The reason why Toriel’s theme plays during Asgore’s theme, and Asgore’s theme doesn’t play during Toriel’s theme, is because Toriel is still apart of Asgore’s life, but Toriel wants nothing to do with him. Poor Asgore :(
aww :(((
i feel bad for Asgore but i feel bad for Toriel too
"apart" and "a part" have very different meanings, look them up.
@@simpson6700 dude.. dont nitpick it

the best part about this song is that it isn’t some big intense battle song, asgore didn’t need to show off his power, or be intimidating, you were preparing for this fight the whole game only to see that he wasn’t some big scary monster king, he was just a scared father and leader desperate to save his kingdom :(

Asgore destroyed the mercy button because he knew his name would be yellow right away...
Not quite. He destroyed it *because he didn't want mercy for his actions.*
+Geometry Dash LOL1982 Or because he thought that mercy would get them nowhere.
Without the last human Soul The barrier wouldn't break and without a monster soul Frisk can't get through either effectively putting them in stalemate.
Personally, I think it's either because he means you'll have no mercy, or he doesn't deserve mercy for the things he's done, and what he's doing. In fact, during a certain neutral run, after you kill Flowey in the first one, the next one, Asgore literally kills himself...
+Video Game Music OH GOD WHAT?
+Video Game Music Spoilers:
It is because after what happened with the human souls, he thinks he doesn't deserve mercy. If you killed Flowey at the end of Neutral run and fight Asgore again without becoming friends with Alphys and doing True Labs, he talks about adopting Frisk and being a family with Toriel, before dismissing it as a fantasy and kills himself to let Frisk leave the underground (before Flowey shows up and destroys it).
I just noticed something whenever Toriel mentions Asgore, his name is always displayed in red but when someone else mentions him his name is in yellow. Didn't expect her to hate him that much
I mean, knowing Toriel's nature, she was probably shocked when, after the death of their two kids, Asgore let his emotions get the better of him and flat out declare WAR. While others didn't know Asgore as well they saw this as a chance of hope. Meanwhile Toriel saw that Asgore went too far from the sweet man she used to know him as and left him. When Asgore sees that his actions have also cost him his wife, he realized he had nothing left but had to be a symbol of hope for his kind, thus still on the warpath, albeit VERY reluctantly. He couldn't even bring himself to do it himself cause when he calmed down, he realized he didn't want this. His wife didn't want this. His kids wouldn't have wanted it. But it's too late to turn back now, lest his kind loses faith.
Undyne Say Asgore in red but dreemmur yellow
@@nobgs4505 Maybe no one ever wanted it but when your kid dies due to a 'misunderstanding', I think his anger is pretty justified. I always felt bad for him during his boss fight in the neutral run. Whenever you hit him, he doesn't budge at all as if he's expecting you to hurt him and that he deserves all the hate and scorn that Toriel throws at him :(
Undertale seems very asian when it comes to it's culture. In Asia, writing ones name in red is desplayed as a sign of death, or wanting one to be dead. And I am pretty sure yellow means you see the individual with respect.
Not only that, she calls him _'The_ Asgore' as if he was some sort of demonic being.
When you first approach Asgore, he looks so shocked. Undyne must have done most of the work gathering the human souls. She knows he's just a wimp with a big heart, despite his strength.
He never expected you to come through there and never wanted you to. Easiest for him was to have another nameless human to lay to rest.
Not have to talk to them, not have to learn who they are or what they want. Another poor unknown soul.
But then you come into his garden and he has to face reality. He can't keep on with his wait-and-see plan for gathering the souls anymore.
Even knowing that, he still is nothing but nice and polite. Downright friendly. He tries to comfort you. He genuinely cares about you, despite what he will have to do.
No challenge, though. No rush to action. Your coming to the barrier is an eventuality and he doesn't want you to feel unhappy about reaching the end.
You're free to go back and take care of whatever business you need to, you can come and go at any time. Only once you're ready does he accept what must be done, but it is with a heart much heavier than his spear, heavier than he can bear.
He can't even look you in the eyes as he attacks.
+SegmentedHero As good as it sounds...explain to me the coffin withy your name on it right before his throne room?
+Der Translationist I think that is either Flowey's doing or Asgore just preparing for the inevitable.
I...highly doubt Flowey can build coffins, nor know Protagonist's name. As for Asgore, well, he must knew the protagonis at least so much to know his name, or else, the name couldnt be on the coffin. And I think the protagonist never tells the name to anyone...so...Either Asgore already is a god-like being, knowing everything and only held back knowing whats coming, or he is good at guessing. :b
+SegmentedHero I have to correct myself: I completely forgot that you actually dont choose your characters name at the beginning. Thats Frisk, no matter what. You actually choose Charas name, the human who fell down first. So I guess the coffin gets a pass. :b
he is surprised mostly because she made it there by herself, and that he REALLY doesn't wanna kill anyone else.
Asgore be like.
Pacifist: One of us must die.
Genocide: Want some tea?
@Lyfull THAT RUN.
He is very, very scared of dying by you in Genocide, so he is just tying to be nice to stay alive. He knows he'll die if he fights, so he uses the only other option he has... Which didn't work.
Andres Avila no one genocide he doesn’t wanna kill someone of his same species as he sees you as a monster

