I’m a complete beginner I’ve been studying different fly fishermen channels and you are by far my favorite. You’ve been so informative and you’re cool about it you make it so easy to follow!
Thanks for this video man. I've been a baitcaster/spinner fisherman my entire life. The fly fishing bug got ahold of me and I picked up my first setup yesterday. Been absorbing UA-cam videos like crazy. Definitely one of the better ones! And great catch btw. This is the way.
Very good tutorial Dan. Fly fishing has really evolved since I started 50 years ago. Even casting techniques have changed. You have condensed the basics for newbies and provided some reminders for us "set in our ways" older dudes. Your channel rocks!
Wanting to get into Fly fishing and been watching beginner casting videos for days and some that was 30 mins long and never got to the point, would also assume the people watching knew how much line to pull out etc. you got to the point and actually went step by step. Just a great video easy to follow. Some people just don’t know how to teach others. You did so good. Thank you! New sub!
Thanks for mentioning the need for a full rod length of floating line. As a total newbie, I was surprised to see how few tutorials even mention that part. Kind of teaching myself at first until I get out with some buddies in a few weeks.
New fly rod owner here- thank you for the tips. Had no idea what the hell false casting even was after a couple videos watched lol you explained it quick. Thank you

I haven’t been FLY fishing in almost 30 years, thought it would be like riding a bike, but…NO. Thanks for the awesome quick guide, I just had to get back to the basics! I’ll watch your other vids now, I have two weeks till my upcoming trip. Tight lines y’all!
From the comments, it looks like I stumbled across the best vids first! Thanks! Step-Dad just got me my first fly rod and we are headed out to fish for sockeye on the Klutina in an hour. Never touched one before so I'll be cramming your videos between now and then. Wish me luck!
About to open a pkg this week with my first fly rod kit - Been watching fly stuff for couple months. This is by far, the best quicky on getting the line out, one of the things I was most confused about. I've had all the other basics drilled into my brain it's become instinctive. 10 and 2, that's not hard to remember as I'll date myself, those numbers were also important in our youth for another reason in high school. This filled in some big holes. I'm sure there's other great ones out there, but I just haven't seen them. Learned a lot across a broad range, but not getting the line out, the way you explained it. Sometimes, it just takes the right version to click I guess. I feel I'll be pretty decent off the go with the amount of time I've spent going to UA-cam Fly Fishing school. Great job man!
Oh my gosh I tried casting fly fishing rod today for the first time, i made like 5 mistakes in every single cast, this video made my life so much easier, thank you buddy
I fish from a yak with my dad, learned because my uncle got into fly tying and fishing and had a lot of fun showing my dad. After i got my pole i have fallen in love with fly fishing.
New to fly fishing it took me years to perfect a bass bait casting reel now to a new adventure that will take me just as long or longer to fly cast and reel... I welcome the challenge thank you for your video.
Nice drone shot bro. I'm 52, & just bought my 1st fly rod. It's a beginner set, but, no use spending a ton of money, until I can perfect my technique. Thanks for the instructions. I leave tomorrow for brookies, so I'm hoping to be able to use my rod efficiently.
I enjoyed your video. I like the actual demonstration - that's how I learn. Beautiful fish at the end was a pleasant surprise. Thanks and I'll tune in for more!😊
Im here to thank you man, I was on my very first time with fly rod and you help me so much that i received four rainbow trout on first trip ! If you will be in Sweden, I'm own you a beer 🍺
Going on first trip soon and this is first how-to video I've watched. Catching that fish sure adds to your credibility. Will be following. Wish me luck in Alaska.
I tried these suggestions and they worked. Mostly because they are common sense. Helped to look at the back cast, which I had never tried. It isn't that complicated when you get the idea.

