I left the church 30 years ago, a Very lonely time, now we have channels like this just brilliant. This one is for the Christians to answer. Tomorrow I'm burying my Son 32 years old a sweet lovely young man, died unexpectedly, leaving 4 children 2,4,5,7 years. His wife is devastated. He wasn't a believer because I left the church when he was 2 years old. If I had of brain washed him he may of been. There are thousands of people who don't believe because they are not connected to church people. Along with what the video rightly explains, there is no love from a god, you certainly would not say there is if you could see these children and feel my pain. My brother who is a Christian probably prays for me since I left the church, my question is how has his prayer helped I was convinced before that the world looks like no god exists, now I have the worst proof that it does. I'm not mad at god he doesn't exist, my hope is some one may also realise and start to live life and not live to die. It's far better once your free from religion, life is short. Take care.
I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. I think of my own wife and kids and what would happen for them if i died unexpectedly and it breaks my heart. Thank you though for sharing here. I hope you continue to find peace.
Now who will want "Christians" to read their Holy Book without cherry picking... that will be dangerous even with the New Testament they won't do that....
Brandon I can't tell you how much I use to love the bible project channel. Their animations made the biblical stories more enjoyable because they provided a visual. I have long since said goodbye.
oh i get it! i'd kill to have the skill to do the animating they do on their bible videos. These AI shorts are fine too but i know people get sick of it, but man there bible episodes are really something.
I remember years ago when I was going to church, the whole part about "how long will you keep going between two different opinions?" It left me feeling so torn between having to choose between my secular friends and my Christian ones. Forcing myself to believe the Christian worldview, the way God always seemed to bring that scripture to mind when I was in a big dilemma or crossroads in life. Years later, I thankfully, found a Christian counselor who was much more compassionate. She said that being "double-minded" is a normal part of life. She comforted me.
Funny how some Christians claim to elevate others spiritually, but it feels more like they're lifting them just enough to bring them down. Reminds me of Tool’s lyrics, ‘I will work to elevate you just enough to bring you down.’ It’s like an endless cycle of control dressed up as compassion.
I love that you discussed the Baal story. Many evangelicals justify the genocides after the Exodus on the people being Baal worshippers, sacraficing thier children to Baal and tieing that to today's abortion debate to what they call, "the spirit of Baal". Problem is there was no spirit of Baal. If believed this story obviously shows Baal was fake so how does he have a spirit that's somehow controling people today?
The stuff I never saw before when I was a believer is now so eloquently explained by Brandon! Makes me sick frankly............... The foul and utter nonsense of "god" and trying to meld "good" with that cretin is beyond me now. How my brain ever allowed me to have such contradictions and to believe in trash.............man. It ruined my life and that is not a "poor me" statement, it literally ruined my life and has mostly ruined the lives of certain family members that still hold to it. Excellent job though with today's video!
Wow. It’s amazing how many little details slide into the background. Elijah slaughtering 450 men just as a final FU after the point was made is such an example of how vengeful and wrathful this God was. This would have been, as you point out, the perfect place to show compassion, forgiveness or justice. The story could have had the men fall to their knees to worship God and in returned be embraced and welcomed with loving arms by God - but no. He has Elijah slaughter them mercilessly. So much for that narrative.
it's a my-prophet-is-greater-than-yours story. It's amazing how much horror you simply don't see when you've read it and had it presented to you so often.
Nor does "thou shalt not murder" apply to any of the chosen people, when god tells them who to invade and slaughter and rape and enslave. Only the chosen people count as "people"-- an ethic that is so often embraced by Abrahamic religions today, and that has migrated into our secular world.i
Yes, if you're not indoctrinated in it from a young child, it's easy to see how awful it is. I often wondered at some of the gory stories, but then I had it "explained" to me.
I think Prophet of Zod did a video about the Bible Project and a video they did about Genesis. They change/portray differently a LOT of things in their video vs what the Bible actually says.
How is it that we believed this for so long and really smart people still do ? Are we really still just superstitious after all this time on this planet???
I sang Mendelssohn's _Elijah_ with a chorus some 15 years ago and heartily wished we'd sung the German version because a lot of the lyrics were simply vile.
Always wondered how believers know which stories are allegorical and which are literal. Nothing I ever saw reading the Bible clued me into the differences. Is there some unwritten rule we are to apply? 🤪

