Remember growing up, spending time with my mom Sunday evenings planning her outfits for the week. Sowing on buttons, checking seams, cleaning and polishing shoes, choosing accessories as her job was in the public sphere and also had evening events. Nostalgic fond memories and I learned such a lot from her. My mom is 79 and still stylish, quirky and very organised.
My choice is easy as last year I deliberately decided to only have two types of "outfits" in my Everyday Wardrobe - a dress, or a feminine top plus denim/navy bottoms. Choosing one plain neutral colour for all my bottoms has been a game changer. For laundry reasons, I also decided to have 7 outfits each season, one for each day of the week. My core shoes are black or navy. If anyone thinks this is all a bit boring, I have a few budget friendly ways to add spice and newness to my look - eg, each season, a new nail varnish or lipstick colour, a new body spray, a new way of styling my hair, a new scarf for my coat or a new everyday necklace. I also have a Formal Social Wardrobe with two outfits, one for a funeral, one for a wedding. Sadly the funeral outfit gets worn more.
The easiest way to have a wardrobe you love is to prioritize those items you LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! Wear them a lot! Meanwhile, let go of anything so-so. (Why wear less-than?) A small, well-curated wardrobe ensures that you look good/feel good 100% of the time. Why settle for anything less?
In middle school I used to theme my outfits every single day…hippie day, cowgirls day, neon day 😂. And it was so much fun. Somewhere between my 3rd and 5th kid getting dressed lost it’s luster and every thing became supremely functional. My youngest is now in school and the joy of dressing is coming back…although not to the full on neon themes 😂 But I turn on French music and do a pretty winged eyeliner, red lip, and trench coat, wide legged trousers and a delicate little jumper and it makes me feel like I can take on the world! My mama used to say her work clothes were her armor and when she was dressed for work she was invincible! Thank you for bringing those memories back and reminding us that getting dressed can be fun!
Enjoyed your walk down memory lane. My mom's passion for fashion certainly had a big impact on my own style development. Her preferences for dresses & skirts certainly stuck with me. As did her her habit of being matchy-match, monochromatic, & focused on column dressing ↕️. Both extreme hourglasses⏳️. She was a 'pocket venus', while I was an amazon in comparison. Our having a long torso & low waist, meant having to use tricks to fool the eye into believing our legs were longer than reality🤣. She was always considerably more flamboyant & glamorous. My tom-boyish, grunge, & sporty side used to drive her crazy. She could tolerate my more ultra girlish inclinations like country, boho, & goth bcos of their extreme femininity. Although she approved more of my preppy, academia, & corporate leanings. Always impressed by ppl that have a distinctive & consistent style like Alyssa. Unfortunately, my tastes still run far too eclectic😖. 🤔May borrow your idea of dress themes to create workable fashion formulas to make my own selection process more sassy, streamline, & satisfying. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
This is soooo great. I wish you could do this with a larger size woman. Because honestly, looking at you, everything looks great on you. Me, trial and error takes about 100% longer. And yes you are right, planning out is game changer!
Well that's also because she's bought clothes that look good on her, right? I'm not saying it's not difficult as a larger size, but if you hold onto clothes that don't fit or flatter you well, then of course it's going to be harder out of the gate. It's taken a few years to get my wardrobe to where it is now, but I now have enough choices that I can finally pass on the clothes that bind/ pinch/ ride up/ are generally uncomfortable on my current body. That makes it much easier to then put together looks that I know won't make me feel bad about how I look.
I have my stepdaughter's wedding in August. My outfit is already put together and hanging in the closest with a purse and shoes. I even had a strapless dress altered into a skirt to wear with a blouse and denim jacket. I would have never done this before watching your videos. I even took a picture of the whole outfit put together to keep on my phone.
Taking pictures is such a great idea, I’ve never thought of doing that before, but then all I ever wear really is work clothes for construction. I have never planned ahead as far as outfits go, so trying to now with a trip coming up. Alyssa’s videos have helped so much towards taking a planned approach to dressing! Have a fabulous time at the wedding!