Not-so fun fact: in Undertale, Undyne tells the player that during a spar, Asgore dodged all her attacks.
This means Asgore lets you stab him with a dull knife...
So in retrospect, Asgore didn't break the Mercy option so that you cannot run away... He destroyed it because he feels like he doesn't deserve your Mercy.
The idea of big, bulky Asgore dodging Undyne's bullet hell attacks is hilarious to me.
@@CalamitasBrimstoneWitchthe idea of little child who can evade magic attacks he seen first time is a little strange
@@Nethershad Well yeah, but you can't tell me a giant goat dude dodging is less funny.
@@CalamitasBrimstoneWitch but Undine never attacks with her spear. She always use magic. And besides, she can not evade or block Frisk attacks. She really CANT react to it. The reason Asgore destroys the mercy button at the start of the fight is not because he wants to fight a kid, it's because he feels he doesn't deserve mercy after everything he's done. :(
+kylezaking And of course, Asgore knows that if the kid used mercy, he couldn't bring himself to continue fighting.
+kylezaking Explains why once he starts fighting he stops looking you in the eyes. His whole fighting stance has him looking down at his feet.
+Thagyr Though his fighting stance is either depicted like you described or a sadistic smile across his face
+Sinning .png It can't be a smile. Notice how below the "grin" there is another spot of white. THAT is his mouth area.
+Rivibaes Agreed. Talking to him visibly shakes his determination. If the kid used Mercy, Asgore wouldn't be able to lift a finger anymore.

Even when he kills you he can't let you give up.
+Willo Wisp
It becomes really strange if you do a Genocide/almost Genocide Run and he's still telling you to stay determined.
+metaXzero It's just memories being fed to you by Flowey to keep you going.
+metaXzero because he isn't talking to frisk, he is talking to the fallen human (the one you name).
it's a memory of some sort, of asgore talking to the fallen human (the one you name), not frisk. asgore only met frisk in the end.
Demonsul
Flowey turns against you right before you fight Sans. Yet you still get Asgore talking (outside spare death).
lemonw
In a Genocide Run, you are basically the Fallen Human. Flowey is even convinced of that.
Fun fact: If you die to Asgore a few times, the dialogue actually changes when you try to talk to him. After dying to Asgore once, you will tell him that he killed you before. Asgore will reply by nodding sadly. After dying more times to him, Asgore will react slightly different by nodding grieveously and nodding pitifully respecively.
I'm still confused why he believes it when previous saves only give familiarity, which is an exception to flowey, the lone fact that asgore believed her means that he must've met with flowey, which flowey said in the genocide route.
Yeah that’s something I always felt like gets over looked. Like, How would Asgore realistically KNOW he’s killed you before?
The thing is, there were 6 other humans down there before you... he's killed most of them. He's probably heard some of them say it before, and given the whole timeline-shifting thing is known by Sans, and he's heavily implied to have worked with Alphys, it's not too hard to believe that Alphys has told Asgore about it.