Hi I live in Nigeria recently my school has addressed a rumor that people are saying there’s no God but all our school just said is that god created us and we should go to our counselor and forget that question thankfully one of my mates are having questions about god and their scared but I don’t know how to help them deconstruct also when I asked several of my classmates how they know the Bible is true they said they don’t know that they just believe it I really need to bring people to their senses and help the, to stop believing in this book what should I do
Well without knowing your age or understanding your culture/environement, i'd say continue to learn more yourself. I and many like me have many resources on how to know the bible is indeed manmade. Just keep learning, and if honest and safe conversations can present themself with your classmates, then feel free to share what you are learning.
I don't have anything but words of encouragement for you, my friend. I've never been religious and have never had to deal with anything like what you're going through, so I have no advice. But you are brave, you are clever, you are questioning and looking for answers, so you are on a good path already. Stay strong. ❤️
The easiest thing to do is ask them to read the Bible from start to finish themselves and to not shy away from doubt. I deconstructed while in school too and it was because I’d been told all my life that God is all good, all powerful and all knowing but, when I actually read the book, nothing matched up to all I’d been told about God. Have casual conversations with your mates and, if they don’t want to listen, don’t force them.
As much as we can try and think we can, we can't change the minds of most people. Just accept them for where they are in their journey and focus on yourself.
Focus on yourself more. Don't push anything in a hurry. I got married as a Christian. I carried my doubt for many years. Knowing in my pit that it wasn't true, but still performing for many years. Right now my wife knows where I stand. We are in a battle for how we will raise our son in this regard. It's tough enough on that front for me. I don't have much energy for trying to convince anyone else about my conviction. I am also in Nigeria btw

