Rick Danko - Sip The Wine - Live 1978

- A rare video of Rick Danko preforming "Sip The Wine" live from his 1st solo album. I'm pretty sure Danko/Band fans will appreciate this is much as i do, because Ive never seen this anywhere else so it must be somewhat rare. Its from a Chicago local TV station in which Rick played for 30 minutes and it was all recorded. Sadly Ive never got to see/meet Rick because I was only 5 when he passed (And not aware of him or The Band,This would happen when I was 12), But the music he left here on earth always made me feel as if ive met him. Rick sadly is gone but his music never will be meaning Rick is still here, and his much alive in his music. Mr. Danko this video is my thanks to you, and I assure you a bunch of people are still listening to you daily.
the scene in The Last Waltz where he previews this tune for Scorcese is one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie for reasons i dont quite understand but dont question.
So much pathos in that scene. You overhear him say he's "just keeping busy"... like someone heartbroken from a breakup or sudden loss.
ExileOnDaytonStreet he also says “it’s healthy”... which makes me also feel a little sad.
Oh, yeah...
Mine too. And I wondered for 40 years what song that was until I found out, today! 😎🥳
I got a vibe that Rick and Levon didn’t want to quit gigging in those interviews. Hell one of The Bands last performances was on SNL and not even a year later Levon was on SNL in Dr John’s band IIRC
Rick always sang like he didn't have a choice. Brilliant!
Him and Richard Manuel was so lost with the music, I get everything has to end. But man Robbie Robertson Yoko’d himself and the band. The possibilities of what could be and what was, is among the greatest music legends.
I'm stealing your line for my caption to my birthday tribute to Rick. It, too, is brilliant. Thanks!
Well said…..
I'm not sure what that means yet I completely understand
First of all I love Rick, his singing, his guitar playing, his personality and looks. However, by the time Robbie decided he was done with touring, things were spinning out of control. Richard was in bad shape alcohol and drugs, all kinds of drugs, Rick and Levon was not far behind, although they usually got it together for shows. Robbie was, in his own words, running scared that something really bad would happen. Too many musicians had already died of drug overdose, suicide etc. Robbie felt it was time to pull back, there were not the creativity anymore, or the ambition. Robbie again in his own words "were no angel, but he stayed away from heroin and he had young family that kept him grounded. So I don't think the possibilities of what could have been would have been possible. No one was willing to face their demons and move forward in a more constructive way. Richard did sober up for a short time, but eventually went back to his addiction and eventually killed himself. Rick I think unfortunately never quite kicked his heroin habit. Not sure about Levon, he starred in some movies and got good reviews. The Band did tour again in the early eigthies, sans Robbie.@@idicula1979
Danko was so great, and such a tragic figure. The interview he does in the Last Waltz with this song behind it has to break your heart, when asked what he is doing now that the Last Waltz is over all he can come up with his is "trying to keep busy" he looks utterly lost. breaks my heart every time
i always love the way rick d. seemed to almost spasm. . .as if he were overtaken by some other worldly force that would give rise to that voice. . . unadulterated fucking passion. . . let the current generation take notice. .
There's a unique quality to his voice that no one can imitate. Love this man - too bad he died so young.
mos def. . . god bless the late and so great rick d. . . there will never be another like him. . .
60?
That's pretty early to die.
@@guyroni6233
He was nineteen days shy of his 56th birthday.
This is meaningful to me, as I am just over 7 months older than he was when he passed. I still hope for a lot of years more (my father is still alive at 86 1/2).
@@jona.874 cool and good
Now I really know why Rick is called the High Lonesome Voice of The Band !!! What an incredible voice he had.
Just booked a springtime road trip to go pay respects to Rick and Levon.
LM SCHULTZ I paid my respects in 2013. Nice place.
I went there, met Richard too on a different trip of course, further north. These great men must not leave our minds.
going next month Excited at 72 YOA
I paid my respect back in 2013. Poured half a bottle of wine on both of these great musicians graves while playing “The Weight” on the vehicle radio.
Such a naturally gifted voice with a really unique delivery. He learned to become a great bass and guitar player but that voice... you’re either born with it or you’re not.