Fun Fact:
"Entrückung" is german and means the religious concept of passing into an afterlife after death. "Berg" means mountain.
"Bergentrückung" is a rather old believe in different germanic and nordic religions that heroes or kings, when they die, pass into a mountain. Ready to come back and save the people when the time is right.
Wasn't there also a German fairytale, about a broken king who was sealed underground for nearly a century or two, only to be released so that he may fight a wicked evil?
... If so, Asgore and his theme could have drawn direct inspiration from that very tale.
Well, this even works with Frisk's slight backstory. A human trying to commit suicide by climbing up Mt Ebott.
@@helohel5915 Well, it's Chara who we see in the intro and who Asriel says climbed the mountain for "not a very happy reason"
"Ent" basically means "away from something/ opposed to something"
"(etwas) rücken" is a verb and means to move/ push something, for example Furniture.
So Bergentrückung very literally describes something being moved/ passed into a Mountain from another place where it was before.
Wow. I'm german and I always read it as "Bergen-Trückung" instead of "Berg-Entrückung". Wow. And I was so confused 😂😂

Toriel: You can spare every monster.

Well, after lowering his life you can spare him so he is sparable.
@The one who started world war 2 He's still spared, though.
Unless you do something called “true pacifist”
But actually yes
Asgore: Well, yes, but actually-OW!
Toriel: YOU CAN SPARE EVERY MONSTER!!!!!!
Out of all the characters in this game, Asgore gets the most respect from me. Poor dude lost his own son and adopted child. His wife left him. His people aren’t free. Yet his theme tells you that he’s still full of hope, to live good days again. By not counting Undyne, this man possibly has the most determination.
Sans has very little determination. Dude's depressed. When you finally kill him, he just accepts his fate, rather than attempting to defy it.

This guy caught me completely off-guard. They foreshadow him throughout the entire game, implying that he's way too powerful for anyone to defeat. Then when you walk towards him after Mettaton, there's a bunch of yellow flowers. "Gee, I sure do wonder who the boss is..."
Then I saw him.
It was just a regular dude. Not a mighty beast. Not Flowey under a different name. Not a cruel ruler. Just someone who wanted to give his people hope. He wished you would never show up so he wouldn't have to fight you.
I didn't want to fight him either...
...but there was nothing to talk about.
+HotShot888 They also build him up to be a giant push over. It's a weird clash of character. Half the cast is saying he will kill you and the other half is calling him fluffybuns.
Honestly he was everything I thought he was. A gentle leader who had the power to fight but didn't want to... just like the character in a pacifist run.
+projackX People knew he was a pushover, because he could never harm someone. Its why he never looks at you during the fight. Undyne wanted to be the greatest fighter so that Asgore never would have to fight. People respected him, even with his faults.
+HotShot888
"They foreshadow him throughout the entire game, implying that he's way too powerful for anyone to defeat"
They also foreshadowed, and by foreshadowed I mean explicitly stated numerous times, that he's a peaceful, kindhearted, warm fellow.
+HotShot888 Before playing the game, I saw fanart of what I now know is omega flowey. I thought with the name ASGORE, when Toriel said, "They, ASGORE" I thought that that would be some computer monster organization because of how omega flowey looked.

What still sticks with me is how, if it's your first run and you're playing pacifist, you'll get here and _have no idea how to fight._
You might have seen the fight bar once like eight hours ago. You don't know how the timing works. You might even still be waving around a damn stick. Your physical relationship with the game suddenly aligns with your narrative relationship with Asgore, and your helplessness as a player flows back to emphasize just how utterly overwhelming and unfair this is. You're just some innocent kid, being forced to fight the King of Monsters.
You feel it mechanically. He feels it, too.
It's an incredible piece of game design, anticipating the player's experience (or lack thereof) and using it to amplify a tragedy in a totally natural and organic way. For my money, it's the best fight in the game and one of the best designed boss battles of all time.
True. I have seen a good amount of people stuggle with their decisionmaking because they expected everything being able to be solved through pacifism, but we suddenly have two fights (Asgore and Flowey) that can only be solved through using the fight button.