@@FlyFishDan Dan! Very nice video , this morning I went to the river to do a bit of fly casting I hadn’t picked up a fly rod in years , I found it felt like my main line was sticky to slid through the runners , best I could do maybe15-20 feet and it was labouring work to get it there with lots of false cats , I’m thinking maybe some Vaseline on the runners and see if that resolves the line problem other than that yes I need practice.👍
New to fly fishing and yup having a few issues with my casting, way too many false casts. I’m going to follow your tips and hopefully improve. Thanks from England.
Fantastic video! I've been struggling with my cast and what I was missing was managing the fly line by holding it with my non-casting hand. I have been adding line with my line hand and letting my casting hand manage the line with my index finger when casting. Can't wait to give these tricks a try.
Thanks, well explained. I've been doing this for as long as you but didn't really realize what I was doing right, never thought about what I had learned through the years. Now it's time to teach my grandkids. So this will help a lot. hahahahahahah. Good job, sir.
Excellent presentation! Well explained. Dan, do you fish with other techniques besides fly fishing? I am asking about using spin reel, bait casting or closed reel fishing? Was told that one may catch more fish and a lot more easily using these other techniques……that fly fishing was too slow and too difficult a technique (I.e. getting line caught in trees often. Does not happen with the other techniques.). Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you.
Thanks! I used a spinning rod from about age 3 to 16...once I moved to fly fishing, I've never looked back. If you put some time into learning, it far more fulfilling than any other type of fishing. Cheers!
my mother and i want to learn how to cast a fly line. i bought a set of poles and got them set up, but we have troubles casting out.. hopefully this video will help us better
Thanks Dan. I’m definitely getting better but I feel like I still false cast too much. I need to get that double haul mastered. As always thanks for the tips.

That is just part of fly fishing I'm afraid - try not to 'yank' the line, easy to damage your expensive investment (fly line). They do make stripping baskets to keep that from happening...there are just bulky.
I like to false cast a few times to better aim my distance I want to place my fly. I like to work sideways with the floats and just shooting a bunch of line out is not going to get my fly to land at the exact distance my target is. So false casting and slowly feeding line out with each cast works best for me on rivers with precise landing zones.

Hey Dan, wonderful casting video, thank you! I have watched so many tutorials on casting, and no matter how much practice, I cannot shoot line out of my rod, it's driving me mad. I noticed when you hold the line tight with the left hand or tug on it during the backcast, the line starts shooting on the back cast, allowing you to double load. My line doesn't move at all. It's not the line either, I replaced it, the line does flow like butter just shaking it out. I even tried using a 6 weight line on my 5weight rod, still not helping. Is it me??? Not sure what I could be doing wrong at this point. Could it be that I have a bad rod? I'm using the Remington path. Any help would be appreciated, just want to be able to cast my line with out having to false cast! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
If your mechanics are right, you are waiting for the line to fully extend behind you, you have a quality line, if you rod arc is not too wide when casting, you have a straight line path to the tip of the fly rod, you're using a balance of power/finesse; then it could very well be the fly rod. The Redington Path is their entry level fly rod and could be part of the issue contributing to your challenges, one of the reason's I designed my own series of fly rods - everything an expensive rod brings to the table at an affordable price. Medium fast action, light weight and we use a power taper on the rod blank that leads to a very forgiving casting fly rod - perhaps something to explore. Keep at it, you will get there and it will become muscle memory for you!
@@FlyFishDan Thank you!! Despite my inability to shoot the line, I'm still hooked for life with fly fishing...just might have to invest in your rod! Appreciate your thoughts, thanks so much!
Typically, when that happens, it's due to using light leader for the bigger streamers. I would use at least 3x for streamer fishing to avoid the snap off during a cast (happens to me too!)
@@FlyFishDan seems 5x 5lb is what I currently have. And I appreciate the replies, this whole fishing thing has not been the soothing, relaxing experience I expected. More like "What the hell am I not doing right?"

Thanks for the tips! Question, How do you manage the line when the are weeds and brash grabbing your line when you on the bank?
That is just part of fly fishing I'm afraid - try not to 'yank' the line, easy to damage your expensive investment (fly line). They do make stripping baskets to keep that from happening...there are just bulky.

My pleasure and thank you for considering my fly rod!
Thanks for the tips!
No problem!
How much of the fly line is hanging from the end of the rod when you cast? Is the leader dragging in the water?
Yes, you want to have at least a full rod's length of floating line out from the tip of your fly rod before you start your fly cast. You got this!
@@FlyFishDan Thankya. Somehow I managed to snap the leader on a cast. Not sure how I pulled that off.
