Recently, I have begun viewing UA-cam videos for help on a variety of subjects but this is the first video that encouraged me to make a comment as well as subscribe to its channel because it saved my family time and money. This video explains typical furnace issues with relatable details all within 20 minutes. I did not have to fast-forward through the video and in fact, found it entertaining. After changing the filter with no results, my husband called out a service provider 2 days before Christmas and they were going to charge $265 just to come out, not including what they would have charged to repair and we could imagine the exploitative costs. Your video just saved me hundreds of dollars! After watching, I pulled the flame sensor out of my furnace, cleaned it with a steel wool pad, popped it back in, and the heat came back on. Took 10 minutes. Thank you!!!
Being a lifelong learner who know little about these modern systems, I'm about to start watching everything you've posted to get an education on these furnaces. Glad to have found you.
I’m not a tech and wish I had found this channel earlier. Over two winters I had to learn quickly how the furnace works. If anyone is a DIYer, the best way to fix your furnace is to learn the sequence of the furnace’s operation. Then you can troubleshoot the issues quickly. And be familiar with the furnace model to get parts. Great video! Thank you.
Wish I had found your video sooner. $192 service call to diagnose and clean my flame sensor yesterday. You have now given me the knowledge and courage to try and fix it myself next time I have an issue. Excellent tutorial. Thank you for creating this video.
This video just saved me so much money. Number 1 was my issue, cleaned sensor and reinstalled. It's even warmer in home than before. Thank you so much. Keep up the great work bro!
Thank you so so much! Got home and our house was freezing cold (56F), saw your youtube and I tell you, you were my answered prayer! May God continue to bless you and your family!🙏🏽
WOW you just save me from this cold day lord , my furnace was acting up and to be specific it was the first symptom you were mention in your video, and I just turn the power switch off for a minute and when I when back and turning it back on the furnace just started running completely normal , as you say the furnaces might need a reset from time to time like mine, Thank you Thank you So much ! you are an Angel, Gracias Gracias, from Dayton Ohio God blessed you Sr.
I just discovered your channel and just subscribed. I'm a retired contractor / handyman for 40 years, but never really got into HVAC. I always did maintenance on my own furnace for many years, but after I watched few of your videos, I've learned a couple of things from you. Keep up the good work
Hey, just wanted to extend my gratitude for this video! It's -34 Celsius here and my furnace kept shutting off. I couldn't get any business to come take a look for over 24 hours so I decided to see if I could do something. Thanks to this vid I was able to get the flame sensor out and cleaned up which resolved the problem!
Thank you immensely for this video. It serves as a great reminder of top items to check when experiencing issues with a furnace. We have been having fridged temperatures in Chicagoland the last couple of days, and my furnace has been working almost all the time to try and keep up. However, I noticed there would be periods when the furnace was not turning on, and the temperature inside would drop from 72 to 66 degrees. In my case, it appears the filter needed to be replaced, even though I replaced it last month. I have a higher MERV filter, which might help explain why it got clogged up quickly in a short span and most likely caused a lockout. Please keep up the great work. Providing information on HVAC to homeowners is very beneficial and will help many not be taken advantage of by dishonest HVAC companies.
Brother, thank you for this video. After three days freezing my butt off every night, I found this video, went out tonight with Scotch in hand, cleaned the flame sensor finally I have heat at night! Very clear and easy to follow instructions
I'm a maintenance technician at an apartment complex, and your videos have been amazingly helpful ! Lots of furnace issues as people turn their heat on, and I can't always get an HVAC company out to look at things, so THANK YOU!!!

I recently purchased a new home, about 8 months ago. The furnace started making noises, like a bumping sound, and then would shut off. Found an extremely dirty air filter in the unit, and replaced control board. So many of the symptoms that were described matched my furnace’s ailments to the letter. I’m trying to learn more about the core of the systems in the house, to avoid excessive repair costs, and being able to troubleshoot issues before a more serious problem occurs. Now, when the furnace kicks on, I can listen to each step of the startup process, and know what it is doing, and how it should sound when it’s doing it. Thanks so much for providing these helpful and useful tutorials! Very much appreciated!
I love this guy! He has a video on this & that! I watched about 10 videos on troubleshooting my furnace & my thermostat. An amarture made a video which that's what he called himself not I. He showed me how to fix it in one minute & this video confirmed it & I learned not to call the HVAC specialist too quickly, thank you! I'll keep your videos close by! It's warm again!Your instructions are very clear as well thanks again! 😊
Our furnace stop heating suddenly and we decided to check out your video and make sure we understand what was wrong with the furnace. It turned out it was flame sensor. I follow your advice and cleaned it as you instructed. Thank you so much you just saved us money!