AWESOME! Thanks for posting this! I am Rick's niece and was staying with him in Malibu when he was recording this album. FUCKING AWESOME!
Amazing!
There is no one on Earth with a finer voice than Rick Danko. A singer's singer. Emotional depth that almost no one else plumbs. Rick Danko has the admiration of all listeners and singers alike. RIP Rick
Far out. I watch and listen to the band all the time. Stay well my friend. TX
All the best to you and yours from West Virginia. I love Rick!
At shangrila? Been there cool
Rick Danko was filled with emotion that poured out from his music. I look up to this guy more than just about anyone in the business. Never seen a more sincere singer
you have an unique and true observation. I always felt Rick to be all heart and soul when he played and sang. he cld really bring it so much so that his body had to move around to accommodate his emotions.
It always seemed to be a positive joyful emotion Rick had it wasn’t coming from a dark painful place like a lot of singers have including Richard
He and Richard are not from this world. I cannot believe these talents are so overlooked.
Great Story-teller....
@@stephensmith799 and he always laughed when he spoke
I was very close to Rick and he truly was a one of a kind, like no other, in his talent, voice, kind and huge Heart. Miss you my Dear, Dear Friend❤⚘
I cry every time I listen to this. rick was the best vocalist of them all!
Quentin Ryan no denying that Richard had some incredible pipes
I guess we all have our favorites. As for singers Rick is my favorite as well. However, that is not to take away from the other singers, no one but Levon could sing Dixie, or Up on Cripple Creek, and Richard was perfect for "The Shape I'm in", but as much as I like those 2, in my book no one comes close to Rick when he sings "It makes no difference" or "Stage Freight".@@boxieracorn8445
Ah, Rick. No words to describe how much I love him. His voice gives me chills...
My wife's favourite musician of all time. She has good taste.
I love listening to Rick Danko no one can capture a tune quite like Rick...makes me cry at times...R.I.P.
Rick was Fantastic!!! Rest in Peace.
Great lead by Rick. I thought It Makes no Difference was the only song he did that would make me weep.............till I heard this.
I am having the same thought...wow. Amazing emotion in that voice.
Under appreciated member of The Band. A true poet. RIP Rick.
Pure talent there is no other voice like Rick Danko.
Some songs just seem custom made for Rick. This is one of them. Those first few lines get me every time.
I just cannot understand why anyone would think that Rick is not talented. This video is proof with the version of his song.
Who says he isn’t talented? Are they deaf?
Rick Danko Group ... Jerry Peterson Sax , Walt Richmond Piano. Terry Danko Vocals, Bass and Guitar , Denny Seiwell Drums , Rick Danko Vocals , Bass and Guitar, Michael DeTemple Lead Guitar and Vocals , and Marty Grebb B3 Organ and Keys not on this show but on the rest for the next 2 years
Thanks--I was wondering about the personnel in this great lineup. That's you on bass? And the drummer is Denny Seiwell from McCartney's band?
@@timb.2222 it is on this one Rick and I switch back and forth
@@1949danko In all my years as a fan of Rick's, I had never seen this video until this week. Such a high-energy band. Excellent performance. So cool to see Rick take a turn on lead guitar. My best to you.
Oh Rick how you are missed! You sing this with so much soul. And I'm moved every time you sing Makes No Difference. Rest in Peace, my brother.
Great to see young people appreciate THE BAND and Rick Danko. I was 18 when they shut down (Last Waltz).....did not know much about them until then....Loved some of their songs....didn't know who sang them back in the AM radio days....The Weight, Up on Cripple Creek, etc. GREAT MUSICIANS.....if you watch the Last Waltz watch how rick plays with the fiddle as they play Old Time Religion.....He was the genuine article. Guts, talent, and soul.
I'm not sure how ANYONE could downvote this incredible song.
I love you rick, rest easy my brother.
Amen.......
Born in civago
rest easy my brother. . . rest easy
AHHHHHH Rick.... your heart was always smack in the middle of every beautiful note you sung, something 3 of your Band mates and sole partners shared with you. You guys played for the love and fun of it... not just for the $$$$
Played in the late 1970's - you could almost feel the era of the 60's and 70's slipping away
David Visoky It was a sad time for music.