I need to find a way to say "enough is enough!" I am recently retired so I don't have to worry about time constraints. I have refreshed my wardrobe over the past few years after I discovered the UA-cam fashion influencers. I am so glad I discovered your channel about 6 months ago. Your videos and clothing philosophy has helped me focus on becoming more sustainable in my fabric choices and trying to work with what I already have. However, I sometimes find it hard to resist the sales that my favorite go-to stores offer. Perhaps I will give Open Wardrobe a try. Thank you for your inspiration.
This is very timely for me. I have spent 35 years in construction, operating heavy equipment as well as house building/painting, so my wardrobe has been steel toe boots, hi vis, and paint covered clothing. I’m very much a homebody so my “nice” clothes are very few and not at all thought out. I have recently semi retired and also have a trip coming up so decided to start dressing better. I had no idea how much work it is! 😳 I love the idea of having a few good pieces that work together, so loving your videos. Since I had pretty much nothing to start with I have had to shop, trying to thrift as much as possible, but am kinda baffled about what I do, and don’t, need. I’m finding playing around trying various pieces together extremely helpful so thank you for your wonderful videos, I feel that I am starting to grasp what works on me. Having the pieces out that I am trying to put together as a capsule for my trip 3 weeks ahead might get me through this without a meltdown 😆 (I can see why I didn’t do this while working full time, self employed so full time means 7 days a week, this is like another job🤣)
Hi Jill, also check out Justine Leconte too, she is a ethical slow fashion - fashion designer who creates capsule wardrobes. She also does makeup too. I started watching her on Utube about 3 years ago (when I was 59) and have changed the way I shop and how I now wear clothes. Plus she is fun.
I go back through my Pinterest boards. I’m rarely on that app anymore, but I’ve pinned so many outfit combos to try. Sometimes looking for inspo there reminds me that the clothes I already have are more versatile than I give them credit for.
I plan my weekly wardrobe on Sundays based on weather and what’s on my calendar. It’s helped me continue my no buy plan for 2023 for another month. I made it through Q1 and had so much fun shopping my closet. Your channel has been so valuable over the past 2 years. I finally enjoy getting dressed and putting outfits together.
I do this too! It really saves time in the mornings, doesn't take that long (I use an app) and makes me use my clothing more comprehensively. Congrats on being able to extend your no buy!
Same here, I have it all hanging up on the back of my door! I find it's much easier to add/ switch out specific pieces if the weather isn't cooperating that morning, rather than having to start from scratch each time. That said, I'm not on a no-buy diet- doing the switch out each morning has helped me to instead hone in on what I actually *need* for future purchases (rather than buying frivolously, I know my upcoming purchases are based on actual wardrobe holes when getting dressed lol).
Alyssa, I absolutely admire your creativity. I hope you know how amazing you're!! Just when I think there's no way you can come up with something new, you drop this.
I have open wardrobe but I haven’t done anything with it yet as I have sooooo many clothes to snap! I’m 60 so I have years worth of outfits as I haven’t really changed size that much. It is overwhelming but I recently bought a wee rail to plan capsules for weekends away and holidays and I’m finding it really useful. X
The idea of having parts of your wardrobe visible, helped me very much for all the time, I remember and gives me this playfulness to creating another (not always exiting NEW!) outfit of the next day(s). Yes, I can wear something for several days, if it doesn't smell or got stained. Since my closet would be overwhelming with ALL the clothes, I own and have accumulated over the past many years and which I can wear, because my figure stayed the same - except for pregnancies, I love to divide my "treasures", give some of the clothes a needed rest, stash them away. I decide then on certain colors and coordinate the garments within this color range (right now it is a light gray, dark blue, emerald(ish), purple(ish) and mustard... And white and denim as a "of course". Belts, scarfs, coats, shoes and other accessories matching. This way I have reduced the choices, but at the same time it helps me to mix and match in minutes... And months later, when I have mixed and matched excessively, I change the color scheme and voila, there are new choices and lots of fun for the following next months. Very inexpensive method!!! 😅
