Very good tutorial Dan. Fly fishing has really evolved since I started 50 years ago. Even casting techniques have changed. You have condensed the basics for newbies and provided some reminders for us "set in our ways" older dudes. Your channel rocks!

I fish from a yak with my dad, learned because my uncle got into fly tying and fishing and had a lot of fun showing my dad. After i got my pole i have fallen in love with fly fishing.
I just realized what you were actually referring to...you can use just a small piece of yarn or cut the shank off of an old fly and use that when practicing
That is just part of fly fishing I'm afraid - try not to 'yank' the line, easy to damage your expensive investment (fly line). They do make stripping baskets to keep that from happening...there are just bulky.
good instructions but what is with the typing noise when talking. What is it that you want me to hear? Talking and typing at the same time. One piece of information at a time please or if 2 types of info is good then how about 3, 4, or 5?
I’m a complete beginner I’ve been studying different fly fishermen channels and you are by far my favorite. You’ve been so informative and you’re cool about it you make it so easy to follow!
Thanks for this video man. I've been a baitcaster/spinner fisherman my entire life. The fly fishing bug got ahold of me and I picked up my first setup yesterday. Been absorbing UA-cam videos like crazy. Definitely one of the better ones! And great catch btw. This is the way.
Just keep practicing man. It'll click one day. Keep it simple and don't chase perfection. Work on your short game and positioning and then build up to more distance casting as your confidence increases. You got this.
Yep! And I've commented about this on other videos, myself. A big BIG tip is to get over the "whip". As spinners, we're used to using speed and strength to load the rod and sent it way out there (at least I was). It's about going nice and easy. I forced myself to slow down and relax with it. And wait for that line to load behind you. The line itself will carry the fly out, not your force. In my opinion, it feels like the physics really takes place between your rod and fly line itself, and not you trying to launch a lure 80 feet. Keep it up. I literally put all my gear down and exclusively fly fished for a week and the progress is beautiful
Thanks for mentioning the need for a full rod length of floating line. As a total newbie, I was surprised to see how few tutorials even mention that part. Kind of teaching myself at first until I get out with some buddies in a few weeks.
Having a quality fly rod is important for improving your cast…so I built one! Everything in a top end fly rod for half the price. Check them out here: fishonrods.com/ Quality fly line matters too: www.cortlandline.com/FLYFISHDAN
You typically want to have a full length of floating line past the tip of your rod - your entire tapered leader should be in the water prior to picking up and casting. Hope that helps!
Friends gave me a fly fishing set up for my birthday a couple of weeks ago, been practising but havent grasped it keen to put your tips into practice from australia
Thanks Dan. I’m definitely getting better but I feel like I still false cast too much. I need to get that double haul mastered. As always thanks for the tips.
My dad was an amazing caster, really took for granted what he could have taught me but like fathers and son throughout history… if he thought it was cool it must be BOGUS! Oh well maybe in the next life I’ll fly fish with Dad
pretty good man, like your vid,i just started with it,and im not doing correct yet,i had a rotary cuff tear years ago and never got fix,so flying rod casting is painfull but i want to learn good, like it.
Please include that breaking your wrist when cast a fly rod, even though you do it, is NOT the proper technique. 44 years of fly fishing experience, and 10 years of teaching.. breaking the wrist is the #1 issue with most peoples line not laying out flat. USING THE WRIST is not the way to teach beginners. I understand it works for you. However 90% of new casters learn horrible muscle memory by breaking their wrist during their cast. 10 & 2 is absolutely the worst teaching tool in fly casting. Im not trying to bash you. I just spend over 60 days a summer, breaking novices bad habits. Breaking the wrist is one of the hardest to break. Watch Joan Wulff cast. It is truly a work of art. :)
Thank you for sharing your perspective, it's evident that you possess a wealth of experience and knowledge in the world of casting, as do I. Your emphasis on proper wrist positioning and the potential pitfalls of breaking the wrist during casting certainly resonates with your many years of teaching others to fly cast. While I understand your concerns about wrist technique, I'd like to respectfully offer a different point of view. It's true that some individuals may inadvertently develop bad habits if not guided properly, especially when it comes to *significant* wrist movement. However, there might be situations where controlled wrist action can be effective, particularly in adjusting for varying casting conditions, distances and the individual angler. There isn't a perfect cast...I move my wrist slightly, as does my elbow, shoulder and body - works very well for me and I catch fish consistently, even the ones rising 80 feet away. With that being said, I will include that point in future videos, thank you for your feedback here. Regarding the "10 & 2" teaching technique, you've seen The River Runs Through it right? This is the most effective 'mental discipline' to teach someone new - otherwise, their arc will resemble something like 8 & 4. I respectfully disagree with you here. As the new fly angler grows in the sport, so will their technique increasing/decreasing the arc with distance. It's evident that your insights stem from your dedication to improving the fly fishing experience for everyone, as our mine. Let's continue to celebrate the diversity of approaches in teaching and casting techniques that contribute to the rich tapestry of the fly fishing community. Cheers and FISH-ON!!
Good job. I was skeptical I've come across too many pretentious, blowhard fly fishing pedants who pretend it's as complex as nuclear physics Good introduction without any excessive jargon or nonsense Thumbs up!
Excellent presentation! Well explained. Dan, do you fish with other techniques besides fly fishing? I am asking about using spin reel, bait casting or closed reel fishing? Was told that one may catch more fish and a lot more easily using these other techniques……that fly fishing was too slow and too difficult a technique (I.e. getting line caught in trees often. Does not happen with the other techniques.). Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you.
Thanks! I used a spinning rod from about age 3 to 16...once I moved to fly fishing, I've never looked back. If you put some time into learning, it far more fulfilling than any other type of fishing. Cheers!
New to fly fishing and yup having a few issues with my casting, way too many false casts. I’m going to follow your tips and hopefully improve. Thanks from England.
Bless you holy fuck. I been kinda raw dawging the fly fishing and while successful I needed some help getting that line out further. Went right out to the driveway to test out the techniques you showed and I have improved tremendously in a single false cast😄.
What you are doing is water loading, and that is actually easier than trying to false cast a bunch. Once you start to perfect your personal cast, you'll only false cast maybe once or twice during any fly cast. Cheers!
New fly rod owner here- thank you for the tips. Had no idea what the hell false casting even was after a couple videos watched lol you explained it quick. Thank you

