Post-holidays it would be amazing to have a video on incorporating those more special holiday pieces with more casual ones to create high-low outfits and get more use out of them!
I love the dressier clothing styles but I also don't have a lifestyle that requires it. Work parties are bounce houses with a snack table and I haven't been to a wedding or dinner event in over 10 years. Long story short, my closet doesn't coincide with my life so occasionally, my husband will come home from work or training to find me watching Netflix in a party dress.
Best piece I’ve ever bought when I had no idea when or where I’d wear it is a DVF wide leg jumpsuit that has kind of a kimono style wrap top and a long sash belt. It’s 100% silk, I feel amazing in it, always get compliments, ans I’ve had it for at least 12 years now ❤ weddings, holidays, date nights, any time of year it just always works.
When a special occasion is coming up, including a sudden funeral or seasonal/party-ware, I can now go to my closet and make an outfit very quickly. This is because after following you for 3 years, I realized that I’ve always loved separates, learning the elements of style has helped me mix and match them more organically. Focusing on varying textures, different silhouettes, different natural fibres, juxtapositions, etc has elevated my style and given me more appreciation and confidence ❤
This is you at your best. And the representation is next level fab. And, that black and cream outfit is giving EVERYTHING. Thank you. I’m grateful for you.
The one piece or separates question is awesome! I have separates, and I like the practicality in concept. But in reality, when I have the wedding or new years' eve party, I feel like the separates, which I wear in my regular outfits when we go out to eat or what have you, are not special. So I prefer having some killer dresses for the 'big' events.
Yes please - I'm already looking forward for vol 2 of this - please give more ideas for a Christmas party at work, a birthday party, a babtism - or just seeing very good friends. Have a very niceday
First-this was exactly what I asked for ! Thanks. Can’t wait for your examples but glad I have time to try on my own. Second-Elements of Style was the best $20 I ever spent. Most of your best teachings in one place Third - We are hosting our annual Christmas Eve party and I want to look great. This is close family and friends. Some will be casual, campy or dressy. I’m a slacks gal…. Fourth-see you at the Live event
Kathy!❤ thank you so so much - I know you will look amazing at your Christmas Eve party 🎈 so grateful that you are coming to the live event and that you enjoyed the coursenn
Great video! I bought a pewter sequinned top last year, and felt so guilty when I only wore it once, but I loved it when I wore it! Thank you for giving permission to buy pieces we love, I always find I have nothing dressy enough when events come up, so look forward to finding more ways to style this!
I have fully embraced your philosophy of ‘how do I want to feel’ Alyssa and that translates to hair, makeup, perfume, jewellery and well loved pieces that come out to play at this time of year 💫
So happy to see that gray fringe skirt in the background. I wondered if it had been declutterred. I just love that piece. My favorite line in this was that we have to be “constant curators, not just shoppers.” With that in mind I am going to give the gift of Alyssa to my sister for Christmas and invite her to join me for the live shop your closet.
I loved that question if we're a one piece one and done, or a two piece "person" for events. Never really reflected before. I am definitely a one piece person, ALL my event ware is a one piece, from dresses to jumpsuit, just never thought about this before - thanks for allowing me to find that out for myself 😄
Yeeeears ago I had a lot more cocktail-to-formal events in my industry and social life (even though most of my friends and I were starving artists). I always envisioned myself in perfect fancy vintage party dresses for these events, but most of the time I had to make do with creative use of separates, which wasn't my ideal vision! However! I picked up on the fact I got tons of compliments on my separates every single time, ESPECIALLY for the most formal events where the norm was a fancy dress and so the separates were seen as edgy, daring, and devil-may-care. I also picked up on the fact that it was a lot of fun for me to put these outfits together from what I already had in my closet! More fun than stressing over the right dress, which made the events more fun for me too. I still love a fancy vintage party dress whenever a perfect one comes along!