I go to a lot of dance events (3-10 day holidays with dance workshops, sightseeing, etc.). I preplan all my outfits according to the activities in a way that I would have some mix and match options as well. That is very useful and limits the stress of choosing/packing
I love the idea of a clothes rail for special occasions and letting your subconscious decide what to wear. Unbeknown to me I have used this before and it has been very successful
I love Open Wardrobe, so glad I’ve digitised my wardrobe! It really makes creating outfits and packing lists so easy. I also love that you can upload items to a Wish List and upload pictures of your looks. Great app 💙💙💙
😊Yes, I'm thankful for being a maximalista. I refuse to be shamed about it. I have more regrets over some of the garments I donated out of peer pressure🤣. It's so hard to find things that suit my figure, picky preferences, color palette, & lifestyle. It just seems wiser to keep things in the long run. Although now I am starting to upcycle (or alter) some items in order to make them feel more current. Brushing up on my sewing skills. 🤔Having gone up & down in size, it's served me well to keep my clothing over the decades. Thrilled I fit in the smaller garments now, & maintained it for well over a year. It's like having a whole new wardrobe open up again🎉! 😘Alyssa has helped me see the value of creating seasonal capsules, so I can rotate things in & out as trends come & go 🔄. Like a closet curator, it keeps things fresh & current. It does get dull if you use the same few pieces over & over again😔. I like that she challenges us to shop our closets, & mentors us on how to evaluate inspiration looks so they work for us. Experimenting with my clothes has become quite enjoyable! 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
CIAO Alyssa, currently we are really entering spring, so still figure out jacket's for the everyday climate @ California. Still we having climate changes and wear sweaters for evenings. Still figure watch to carry this evening, without feeling like a new in the trend quest 😂
Open Wardrobe is PERFECT for travel capsules! It’s so helpful to plan not only the pieces I’ll pack, but also the outfits I can make out of them. Comes in clutch!!
Thanks for this content, Alyssa! I have a lot of clothes, shoes, and accessories...A LOT!! I do enjoy my things! 😊 Sometimes I do get overwhelmed while planning my outfit for the following workday, despite having solids and prints for easier coordination. I don't know if anyone else deals with the following issues: going through Menopause within the last several years leading to weight gain (especially in my tummy area!) that has hung on for dear life...ugh. Also, I lost 2 1/2 inches in height within the last few years, so some long items like maxi dresses and skirts are really long on me now. 🙄😁❤️
Love these ideas and suggestions. I have way too many clothes and need to reduce my inventory big time. Getting the items out that I want to use in the short term Will really help
I have been using another app for about three years, but added open wardrobe because of the contact with Alyssa and a few other stylists that I like. I haven’t had time to move over my clothes yet, but I am enjoying checking out others outfits for inspiration.
Love your tip on "sub-conscious" planning...I realized I too do this...lol...you articulate your tips so beautifully!! Thank you for your lovely videos.💃💃💃
I love all of your videos. Thanks!! Would you consider create a video about belts and other accessories? You wear terrific belts, such as the one that you are wearing in this video. Where do you find them? What do you consider the perfect belts for different outfits?
I've downloaded the app to compare with My Closet, which I already have. It has some nice features, and I can have it on my phone and tablet instead of just one. However, I'm not sure that I can face re-photographing everything, and My Closet is more versatile for some things. Maybe I will keep Open Closet just just for holiday planning and the information and community.
There’s no way I could plan a week ahead, even when I was working and knew exactly what my days would entail (sitting at a desk!). I want to dress differently if it’s gloomy/drizzling vs partly cloudy vs sunny and warm, etc.
Hence why I use it as a *creative* springboard, not a hard & fast *restriction* . E.g. I'll hang up my outfits for the week but the morning of I may choose a different accessory (like a raincoat VS a heavier one if the forecast changes, or green instead of purple jewellery just because it sings more to my heart that day). I *still* find this saves more time compared to coming up with an outfit from scratch! Plus it saves on laundry (e.g. if I've worn an item on Monday but it's not dirty, I like to find ways to remix it with Tuesday or Wednesday's outfit). It helps me flex my creative muscles to work around an existing piece instead of getting overwhelmed by a blank canvas each time - but everyone's different, ofc!
