25th anniversary update: *hey there heard you wanted the old menu*
A casali made crossfire? I can't say I'm surprised, It's an amazingly made map, his map design came a long way since the masterpiece that is plutonia
Oh no, plutonia no not those words
Plutonia does have very nice looking jungle maps.
"masterpiece"
it is a masterpiece but closer to a hellhole
@@gudmansal3468 nah I’ve played harder mapsets
@@GuythatisocoolSothere ok yeah true but plutonia is closer to "it looks easy but actually really hard when you do try" and it has annoying stuff
I vaguely recall hopping on a server in HL1 that was running a version of Crossfire that restored the hidden room with the crossbow in it, but only made it accessible by interacting with a certain wall, which sank into the floor like a hidden door, and closed after a few seconds. I found like 4 people hitting the wall with their crowbars in there. Good times
It's also available in the Deathmatch:Source version of the map, though it's broken due to the infamous entity duplication glitch.
@@grande1900 you gotta love how jank Deathmatch Source is
Every server has that tbh
I’d ADORE if you would make a video on the rest of half life death match, it’s often over shadowed by the base game, and I think it needs more love…
Nice pfp Mr. Handler
I have so many fond memories of playing this instead of paying attention to classes in the computer lab, almost 2 decades after release because the computers were that bad. Whenever someone activated the air strike, the other players would make them the priority for the rest of the match, to "teach" them a lesson of course.
Wow they actually listened to you
Crossfire was the map that brought me to the half-life universe when I was 10 and now I'm almost 30, thank you for bringing back those memories.
Half-Life multiplayer was my first introduction to the game, my mind was blown when I first saw that this is actually a single player game, lol. Would definitely like to see the rest of maps, stalkyard, bounce were also fun to play
hldm is genuinely so much fun i wish there was a bigger playerbase for it
Seconded. I hate the godly gauss users though.
@@spike1000 weapon balance is bad
@@spike1000 you would hate the quake rocket launcher
As of the 25th anniversary update, half-life obliterated the all time player count with 30k concurrent players, now is a great time to hop on some deathmatch.
We just hit 30k players baby!!
Turkish and East-Europeans ppl are keeping the Half Life Multiplayer scene alive after 20+ years.
Also, the Barneys you can find on the landing pad half of the map have also been speculated to be a remnant of the game's cut co-op mode, which would have allowed you to play co-op missions on deathmatch maps. A good example of this is the unused entities on Subtransit which include HECU grunts and a script for them ambushing you near the rocket launcher pickup.
Edit: Just remembered that Marphy has a good video on this. ua-cam.com/video/T23wINs35lU/v-deo.html

Removing the Airstrike just feels wrong, it's a relic from a time when games cared more about the chaotic fun of early shooters rather than if it's fair and balanced, I mean hell if you're going to remove it instead just give it a longer wind up time or something, there's no harm in demanding every player get into the only safe spot on the map for that same chaotic fun in a different flavour or crammed nonsense after all :b
Wait the air strike is built into the map? I just thought the servers I played on all had a plugin
Your channel is a constant source of enjoyment in my life. Thank you.

The skybox glitch is because the original map didn’t specify one. If you don’t, it’ll default to the ‘desert’ sky or whatever it was from the previous map. You can see this on a few other maps
HLDM in crossfire feels like a never ending bar fight. That's the reason why I love HLDM
Guy makes a 15 minute essay on the map
Meanwhile me: haha, gauss lamp
Your videos are always so fun to watch.
Anyone who makes a Crossfire edit/remake that removes the airstrike is committing a crime against fun.
There's also a custom Call of Duty World at War zombie map that's a direct port of the HL:DM map Crossfire.
This has gotta be one of your best vids yet. Your editing and scripting skills have increased by a lot.
Lmao, I never saw that Black Mesa Xen gag during the editing streams. That got a really good laugh out of me, lol. Great video.
Finally this video is out! its cool i saw you edit this video on the HL MMOD stream, very cool
Dario Casali's own commentary on Crossfire seems to pretty comprehensively disprove that this was designed as a TDM map (although Valve may have played TDM on it). It seems like it was designed to be what it is: a funny, insane DM map with a wild gimmick.
