"Just trying to make music".... "It's healthy"... god bless you Rick, you're a legend. I remember my father bringing this film home from the movie rental shop when I was just a kid and playing it for me for the first time. It stayed with me through my teenage years, my 20's and now my 30's... whenever I am down I will run it though the PA system and sit down behind the drums with a case of beer. The best therapy I know for when you're feeling down and out. Cheers.
I can totally relate but it was my older brother. He can still remember how psyched he was to get it. They come out swinging and didn’t stop! It’s so epic
The best part of the movie, imo, amazingly evocative and heartfelt. That scene where Rick bows his head as he hears the strains of this song, where he knows that it'll always be about the music, but that his era with the Band is gone, to where he' ll go, he doesn't know. But he went anyway, and this song was just a beautiful accent to a love/time gone by. Very well done...
this video brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch it, rick I hope your ok where ever you are. I wish even more you could of stayed with us forever, one of the greatest ever in my books. RIP bro..
Soulmusic121, I agree with you 1000%. Every time I see this it breaks my heart, and I really think Scorsese knew what he was doing and this scene is the emotional climax of the film. But I've got past the Robbie hate. I watched it recently again with my girlfriend. It's clear that Rick was the leader and the others all hated Robbie, but she pointed out that Robbie was the only sober one who was trying -- the others basically stayed high and didn't care, just getting by on sheer talent.
When you think of Robbie, just keep in mind all that amazing songwriting. He's not a singer, not a guitar hero, and I know - he's an opportunist to put it kindly, but if you took all his song-stories and put them in one place, you've got like 5 trips around the world.
Opportunist ?? Rick , Richard and Levon all by their own admission were using Heroin So Robbie pulled it all together wrote all the songs and got a ton of shit when he took the credit for songs he wrote and they all song their rights to him as well
Robbie was not a singer, but he certainly could play guitar. He also knew The Band had to come to an end. He was the caretaker, trying to keep things together, while 3 members were stoned or drunk most of the time, crashing cars etc. Having said that I absolutely love Rick Danko. I love them all and their music. but they fighting some demons.@@davidbmilton524
I love The Band always have. Love Rick he is my favorite along with Robbie, based on their personality and looks. As musicians they were all very talented. I don't think they hated Robbie, certainly not Rick, he is not a hater, nor Richard and Garth. Levon was the only one who expressed bitternes towards Robbie years later. If you watch an interview about the Band with Eric Clapton, according to Clapton Rick was the leader when it came to having fun (sounds like Rick) bases on books and other accounts, Robbie was the leader, because he was the adult in the room, he probably was a little more ambitious then the others, and according to his book, also a little more scared towards the end, the drug use, car crashing got to much for him.
Some of you might not like Robbie, most that don't, don't know the whole story, but you have to admit when he smiles the whole room lights up. Rick too is so good looking and sexy here in his leather jacket. Love them both.
Oh man, so raw. A great song, and you can tell that he felt it from the heart. When he slumps his head into the shadows the look on his face is obvious. He still feels greatly about the woman he wants to lay beside, but she's gone. He also seems depressed about life in general, which is so sad. Thank you for the song, I've had many a deep moment in thought with this one playing Rick! Helps the soul to heal.
I think it has more to do with the fact that only Robbie really wanted it to be "The Last Waltz", the others wanted to go on. The Band was Rick's life and as he's being prodded by Scorsese, he know he has to let go of that life, yet he must go on making music because it's all he knows.
@@ingriddirty9012 Wow! He changed the title and took credit. At least according to Wikipedia he is credited for the tune. I don't have the actual physical album, is it correct that he took songwriter credit on it?
@François Gaspard my main point was that he made more music than any of the others combined in solo albums. It doesn’t mean the others gave up or didn’t create great music. They did. My point was that Robbie didn’t give up. On a side note, both Robbie and Levon released terrible albums. But I think they both had great highlights.
Robbie enjoyed the camera, and he's a born storyteller - those are givens. Robbie was also enthusiastic about the project; the others were not. Levon cussed out Scorsese, Rick and Richard were loaded in much of the interview footage, Garth was quiet and shy, as always - all of them were represented in spite of that. What footage do you think best represented The Band for posterity, and would be most enjoyable to the audience? I think Scorsese chose the best he had available to him.
I was looking for this Thanks YOu tube whats the Song name. So Great, I cried first time I saw this 6 years ago. Love the band, Try ONE NIGHT IN TORONTO THE HIP. GREAT DVD.

Is THIS version of the song available anywhere? Every version of the song that I've heard was recorded much later. Rick's voice doesn't sound as youthful as in this version.
Sad stuff ... The last waltz let danko and manuel alone with their demons .. didnt took long to see the damage with manuel suicide and danko physical degradation .. Imagine going from shangri la / last waltz / malibu life to playing in lone star cafe and other shithole place around usa wiht less than 200 people as audience .. Tragic
Actually Levon said he didn't mind playing in those places. Richard was obviously self destructive, and I guess so was Rick to some extent. He didn't take care of himself. However, there are some video clips from the early to mid eigthies with the Band, sans Robbie, that are really good, listen to Rick singing "A long black veil", as good as anything he did with The Band.
Correct, he was also exhausted trying to be the caretaker of The Band, and 3 of it's members, Rick, Richard and Levon, who all were doing heroin. I love The Band I love all the members, most of all I love Rick, but that is the truth. @@lulujeanne1
+Jacob Reesor he says, "Eddie, why don't you", and then stops because Eddie has apparently read his mind and is already doing what Rick was going to ask him and that is to roll the tape.
I was surprised he lasted so long. I don't mean that in a bad way - but being addicted to booze and drugs for 30 odd years doesnt make for a long life.
I always wished The Last Waltz had shown more from Rick Danko and Richard Manuel.
They all got screwed bc Robbie was close with Scorsese.
@@mattbt1291 Yeah, I heard Robbie screwed them over financially after the breakup too. The more I hear about Robbie the less I like him.

It's the saddest part of the movie for me. I suppose in a way it sums up the tragedy of The Band after the Last Waltz.

holy shit this is heartbreaking
A poignant scene. Rick Danko has the voice of an angel, like Richard and Levon. Gareth’s talent and dignity takes things to the next level.
He looked really sad putting his head down thinking about the greatest band ever coming to a end.
this scene always breaks my heart, Rick was such a tragic figure. Without The Band, he is lost and has nothing to do but "try to stay busy"
God I love him..

This is even sadder than the scene with Richard drunk on the couch. But it shows Rick never intended to give up on making music the way Robbie did.
Robbie has continually made music. He released much more in his solo career than the others and did film work. He just didn’t wanna tour
The saddest part of the movie now is Robbie was right the road took a lot of people and eventually the road took Richard and Rick

Because Robbie was tired of being on the road.
