  • 11 years before he became showrunner of Doctor Who Stephen Moffat first got his writing hands on the show in the form of a short two part comedy episode for the charity event Comic Relief.
Re-watching that episode its hard not to notice several things he re-used in his own era in charge.....

Looking forward to your week of Doctor Who videos! This was a great way to kick things off. It's so interesting to see the parallels between 'The Curse of the Fatal Death' and Moffat's work on the actual show, even if some could argue Moffat is just rehashing old ideas.

Doctor #13 in Curse of Fatal Death = Female (Lumney (sp?))
Doctor #13 in Doctor Who = Female (Whittaker)

Jim Broadbent as the 11th Doctor in this, is basically the same as Matt Smith.

You're the third person I've seen who calls this "Curse of the Fatal Death" instead of "The Curse of Fatal Death". Is this a Mandela Effect?

Derren Lodge - I’ve not seen World War Z but I had heard of his W.H.O role in it. I wonder if it was coincidence or the people involved knew of his casting in Doctor Who. :-D

Very good you pointed out a load stuff I'd never noticed or thought about but in my defence I haven't seen it since it first broadcast I remember thinking at the time Mr Atkinson would have made a good official doctor , anyway cracking video and big thumbs up sir.

Sounds like it’s time to give it a re-watch. The BBC has the whole thing in the Doctor Who UA-cam channel. Link is in the description :-)

I really like Curse of Fatal Death, Jonathan Pryce really hit the spot for me as the Master, I'm kind of sad we didn't get him as an official version of the character, I'd have loved to have seen more of him. Most of these points I had picked up on and remarked upon in the past, but I never noticed those reused lines, that caught me a bit off guard, very well spotted.

ohmydinosare - it would be interesting to see what Price would have done with the role in a non-comedy context.

It's certainly a fascinating glimpse into the future. Astonishingly, some fans at the time wanted this to be canon! So much so that Lawrence Miles, in The Gallifrey Chronicles, intimated that Rowan Atkinson was an alternative 9th Doctor, although that's open to debate. Also, this wasn't Moffat's first Doctor Who story: that honour goes to Continuity Errors, a short story published in Virgin's third Decalog anthology. It follows a similar path to 2010's A Christmas Carol. But you probably knew that.

Andrew Bowman - I didn’t know about that short story. Very interesting.

It also features Professor Candy, who was later seen as River Song's archaeology professor in - I think - Let's Kill Hitler. Although, I can't remember if he's identified as such in that episode.