Amen to all of that, Alyssa! I tend to do one or two weeks worth of outfits at a time. Then have that ready to select from each day. Soo reassuring and a whole lot less last minute stress.
Thanks! You identified the practice I do which is to take options out in order to facilitate my future choice. It seems to work. And: headed to Ottawa for a birthday fête of big proportions so... knowing the weather will be fluctuating, I am taking out my potential outfits this weekend for mulling over.
Thank you Alyssa. I'm often the last minute person, I tend to procrastinate, above all when I'm tired in the evening. Sometimes I have luck and I put together an outfit that I like, sometimes I loose time and I don't feel comfortable at all, but I must go out anyway 😅 because it's getting late. I must say that you helped me a lot creating a more personal style with what I already have, so that it's easier to choose. Ciao from Italy! 😘
Alyssa, thank you so much for another great video on being more consious. If I may ask, what is the model/brand of the watch with black leather straps in the video? I am looking for a similar model for a year now but can't find anything alike and without going broke)
Im a stay at home mom and my wardrobe consists of jeans and Ts. So I am quite underwhelmed with my wardrobe choices😂. I downloaded the app and hoped it will help me jazz up my options!
Love the travel tip! I actually did this when preparing for a recent trip to Mexico and it helped me from overthinking and overpacking (2 weeks carry on only)! Also thank you for sharing the Open Wardrobe app.
Open wardrobe is fun in theory but it's a lot of work to photoshoot your wardrobe lol still kinda fun when you're feeling creative. I really need help creating a capsule for hot weather vacation. Lol help me Alyssa!☺️
I love the practice of pulling out travel clothing 2 weeks in advance. I invariably pack last minute, and do anything but curate… always taking/packing too many items because I cannot decide on what to take at the last minute! Great advice!
You are so right and on point regarding vibrational energy in our closet in our subconscious I love the woo woo give me all the Woo Woo You Got! Love you!
Could you please do a video on styling for those who live in hot and humid climates? Our climate is very warm (80's-100's °F) with 80% humidity for 75% of the year. Putting together outfits that are stylish and yet comfortable is very challenging. I am almost 60 and feel uncomfortable wearing shorts when going to appointments, but prefer separates. Variety seems to be sacrificed, and I always end up in the exact same types of clothes for months on end. Thank you for any help you can give !
@Momma K's Cafe Did you see the post here from @MJTV? Where they talk about keeping a file of styling images that match with garments in their closet. /Perhaps there are fashion designers or stylists from climates similar to your own whose looks you could borrow? Whether that's Florida or Louisiana, Spain or Greece, Thailand or the Philippines, Puerto Rico or Costa Rica. Hope some inspiration comes your way!
This is such great info, been planning outfits and using an app for planning clothes for few years and I love it. It helps reduce my time pondering/procrastinating my wardrobe in the morning. Especially great for holiday planning, I pack so much lighter now and use it to do a seasonal audit and see what I haven't worn so I can sell it on or donate. Love the idea of putting your outfits on a rail to help decide what your taking going to try this for my next trip.
Playing with Open Wardrobe on my phone waiting for the video to start, not even joking. The topic made me think of it. Wasn't sure if it was going to be a huge waste of time, or actually useful. Actually useful, 100%. I've always has a limited wardrobe, would be a capsule if I didn't have too many gaping holes to really function. You inspired me to find a good consignment store. I started experimenting, but was really not used to working with more than a handful of items, or buying more than 1 piece every 6 months or so. I was worried I'd forget about things I'd bought & waste them. The app has been helping me remember what I have, and to actually play with my clothes. And on the rough days, flipping through the outfits I've already saved really has given me an easy answer, fast. I like that I can also start with something I want to wear & see what I've already figured out looks good with it. Thanks!
I've been using the OpenWardrobe app for a while now and it really helps! I love creating variations of outfits and it helps me see the colours of my clothes much more easily! I'm definitely using that tip about hanging upcoming occasionwear this week! I have a friend's graduation party and I have no idea what to wear so I think putting out my options will certainly help me decide! Thank you once again for a great video!