Sometimes I think this is better than Megalovania.
I was gonna say the same thing!
+J Lo kind of a concept thing i think. Megalovania is more of a boss song where you are pumped up and ready to fight. Asgore is a song where you're very reluctant to fight, and the song shows that. You shouldn't be fighting and you are. There's regret on both sides. Thus, this song is better cause of it's deep meaning and Megalovania can be better because of it's empowering feel.

The demise of a fews to save the many.
A truly good king is a terrifying thing.
Technically it wasn't a few, it was more than he needed to. He could've stopped at the soul of the first child and went to the surface, gathered the rest from humans who were truly wicked, and then broke the barrier. Instead he tried to wait for all 7 to fall down, which was slow and lead to more innocent deaths.
+Zedrin only because he was afraid, he didn't want war, just hope to the monsters. that's why he always hoped humans will never come down again, becoming even more miserable with every human coming down.
I'd say he was more mentally weak than a good ruler, and that's what made him dangerous--his lack of a decisiveness. He was kind hearted, but his intentions were misguided and miscalculated.
He was scary due to ignorance, not benevolence.

Asgore, despite my love for Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, and everyone else from the Undertale cast, will always remain as my favorite character. A broken man who has lost everything dear to him and driven to do horrible things for the sake of his people. He is a hollow shell of his former self, so worn with such self loathing and depression for so many years that he believes himself to be unfit for Mercy of any kind. The man has gone through so much, all of which he does not deserve a single bit of, and has done things that are absolutely heartbreaking to think about when you consider just how gentle and kind-hearted he truly is.
"Bergentrückung" means "mountain king"... Asgore is king under Mt. Ebott, so Asgore is the mountain king... you fight Sans in a hall in Asgore's place... conclusion: you fight Sans... *in the hall of the mountain king*.

600th like exact!
Interestingly, Bergentrückung means three things: "King in the Mountain", referring to Asgore, "Mountain Rapture", referring to Asgore giving the monsters hope, or rapture could be about the ascension to Heaven in Christian belief, the analogy being Asgore leading them from the underground to the surface, rather than going to Heaven from Earth. Finally, Bergentrückung is also a story trope where the hero lays dormant until needed to save the day in some way. Asgore does nothing throughout Undertale, and essentially "wakes up" by making an appearance to kill you and give the monsters rapture.
Thus, the Bergentrückung brings Bergentrückung via Bergentrückung.
Dude holy shit what are you smoking i want some
The government probably dosed me with LSD. Fun fact: they did that around the 50's-70's, and when someone sued them because they committed a crime allegedly because the CIA dosed him, the CIA's argument was: "We DID dose civilians with LSD without consent, but you have no proof that we dosed YOU." These experiments went on for, like, 20 years and only stopped because they determined that LSD wasn't good for torture.
So they started making their own drug for torture. They SAID they aren't doing experiments like this anymore, but why the FUCK should we believe them.

+Chao's Playmate Gaming no, that's him saying it to Chara the Fallen child.
Bergentrückung is the German word for the “King in the Mountain” trope, which describes a king or hero that was rumored to have died but will return to save their people, like King Arthur. Asgore is an interesting twist on this because while he is literally a king under a mountain, he’s still doing the waiting, and he has to kill the protagonist to save his people.
So many people here have a different translation of the word
@@inaminorkey IIRC the *literal* translation is "Mountain Rapture", but the trope it refers to is called "King in the Mountain" in English.
Fun fact: Bergentrückung means excavation in German, and Asgore's last name, Dreemurr, is an anagram for murderer. "Ungern (Which is probably something i dont know an anagram for in the game) so in short, his name is could be "reluctant murderer". It also means "King asleep in a mountain".

I always saw him destroying your Mercy button as a way of making it so you can't run away and also actually fight back so he doesn't feel as bad.
But when I got my Mom to play the game (she really enjoyed it if your wondering) she got to this point and said something along the lines of "Oh... that's awful. He thinks he doesn't deserve to be spared" And I have to thank her for coming up with a much better conclusion than I did
I think it's a bit of both in my opinion
I started to get my mom to play the game to and she isn't interested by video games, and even SHE liked it.
I dont think anyone doesnt like undertale.
I think it’s more of a “it’s just not an option” and him destroying it is more symbolism. And bringing him to his knees forces a dialogue between the 2 of you which ends in him realising sparing is an option, but it’s definitely a mercy, and humiliation, which is why it’s crumbly.