Found your video last night as our furnace stopped running and couldn’t stay on for more than a minute. Just needed to clean the flame sensor and we had heat again! Thank you from someone living through a cold snap in Alberta with -35 windchill weather 🙌🏽
Excellent as always!!! I was doing a couple of handyman jobs for someone this week, she asked me to check the furnace that was firing on, but there was little to no air blowing at the vents. I cleaned the flame sensor, then checked the filter. It was completely blocked, apparently it had not been changed in years! Fitted new one and restored the flow to all vents. The owner was oblivious to the fact that it had one at that location. We should always start with the simple solutions.
You rock! Professor Jay of the HVAC University! I have been dealing with furnace problems without understanding how they work for so many years. The most frequent problem I found is tenants replaced filter but failed to close the panel tightly, causing the door sensor to pop. Can't count how many service calls I've paid where the tech tells me, pushed the panel in, and furnace started working. Honorable mention: Tenant complained the furnace is vibrating so bad that it shook the whole house. Furnace is 30 years old, so the decision is to replace. When the old, trusty (Mars) furnace was removed and sitting on the ground, the problem was clear. A big Target heavy duty plastic bag inside the blower motor. (when they painted the house, the return grid was temporarily removed, the furnace was turned on because it was cold. Furnace sucked in the plastic bag.) I will be watching all of your videos!!!
I'm a heating technician for Town & Country Heating in Wahpeton North Dakota. I watched your video and it was great! The way you explained things was very clear so that anybody could understand it and get a basic knowledge of how a furnace works and what to look for when they're troubleshooting it. It would be nice if everybody watched it because we get service calls and go out to the house and someone says well I tried turning the switch off and on again which of course clears the codes and they never see the codes before they do that so it's a lot of troubleshooting for us once we get there. Plus if they don't know what they're doing and they watch this video at least he'll know what they shouldn't be doing. Anyway great job! I subscribe to your Channel
I watched this video and cleaned my flame sensor and that was the exact problem. Now we are warm again with no bill or wait for the heating company. Thank you!!
High of -2, Low of -20. Furnace shutoff overnight. Woke up on a Saturday and my home was already at 53 degrees. Was stuck waiting on an answering service for the heating and A/C company and they never picked up in the time I was able to resolve with this video. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Wow! You just saved me several thousand dollars with your flame sensor cleaning instructions. Had a guy come check my furnace whose only suggestion was I needed to get a new furnace. Thanks!!
Fantastic! Straight to the point. I appreciate you not skipping over steps. Another channel just said "clean the sensor". You showed exactly HOW to do that without wasting a half hour of my (cold) life. Kudos!
Dude, you are a God to guy's like me. I'm real good with my hands but just not sure of what I don't know. I was charged $400 to replace an ignitor on the coldest night of the year, now I have two hand and can do it myself. You Rock, Bro!
Hi. Great video. My Sterling SC-60 propane furnace, in my garage, stopped working yesterday. It was a dirty flame sensor. Your Problem #1 described my issue exactly. I cleaned the probe with a gentle scotch pad. The furnace is now working properly and my garage is toasty warm. Thank you so much for the great community service you are providing with your clear and accurate videos. Cheers from Newfoundland, Canada.
God bless you.. first time home owner...I know NOTHING lol... this super easy to follow vid saved my fiance and I from having to call out the professionals...I fixed the furnace Bae!! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. A company wanted to remove and replacement my 15 year old furnace costing a couple of grand. I cleaned the flame sensor and now it's working. Thank you, thank you!
Thanks for your video! My issues were exactly what you described with a dirty flame sensor. Removed it, cleaned it and we have heat again. 10 minute DIY repair saved me $$$!
This guy is awesome. Gave me the detailed info on how to fix my furnace and I was able to do it. I believed the same thing happened last year and the “well rated” service I had charged my $500 for it. They didn’t even replace anything. Thanks to this guy I did it for nothing in about an hour tracing it back step by step through the process of how it works. Great job!
Jay you are the best! Just fixed the flame sensor and my furnace is working perfectly now. Can’t thank you enough for your help and your easy to follow instructions. Although the flame sensor was a bit of a pain in the rear end to get to, I cleaned it off and thank goodness it was the problem. Hope you and your family have a great thanksgiving. Take care😊
I want to express a big and sincere thank you for your videos and excellent explanations. It is because of you I was able to fix my furnace myself. It was indeed the flame sensor on my Lennox system. It was short cycling or turning on and off repeatedly. It was such an easy thing to replace and cost less than 50 bucks with shipping (it was an OEM part). I didn't want to go with the 7 dollar ones from amazon after looking at the reviews. It's hard to imagine that little piece was stopping the whole thing from working. I'm on Long Island so the winter hasn't been that cold this season so I took my time learning from your videos. I at first cleaned the sensor but that didn't do it. Anyway, thank you so very much!!!!
