I personally think most couples do it cause one is bored out of their mind and wants to cheat or they have a much higher libido than their partner so they're feeling unfulfilled in the relationship so the other suggests an open relationship. I personally believe it's done out of insecurity and desperation to keep the person around in any way shape or form. It's rare that both people actually want to be with another person besides the person they're already with.
Its a recipe for disaster, very few people are wired for it. Majority are not. Run a mile if you come across this lot....it will bring a lot of destruction to your life.
Boy does opening the relationship cause some mental trauma. I seen it happen all the time. The number one reason polymory couple end up in therapy is because of jealousy. There is no way you can completely treat two plus people fairly. One will always win out more and that new love energy can last for 2 years or worst the other relationship is way more compatible and then u go lower on the priority list. They require twice as many rules and meetings to make it somewhat work. All that part time and spreading yourself thin is choas to get an "ok" relationship. And then the poor children get invalidated because they suffer in this dynamic. It makes for unstable children to unstable adults. I always say "just stay a Dora the explorer, if commitment makes you feel yucky." These unicorn hunting couples use the unicorns and then discard them.. they are basically a fuck boy & fuck girl couple. Double breakups are scary.