Using an app to organize clothes has saved me money and I will sometimes start from scratch creating outfits and putting them in folders for specific things such as every day casual or work/worship outfits. One is for formal. Sometimes it’s a fail but I can tweak it after I see a picture or mirror. Wonderful suggestions ❤
Alyssa, This is one of your BEST videos yet…… It is a great joy for me to see you blossom and come into your own, into who you are….. I find technology annoying because it is too constricting for me. It cannot keep up with me and my vision. That said, I downloaded the wardrobe app. I’ll try it. I may even consult you privately! You GO GIRL!!! M
yes, a lack of mental space and decision fatigue... that is the issue for me.. so, after years of struggles I decided to let other people do the thinking and now I shamelessly copy outfits, haha... I have a file filled with pictures of outfits.. I made it a habit to save every picture which features clothing pieces similar to what is in my wardrobe already. Additionally, when I shop online I save a picture of the outfit presented with the piece that I am buying.. as often I buy a piece because I like the styling presented... I also limited myself in options by deciding that my style is "old money" and I do not pay attention to the trends too much... anyways I noticed that it is much easier to be "trendy" as my wardrobe has many classic pieces that are also very basic... with an addition of "trendy" bag or belt or shoes or hat I can easily "update" my wardrobe
I always plan my outfits ahead for the week. I will put together outfits, iron, and hang the choices on a rod in my utility room. Then I can pick which outfit I want each day.
I don’t necessarily put a week of looks together v, but play in my closet and always have outfits put together in the front for whenever I don’t feel inspired to put something together or when dreaming of a new season when weather isn’t quite there yet. I am a mood dresser and sometimes the mood is not to decide, lol 7:51
Alyssa, thankyou for this video, great content. How about some tips for those hohum days when you feel seriously UNDERWHELMED by your wardrobe/closet??
I suggest exactly the same for my clients with meal planning, so my I can transfer skills for my wardrobe, as I tend to think of it the night before, or while walking in the morning. I would love to be a little more organised, thanks for this video, so helpful 😊
Je suis tes conseils à la lettre, je fais 3 kits et je choisis car au Québec la température change vite.. Merci de tes bons conseils mais je suis encore une acheteuse compulsive haha!!
I started to put a number of items in a box to give away. I have a lot of Sympli stuff I liked at a point in time but now really don’t. But then I tried on one outfit and realized it looked better than I thought. So I wonder, is it ok to give away things based on my no longer wearing those jersey fabrics or is that shallow. To be fair, I got my money’s worth from them. Do I keep them forever because they are virtually indestructible. Am I committed for life??
@S KD I say No! You're not committed to your 'indestructible' Sympli garments for life 😃 Just as we change hairstyles, jewellery, footwear and purse styles across our lives. It does help if you can thoughtfully assess whether these garments could be worn by someone else? or whether they only have value now as fabric. If you're donating - are the garments in good enough condition for a thrift shopper to pay money for? Could a friend or family member make use of them? Are you a sewer? (or anyone else you know). So many options if you have creative hands! (From cushion covers to pet coats, tote bags to cosmetic purses, hair bands to eye masks etc etc). You are no longer the same person who bought those garments. A là Marie Kondo: you can thank them for their durability and service, then let them go from your closet and life.
When you’re traveling with a limited capsule, how do you keep your basic white Oxford shirt fresh, wrinkle free, when wearing multiple days? I prefer to wear classic buttoned, well structured cotton blouses, dressed up & down. But I have difficulty limiting the number! Thanks!
what do I do when I want to wear everything and can't decide out of like 20 ideas??? That is my main problem. I have put in so much work into my wardrobe and love everything I have and so I want to wear it all the one day a month I go to the office....
Putting together a outfit is a little easier than trying to figure out what shoes to wear with it? Especially right now transitioning from winter boots to spring shoes. 🤪

I love the three books you recommended. Please do more book suggestions. I love your videos. You re great. Best. Linda
Open Wardrobe might have just changed everything for me. I had no idea anything like this existed! Now I need it for recipes and groceries....
I’ve started to use one. Makes me feel very organised!