This is great! Yes to a part two with lots of styling visuals! The tutu outfit is fantastic! The gold and green color combo is very festive without the overwhelm
100% agree on “constant” shopping not just at the holidays. I have wanted a taffeta full length skirt forever. Found in the summer in a charity shop for about $7. So many options for the top. I have worn it over a knee length sequinned dress, simple sweater, crazy Christmas sweater and more. Big believer in the “want” list. Thanks Alyssa. Always good.
Holy smokes. This is a video for the ages. So many good tips. I hope you will recycle this video and show it every holiday season. I know I will need to hear them again. By the way, this is a place where Indyx can help. A stylist you can see something in our closet that we didn't even know would be perfect for a holiday event.
Absolutely love your style! I’ve learned a lot since subscribing, so thank you! I struggle with maintaining my personal style as I’m aging. Living in a retirement community is also challenging. I’ve always enjoyed standing apart from the masses. Would love to see a video on this topic.
That is the best approach to event dressing ever!! I usually buy something specifically for an event and never feel like myself, now I understand why. What a revelation thank you 😊 fantastic.
For the type of special occasions that I attend, I like mixing a formal bottom with a casual top or vice versa. That way I don't feel I am too dressed up and feel more comfortable. I wear a lot of black and it can be all black or mixed with one colour. It allows me to wear a good percentage of my clothes for any occasion and keep my wardrobe minimal. It actually also give me endless possibilities of mixing and matching.
I’m a modest dresser, I dress based on mood and occasion: church, work, errands. I love mixing and matching classic, edgy and casual pieces so I feel I don’t have an exact style preference. I think that’s why I’ve always loved Alyssa’s channel. I’ve tried incorporating her tips to my outfits and get compliments when least expected. Someday Im hoping to go into slow fashion/no shopping lifestyle. 😂Hoping to see videos for modest yet fun ideas. Thanks Alyssa!
Way in advance but I'm going to Italy next October for two weeks. It's my retirement gift to myself and I am planning on putting together several looks that are elegant and perfect for the weather. I was told "put together something you don't normally wear but that you feel fabulous in". Picture yourself sitting outside having a glass of wine." Can't wait to see what holiday looks you have for us.
Oh yes, i'm totally like you... I usually wear a beautiful blouse (with a t-shirt under) and a long skirt (which i use with leggings). On top, a dressy type of coat, one that seems more of a dress then a coat ;) . I use makeup and hair styles to compensate for my lack of style and cold disposition :D
I have 2 dresses that are my go-tos for events, both with pockets, thank you very much. They are elegant and understated so they can be worn for less formal events, and I found this exquisite vintage Egyptianesque overdress that can be paired with either of them if I really need to step up the wow factor. I never need to buy anything for events ever again because these 3 pieces cannot be topped. 🎉🎉🎉
My biggest “pain point” is literal. I take my daughter to the nutcracker every year and I am so tired of my feet killing me. I’ve been playing around with the idea of wearing high top converse.
I’m definitely a separates gal. I used to enjoy wearing a cocktail or formal dress to events, but I now prefer the flexibility that separates give me. I can up with a variety of looks with a handful of pieces, and nobody seems to notice that I’m wearing the same elements in different ways. I think that dresses can be very memorable, and don’t work across a variety of occasions, unless we’re talking about a LBD. Hope I’m making sense! My dilemma happens every Christmas: what to wear when you are hosting and doing all the cooking? My small kitchen gets very warm, and I’m constantly on my feet for most of the day, so ideas for festive but comfortable attire would be very appreciated. Thanks Alyssa!
This video has helped me realise I over-categorise formal & event wear: house/birthday party; quiet night out; weddings etc; “disco”; going straight there vs. from somewhere else…. I apply my personal style to everything else but there’s a lot more “I’m supposed to wear this” for events.
