I love your Putah creek videos! You are probably the only person on UA-cam who consistently posts on Putah. I was thinking of trying this summer because of the low crowds but I was hesitant to go because of the flows combined with the fact the I suck at Putah but I think I’ll go after watching this video. Thanks for keeping us updated on the creek and good luck next time you fish it.
Everyone sucks at Putah at least some of the time! The only way to get better is to suck and suck and keep on sucking until you don't suck anymore. And then you'll still suck sometimes. That all sounded way dirtier than I thought it would, but you know what I mean. Good luck and please let me know how it goes!
@@abushinthewoods Just got out today. Wish I stayed later in the afternoon, but I only got a little one on the swing at the end of the drift that popped off. The water has cleared up and I saw quite a few fish in the flat water, including some large fish holding near the shore. I would’ve fished more but my tippet spools decided to run out all in unison. Will be tying up some small (size 20-22) wd-40s because I flipped a few rocks and they were absolutely covered in tiny BWO nymphs.

Hey Bushy, thanks! I was there on the 20th also, sorry I did not see you. Got skunked except for the last of the day, at the south end, where I hooked into a SLAB that broke me off after about 10 seconds 😪 Did manage to bring back a good deal poison oak however 😱😭. Totally agree that the place is growing like crazy!
Went back this past Sunday and brought in 6, mostly on a Perdigon and a Black Zebra midge. Flows had dropped below 400, which was great!

Can you show your setup I have never fly fished using weights? Thanks sean
I don't use split shot, but I do use (heavy) weighted nymphs. Depending on flows, I'll use 1 to 3 nymphs, usually about 1 to 2 feet apart. The bottom will be anywhere from a 3.5 to 5.5 mm tungsten bead. The others will then be whatever I feel like using because I'll enough weight on the bottom fly to pull the entire rig tight. If I'm going tight line I'll usually have about 5 feet of tippet from my sighter (but again this has to vary with flows). Please let me know if that doesn't make sense and I'll try to figure out a way to show a video or photo or something.

Yeah, she is a harsh and fickle mistress, but I can't quit her. But...if I had other good water less than an hour and a half from my house I'd probably dump her ass in a NY minute.
Brought a machete past two trips. Best Putah Creek accessory there is.

Thanks for the video. Having never fished Putah, I was wondering what a good day (in terms of numbers of fish caught) on Putah looks like.
The middle of the bell curve seems to be about 2 fish/hour. Hugely dependent on flows and maybe pressure. For example, one year I was there each day there was a playoff game during football season and it was great. The one weekend there wasn't a game it was no good. True story. Totally anecdotal evidence, I know, but it's my theory.

You can and people certainly do--it can get busy with swimmers on weekends in the Summer. I think the answer to your second question depends on what you mean by "nearby". I don't now if the immediate vicinity of Winters other than Berryessa--which is actually pretty great for swimming and boating--, but there are lots of awesome swimming holes on the Yuba and the Bear, but those are a good hour or so from Putah. There's also the ocean, but that's also a haul from Putah.
Thank you! I just moved here, so driving is no issue for me. I live near the creek and definitelly plan on floating down from Yuba! So far I've been having a great time in Auburn and Colfax, though it is a little bit of a drive from Winters/Davis@@abushinthewoods
@@BigV424 Those are great spots. There's a book called Swimming Holes of California or some such. Lots of those spots will be crowded on hot weekends, but it's a good resource in that at least gives you a sense of where to start your search. Good luck and enjoy!
Where can I access the creek? I’ll be driving from Woodland, Ca.
Get on 128 going west. Go through Winters toward Lake Solano staying on 128 the entire time. Just past Lake Solano, you'll see the creek on your left. You'll first come to a dirt lot on your left, then a paved lot almost right after (but also on the left). There's good water a short walk from either lot, but you can also keep going, paralleling the creek the whole time. You'll pass a couple more lots on the left, along with a bunch of pull outs. Eventually you'll pass the RV park and go over the bridge over the creek. Just past the bridge you can park in the last lot on the left or the only lot on the right and that's the end of the fishable portion. Any of the lots and most of the pullouts will give you access--just follow the trails to a spot that looks good. Good luck, and please let me know how it goes.

using indicator is not fly fishing
Well, it's fishing using flies (many of which I tied myself), on a rod designed to cast a fly line and equipped with said fly line, so I'm going to say it is in fact fly fishing. In my book, even though it may not be traditional fly fishing, i.e., casting a dry fly only (and even more traditionally upstream to a rising fish if you really want to get traditional about it), but it counts. Just like it would if I were using a dry dropper in which the dry fly is acting like an indicator. That is all waaaay different to me than using bait, but also way (with fewer "a"s) than casting a spoon or a lure or something with a rod designed to cast a heavy lure on fishing line, as opposed to fly line. All of that said, this is something about which reasonable people can, and do, disagree.