Loading your file is actually going back in time. That's in fact the only way to get into Sans' room. So when you finish that first run of the game and beat flowey, regardless of you killing Asgore or not, you have the option to load your last save file, effectively going back in time one last time to get the true ending by doing things right. But only if certain conditions are met. If not, your only option for that ending would be to go back in time all the way to the beginning by reseting the save file.

I often hear people saying this song is better than Megalovania, but in my opinion, they shouldn't even be compared in the first place.
I don't think either is better or worse, because they have completely different feels to them.
In Asgore's theme, there's a sense of uncertainty, and the feeling that nothing is as it should. Here, we have two individuals striving for peace, but their circumstances force them to fight anyway. Asgore wants to have tea and talk, but feels he must put his kingdoms freedom first. The human just wants to leave the underground, but is forced to fight for their survival.
Meanwhile, in Megalovania, while the song is very intense, there's also a noticeable sense of inevitable futility, especially during the longer sections of the track. Sans isn't trying to defeat the human, he's trying to outlast them. No matter how Sans kills them, nor how many times he succeeds, they can always come back and try again. Sans is seemingly aware of this fact, and knows it's only a matter of time before he's killed, and the world is destroyed.

I know Asgore did horrible things and that many hate him for it, for me he is one of my favorite characters in the whole game with Papyrus, I can only feel respect for breaking the mercy button, because he knows that he does not deserve mercy, he has taken a path in which he believes he can help his people, but the weight of his actions is too much to the point that he cannot even look you in the face when you fight him, attacking you blindly because he does not want to see what he is going to do... that shit is deep.
It reminds me of the moment when the Joker tells Batman in the killing joke that he does not deserve help because he has already gone too far in his madness and there is no turning back, there is no mercy for that, he does not deserve it.
@Cyrus Patrick Cruz I mean, is undertale, all the characters are great, but my favorites are Asgore and Papyrus, I would also include Undyne because she is so hilarious and Metatton because he is unexpected, but see? If I continue like this, I will mention every character xD

nearly 8 years later and this track, and many others in the undertale OST STILL give me goosebumps. thats good sound design,
wow already 2023 the years go by fast
Bar none, my favorite track in the entire game. The composition is incredibly well done, expressing the pain and sorrow Asgore has to go through because of what he believes is right for his people, yet he knows what he is doing is despicable and immoral.
It hurts me when I see people give him so much flak for being an "underdeveloped" character. Yeah, he doesn't appear until near the end of the game, but he's a lot more developed than people seem to think.
+Dictator Heartless Asgore is the best. Ever since Toriel warned us (the player) about Asgore I got intimidated and throughout the whole story you got to hear small pieces of Asgore. Then you finally get to face off against him and you have no idea how he looks like. Got pretty epic when you finally did meet him the first time though.
Yes, Asgore is a conflicted character and only does the thing he thinks is right and best for his people and give them hope.
+CommandoSoldier It wasn't the right thing though.
Oh sure, monsters were, Bratty and Catty for example, "so hyped for the destruction of humanity" but it wouldn't be a lasting hope.
Look, they were supporting war. They were supporting monsters dying, when there's still the option of no one dying and peace being there as Frisk has.
I completely agree
+Austin Lucas
"They were supporting monsters dying"
Considering the monsters would've had a god on their side...
It would've been less of a war, and more of a slaughter.
Every person that says he's undeveloped is a big idiot.
Asgore only shows up at the end, because your journey is finally over, you get to meet the king, and finally you get to see his pain. The reason he is so "Undeveloped" is because the game is saving the best thing for last. It's saving Asgore for last, because he's not a normal character he's a king. The game is saving your most treacherous and hard adventure LAST, which, if you ask me, is great writing.
2:07 is my favorite part. It just reflects Asgore's hidden sorrow and grief.