Thank you Jay I ordered a service call then started watching your videos had it fixed so quick I cancled the call before the guy even started driving to me saved at least 100
Thank you! Flame Sensor was my problem. 1/4 inch socket was the same on mine and it save me time guessing. I can't believe how easy this fix was. Thank you for such an easy to follow format.
Great video I was just able to clean off my igniter and now my home is back getting warmed. My wife was worried I was gonna mess it up but because of your video I was able to get the job done you’re the best
Your video just saved me sooooo much. Was about to call someone to check my furnace. Stumbled upon this video, took out the flame sensor, cleaned it and problem solved. Thank you for what you do.
Awesome video and detailed trouble shooting. Saved me a service call. Furnace kept cycling with no start. Cleaned flame sensor and we have ignition. Tks.
Furnace was blowing strong but cool air and a technician couldn't come out for 3 days. Watched your video, went into the crawlspace (major fear of mine) and after watching it cycle and cleaning the flame sensor we have hot air again. You just saved me a couple hundred dollars on a tech and a couple days of running space heaters to get through til they could get here. Thank you so much!!!!
Thank you for sharing your expertise with such clarity! Our furnace worked intermittently. Sometimes, it started on the first ignition; sometimes, it needed two ignitions to kick on; other times, it stopped working totally. We followed your advice by cleaning the flame rod and the problem was solved. Thank you!!!
God bless you my friend! We now have a working heater just in time for the freezing weather! It was the flame sensor! God bless you and may you continue to prosper and be blessed!
I can’t thank you enough for help with your videos. I’m a single mom but pretty handy. My Dad passed & he always helped me troubleshoot my house issues. This is helping me save money I simply don’t have. God bless you, your family & friends and for taking the time to help others 💜🙏🏻
You saved me money by watching your videos. My hose for valve pressure was dangling and I didn’t know where it was supposed to go but your symptom check of unplugging that same hose to simulate a plugged valve gave my exact scenario. !
I was able to fix my furnace just by cleaning the flame sensor and replacing the filter, saving a lot of money in the process. Thank you so much 👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I unscrewed the flame sensor, but it was clean. Switched the filter and the flames remained on. Now my home is warm! Thanks for the help. You saved me a service call fee.
I was wondering why this was happening to my furnace and as usual I went to UA-cam and did exactly what he said. It worked like a charm. Saved me money because I contemplating calling a plumber. Thanks man!

Your videos are clear and concise. Furnace was coming on and off , so I followed your “5 most likely problems” video and discovered that it was a dirty flame sensor.
Thanks for this great video! Very clear and easy to follow, even for someone like me who has never opened that panel before in my life. Turns out it was the filter, but the flame sensor got a good cleaning while I was in there anyway. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. My inducer fan was doing just what you said. It did exactly what you said to do with the inducer motor and it came on.
Thank you so much! Flame sensor strikes again! Last time you helped it was the plugged tube. This time I saw it was filling up again, so did a bit of preventive maintenance. You da man
We have been watching this video nonstop for the past week now not because we have a problem with our air conditioner but because my autistic son is obsessed with air conditioners right now and this is the only video he loves. 😅
Thought I lost my furnace last night. Jumped on UA-cam while waiting for the technician and fixed it myself thanks to this video thank you soooooooo much. It was a dirty flame sensor you are a life saver!!!
What a great presentation. VERY informative and well done. in cold weather it is taking 3 hours to return to set temperature. from 66 to 69. Now I can check some things. THANK YOU !
This is a follow-up to my original comment. Just as you said, my problem was the flame sensor that was dirty. Other than the fact that there is very little space in my attic, this was a very easy fix to clean the flame sensor. Thanks to your invaluable knowledge, I learned something and fixed it myself. You are appreciated.
I know me too! Now I’m 5 days into knowing it’s past the blower but still not finding it. I just found these other videos Jay made & will create a file so I don’t lose all this awesome information. It’s great to read about other grateful people! I’m so relieved!
@@misodinamosa the flame sensor is necessarily located close to the burners so it can detect the presence or fire. It’s only about 3 inches long and held in place by 1 or 2 screws. Google it and you may find a photo of one. Good luck.
