@@Kigoz4Life the new dust 2 was originally made in source 2 and then ported to source and csgo alyx's hands in half life alyx were originally a source 2 version of the csgo t's gloves sirocco was also made with source 2 assets and then ported to source and csgo the laziest valve has ever been with csgo was with, well... i actually don't recall anytime like that at all. even with cs' history, valve has never been lazy, you may argue that cs:cz was rushed and lazy, but it was actually a pretty good game, better single player mechanics, a sort of single player campaign, and a dust 2 that looks much better than source's dust 2 the laziest valve has ever been was with half life: source. you may also argue about artifact, but that wasn't even rushed or lazy, people just hated the dota card game aspect valve is probably the best gaming company out there, they control steam, own some of the greatest fps games out there, and are the entire reason many games are the way they are.
I think it’s because the map uses the same skybox as the current dust 2 map since they’re both in one map therefore it’s impossible to have a different skybox for the classic part of the map unless it’s a complete separate map like Philip’s one
I am that way myself but towards stuff Blizzard does with Warcraft III. Thing is that valve usually just does nothing of slightly underdelivers. Blizzard used to be great, and very VERY respectful with its treatment of older games like Starcraft 1 with its remaster....after doing nothing for years, but then they switched to openly disrespectful and mocking approach at last Blizzcon in regards for Warcraft III, its models and artists who made them, by mocking them and laughing at it, when with Starcraft remastered they were respectful like with some ancient relic. Revisionistic approach with their shitty remake is another issue. Which is another 180-turn from Sc1 remaster, they dont even remotely try to be faithful, which is terrible when we have direct example of them doing the remakes perfectly with Wc3HD asset pack for Starcraft 2.....its quite saddening..... So i am understaking task of fixing it for them myself
I love how people complain about so much when the game in near perfect in almost every way possible. You should be grateful that Valve has this amount of commitment for such an old game.
Devils advocate, but maybe Valve is happy doing things the way they are, and Phillip's bug videos, arent informing Valve of new bugs, but pointing them out to thousands of people, which is why they then get fixed. Most QA testers for games find issues that never get fixed due to time/money. Phillip is clearly talented and dedicated and seems like a nice dude, but I dont think valve needs him, if anything I think his role at valve should be community liaison and creator, where he makes content about CS development lore, talks about meta and gameplay, and is a trusted voice to bridge the community and Valves typical silence. Anyone can find bugs, but Phillip has CS passion more than most veterans.

Hey Philip, were you aware that the goldsrc sdk had a bug with ATI GPUs that prevented from interacting fully with the 3D view, making placing decals impossible?

Oyster actually there was a console command that fixes the decals issue, cant remember it too well tho, it is gl_polyoffset but Im not sure about the values, I think the default is 4 or something and is for opengl, and when using direct3d you had to change it to -0.01 or something like that to make the decals work properly again
The reason is because all decals has to be placed in a decals.wad - You cannot overwrite this file, as it would invalidate if you join servers that uses a different (or the default) version. This is a limitation in how GoldSrc mods work. Counter-Strike provides its own decals, which includes things like bomb target decals, etc.
I mean, valve did most of the work on the map, all hes done is change the lighting (meticulously and with passion), and retexture some things. Not that he didnt do great work that will be appreciated, but let's not downplay Valve's work either.

Was a map developer back in the 1.5 early 1.6 days. Helping fishy making awp_rooftops, back when it held around 18 players if I remember correctly. Had a lot of much fun developing that one with him and others from the [thc] clan lol. After I was somewhat proficient with Hammer, I decided to alter fy_iceworld for 1.5, where the ice was breakable in the middle. After playing many hours of hns, scoutzknivez & gun games, I put everything I knew into making fy_buzzkill and took as much feedback into development as I could. Just wanted to reminisce for a minute, thank you for what you do.

It's common to see techniques like the ones you used in this video go undocumented in the source community, forcing map makers to spend hours trying to fiddle with the map to figure things out. 3:00 When I went through college in 2013 we were told to use decals as sparingly as possible in UDK since they were projection mapped and "bogged down your run time if you used too many." We were limited to 10 per map. Anything else we wanted we had to work into the textures themselves.
I like how De_Dust, especially in Global Offensive, stays true to the original Dust theme and has better atmosphere than the Dust 2 map we got from Hidden Path.

Haha my first thought seeing the difference between the two versions was that the 1.6 version probably simulated fewer bounces. Glad to know that's actually a parameter that you can tweak.
And you need to make everything in the map bigger, making it so you can hide behind the crates instead of it being a headshot angle. Then increase the movement speed so rotation times aren't messed up.
I am baffled by the fact how you keep on improving Valve. I support you Philip and I wish you all the best. It would be great to see you improve the game directly in the future, as I would assume quite alot of people would agree with me on that.

It already has fixed textures (meaning you do not have to resize them) and you only need to tweak the logic on the bombsite triggers and the lighting.
Not sure if this was possible in 1.6 but I always played Half Life with "gl_texturemode gl_nearest" to get the blocky look (which I widely prefer) without the other limitations of software mode.
It is possible. Good news, it also works in source although some transparent textures won't display correctly. I replayed Need for Speed Underground 2 recently and I also prefer the lack of filtering there too.

The thing with decals in Goldsource was that in order to work properly they had to be in the decals.wad, which stored all the bullet holes, bloodstains, and any stock decals like stencil letters or the "die freeman" spraypaint from Half-Life. which meant your choices when making a map were to either replace the decals file that came with the game and hope that nobody else ever did, or paint the decals directly onto the texture as seen in dust2. It... wasn't the best system.

You forgot to add the details where you can be helped by a team mate to get on top of the pile of boxes in Cat, and also you could glitch a bit through the border of the wall and get a glance at Long.
It seems like learning how to edit multiple files at the same time would be a good investment. The sane way would be to hold shift, right click and open a command line window, but you could also highlight them all, open in Notepad++ and do a find and replace over all open files.
But what about wallbangs through 5-meter concrete walls?..

Green is the opposite color for magenta. Which valve's map is colorgraded into.
So... With the green sun you was spot on on this whole thing.
Dust 2 retro, the crates should break when C4 explodes, but Valve didn't used this.
I suggest you add the easter egg where dave jonston is credited for making dust 2 in ct spawn

It seems like learning how to edit multiple files at the same time would be a good investment. The sane way would be to hold shift, right click and open a command line window, but you could also highlight them all, open in Notepad++ and do a find and replace over all open files.
Valve needs to hire you immediately!!