Love that era still living it
It must have been so incredibly difficult to come back to Earth after having reached such musical highs in his band days and solo work, I'd be using too.
That's how some addicts never get clean. Use over disappointments and other stuff they don't like to deal with. Its life
Rick didn’t use because of disappointment. He was in a near-fatal car wreck just after Big Pink came out; he somehow managed to crawl out of his car and wandered around with a broken neck and back. He was in traction when he found out that his girlfriend was pregnant and proposed to her from his hospital bed.
He lived in constant pain from this accident and used opiates as a way to manage his pain.
I listen to this over and over. The first line or two gives me chills! That voice!
Amen!
This is way way way too good!!
Rick was such an amazing talent!! Unreal man, just unreal!! Rest In Peace Rick!
A very underrated musical force. Very sweet.
one of my favorite singers of all time
YES what a vocal showcase! A deeply emotive performance by one of the greatest vocalist the universe has ever had the pleasure to listen to.
The soulful Band member had a beautiful voice-hope you are sipping the wine in heaven Rick.
u were the life and soul of the band rick. love ur energy and passion.
I am glad that I tripped across this from The Last Waltz......or I would not be here now appreciating the full song. Truly a talent. Very soulful.
How could the 60's and 70's have been so great? Damn! Were all those bands great by their own or were there a hidden masterful composer writing all this stuff for them? There's nothing like this anymore
FeelingShred There's still great music out there. Difference was that back in the 60s & 70s talent rose to the top. All you had to do was turn on the radio or the tv and the music was great. What destroyed music was MTV. Cause image took precedence over music. That and corporate greed of the last 30 years which has destroyed everything (not just music). But there's still good music out there. You just have to go find it. It's not gonna come to you anymore.
Lynn Turman I like the thought, and it is true that image took precedence over the music, but the idea that music of the sort of quality that The Band produced is still out there, just not coming to you, is sadly untrue. In the 60's-70's there was a market, strong social and financial incentives to create this sort of music that there isn't now.
bifthebif Hmmm....I agree that the Band were in a class by themselves. But if you don't think there are people out there now just as talented, just as committed, then I disagree. True artists HAVE to create (regardless of market forces or regardless of anything else). And yes, NOW there is no market for them. And that is why we haven't heard of them. But they're out there, I'm convinced.
this is an awesome song. classic
Lynn Turman I hope you're right. I just can't think of any. If you do let me know.
Rick doing a little shredding, no end to his talent, miss him no end.
I miss Rick Danko.
Buckminster Fuller We all miss them.
Speaks to the great talent of The Band that one if it's least heralded members could put out a song this beautiful. RIP Rick
The Band is forever~
1977 Chicago Sound Stage ( TV Show )
That scene is referred to as "The moment." Honestly, he made great music for years after that.
2022 Danko still on my play list!
I call him part of the big 3 (Rick,Richard,Levon) so unique and so talented it's scary . Maybe Lennon McCartney & Harrison in their class
You nailed it. They never lost a thing.
and garth...jeebus, garth.
Or Crosby, Stills and Nash. Great harmonies they all had.
They are the three voices of the Band, but Robbie and Garth are the Lennon & McCartney.
Sam! The boys have joined John and George at the 'Big Gig'!
Waiting for the 'musical director'!
The 'Real Band'!
Now that is called 'Heaven'!
This is one of my top five favourite songs.
One of my all time favorite performances, been listening to the audio for a long time. Wish his family and friends the best
Just THE BEST! God! Bless Them ALL!
Love love love Rick and the music he created and helped create!
This is what makes something like youtube useful....I couldn't watch it otherwise...great video...great performance.
Love Rick Danko. What a voice -- none other like it.
I'm 20 years old, born in '92 so I was 7 when Danko died. It's depressing that I never got to see music like this live....all we have nowadays doesn't interest me. I'll I want is to have been born in the 50s. Danko was a god!
R.I.P. Big Lad!
We're still listening!
Such soul. RIP Rick
as i said before ,the band was one of the great ones,,,i grew up with them.we had music from big pink when i was 12 ,,i wish kids had the good music we had growing up ,,Joplin Hendrix ect..there is garbage now for them to listen to, it says nothing ,,wow what a shame!!!
Wonderful, thanks Rick!!!!!!