Love the thought process of dressing for special occasions and looking forward to part 2! I repeat my sequined party skirt regularly… and no one else notices (except now I told you all lol)! 😉🎉
OMG! How I dress is how I feel… I really thought it was just me. It’s a real thing and as I’ve gotten older only in numbers not clothes or my thinking about dressing I EXHALE and love you and your channel. Thank you Ciao 😊
I have a very casual life style. My favorite outfit is a midnight blue two piece velour outfit that is probably +30 years old. Still looks new. Different accessories can make it casual to pretty fancy. Tuck in the top with a decorative belt and I have a jumpsuit. I have a few other pieces that I can level up or down.
So good, Alyssa! I always struggle with this especially around the holidays so thank you for coming to my rescue. Earlier this year I bought a gold sequin maxi skirt (alllll the drama) for no reason other than I loved it and it was on a great sale. Now it doesn’t fit anymore so I need to alter it 😆 but I’m excited to see how I can mix it with different tops for totally different vibes. 🥂🍾
There is so little content on this but I would really like a special occasion capsule wardrobe. The idea being that I have a capsule wardrobe for a bunch of occasions, that I could get different looks from - so I don't feel like I am always wearing the same thing.
I would love to see toddler mom appropriate holiday dressing for a casual setting. It's one thing to get "dressed up" for me, but I'd love to see what you have to say about more down played situations but when you still want to feel special. ❤
I have recently acquired a People tree long jumpsuit. It is black, crossover front, exremely flattering waistline and I can easily dress it up with a fancy belt and a necklace. But it feels like pyjamas, so I can easily sit down on the carpet to play with my kids at an event or bend over to pick them up if needed.
What about dark jeans with a washable knit-velvet top? I realize that most of the retailers I know who sell high-quality washable velvet tops are aimed at older women, but take a look anyway. Soft Surroundings for example has beautiful faux-wrap velvet tops in a large range of sizes. Absolutely gorgeous.
Loved your ballerina skirt and gold trouser outfits. I am attending an early February wedding and I purchased a burgundy merino wool V-neck pleated dress. I am 68 and would love to be able to wear this dress for other occasions including going out to a nice dinner. Could I wear black tights and a black pump with this dress? Any other options? I would love to see a video on how to style some holiday-ish tops and sweaters in a casual way beyond the holidays. Thanks.
Mmmm! That sounds wonderful! I'm imagining that dress with boots and a beautiful silk scarf. Can you make it casual with a denim jacket or other jacket layer?
Great video. I am going to the theatre in a couple weeks, in a very cold climate. I have a charcoal sweater dress and tall black boots. I would love ideas for adding a little attention-grabbing to a basically cozy, dark outfit.
That's a perfect backdrop for statement jewelry, accessories and/or a fabulous silk scarf in a bold print. You have countless possibilities! Can't wait to see Alyssa's ideas on the subject. Enjoy your night at the theater!
@jeanninehensley7780 It may not be your style. But a solid, bright color, faux fur, long-line gilet would definitely amp up your monotone layer of dress and boots. Or a cropped leather jacket over your shoulders in a color like red, mauve, bright blue, silver etc
Event dressing - I think many of us have items that become ‘ordinary’ because we wear them so often. For me it’s a white flowy skirt, but I know this could be easily styled for a special event, with help 😊
Hello Alyssa! Thank you for your timely and informative video. We'll be celebrating U.S. Thanksgiving this week, and I'm wondering what to wear. A versatile idea that could be a video and repurposed into YT shorts and IG posts is combining scenario and style. Two examples immediately come to mind. One, I am attending a Thanksgiving dinner, where I will also be making a dish at the host's house. So, I want to dress with ease and holiday flair. I will probably wear a darker color, especially on top, in case I spill anything while cooking. What do I wear if I'm hosting a holiday party at home? I live in a tropical area. How do I infuse the holiday spirit when it's too hot to wear velvet, and sequins get a bit tricky? I hope this helps.