just catching this in my recommended videos now, really interesting watch! when making maps for dusk's multiplayer mode, duskworld, i used the main battle area of crossfire as the inspiration for the initial structure of fusillade (fusillade even meaning "a discharge from a number of firearms", which could be interpreted as "crossfire" 😅) but one part of the original map i swear i didn't know about was the spiral staircase containing the crossbow, even though i made the same sort of structure in nearly the same location! i guess it was destined to be a playable feature in at least one form of the map lmao
Fantastic video, also that black mesa xen joke will never get old
I love how I was playing with ya on the other day and when I clicked on the video I immediately noticed that Crossfire is also on Open Fortress
The secret "Blue room" is one of the best things on the map for me, i can't even imagine it without the room. And now i hear that it was not intentional. I spent about 5% of all time in it. So many cool memories, so many friends made in it, so many times i got to full health and armor after being almost dead thanks to this room. Even the room itself, despite being so small, has a cool desing with some memorable parts like the dark spot ander the stairs, the crossbow attack spot, the lamp outside it that can kill everyone in it if you shoot it with gauss. This corner of the map could be the most boring part of the map, no one would go in it. But blue room made it one of the most memorable parts of the map
Fantastic memories of this one, used to play on LAN with a few friends... usually with the gravity turned right down to make the Gauss jumps even sillier. Sometimes I'd sneakily crack open the console and set the gravity to 1 while someone was mid jump so they'd be stuck mid-air during the airstrike :D
What, no casual throwaway reference to the Gman Squad and that bit where they camped the fort on Crossfire, gave themselves 'balanced' amounts of weapons and ammo, and spammed the shit out of the airstrike button because they removed the cover? :p
And I reached the end...
Binged the entire Cascade series and DAMN.
IT'S GREAT.
Can't wait for more~🎉
Cascade is exactly what I needed right now, since I just got into the original Half-Life and GoldSrc games, look forward to future entries!
I enjoyed the video, thanks! I'll have to give this a revisit. That was a fun map.
Top fragging on this map is the closest a person can reach to absolute zen
i still remember a time play this at internet cafe while thier internet cut off whole room was calling setup LAN room
such a well written little essay, i really like your dry and snarky humor
Holy cow this map. Oh my god its 2000 all over again
Forgot to mention you can actually Gauss jump above the airfield to avoid getting nuked. Though I dimly recall they fixed it in some later version.
The Stalkyard crew is like hold my crowbar punk.
I just now realized the song at the beginning is from Board James. (Lachlan Barclay - Crossfire 🤓)
It's an exceptionally small detail but I found it really interesting that the voice actor in that unused scientist line wasn't quite in character. The voice is just slightly off, and inconsistently so at that.
Really liked this! Nice to see some in depth coverage of this less appreciated part of Half-Life
That opening alone made the video worth it
This is the best video on your channel
Subbed because of this vid
Will you do more video of this style ?
More HLDM content is always appreciated!
Ppl should know that half life was the pinnacle of mp games early 2000s
I loved hl deathmatch but it isn't always very easy to find servers with people in them and on top of that I got banned on one of the more active servers just because the admin respawned next to me 3 times in a row so I'd always kill him again
Thanks for adding the crossfire song.
When I was in Black Mesa right before the XEN release on the non-steam version that like other Deathmatch maps I just going around the map seeing the map's astetics and designs and one of them is of course CROSSFIRE.
Coming from a Final Doom fan, everything Dario touches should be remembered as complete genius
i was searching for a video on this map like 3 months ago... And here it is... I LOVE NUKING, CANNONS AND SECRETS
I vividly remember playing the sierra release of HL1 when I was in elementary, and being able to open a secret door to the crossbow room in Crossfire, and the Barneys spawning in when the map first loaded.
You shoot it to open it.
I love how all Half Life UA-camrs are together on this
this is my favorite map in open fortress i never knew its origin but now the half life theming makes sense, on much more unrelated note i think it'd be cool if tf2 had some vagally black masa themed maps, made have some xen creatures as enemies like the skeletons in Halloween mode
Are you aware of the absolute fucking chaos some kind of connection to the half life universe in tf2 would cause?
9/10 times I’ve played that map the secret room is accessible by a craw space in the corner.
A ton of community revisions of crossfire enable it.
@@PurpleColonel yeee, most of my time on was playing opfor only a few years ago.
Please do the other maps! That sounds like such a great idea. Thanks for the content.
I've actually played this map as a team deathmatch with my classmates when I was young and it was tons of fun! When one team activated the button, the other scrambled to get in and it was usually very intense and in the end it often came down to very thriling 1v1 or 1v2
And let me tell you, the feeling when you are the last one standing in your team and against all odds beat the two remaining people on the other teams, just as the nuke explodes... yeah, that was something, it was like winning battle royale 15 years before battle royales were invented
Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
Also, that is one of my favourite maps in Half-Life. Should have specified: I mean the Topside Motorpool is one of my favourite Half-Life maps.
Back then when cs 1.6 isn't even out yet all of my neighbors played counter strike all the time and nothing else. I told them to try hldm. We ended up playing the crossfire and it was such a blast. No one else can beat me but sadly they're back to cstrike while i still playing hldm with bots sometimes. If only i can play this map with my neighbors again...
