"This dam is stronger/harder to pull apart than the last one"
In my head cannon beavers call in beaver engineers with tiny clipboards and tiny hard hats every time post10 rips apart the dam to figure out a way to thwart this human menace to beaverkind with a better designed dam.

    • @GreenScreenFullHD

This time the dam was stronger! Because the management of the beaver company decided that the systematically crumbling dam was neglect. Which led to layoffs and crew replacements.

When I was a track worker, we(track foreman)would ride in a hi-rail truck and patrol the single track north of Brewster NY... the great Patterson swamp had a very large population of beavers...we knocked down yards and yards of dams they built, only to find them rebuilt 2 days later !! They are amazing critters ....great video P10...thanks !

The Beavers were probably thanking you for the prime opportunity to upgrade their dam system. Knocking them down will not deter the Beavers. I kind of admire their unending tenacity to keep rebuilding what we rip apart. I'm pretty sure introducing more Beavers into say, the Midwest, might help restore their water and their ecosystems.

I'm so fascinated with this. I've been binging for the last 6 hours and those beaver dams are just amazingly compact. So much work to root it up (in a safe way anyway). They're amazing animals despite their work being seen as hurtful to our infrastructure.

    • @echofoxtrot2.051

Actually they're the best for ecosystems. Humans just aren't willing to work with ecosystems anymore. We choose us over nature. Post, about your comment on chest waders. I fully understand your concern. I've been a fly fisherman in CO for many years. I fish still water, and very fast moving rivers with a pair of lightweight chest waders. The consensus is that they in fact don't drag you down when falling in. The simple explanation is that, water in water is neutral so it doesn't create substantial resistance. I have fallen in a few times over the years and can say that I didn't feel them to be a hindrance. I only mention it because I think a quality pair of lightweight breathable waders would suit you well my friend, and make your adventures much more comfortable.

Isn't it more about trying to pull yourself out of the water though? The extra weight in the waders would definitely cause a problem in the kinds of scenarios Post10 would be in? If things became dangerous I mean. Last time he said the extra weight in his tall boots already made it more challenging to get away from the current/collapsing dam.

you’ve used a rake in unclogging drains but have you considered using a garden fork or something like it to disassemble these beaver dams? seems to me like you could jab it in and dislodge a lot more branches and mud with one of those than by hand, especially if you alternated that and tugging the bigger logs and sticks loose

Beaver dams are carefully constructed so they are essentially puzzles to take apart, its not like when you pile brush for a bonfire and can keep taking off the top of the pile.
About the only effective tools for this are hand picking, a chain saw (mud would instantly dull it), and possibly some sort of fire/flamethrower. Everything else would be rather ineffective at demolishing it or be heavy machinery like an escavator/backhoe that he legally cant use as a volunteer (even the chainsaw is probably off limits).
Also i wonder if a pressure washer would work, assuming you had a water feed/gas for it to stay functional.

one danger you should be aware of is when the dam gets "loose" in those metal pipes, there is a chance of the entire dam sliding down and out the pipe from the water pressure behind it.
When I was a kid, I broke a few beaver dams by just sitting there and poking it with a stick. The branches and all were locked together real well but I managed to wash out all the dirt in between them by just poking and wiggling a big stick down through the cracks.
I really enjoy the sound of those rocks tumbling down through the pipe.
Thanks for making these videos, brings back memories and the running water is pretty peaceful.

    • @grantgarrod2232
      @grantgarrod2232 2 роки тому +14

You're right, Paul, & that's the primary reason to work from the top rear edge downward, to gradually lower the water level to relieve pressure on the dam as you go. If you work from the front edge, you run a much higher risk of the dam breaking loose from the pipe all at once, & the massive flow of released water at high volume & pressure toppling you into a raging torrent filled with mud, rocks, and tangled sticks & logs, & who knows how or when you could fight your way up & out of it to safety. Working from the back, at a minimum, gives you the chance of fleeing down the pipe & out of the way.

Depends on the size, weight, interlocking of the wood and whether there are small elements that will not simply dissolve into tiny fragments as dirt/mud will.
