Hvac guy here , the minisplit units are fantastic and quite efficient $ . They're a bit more difficult to work on than a split system and the filters aren't very good so they need to be cleaned frequently to keep the dust particles out of the fan and coil . I put one in my wood shop too and with regular maintenance it'll keep it comfortable for years to come. Thanks for the video
is there a way to pigy back of the main 5 ton heat pump house unit ? for the evap coils to work in the 3-car shop? thats attached? as i don't have any ducting going to it and i also have a different temp setting from the rest of the house
@@Wraithinkc rats i was hopeing as runing hard piping is doable. so radiant LPG or solar electric pipe/tube vs mini spit for just the garage? by its self 40F to 90F set points for the solar system equipment to keep it happy
@@richardprice5978 no problem ! They are simple to install but you should really have a technician do the vacuum on the lineset to check for leaks and evacuate any moisture in the lines as well as adjust the freon charge
Re: dust & mini splits, you might want to build a filter box. Jay Bates and others have videos on UA-cam. Search for “mini split air filter” or mini split filter box”. Thanks for the video, lots of good info.
Here in New Zealand we mainly use these type of units for Heat / Cooling and I have been working with these for 20 years. The Gree units are considered to be a cheaper model that doesn't handle the cold as well as a Daikin or Mitsubishi system.
Great job of explaining purpose and benefits of a mini spliter for people who are not aware or familiar with them. Also, kind of a recommendation of the Mr Cool. Thank you I'm trying to decide on a mini splitter now
Normally, all those mini-split have a "dry" mode, that is a des-humidifier mode. I have not checked all models and brands, but all the units I have used have that dry mode. Talking about cooling units only because in Thailand we don't need heating. Cleaning the filter is VERY important, and having the system pressure washed at least once a year is important too. Recently, I started using 3M Filtrete, a 2.5PM filter mesh, that you apply on your unit plastic filter. It does a very good job at catching dust and I think it helps keeping the unit clean inside and working more efficiently (no dust on the coil fins means heat/cold is transferred better). Of course, the condensate line does not discharge during winter: it only creates condensate when working in cooling mode... :)
I am looking to take my pole barn and make a shop portion partitioned out, you mind letting me know what insulation you used? I am also in Michigan and looking for this solution to start my shop! Great information, and I looking forward to doing something as you did in this video as well once I get some walls up and everything.
I wonder that as well. I have one. 10x20 shop with barn loft roof, peak about 14’. Had 4 HVAC companies size and quote. All but one said 12,000 BTUs. The most experienced that took the most measurements and asked about my insulation said 9,000 would do, 12,000 might be okay, might lead to high humidity like Tyler is experiencing. Went with 12,000 do have a bit of rust spotting but only at end of shop farthest from the unit.

thanks for the info Tyler. Any idea what the annual electricity costs are to run the unit?

Yep. I use a mini split and dehumidifier in summer also. Work great!
Cool video, great information and a nice change in content.
So glad we replaced our central air with mini's. Esp, going to be nice this year as NG prices reach for the sky during the off-season.

Looking to get one soon. I spend about $800 a year on fuel and will definitely be more this year with the cost going way up!
What dehumidifier is that? Great review. 👍
Great informative video. Thanks.
Tyler, how many BTUs is you unit? I'm wondering how much over sized it is for your space. TIA

Regardless of when the wife calls, first priority is talking to her ;-)
Thanks for the video.
Thanks
$1700? That's steep. How many tons was that. A 12k btu has been around $900 lately.
Good