Dude just casually finds a haunted half-life server
This video was pretty good, but it's severely lacking any Ted from 60 Seconds!
They actually adjusted the default lighting and brought back WON menu. Nice.
Nostalgic, young life, emotive, 40 years over here and this map this game was my first multiplayer game experience. Love it!❤
3:13, In Half-Life Deathmatch Source this very button can be exploited via satchels so god damn good - you can effectivelly make the whole map unusable, even if you use tau cannon to escape the trigger zone which kills everyone inside it, because exploit makes that button spammable.
I still remember how some people were so good at it that you could only hear explosions repeating every quarter of a second.
Edit: oh nevermind, 9:06 - thats the leftovers of the spicy meal.
11:53 hearing a scientist have a voice crack is so weird and very jarring
It is funny that you would tell Valve to restore the WON menu.
Half-Life Deathmatch was always something I missed out on mainly because I was usually spending time playing the singleplayer and because the multiplayer is dead a lot of the time. Would love to try playing it again though.
Don't sleep on Opposing force deathmatch I've had some good times on there
use to love popping peeps through the wall with the gaus gun :)
Love the runoff map tbh... Also from my experience the secret crossbow room has a secret wall door, so its reachable
This map was amazingly fun to play in Action Half-Life Free-For-All Deathmatch mode as well. Just a total riot.
next episode: Why TF2 is a timeless classic
Can you do a CλSCADE episode on Half-Life MMod, a free steam mod for Half-Life 1. The only bad part is that at the start of Lambda Core in the Asassin room, there are now grunts, turrets, tripmines grunt-controlled turrets and extra asassins. The only part that balances the room is that vortigaunts spawn and take down some grunts.
Love the new release!!
Aw I love that room in MMod. While quite brutal and unforgiving it feels so fun and badass to find a good route, sneak around, and kill everyone off
What's the music at the start of the video? Is the toccata and fugue bit part of the rest of the song?
Hey! You are using very out of date screenshot of my version. But thanks for the mention. :)
Come on man you done me dirty. Fucking nostalgia.
Been playing it RTX, there's a couple servers and it's a completely cool new experience.
I do wish half-life deathmatch doesn't ONLY use crossfire
I wanna play other maps like snark_pit or lambda_bunker
lmao that whole team based thing where a team holds the bunker used to be exactly how me and my friend would play a few years back, we'd hop on a server with like 5 or 6 other people, and just take over the bunker and nobody could ever get us out
THEY JUST DON'T WORK!
True OGs know how long it took to montage this vid
Loved this map
The Crossfire Board Game music. There should be a listicle for songs too way too great for the things they were created for.
Such as:
-The Smashing Pumpkins original songs for _Batman and Robin_
-90's kid show themes that had the most hardcore power metal. Contenders such as the _Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Spider-Man: The Animated Series,_ and _Beast Wars_
-The original songs for _50 Shades of Grey_
-Hans Zimmer's scores for _Man of Steel,_ _Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice_ and _X-Men: Dark Phoenix._
-The soundtrack for _Deus Ex: Invisible War._
-The slappin' R&B song created for the commerical of "Mr. Sprigg's BBQ" restaurant.
-The Velcro Copyright Song.
This video got me to play a crossfire match and I was just saying "What the fuck?" and laughing my ass off the entire time.
Crossfire is my childhood so it will never go away
do you remember in the portal done half life source stream when i asked you about gmod 13 beta? so basically theres 3 version of gmod 13 beta, one from march, one from august, and latest is october, most of them are from the same year, 2012
11:20 Best part always
I want more like this:)
Very interesting!
Crossfire is my favourite mp map from Half-Life 1 and Park from OP4 deathmatch.
I need to play the Half-Life Deathmatch games more
bro when he said 5:57 in the morning, it was the same time in my clock also. Bruh!
Cool video, thanks.
I actually played this in 2006 as kid. Good old times
crossfire is such a fun map. I used to run a CS 1.5 Deathmatch server that had a plugin that made it possible to run HLDM maps. Guess which deathmatch map was the favourite? Fun notes: Long Jump worked, as did the big gun and the bomb.
More HL Deathmatch map analysis please!
me and some friends had a lan party once where you'd only score points if you were alone inside the fort and kill everyone else with the 'nuke'. I wish there was a dedicated mod with this kind of rules
Is there a cross-fire multiplayer server or something that i can play versus other people? Is this a thing? I remember being here, at this map, in this time-line, where nothing mattered, but a bunch of C4.
hey waiter! theres a whomobile in my purplecolonel video!