He loved to get drunk. So drunk. I understand, Ricky. He just wanted the drinking to take over. God Bless.
I also picked this one out from The Last Waltz. I won't tell you how long it took me to find the CD that this was on, or how much I paid for it. As I recall I had to order it from England, and this is the stellar song on the CD. Also the most expensive CD in my collection from back then. Yeah, still missing Rick...
Great tune!!
I miss him so much, it hurts.
powerful emotion. excellent song! the 1970s were the best - before Rap, Grunge crap, teenage music.
Feeling so sad I wasn't alive yet for WOODSTOCK, all my favorites end after the 80's... my soul is still in mourning for LEVON and RICK
Happy Heavenly 80th Birthday Rick Danko December 29 1943 - December 10 1999
Haunting excellence, thanks for sharing it.
Awesome song!! Thank you! RIP Rick.
What a gem, what a diamond...thanks!!!
God bless all you happy people
just awesome
Saw the reformed Band four times, three times in the '80s, once in the '90s when they toured to back the Jericho album. Always a great show. The second time I saw them was just a few nights before Richard died. But one of my favorite shows was seeing Danko and Paul Butterfield do an acoustic set together in a small venue is south Florida. It was the perfect setting to see two of my musical heroes.
thank you for posting this. man, what a voice. . .what a soul. . .thanks.
I saw The Last Waltz at a theatre and I still have the vinyl. I''m into all kinds, but The Last Waltz brings it all home. I've met The Hawk, saw Garth and his wife on tour, and Robbie is brilliant. Levon passing away was not a good one for any of us, but the music remains. Festival Express with an inebriated Janis Joplin, Rick Danko, Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir is priceless.
Perfection, authentic, REAL! Nobody can hate this.
He was a friend..fun loving prankster with a kind and gentle heart and way about him. A beautiful voice and delivery. A fine bass player and fiddler. Rick could play anything.A truly talented artist❤
Never heard this before, fantistic!!
MY GOD ! THANKS A MILLION TIMES OVER FOR THIS ! i actually have the last waltz on vhs , Rick has always been my fav ,along with Levon Helm , but the the BAND was The Band !
I remember when "The Last Waltz" came to the movie theaters, My buddy and I couldn't get there fast enough. Scooped the album up shortly after. When the dvd came out many years later, I scooped that too.
You the man, Rick!!👍
Thank you so very much for uploading & sharing this. I've got chills & swells, beautiful.
Keep enjoying that Heavenly music 7/3 / 2023
Rick Danko. A unique talent! May you never rest in peace
wicked good one Rick
So sad to loose so much talent too young
But isn't that always how life goes
Thanks so much for posting this. What a beautiful song. It's also great to hear firsthand from young people who are influenced by such classic music.
Beautiful. Thank You for posting...so special, I'm speechless.
Missing Rick still listening today the voice of the Band
Rick is absolutely trashed 👍still performs like a trooper 👊
great song.....thanks for posting this clip
Thinking of you Rick … 23 years without you on this Earth ❤️💫🌹
A one off musician and person. Love ya Rick
Wow...thanks for posting this. I've been listening to some of The Band's music and searching about and boom...stumbled onto this. What a great performance.
this is friggin excellent!!!! I was beginning to think there wouldnt ever be a live version of this tune availble, and yet here it is and its just awesome!!!
R.I.P Rick
thank you for this song
Thanks for this, Rick Danko is always a joy.
Real Simple the man is an Icon, love you always Rick, R.I.HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is from Rick's '77 solo album.....which I only discovered last week after all these years of listening to the Band. Definitely worth a listen....Also: I'm thinking Keanu Reeves should play Rick in the biopic....
Wow, how'd you miss it for so long? I bought it in 1980 and it's still in my top 10.
got to see the 2nd incarnation of the Band a few times and Rick with various folks in the village in the 80s. great talent
What a great song and video. Thank you for posting. Rick is like so many people in this world who carry the weight but never get the credit. He was the George Harrison of The Band.
Pappy George saw The Bans play at Woodstock. Pappy always said Robbie took all the credit.
God bless Ricky and rest his troubled soul.
Thanks so much for this wonderful tune. I've had a hard time finding a lot of solo Rick Danko stuff.