I love Open Wardrobe, so glad I’ve digitised my wardrobe! It really makes creating outfits and packing lists so easy. I also love that you can upload items to a Wish List and upload pictures of your looks. Great app 💙💙💙
yes!! It's a favourite for so many reasons!
On the contrary, I feel so excited about the choice in my wardrobe that I have) That's why I keep my wardrobe maximalistic, in order to have a choice

(using my pal's YT acct)
😅 I feel that because fashion is cyclical it’s good to not let go of items too hastely😁
Totally agree about last-minute decisions being an issue! If I can spend some time working something out, I can work it out. 👌
Clothes racks are very handy, especially when a closet is full. An empty rack can be great to hang a comforter or a blanket.
love that idea!
@@AlyssaBeltempo the Orientals hang a futon on a rack outdoors to air it out.
I like planning at least 3-4 work outfits at once. Not only is it a time saver, but you can have outfits prepared for different temperatures.
So glad you found that tip helpful! xx
I have been using another app for about three years, but added open wardrobe because of the contact with Alyssa and a few other stylists that I like. I haven’t had time to move over my clothes yet, but I am enjoying checking out others outfits for inspiration.
I'm so glad you gave OW a try Kathy :) xx
❤❤❤ I love Pinterest. I pick an outfit and then go to my closet to pull out similar pieces. Bingo! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I get that! Weather plays a huge part xx
Channeling our own Cher Horowitz with the digital closets!
Letting your intuition do the work absolutely works for me! It always chooses the better options😁
WOW HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! And I hope you emjoy Ottawa xx
I just received your Alyssa belt from Brave Leather, the bone colour. Love, love, love it and I got your discount.
I'm so glad you found the channel helpful! xx
Have you seen Emily Wheatley's UA-cam channel? She is a mum and does amazing things with jeans and Ts. But you're still my favourite, Alyssa 💕
I second this suggestion! Would love to see more options for hot weather climates.
@@comealongcomealong4480 thanks so much! I will check it out!
Thank you for this! I feel like I can use this info on analysis paralysis to other parts of my house… and In life🤣 grazie mille Alyssa ❤
YES - I find so much of my slow fashion ideas can be applied elsewhere! xx
I have always done that before a trip...hung the clothes in a different room a couple weeks (or 3) beforehand. Glad to know I'm in good company! 😊
Great tips …they make so much sense and so doable too….
Ok I love your videos. I have to know the brand name jeans with the flat front pockets. I love them. I found a close pair by Lauren Conrad at Kohls.
Yes…please do share the name and brand of the jeans!
I usually just roll a die or a pair of dice- probability distribution is the best way to solve decision fatigue! My 2 cents !! Lol 😂- hugs 🤗, Amy
I'm a journalist and used to be a food writer. It really helped me when I started thinking of my wardrobe as a pantry, so I definitely relate to that!
@@marcalpena5657 I love that, thinking of your wardrobe as a pantry :)
This is why I like travel - really gotta pare down.
@@comealongcomealong4480 Thank goodness. I will take your suggestions and
Love the blouse...
When you’re traveling with a limited capsule, how do you keep your basic white Oxford shirt fresh, wrinkle free, when wearing multiple days? I prefer to wear classic buttoned, well structured cotton blouses, dressed up & down. But I have difficulty limiting the number! Thanks!
Also light trousers. I look a pair to Italy last week and only got one wearing before they looked grubby.
❤ Great tips
what do I do when I want to wear everything and can't decide out of like 20 ideas??? That is my main problem. I have put in so much work into my wardrobe and love everything I have and so I want to wear it all the one day a month I go to the office....
Putting together a outfit is a little easier than trying to figure out what shoes to wear with it? Especially right now transitioning from winter boots to spring shoes. 🤪
Great video ! Are you trousers Sezanne size 36 ? Do they sit right above the navel ? Thanks
Please let me know what belt your wearing and your blouse!
What’s wrong with “should”?
I start by watching the weather forecast to choose the right shoes, then I choose the rest, accordind to them...
❤
❤👍🏼
Does anyone else have the main issue of their entire wardrobe existing in a pile and laundry basket?