Oh whoa the book of Elijah has got lots of Theological problems! the inconsistences with Jesus`s teachings , apparently you can test God?, and God can forgive Elijah without a blood sacrifice? etc I think it just may be the most damming Theological book in the Bible. Great exposing it Brandon, very entertaining and funny at times!
Wow, I guess that’s true. Elijah avoided the curse from the original sin, he neither died spiritually or physically. Unless he was literally reincarnated as John the Baptist, and then finally died? But Elijah said he was not John the Baptist? Man, whoever authored this religion is very confusing
What about all the other people suffering? This never seems to be on the mind of believers, the rest of humanity who's not part of the "blessings." Which is why I always tell them I'll take hell, I don't want to be part of their exclusive group, I'll stick with the mass of humanity, you know, since unlike Jesus, I like humans.* * for the most part, lol
God is so ALL loving that he will punish anyone who's not part of his plan . But remember , he LOVES you , he just doesnt show it ! Im sure ! 🤡 Dont mind that he's homophobic and racist , he loves everyone ! 🤡
Thiiiis! As a person who has never been a part of religion and doesn't really have a good understanding of what it's like to feel/think this way, it is so alarming for me to hear how little they care about their fellow man while claiming to care the most. It's literally dehumanizing others from your out group so that you don't feel bad about what happens to them and only care about your in group. It's honestly a little scary.
I once showed a Bible project video to a coworker who is Greek Orthodox. He immediately thought the interpretation of the text was incorrect. Says a lot about the Bible that even followers of it don't agree. Or that it can be twisted any way they please
Wow. What a great video! First I was a bit disappointed. Only 21 minutes 😅 But wow, although I know all your videos and learned so much from you already, there are always new things I hear, that amaze me greatly. I know many Christians who highly recommend the Bible Project and I saw several videos in the past. But never!! with the issues you pointed out. I was so gullible in the past. 🤦 Thank you for this enlightenment! And with regard to testing God, didn't Gideon test God with asking for the wet/dry animal skins? So yes, soooo inconsistent. Your videos let me recognize so many things! 👏👏
I keep asking Christians to definitively explain why if Jesus makes the rules, is baking a cake for our sins not as valid as dying for our sins... I never really get an answer. Usually just preaching, insults or both. No matter how they play it, the reality isn't that (in the Bible universe) Jesus died for our sins, he died because he felt like it for some reason. Perhaps to get attention? And he didn't even go to hell for eternity like what the real price of sin actually is. What gives?
I was in my fifties before I head that some branches of Christianity leave out substitutionary atonement-- the fancy theological name for "Jesus died for your sins". I had no idea that was even an option (though I was far past wanting to take it; I refused to become a communicant at age 11, because I knew on some level that I didn't want to sign on).
As much as I love the BP, your points regarding the story of elijah against theirs is sound, given that God is not portrayed with one consistent character and in many times contraditory to what many consider basic morals.
I respect a great many things about Mackie actually and enjoy their art and skill, but yes its unfortunate they are not willing to show all sides of this god as it is clearly stated.
How dare you, Brandon, to consistently point out how when there is an opportunity in the Bible to show mercy, there is instead bloodshed and torture. Didn’t you know you’re only supposed to read the good parts or sugar-coat all the genocide? 😂
I could have told them that leading with your anger brings about collateral damage and lack of control. God acts like an abusive, manipulative alcoholic.
What always makes me scratch my head about stories like these is that they describe a death and resurrection that precedes Jesus but have very different reasons why the widow’s son and Lazarus and that little girl in Acts (not to mention the zombie parade in one or more of the gospels that I can’t recall atm) were resurrected than they give for Jesus. I mean, death and (bodily) resurrection are pretty important themes in Christianity but the role these specific accounts play in the faith are very, very different. 5:56 Jesus taught using parables and allegedly predicted his death and resurrection through a metaphor of a specific temple where he was talking. I’m not sure why Christians insist on taking anything literally…
@@martinelzen5127 yeah they still can’t handle the fact that John 3:16 actually promises them that they won’t die, and “belief” in the context of that quote didn’t (yet) include a death and resurrection story because it hadn’t happened yet.
In my view, the nicest Christians are the ones who don't take anything literally, cherry-pick the loving bits in the Bible, and leave the rest alone. Which begs the question, why use that book in the first place?
Here are examples of all the "problematic" issues. I am going to watch this many times. For some reason, Elijah, and your insight, is hitting extra hard. Sick to my stomach.
Brandon, you’ve put your finger on God’s selectiveness in the story of Elijah and the widow - saving her and her son In the New Testament, I’ve always been bothered by the story of the massacre of the two-year old and younger male babies, that Jesus and his family escaped because Joseph was warned in a dream. Christians will justify this by saying, ‘well, Jesus had to survive to be a sacrifice for the world’. Really? The pain and grief of those OTHER families meant nothing?
What I find interesting is that we *could* make a case that even if God is all loving and all knowing and fair, God - having risen Elijah with their relationship and unique circumstances in mind - is not all powerful. If someone were to claim Jesus’s sacrifice was necessary for a greater plan and Elijah was foreshadowing such a potential pathway to escape death and judgement via relationship; the fact it’s said that “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and nobody could come to the father except through him,” shows that God was able to use some power to make that one case. Whether bound morally, or by some supernatural physical constraints, God was operating within bounds despite some sort of boundlessness. He could be VERY powerful, but not ALL powerful. And if the Bible anywhere states that God is all powerful, it would contradict with this particular circumstance. And thusly, the Bible would be an unreliable source of information. If the Bible doesn’t say God is all powerful, then there’s potential for this God to exist. But it’d also then have to contend with all the other mythologies with non-all-powerful deities.
Oh those hypocrites! It's also not the first time you caught them in the act of retelling a biblical story in a more advantageous light for that barbaric god Yahweh! I remember that Elijah was one of the stories that played a big part in my deconversion as a Catholic. We were taught that murder is a mortal sin where you'd lose salvation, and then you read about this psycho who kills 450 men unjustly as they had already acknowledged that Yahweh was the one true god, only to be literally taken up into heaven....man what a load of bullocks!
I think the Elijah work around that’ll maybe be used, would be that Elijah could have death defeated for him by God on the cross all the same, from the “eternal death” hell judgment aspect, and that the lack of physical death is a side issue. That Christ would still have to die to defeat eternal judgment “death,” or the second death. Of course there are other issues, like an all powerful god having hands tied to rules outside himself. Or another issue is, if physical death came into the world because of sin, and Christ died for Christian’s sins, then why do Christians still die? “… our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10).
It's like christianity is encompassed by infinite layers of goofiness and the more you examine and probe, the goofier you find it to be. Could THAT be the reason they want you to just accept everything on faith and not actual evidence or knowledge?
So if we cut up a bull and put it on an alter, called down the power of Yahweh, and nothing happens what is our next move? According to the Bible if a god doesn’t show up we can start joking that he is traveling or sleeping.
I wonder why this isn't a more frequent response to the problem of divine hiddenness 🤔 "why does God never show up?" - "well he has some urgent matters to attend to that require his full attention" 😏
How many people grew up reading Frank E. Perretti? He's like The Tom Clancy/Stephen King of The Christian Literature World. I grew up reading THIS PRESENT DARKNESS and PIERCING THE DARKNESS. Two of my all time favorite Christian books. Even as a little kid, while the books entertained me for hours when my parents would read them to me or I would read them to myself. In the back of my mind I would always ask myself why does GOD limit himself to depending on the prayers of his saints when it comes to thwarting the plans of Satan and his armies and their human agents? God doesn't need our prayers, but his Angel Armies, which VASTLY OUTNUMBER Satan's Armies of Fallen Angels. God's Angel Armies CAN'T DO ANYTHING WITHOUT THE PRAYERS OF CHRISTIANS And more often than not God's plans are thwarted and Satan triumphs. IT'S HORRIBLY INEFFICIENT AND STUPID that God if he exists chooses to operate this way when he doesn't have to.
Oh buddy. I heard the followup on the prophets being killed by the sword but it was not good. It was a christian nationalist pastor. He pulled his actual sword out and said that he was waiting for god to tell him to do the same to his enemies... By that he meant liberals or anyone who didn't agree with him... and he was swinging the sword around while he said it. This was a few months ago at an event I played drums for.
All this would be so unnessesary if Yahwehists simply acknowlege the fact that while he claims to be a great guy, he's more of a, well, let's just say Loki kind of god.

