      Yes, I agree. These are my favorites: where the Bible does your job for you. Great run down, Brandon! Keep sticking to your Bible context because so many other videos surrounding Chrisitianity don't utilize the text itself and I think that makes their cases be seen as "weak" when it could easily be a slam dunk.

      Let's not forget the fact that when you use verses against them they'll constantly say things like "that verse is being used out of context" and "It means something that's up to God not us". I think the Christian mindset, and the Bible Project mindset is that God is a life giver to those that are following him or "on his side". For everyone else, it's tough luck. And that is exactly the Christian attitude. When you walk away from Christianity, watch all your friends and family wait with baited breath for things to start going badly in your life. And guess what? When they don't and you are thriving, they "reason" their way out of that too.

Elijah slaughtering 450 men just as a final FU after the point was made is such an example of how vengeful and wrathful this God was. This would have been, as you point out, the perfect place to show compassion, forgiveness or justice. The story could have had the men fall to their knees to worship God and in returned be embraced and welcomed with loving arms by God - but no. He has Elijah slaughter them mercilessly. So much for that narrative.

I deconstructed while in school too and it was because I’d been told all my life that God is all good, all powerful and all knowing but, when I actually read the book, nothing matched up to all I’d been told about God. What always makes me scratch my head about stories like these is that they describe a death and resurrection that precedes Jesus but have very different reasons why the widow’s son and Lazarus and that little girl in Acts (not to mention the zombie parade in one or more of the gospels that I can’t recall atm) were resurrected than they give for Jesus.
    I mean, death and (bodily) resurrection are pretty important themes in Christianity but the role these specific accounts play in the faith are very, very different.
    5:56 Jesus taught using parables and allegedly predicted his death and resurrection through a metaphor of a specific temple where he was talking. I’m not sure why Christians insist on taking anything literally…

Usually just preaching, insults or both. No matter how they play it, the reality isn't that (in the Bible universe) Jesus died for our sins, he died because he felt like it for some reason. Perhaps to get attention? And he didn't even go to hell for eternity like what the real price of sin actually is. What gives?

    What I find interesting is that we *could* make a case that even if God is all loving and all knowing and fair, God - having risen Elijah with their relationship and unique circumstances in mind - is not all powerful. If someone were to claim Jesus’s sacrifice was necessary for a greater plan and Elijah was foreshadowing such a potential pathway to escape death and judgement via relationship; the fact it’s said that “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and nobody could come to the father except through him,” shows that God was able to use some power to make that one case. Whether bound morally, or by some supernatural physical constraints, God was operating within bounds despite some sort of boundlessness. He could be VERY powerful, but not ALL powerful.
    And if the Bible anywhere states that God is all powerful, it would contradict with this particular circumstance. And thusly, the Bible would be an unreliable source of information. If the Bible doesn’t say God is all powerful, then there’s potential for this God to exist. But it’d also then have to contend with all the other mythologies with non-all-powerful deities.

    Re: false gods and the showdown on Mt. Carmel. It would be interesting if you would do a video on the Bible and religious freedom. I don't think that the Bible supports the kind of religious freedom we have here in the United States; in fact, I think Elijah and the other prophets would be absolutely appalled at the concept. On a similar note: the idea of Jesus being king and how that relates to a country that threw off its king and hasn't had one since. I'd say that the idea of modern kingship (King Charles, etc.) is very different than how kings historically operated.

    • @georgekatkins
      @georgekatkins Годину тому

      Regarding the Bible and religious freedom, one cannot expect a foundational religious gospel to give equal time or a hall pass to other religions, right? You won't find that in other religious "gospels", either. These days, most mainstream religious leaders of different faiths publicly play nice with each other and hold conferences. That is certainly good PR on one hand, but I think it is also a sincere attempt by them to discourage people from using their own religion as an excuse to kill a other people (as Elijah did). Unfortunately, a lot of people still don't seem to be getting the point.
      How modern kings/monarchies function today depends on which country you look at. There are absolute monarchies in Brunei, Jordan, and The Vatican, though not all in the same way.

I bet in about 50 years AI is that advanced that it can generate all sorts of realistic epxeriences with the divine. How are people able tell the difference between one and the other? And if they cant, what makes them so sure when they hear voices now, or have visions and dreams now, its not "fake news"?
