If they were anything like me, they were just passionate and bonding over this game. As long as it's not hurting anyone, you shouldn't look down upon it so much. Let kids have fun. Let teens have fun. Let adults have fun. Undertale is a message about love and compassion, so share it.
That’s a wonderful message! I think nowadays people try to stay away from certain games because of the fandoms. But if they just think and realize that the games don’t suddenly become bad just because of the fandom. The game can still be good. Undertale is good. Undertale is a fun game to play. Undertale has a narrative that is great. This story cannot be told with a book or a movie. It is exclusively a video game story. One might say that the story and gameplay are one. They go hand-in-hand to the point where depending on who you kill and/or don’t kill and who you hang out with, you’ll get a different ending. There’s many different endings. The neutral endings are the most diverse. Some are hopeful, some are a tad disturbing, some are just depressing, and one is funny. The genocide ending can be a little bit scary, given a certain soulless human. The True Pacifist Ending is my personal favorite ending. It has the perfect closure. It’s what the monsters wanted all along. Undertale is filled with charming moments. The hangouts, the dogs, Temmie, and Sans are all good examples of this. Undertale is more than just a good game. It is an unforgettable experience. An experience that is unforgettable for all the right reasons. A fandom that exists outside the game isn’t going to ruin that, is it? Especially when the fandom brought some good things. Fanart, parodies (If Undertale Was Realistic is a good watch), memes, vine compilations, and it inspired some fan projects. At the end of the day, a few bad eggs in the fanbase isn’t going to ruin a game that has little to do with its fandom.

The royal family had a major problem with the human and I'm just here thinking about my future. This... song.... It literally almost makes me cry.