Your ability to communicate clearly, even funny sometimes, and the wealth of vids you have up, and your extensive knowledge, have you every considered getting a series on Netflix? Seriously, why not?
Thank you for sharing. God bless you! I've experienced 2 of the problems mentioned in your video. I fixed them before watching this video. I confirmed that you're correct!
This is the best video I've viewed on troubleshooting your furnace. My furnace went out last week during the winter storm. Of the 5 symptoms you went through, the blower motor, or maybe the flame sensor, describes my symptoms. Because, when my unit turns on, I can hear the usual humming sound for about a minute, then the furnace just shuts off. I called a heating & air guy & he said that I had a cracked heat exchanger & started quoting me a price to install a new unit. I'll get another guy to look test my blower motor first.
Thank you!!! Saved me so much money hahah. I figured there was no way I could even diagnose the problem let alone fix it but your clear and helpful instructions showed me otherwise. My local HVAC repair man might be a little upset with you, but to me you are A-OK
Thank you so much! It worked like a charm. Our furnace has been doing this for years. It was the flame sensor. I cleaned it. Now it’s working liking it hasn’t in years!
I had the same problem maybe 2 years ago and just now. This same video solved the problem. Saved me 100 dollars plus from a repairman. 2 thumbs up!!! Easy fix!!!

This video is absolutely the best I have seen. Clear description of the problem, what to look for and how to resolve.
Lots of furnace issues as people turn their heat on, and I can't always get an HVAC company out to look at things, so THANK YOU!!!
this guys videos are the absolute “BEST” i fixed mt air conditioner last summer saving a lot of money because of his video, and today i fixed my furnace because of this video, and it didnt cost me anything and it was the simplest fix, i cant thank you enough bro, You are absolutely the best instructor thank you, thank you, thank you
You're welcome! Glad to hear you were able to get your units fixed yourself!
Honorable mention:
Tenant complained the furnace is vibrating so bad that it shook the whole house.
Furnace sucked in the plastic bag.)
I will be watching all of your videos!!!
Thanks!!
Sometimes with their labor costs and part replacement guesswork, it might be cheaper to get a new one. LOL
Take care😊
Dude. I went to, but couldn't finish hvac school. I actually learned more here. Thanks
I’ve never subscribed to a channel or liked a video in my life. You saved us with this video!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!
You just saved me money on a service technician. I just cleaned my flame sensor and it fixed the problem. Thanks a bunch bro!
Summer and winter here you are giving us sound advise, the gratitude and good feelings that you inspire are blessings. THANK YOU AGAIN.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! With your guidance I fixed my furnace myself and saved lots of money that I didn't have.
Excellent description of the sequence of events, and the symptoms of malfunctioning components.
You save me tons of money by just clean ignition and replacing filter, thanks a million!!!
But Now, my gas regulator rattles and vibrates making a noise !! But we have heat for now !!
Thank you!! I just cleaned my flame sensor and we now have heat. Simple fix thanks to your video!!
I was able to fix my furnace just by cleaning the flame sensor and replacing the filter, saving a lot of money in the process. Thank you so much 👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
you're a freaking hero. I'mma figure out what a service call would have cost me and base my donation on that, since you've solved my woes in
Thanks so much! Giving the inducer motor a helping hand is all it took to get my furnace running again.
Thanks man!

Really appreciate it, my problem was the first one, cleaned it and it didn't stop anymore. Thanks a lot.
Good show, nicely done, as a retired Stationary Engineer , I can tell you really know what you are talking about.
You da man
Thank you so very much .i fixed my furnace today by cleaning the flame sensor.from Dawson Creek,BC.Canada
THANK YOU !
Thank you thank you. just by cleaning the flame Sensor my furnace came back to life. you're a good man.
Good luck.
Ty saved me $$$$, since my windshield just needed $90 crack repair I didn't need to have a heating service call.
For me,You are the best HVAC teacher out there on yt!Thanks!
Thank you Jimmy! :)
You’re a natural teacher. Thank you.
Thank you!
Thank you once again. You are thoughtful, helpful, and selfless. A beautiful human being.
Thank you man you really saved my fiance and I today with these videos I was able to reboot our furnace. You Rock! Happy Holidays!
I'm certain you have saved lives! You are doing the work of angels! Thank you so much! Can't find the words! You are a gift to the world!!🥂
I had the same problem maybe 2 years ago and just now. This same video solved the problem. Saved me 100 dollars plus from a repairman. 2 thumbs up!!! Easy fix!!!
