I like ur video. I’m an avid fisherman but don’t live near the water so I don’t surf fish too much. When I go, I tend to always catch fish but I use a fresh water rod and 10 pound line. I find that that is sufficient to catch Whiting close to the shore
@@SaltSquatch I have a freshwater real call the day off we go but because it’s sealed, it’s held up amazingly well. I have dumped it under water multiple times in the beach and still works good.
I have a custom built cart, but you want to find an aluminum cart with the poly tires. Fish N Mate is probably the most common one on the market. You can often find a good pier cart on marketplace that you can buy surf tires for and replace.
@@SaltSquatch watch on Facebook and Craigslist. You can getbsome great deal on carts, coolers, etc.. also when the snowbirds are leaving they sell alot of that stuff.
I use an 8 foot rod for the pier, and a 9 foot for the beach. Don't really like longer than 9 feet. The longer the rod, the more energy you have to put in the cast. If I wanna cast further, I just walk in the water up to my knees or waist. As far as reels, I have a couple of tsunami barrier spinning reels. 50 bucks a piece. They have 7 internal seals. Can handle the salt. The 2 things I absolutely hate, are treble hooks, and braided line. And I only fish lures. Don't like bait either. It gets messy and expensive.
Thanks. Phil I fish the East Coast of Florida for pompano,Black Drum,Whiting . I’m looking for a new rod. I’ve used a St Croix Mojo 11 ft. One is matched with a Cabo 60 and another with a Van Staal VSX 250. Plus I have a 13 ft Florida Surf Angler matched with an Akios conventional. So I like quality. You mentioned the 12 ft TFO. How does that compare to a rod like the Mojo? Is that rod too heavy for pompanos?
@@SaltSquatch thanks. I just have never seen one in the shops around Jacksonville or St Augustine. I’ve been looking at the St Croix Avid and the Daiwa TDA. But I do like the TFO rods I have( Fly rod). Great information on your site. It’s really appreciated. The consumer needs advice because of so many choices. When I started this journey into Surf Fishing 45 years ago at 16 I bought a Penn Greenie 706 and an Abu Garcia fiberglass 9 1/2 ( 4 Star Rod). A lot has changed. Sometimes I think we have too many selections. Fifty years ago it was a Penn Greenie, Mitchell 302,402,etc.,and that was about it.
Damn I can't wait to get my 12' tfo. I'm pairing it with a 14000 shimano speedmaster xsc 'big pit' from Europe. 44lb of drag and a gorgeous blue spool. (I'm a tackle whore) it has to look cool! Tight lines brother

@@AdventureswithaaronB that’s impressive! Saltwater is rough on everything, so the fact it’s still holding up is pretty awesome
Another great video! Nice work...
Thanks, Smitty! I see you’re out there killin it!
Great Video Phil!! Tons of great advice to get started!!🐠🐠🦀🦀

To each their own! Thanks for sharing your tackle preferences
will a 4000 or 5000 cast further on a 11 foot rod?
TFO is 🔥🔥🔥
My favorite rod I’ve used so far
@@SaltSquatch have you tried carolina cast pro? Might pick up some of his blanks and build a few if I can't find any blanks at MudHole I like.

Hey I keep breaking 25lb braid with casting any tips
Add a 50 to 80lbs 3,5m braided leader with an FG knot ,problem solved

The 12’ TFO is awesome for Pompano because it has a backbone to hurl some lead, but a fast action tip so you can see subtle bites.

There are a TON of options on the market nowadays! Nice to have choices, but also creates buyer paralysis.
@@SaltSquatch exactly. I have a tendency to overthink. But I do find that quality matters. For the most part you get what you pay for.
100%…and you can get away with cheap rods/reels if you only fish occasionally.
You should work for Amazon #1 spokesperson