It is not holiday specific, but most of the events I go to are dance parties (swing dancing). One option is to dress in period-correct (1920's-1940's) dresses, but I usually struggle when I want it to be less costume-y and just want to dress up nicely, in more current clothes. The shoes are kittenheel t-straps or flats (strappy sandals), and the outfit needs to allow me to dance, lift my arms, etc... we will have a Christmas dance party so I would love to hear your suggestions fir this scenario :)
Thanks for the video 😊. For me the one part usually looks more dressy and formal. So it's what you say about how I want to feel. For the next time, if possible I would like to see an outfit that makes uou feel special at a Xmas party which is not really formal. Some guests are in jeans and t-shirts
Alyssa, I love those gold jeans! What is the fabric? I have done that fluffy skirt with a blouse and belt but in reverse color, dark on bottom and light on top. Great info! Ciao!
Not a holiday, but a special event: how do you handle dressing for things like graduations where the prompt seems to be looking professional as well as celebratory? Even harder when the color aspect comes into play (school color or color of profession). I might have a great dress that makes me feel good, but it's more suited to the ballet or a wedding (shows more skin) than a professional event or it's a fine work dress but it's the wrong color to go with the graduation hood. Not to mention seasonality (a fancy dress in winter is hard to style)!
I always struggle with dresses that have no sleeves for the corporate Christmas party. What do l put on top? I don't want to be cold, as the venue is not heated, but l want the dress to be seen...
Wear fine knit merino wool or cashmere silk, I bought a beautiful velvet long sleeve midi dress with deep v neck it's beautiful it looks vintage and a raspberry red looks great for Christmas
I would appreciate if you share more of your dress up looks. For example, my creativity is only enough for neutral jeans and bright blouse. Or a plain dress + colored earrings. What other sets may I use for a party with friends or going out?
@michelemeadows4949 Did you see the post from @natalyatucker3158 in this thread. Same role and occasion as yourself. You may be able to inspire each other 🤝
I'd love to figure out how to style in a dressier way, while still being comfortable enough to flop on the couch or play on the floor with all my friends' dogs. Our holiday parties are generally casual affairs with family and friends, but I'd still love to feel pretty. Wide-leg trousers have been my go-to for a long while. I just can't quite get the right balance with an outfit that actual feels "dressed up".
I am a separates person for everything but special events. I feel like one piece for special events makes them more special but honestly I would LOVE separates that LOOK like they are one piece. A skirt and shirt that are the same fabric and color and look like a dress (or jumpsuit) but is not. It would be my ideal but I am a last minute panic shopper as well. I'm always wanting a wardrobe where I can open the door, pull pieces that fit and look good and be out the door. But, I'm not there, yet. I'll get there.
Big pain point now is a mid fall mother of the bride dress that I can truly enjoy at formal events after. Formal wear for these occasions is often unflattering (excessive lace and florals), and they are becoming cheap looking.
Love this video, thank u! I have a red velvet, fitted halter "vest". How would you style this item to get a classic look with a touch of edgy ? I do have black trousers and black leather slim fit pant . Also jewelry suggestions appreciate!
@midlifemom5829 Your post made me think of Carla Rockmore. Who recently styled - in a short video - a black leather plunge front vest. She wore a sheer long sleeve top underneath in the same color, to dial back on the sexiness.
Sometimes I put a long skirt over a dress. Or a top over a dress. Chosen carefully, 2 dresses, one top and one skirt can be 7 outfits from 4 pieces. Enough for most fancy occasions in my life anyway, and nobody ever clues in to the repeat, not even in photos.
NYE wedding in VEGAS and the bride has provided a pallet that she wants all guests to dress within 😩 deep blue, fuchsia, pink, coral, and kind of a golden yellow.
I'm in my 80's so not up on current style but I have heard of this trend from my granddaughters. Frankly I can't imagine how any bride can be so selfish and rude. Is she doing her best to make everyone else look awful? I am sure I will get jumped on for this, but even 20 years ago this would have been totally inappropriate unless it was only for the bridesmaids.
