- This is an instructional video for tying three of the flies with which I've had the most success fly fishing Putah Creek, including some variations on tying them. I hope you enjoy it and it helps you succeed at the Creek and on other water (I'm sure they'll work great there too).
Just started fly tying been fishing creek for long time but I’m still learning and will try your bigger flies mostly fish tight line thanks !your videos are awesome!

Grew up fishing Putah Creek & fly fishing & tying 40 + years,standard rule believe 1/2 what you hear & you'll get the truth,now living in Oregon hear it all the time you got to use this or that,they work no denying it,but if I give you a snickers bar every day pretty soon,you get tired of it & want something different,trout aren't stupid by any means,tight lines & bent rods 🤙
I've only been fly fishing for about 2.5 years and have been told that Putah is a size 18/20/22 fly river only. I've had only limited success there. Wait, I've successfully pierced my waders, gotten poison oak and come away with some ticks. I've had success with all the flies you're tying at other rivers. It's so refreshing to know that I can use all the flies in my box and maybe actually be able to thread the tippet because the eye isn't microscopic. Thanks for sharing your expertise!!! Ha! Sounds like you've been having the true Putah experience! Nettles are next. How many flies have you given to the trees? I'll be interested to see how you doing if you focused on the 12/14/16/18 range. Please let me know. I'm wondering if you'll be naturally using more weight and that will have a positive impact as well. Plus, those tiny files are just awful. I tied a size 20 WD-40 the other night just to see if it worked. I dropped it MOVING IT FROM THE VISE TO MY BOX and it was gone. Couldn't find it for the life of me. It will either end up in my vacuum or my foot. I can't live my life like that.
I think at Putah creek people rely too much on small flies and imitative patterns and forget that perfect presentation is more important. After 5 tries at Putah, I finally got into some fish only after adding a FOURTH split shot and a tungsten fly.
Yeah, it's kind of an interesting self-fulfilling prophesy. Everyone says it's so hard and you have to use tiny flies, so then everyone uses tiny files that aren't weighted enough and then it's really hard. I also think people avoid using enough weight because it's so snaggy. I always roll my eyes a bit at "don't be afraid to loose flies" because it's a thing guys that sell flies like to say, but it's still true. Particularly so at Putah where the runs tend to be short and there are often deep pockets within those runs that you have to get down into. You have to get down fast and you are going to loose flies. Lots of them. And yes, IMHO, presentation is way more important than fly selection
You don’t need to get down. I’ve had 8-10lb fish come up for some egg patterns. I think it’s a mixture of either or.
@@robertmathews3570 Well, but doesn't it depend on conditions? I mean, if you *always* had to get deep then dry fly fishing wouldn't be a thing. But if the fish are holding at the bottom of a pool, especially if it's a short, fast, deep pool, sometimes you need a bomb to get down to them--particularly if it's cold and they aren't going to move so you basically got to bounce it off their face.
