Here is a list of other tools in my shop I used (I am not affiliated with these):
Grizzly G0771Z Hybrid Table Saw www.grizzly.com
The filters I used are MERV 11 filters and I ordered the from AllFilters.com www.allfilters.com/
After installing the mini split AC unit in the shop I decided to build a filter box to go around it. The filters inside the mini split are not designed to filter out all the saw dust created in a wood shop. Since the space around the mini split is limited it limited me on the filters I could use. I designed the box so that there would be a total of four filters, two 12”x12” on each side and two 12”x20” filters in the front. This should still provide enough air for the unit to function properly.

I like this idea over others on UA-cam; the hinge opening helps a lot. I think this can refined to a version 2.0 where the mini split can fully open for maintenance without any disassembly.

What you say about the maintenance is possible. I designed it this way because of the available area to build it. Since I relocated (lost my house to a fire last year) and am building a new shop I wont have the area restraint. Hopefully I will be in and working in the new shop within the month. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

@@AndersenWoodCrafts can you give an update on the mini-split filter box now that it has been 3 years? How did it work? Any airflow issues? Etc. Thanks and great build video

I have a mini split in my shop and 8' 6" ceilings. very similar to what i see in your shop. I need to build a pre-filter for mine because I just say a video on a guy who did not pre-filter the incoming air and killed his 3 year old mini split.

Thanks for your comment. My new shop is almost complete and will be having a mini-split installed and will be doing something similar.

You do know they make Phillips bits for drills now....
I will walk 50 yards to get a Phillips bit instead of picking up a screwdriver right beside me lol.

What if I just laid one a filter on top of the wall unit?

Sorry to hear about the house fire. Hope everyone is alright.
I like the design with the front hinged. Noticed what appears to be a bolt sticking out at each end (5:38 and right at the end). Purpose?
    Any plans or dimensions?
I notice that these filter boxes often seem to be deeper than necessary, or is there something I’m missing?
Happy New Year and stay safe!

I was securing the side filter with a little block of wood, the bolt sticking out is to secure the front filter with a little block of wood. I don't know how imperative it is, but the reason the boxes seem to be deep is to allow enough air in the inside of the box so the unit isn't starved for air. My understanding is that if the filters are to close to the units intake it will starve the unit of air, making the boxes deeper (bigger) allows for enough clean air to be inside the box as to not starve the unit of air.
Thanks for asking about the house. We are settled in the new house, still working on getting the shop up and running. Hopefully I will be posting some new video soon.

No, as with any air filter in the shop, they need to be replaced at least monthly (the recommended every three months won't cut it in the shop). Thanks for your comment.

Great idea until you have to actually clean the coils , or condensation drain line.

It is a little of a pain, but I did make it so that it is relatively easy to remove to perform the maintenance. Thanks for the comment.

I’d easily trade the minor amount of time needed to access the unit for monthly maintenance in exchange for filtered air in my shop. Strongly considering doing this.

I’m curious why you and others use so many sq/in of filter? I am about to make one for my shop mini split, and I wonder this because my whole house ac is larger btu and only uses a single 16x20 filter. I am not trying to criticize, I just don’t understand the logic and all of the ones I have seen are like this or much larger.
I figure double the inlet opening should be sufficient.

The installation instructions for the mini-split gives minimum distances the unit needs to be from ceiling and walls (the minimum distance is 6", but recommends it be around 24") for proper air flow. I used this measurement to build the box. Sorry for the delayed response, thanks for your comment.

It is a pressure drop due to filter resistance issue. More filter surface area means less pressure drop.
Mini-Split fans run at a significantly lower static pressure than central air conditioning fans and are not designed to pull through an additional filter bank, so by increasing the filter surface area, you reduce the impact of this additional filter bank.
The problem is that when you introduce too much resistance you reduce the air flow over the coils. This can cause them to ice up and that is bad for the compressor (in the outdoor unit).