I have a 70's themed holiday party in three weeks. I already lived through that era, and except for a beautiful old tie-dye silk scarf I bought on the street in Berkeley, and my Jimmy Carter button, I have nothing in my closet to go with the theme. Any ideas?
@laurahuddleston6285 I would google '1970s NY street style' for some inspo. What I'm seeing is that maxi skirt with split look. Worn with like a crochet vest, or something ethnic and fringed. Wild hair, ethnic jewellery and tinted lens glasses à la Gloria Steinem. In fact, she was photographed alot for her style. Ditto Lauren Hutton. Have fun ....
@TheElla4real Do you go straight to the dinner from work? (That dictates how long you have to refresh.) I looked at your thumbnail and I get Sandra Bullock vibes. If it's dinner only, and sitting, I'd mainly focus on glamming up my top half. If it's mingling, drinks and maybe dancing - I'd think about the full length. One thing I love on Sandra Bullock at events is when her hair has been styled to one side. That would be a big change from daytime You. The other thing to remember is most of the guys will be quite unbothered. Some will even come straight from a bar in their work clothes 😄 Have a fun celebration!
I’m not really the creative type so I would actually need go to pieces that I feel good in and that I know work for me for multiple occasions that I can just pull out and wear, like that little black dress or that suit. I’m having a hard time finding that little black dress though. The challenge has been finding the shape or silhouette that I want and feel good in. I live in the SE US so it would need to be something that works in warm and more moderate weather. Any suggestions?
I am hostning New Year at our house BUT there will be three grandchildren 8, 2 and a tiny baby. I want to look elegant and graceful but need to be practical as the two older will run to grandma all the time and jump, climbe etc with dirty little hands. Oh almost forgot. We have a puppy too that needs walking a couple of times through the evening and is scared of loud noices. Do you have any suggestions??? Lots of love from Sweden 🇸🇪
@evalindell2757 If budget were no object, I would choose luxury looking leisure wear - a matching set - for early in the evening. No dangly earrings or necklaces for little ones to grab. Can also add a jacket or coat to walk your puppy. Then - as the evening progresses, and your grandchildren get snoozy - I would change into a dress in a rich, jewelled colour. Add some jewellery and a little, quick makeup. 🤫 In reality, I would wear jeans or flowy pants. With a knit or t-shirt to be with the kids. Maybe change up for a smart shirt or sparkly knit for later in the evening. Have a delightful NYE!
@elisabethhagspiel3695 Not been to Berlin. But I associate your city with modern architecture and art. What would you wear to an exclusive, invitation-only exhibition? The other area is a high-level corporate or government event. Like, what would you wear to a Lufthansa Christmas party? Or a cocktail evening at the Argentinian Embassy? (These are all fantasy scenarios of course 😉.)
@comealongcomealong4480 🤔I am not moving in this kind of circles, so my assumption might be wrong. I recently read or heard somewhere that "Berlin style is early 80ies homeless." I am originally from Munich and whenever I am back, I notice how very different the Berlin vibe is.
Post-holidays it would be amazing to have a video on incorporating those more special holiday pieces with more casual ones to create high-low outfits and get more use out of them!
Yes! Love this idea!

Yes especially if you live in a cold winter climate
Living in New Zealand Xmas is hot and all UA-cam is full of cold Xmas ideas! This was so helpful!!💞💞💞
This made me take the leap of getting rid of those specific holiday clothes that just feel like a costume

Filene's Basement and Loehmann's were great for getting dressy clothes for a song. I miss them so much.
Yes! I miss Loehmanns! I was able to instantly find special occasion clothing.
Yes for part two! 😊
Super happy to be the first to comment this great video!

And those gold pants?? RRRRRooar!!!