It's 'almost' like the gauntlet of ghostwriters were in different moods when it was their turn adding to their mythology. 🤔
ha!
I am so sorry for the great pain you're having to endure.

Excellent job though with today's video!
lifes not over yet! but i hear you man. It stole so much time and so much more from so many of us.
Right! pretty darn telling.
I guess "thou shall not murder" doesn't apply to some prophets.
it's a my-prophet-is-greater-than-yours story.

The more I became a dedicated bible reader when I used to be a Christian, the more I became the God of the Old Testament trying to rationalize his actions.
If one is willing to be honest and not use the "new covenant" as a copout, it becomes increasingly hard to justify this god the more you read.

Super looking forward to your conversation with Britt Harltey. 😁

Effectively 'God' is just as capricious as any Greek or Roman deity.
Boom! Let's go!
THanks!
Whoo hoo 🙌🏼🎉
Howdy!
How dare you, Brandon, to consistently point out how when there is an opportunity in the Bible to show mercy, there is instead bloodshed and torture. Didn’t you know you’re only supposed to read the good parts or sugar-coat all the genocide? 😂
oh damnit, messed up again!

Be careful! Don't threaten their "resurrection guarantee"! ;-)
Brandon, you’ve put your finger on God’s selectiveness in the story of Elijah and the widow - saving her and her son
In the New Testament, I’ve always been bothered by the story of the massacre of the two-year old and younger male babies, that Jesus and his family escaped because Joseph was warned in a dream. Christians will justify this by saying, ‘well, Jesus had to survive to be a sacrifice for the world’.
Really? The pain and grief of those OTHER families meant nothing?
I did a video on the massacre of the innocents that you are referring to, and the excuses in the comments and reaction videos were wild!
@yacaattwood2421 And obviously, god, being omnipotent, could easily have provided a way to save baby jesus without slaughtering other children.
Never knew that Elijah killed so many people! Catholic School taught a familiarly sanitized version as well. Thanks again!!
You go boy!!
Going! thanks for watching.

I especially loved this vid! 🤘🏻 Exposing the lies, cherrypicking n hypocrisy from The Bible Project! 💯
Might have to become a series.
Oh those hypocrites! It's also not the first time you caught them in the act of retelling a biblical story in a more advantageous light for that barbaric god Yahweh! I remember that Elijah was one of the stories that played a big part in my deconversion as a Catholic. We were taught that murder is a mortal sin where you'd lose salvation, and then you read about this psycho who kills 450 men unjustly as they had already acknowledged that Yahweh was the one true god, only to be literally taken up into heaven....man what a load of bullocks!
utter chaos!
We need more videos like this, which highlight how Christianity is based on acute cherry-picking and no follower bothers reading the rest
I'll keep trying!
It's like christianity is encompassed by infinite layers of goofiness and the more you examine and probe, the goofier you find it to be. Could THAT be the reason they want you to just accept everything on faith and not actual evidence or knowledge?

God's Angel Armies CAN'T DO ANYTHING WITHOUT THE PRAYERS OF CHRISTIANS And more often than not God's plans are thwarted and Satan triumphs.
