  • How to read a furnace wiring diagram. In this video I show how to "read" or follow the wires on a gas furnace wiring diagram. I go over a schematic diagram and a ladder diagram and explain how the different components get energized and it what order. The diagram I am using is actually a pretty simple one compared to many of the others out there. I selected this one because it would be easier to follow along on it. If you were out in the HVAC field though, preferably you should have the furnace operation manual along with the wiring diagram. The manual will tell you which components get energized, in what order, and how long they are energized for. As I explain in the video, the wiring diagram is not straightforward and unless you know how the furnace works, it will be very difficult to figure out the wiring diagram.

    I am an 18 year old service tech. Been working in the field for almost 7 months and yesterday I came across a problem where I didn't know what to do, and watching this video now I realize I might've ordered the wrong part 😁. Thank you for the very detailed explanation of the diagram. Will help me out a lot in the future.

    Hello my good buddy 👍👌👋✌️🤟🤘🤘🤟🤙👊🤜🤛. Good to see you again buddy I hope you and your family have a wonderful blessed Christmas day ever . Well I ordered bigfoot a help em up harness and it helps me with him in getting him to get up and get around.. one day he can walk well usually of the morning he can walk just like nothing happened to him and then for the rest of the day he can't walk I've been talking to the doctor and she thinks he probably has degenerative myelopathy it's a awful disease it's compared to lou gehrig disease like in human...it starts with the dog not being able to hold himself up in the hind legs and then it affects the front legs till they can't walk or get up and then it affects the breathing and that is the final stage six months is the life expectancy of it but I was reading about it and it said usually the dog will stop eating and drinking because it breaks there spirit... so I'm hoping and praying 🙏 that isn't what he has...I made a gurney board today so I can carry him in case he gets down on me and for easier transport to the doctor..we have had a really good day today he has been in very good spirits he was so happy today and has gave me some really good kisses...I also ordered Arnold a tuxedo for Xmas and I put it on him other day to see if it fits and how it looks.. he looks super sharp I wish you could have seen him im going to dress him up for Xmas because it's his birthday and I will have them a little party because I know that it's going to be my last year with Bigfoot... well buddy I hope you all have a wonderful safe and healthy and happy blessed holidays god bless you and your family 🙏 Jay I will be praying for you all for smooth sailing much love from me and Arnold and bigfoot to you all

Great that he had a very good day today and that you are now much more prepared in the case of things getting worse! Hahaha I would love to see Arnold in a tuxedo. If you'll have the chance, send it to my email (found at the bottom of the video description). I get a lot of emails so many of them don't get answered but I would keep a lookout for yours. We hope you stay safe and healthy as well and have the best Christmas ever!! Prayers and blessings from us as well! Pass on my greetings to Arnold and Bigfoot too 🐕🐕🤙🤙

    Great video. Can you have a video in the future to explain how a two-stage furnace works? During the first stage which usually last about 15 minutes, what is the gas pressure going to the furnace. Once 15 minutes has elapsed and the temperature in the house is NOT at the desired temperature, the second stage starts. Does the gas pressure go down or what happens? Thanks

      Yeah.. Those connections are close to each other and I was using thick markers which doesn't help.. I was indeed wrong, the two wires from the limit switch actually go to 11 and 6. I just looked at the paper version of it right now. What looked like a 5 to me was actually a 6 and the 5 is next to it. Thank you for catching the error!

    • @WordofAdviceTV

      Your furnace is likely overheating. When it shuts off before reaching temp, does the control board blink an error code? I would replace the filter if you haven't done that yet and if it's not the filter, then watch my video on 10 reasons why a furnace overheats for more info.

    Hi jay , BULA (fijian greeting) in the islands, what do u mean by the pressure switch works with negative pressure? Can u plz explain

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  3 роки тому +1

      Aloha Pete! The power vent motor that exhausts the combustion air from the furnace creates a suction pressure inside the fan housing. A little tube is connected from this housing to the pressure switch. Once the power vent motor starts to run, a little bit of air is sucked out of the tube which is connected to a normally open pressure switch. This causes the diaphragm inside the pressure to move and close the micro switch inside the pressure switch.

    Louis we have a Lennix gas heater in our attic the front panel of it has a pressure switch which shuts everything down when you remove the panel. For example if you just want to view the insides you take the panel off and then you put it back on. Well those plastic receivers and males that hold the panel on get old and break. We had this problem. We lost our power to our gas heater up in the attic and our air conditioner Heat pump. No electricity to either one of them. My wife pushed on the panel to get it in its proper position and the gas heater went on. That pressure switch is a pain in the butt if your panel is not on correctly. I’m sure this is for some models only certain ones.

    I have a question. On a two stage system for either an AC or furnace...would disconnecting the low voltage on the first stage stop the furnace/AC operation even in second stage? For example...
    2 stage AC, running in second stage, if Y1 is disconnected (opened), but Y2 was left alone would the AC keep running or shut down?
    2 stage furnace, running in second stage, if W1 is disconnected (opened), but W2 was left alone would the furnace keep running or shut down?

      @Straightoutofchiraq I've been under the mentorship of a few of those before too so I think I know what you mean.. But those older guys really do have a lot of knowledge. Perhaps not much about the high end new stuff but years and years of experience does make a difference. I've learned some really cool stuff from really grumpy about-to-retire techs. As long as I shut up and was respectful, most of the time they were willing to impart some wisdom upon me. 😄

    How can you tell which wire from the 24v side of the transformer is hot and which wire is return? If they are hooked up backwards the voltage will be out of phase with the high side. Will this cause a problem? Might it affect the flame sensor voltage? Thank you for your outstanding videos.

    you are a great guy and great teacher, you are teaching me a lot I am a
    retired disabled individual never work on HVAC. My schooling was far
    away from engineering but interested in knowledge specially if HVAC is
    replaced what happened over the last year in my house. I have a question
    not directly related to the topic of this video but I am annoyed with
    the installer.1- should the thermostat wires coming from thermostat to
    the the furnace kept in a box I believe you call it junction box. He is
    leaving in a fan like but I an thinking to buy a box and keep them away
    from the hand of people even animals. 2- What do you think of putting
    the furnace electrical switch in contact with the white tube drain that
    collects water and drains it in an floor drain about 15 feet away.
    that drains in the ground not the one outside the house. It used to be
    electricity in one side and any water source in the opposite side. It
    bothers me what do you think. I appreciated and have a blessed day.

    Just what I was looking for, I have never worked on a furnace but I now have a job to replace three Baltur furnaces in a high rise building. So at least I know how they work now. The italian schematic for the new furnaces is a bit confusing to say the least but thanks to Jay I am slowly getting my head around it. Main problem is that there are other control panels from around 1970 on the old furnaces and of course there are no wiring diagrams that exist for them so I am really struggling to figure out what is going on there. If any one has any suggestions would like to hear from them. I only have two days to get these installed!

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  3 роки тому +1

      That typically means that the flame sensor is shorting out to something. Most commonly, the flame rod will be touching something metal inside of the burner box or the wire going to the flame sensor is damaged or pinched somewhere. It is also possible that the control board is malfunctioning. For more info on how the flame sensor works, watch my flame sensor troubleshooting video.

      That one I simply found online by googling "gas furnace wiring diagram". But just about every gas furnace will have a schematic like that plastered to the back of the service door/access door. So if you have access to any furnace, you can just take a picture of it's diagram.

      @Michael Sims I know how you feel! Wiring diagrams was a tough class for me too. But I think much of that was due to the fact that I did not know much about how a furnace worked... And like I said in the video, without basic furnace operation knowledge, the wiring diagram alone can be pretty confusing..