@@melaniemcneil407 Thank you for the ideas. It is 3/4 sleeve and I would definitely wear boots with this dress.
Work holiday lunch, it’s not fancy but I’d like to feel a little festive.
Do you want to give some inspiration for a winter wedding? Love your video.
Love this question Kerra!
@@AlyssaBeltempothank you!
@KerraBolton Would it be appropriate to wear a festive apron over top for the Thanksgiving event?
A difficult event every year is Christmas at home, because I am in the kitchen 😂
Summer wedding 🎉
What about something layered underneath instead? a sheer top, a silk blouse?
A pashmina shawl?
Wear fine knit merino wool or cashmere silk, I bought a beautiful velvet long sleeve midi dress with deep v neck it's beautiful it looks vintage and a raspberry red looks great for Christmas
I would appreciate if you share more of your dress up looks. For example, my creativity is only enough for neutral jeans and bright blouse. Or a plain dress + colored earrings. What other sets may I use for a party with friends or going out?
Would love work party outfit in pangs option. ❤ not to fancy not to casual but cute AF ❤😂
Cute is unprofessional.
@barbara4410 not in my world
@@thiftingmybestlife You decide,of course.
mother of the bride; fall wedding
@michelemeadows4949 Did you see the post from @natalyatucker3158 in this thread. Same role and occasion as yourself. You may be able to inspire each other 🤝
Occasions where you want to be free to enjoy eating and not feel self conscious or feel constricted but still look good
I'd love to figure out how to style in a dressier way, while still being comfortable enough to flop on the couch or play on the floor with all my friends' dogs. Our holiday parties are generally casual affairs with family and friends, but I'd still love to feel pretty. Wide-leg trousers have been my go-to for a long while. I just can't quite get the right balance with an outfit that actual feels "dressed up".
Would love style on a ladies tea
I am a separates person for everything but special events. I feel like one piece for special events makes them more special but honestly I would LOVE separates that LOOK like they are one piece. A skirt and shirt that are the same fabric and color and look like a dress (or jumpsuit) but is not. It would be my ideal but I am a last minute panic shopper as well. I'm always wanting a wardrobe where I can open the door, pull pieces that fit and look good and be out the door. But, I'm not there, yet. I'll get there.
I’m a one and done (dress) but need help with styling so it looks different for different events. Would love styling suggestions.
Big pain point now is a mid fall mother of the bride dress that I can truly enjoy at formal events after. Formal wear for these occasions is often unflattering (excessive lace and florals), and they are becoming cheap looking.
@natalyatucker3158 Do you mean Fall 2025? In which case I'd wait - available styles and on-trend colors may change over the next few seasons.
How brilliant to curate an event wardrobe year 'round/over time! I feel like a face palm is in order here.🤦♀
I need an outfit for a new year Party with our friends. Comfortable but chic and elegant. Would love to know your suggest!❤
Can you suggest outfits for an office holiday party at a space outside the office?
I live in Florida, any videos for fall in Florida please
How about something glamorous to where if you are hosting Christmas and will be cooking all day, but want to sit down to dinner in something nice.
Yikes, those sound like Vegas colors. If u go heavy in sequins you cant go wrong, JK not JK😂
@@catherinemoon3003 I am perplexed. But afraid to question the bride. 😅😭😂
Wedding guest 🙏
fancy but in a cold climate is difficult for holiday parties please help
I have to dress for a Christmas dinner with the office. So i basically have to work all day and then suddenly sparkle at the dinner afterwards. 🙄
My closet has a LOT of black. How can I zhuzh it up for holiday dinners without buying something red or green?
Sparkles or luminous silky white. Scarf, stole, shrug, maybe a statement piece around your waist. And shoes to tie the look together.
@ Thank You!
Event dressing? Dressing for an event in Berlin has yet to be invented... 😉
@@elisabethhagspiel3695 So funny - and probably true. Maybe like NYC in the eighties too. Grungy, arty street wear.