Man I’m new to fly fishing and I feel like I have to false cast to much to slowly get some line out. Been practicing shooting line but can figure it out.
I would watch your backcast - be sure that it extends all the way behind you before bringing it forward. It's likely that you are bringing the fly rod forward too soon in your cast. Give that a try and I hope it helps!
I tried these suggestions and they worked. Mostly because they are common sense. Helped to look at the back cast, which I had never tried. It isn't that complicated when you get the idea.
Crazy thing about UA-cam - the type clicking and feedback (though not always positive) I think helped this video with it's reach (more people interacting) But, I've taken that feature out of any new vids, I can see how it would be annoying to listen to
I like to false cast a few times to better aim my distance I want to place my fly. I like to work sideways with the floats and just shooting a bunch of line out is not going to get my fly to land at the exact distance my target is. So false casting and slowly feeding line out with each cast works best for me on rivers with precise landing zones.
Fantastic video! I've been struggling with my cast and what I was missing was managing the fly line by holding it with my non-casting hand. I have been adding line with my line hand and letting my casting hand manage the line with my index finger when casting. Can't wait to give these tricks a try.
Typically, when that happens, it's due to using light leader for the bigger streamers. I would use at least 3x for streamer fishing to avoid the snap off during a cast (happens to me too!)

Sometimes, it just takes the right version to click I guess. I feel I'll be pretty decent off the go with the amount of time I've spent going to UA-cam Fly Fishing school. Great job man!

I wish I could do this but Everytime I cast, my flys hit the grass behind me and then I lose my flies... it's too frustrating

Sometimes, it just takes the right version to click I guess. I feel I'll be pretty decent off the go with the amount of time I've spent going to UA-cam Fly Fishing school. Great job man!
Thanks, I appreciate that. You are going to love fly fishing - Thanks for being a part of my channel!
Going on first trip soon and this is first how-to video I've watched. Catching that fish sure adds to your credibility. Will be following. Wish me luck in Alaska.
