I went to a daylight event and their RLCD looks great! Rested in natural light in the office and in direct sunlight outside. Hope you get your hands on it soon, Kit!
I dodged a bullet on this. i saw their announcement in hacker news and was blown away thinking it was 60fps eink so Immediatly placed an order. But then the red flags started piling up. The hippie vibe in all their promo and hands on videos with half naked people in yoga pants using a spectrometer on a book and comparing it to the daylight. The poor viewing angles and how dark it was under direct sunlight worried me so I started doing some research and found out it was just a RLCD. I felt completelly scammed so I canceled my order right away. After seeing your review Im super glad I did it and purchased a boox tab ultra instead
i think you've done well
I see that the website has a sort of pseudo-kickstarter model- they're selling them in batches, with the first ones supposedly shipping July 24th. As of this morning, batch 5 is for sale for November release, and they're taking $100 deposits for Jan 1, 2025. I wonder if each batch will be slightly different as they continue to refine the hardware and operating system?
I will say that it's pretty hopeful, the hype this thing generated, even if the device itself is lacking. I think this shows people are very much starting to want and look out for eye-friendly alternatives to OLEDs and the like, which could bode well for further advancements in this space going forward.
Really apreciate your point of view on the topic. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!
Great analysis Kit, I reached out to them as well. I agree with you that a lot of things have to be gotten right for it to truly compete.
Yeah, starting to see real reviews now, so we'll see, I don't think it's currently a competitor for eink.
Thanks for your input on this. Would be great to see a full review so hopefully they’re going to send you one.
I'm so glad you are talking about this interesting device! I'm quite sceptical. But I would love to hear your review of it. Hoping the send you the device! Btw the place was so beautiful wherever you were!
Definitely want to see you review this unit. I am excited that we have next generation devices coming (ASX2 and Remarkable3?).
Well, we have seen how wrong it can go when you think about Rabbit and the Human AI Pin, so waiting might be a good idea but… if enough people hold back then that might just kill it too.
Yes, we need reviews (real world use reviews) to make up our minds.
I like the idea of it as it gets around the problems that occur with e-ink displays… the delay when it refreshes the screen.
I don’t know if you’ve yet covered the Light Phone 3 but I’m very interested in getting one while it’s at half price right now.
There’s enough new features added to make it more viable for me over the 2 as it will come with a camera and a much better display (gone is the e-ink display) so I might put my money down on one. The only downside is it’s not out until early next year…
I see the Kindle Scribe is to get an update soon… 🏴
Looks very interesting but I expect the power consumption is going to be right up there with regular LED screens. Part of the original appeal for e-ink was the ultra low power consumption.
Yeah, agreed, but the Boox Super Refresh devices have poor battery life by eink standards.
It turns out that some of what you see on the Daylight website is still vapourware. A reviewer named Joshua Chang released a first look about the same time Kit posted this. A few days later, Joshua was advised that the unit he had filmed was an Oct. 2023 pre-production unit. Not only did the second, May 2024 unit he received have a different, gold-coloured back layer, but both units were still running Android. Their Sol OS apparently hasn't been released yet, or at least it wasn't available for review 12 days ago.
Yep, there is some way to go for them, and they are currently still shipping with Niagara launcher rather than their own skin on Android. I saw a good video from Mr Mobile this morning and he's had some hands on time with the device. Interesting.
Funny. I watched another UA-camr(Joshua Chang) talking about it and I wondered what you would think of it.
Cheers, yeah I just watched that one this morning as well.
To me it looks like it wants to solve the refresh rate problem of e-ink screens while sacrificing other good aspects of e-ink (such as viewing angles, low power usage and image retention that enables something like a transparent screensaver) and display definition. Not good enough.
Not good enough for who? Despite our enthusiasm for e-ink, not everyone likes it! People who prioritize better video or browser scrolling may gladly sacrifice image retention in order to have a monochrome 60Hz display that works well outdoors, for instance. As long as they are marketed in an ethical way, I think there’s room for a whole spectrum of devices and technologies.
waiting for your review
Fingers crossed!
Hello. Have E-Ink technologie reached its speed limits? Can future tablets be faster than Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C Pro? Or has the technology reached its peak?
I mean that there is some speed limit imposed by the physical structure of the technology itself. And beyond this limit, it doesn't matter what kind of powerful processor or memory you use, because the limits have already been reached.
I have the Hisense A9, which is unbelievably fast, even faster than Boox. What’s limiting e-ink devices is the reliance on Android.
In terms of speed, there could be some improvements still, as in the case of Carta 1300. It looks much faster on the new Kobo devices. There will be some barriers so 60fps may not be worth reaching. It's ok, since the market for E-ink is different from LCD.
Aside from speed, there are other ways for E-ink to improve on. Ghosting is one area for example. The ideal situation would be have no ghosting, without any full refresh. I was thinking whether it is possible for the particles to cycle around instead of straight top to bottom since there are multiple electrodes in each pixel to create grayscale. That could minimize collision for pure black -> pure white. The firmware and algorithm of E-ink could improve, and take into account the previous state, current state, and next state more intelligently. That could also speed up the "responsiveness" of e-ink, not necessarily the fps.
Color has just begun 2 years ago, and the available panels have some weaknesses compared to black/white. E-ink is currently uniform, so every pixel has to be exactly the same as the neighboring pixel. That limits the possibility to use RGB mixtures and avoid the need for 4 different particles in each cell for Gallery 3. There hasn't been any attempts to merge Kaleido color filter with Gallery 3 tech either. That could either solve Gallery 3's problems or brighten and increase saturation for Kaleido.
The front light could be thinner, as it is currently 0.5mm. It's making the Remarkable and Ratta Supernote hesitant to implement.
Since E-ink is reliant on one company, cost is prohibitively high. That's why E-ink tablets look expensive to new customers. If E-ink has as much attention and investment as LCD, costs would have gone way down.
Just wondering have u tried or reviewed tcl nxtpaper?
They're not worth reviewing as they switched to normal LCD screens while using the same product naming schemes. Quite deceptive imo.
@@yensteel I really hoped you watched this video in it's entirety or done some research on daylight dc1 before commenting
Not yet, but I think the Lenovo P12 is the same screen technology as the TCL.
I have and did a review on it on my channel. The phone one. My previous one was a hisense eink

I have an Aunt who lives way up north in Evanston. Beautiful place, but they get socked in at times during the winter. Not as bad as Canada, thankfully…
Sorry bud, it's a fleecing, like Rabbit. Not a new type of e-ink display but old modified transflective LCD with a matte display.
Looking at Joshua Chang's review of this device, it seems to have poor performance, it's heavy, have blurry text, a worse viewing angle, and obviously worse battery life. Completely unworthy, in my opinion.
Yeah, I didn't even think of the low resolution thing, that's a difficult one for reading when eink is now 300ppi at this size.
He did post a comment saying he got a new review unit that resolved the performance issues.
@@kallaway1 Some of them, at least. It’s still early days!
Any chance we get a Tab X Ultra or any 13.3 inch eink with good battery??
Still waiting here too. It's been over a year since the Tab X launched q q
I suspect that’s a bit of a catch-22. This is a rapidly-evolving technology, and consumers are price, size, and weight-sensitive. Durability is also a big concern. Would enough people pay $1,800 for a premium 13” device with a titanium skeleton, for instance? Is the profit margin attractive to manufacturers at that price point?
Don’t forget that Apple, Samsung, et al are still selling massive numbers of IP68 smartphones in that range- it must be much easier and more cost-effective to warehouse, transport and provide warranty support for smaller devices.
