    Bravissimo Franco!

    I haven't heard this live recording of Corelli singing Nessun Dorma, but it must have been right at his peak, because you can actually feel the energy and power this man possessed, yet his finesse when he diminuendos on his high registered is also something to marvel at. Sorry, but Corelli did make Pavarotti sound like a choir boy! Sorry too to see so few comments on a voice that has and will be forever the greatest voice of all!

      it's a pity there is such a tiny visual record of corelli live.
      to my knowledge, while there are some good handfulls of live excerpts, i am aware of only two or three that capture what i remember of his presence and energy on stage.
      1. a rehearsal segment of Cavalleria Rusticana from Scala with Simionato.
      2. a chopped up act III Tosca duet with Lisa Della Casa. not great sound but great singing from him and that wild stage animal thing he had going is there to some extent.
      3. core n'grato from a concert in japan mid 70s. the brief smile at the end. yes, corelli did smile.
      those are the three that remind me most strongly of what i remember of him live and can all be found on youtube.

    Franco Corelli owned Nessun Dorma, even though Pavarotti used it as his signature song he did pay tribute to Corelli and his "vocal chords of steel." I believe he performed Calaf in Turandot at the Met, more than any other Tenor even though he started there in 1961 at age 40 and retired at age 50.Thank you for posting . RIP Franco Corelli, Bravo to Infiniti!

      They were both wonderful.
      Corelli had a darker tone (which he managed by lowering his larynx), similar to Caruso's, a fast vibrato and a bright voice that seemed to jump towards the high notes. In my opinion, Corelli's voice allows him to make a better Mario Cavaradossi than Pavarotti.
      Pavarotti had a rounder and more mature voice, a better falsetto and the power of his voice was not as bright and young as Corelli's but a little more static but sweet and firm. To me it seems Pavarotti's voice allows him to make a better Rodolfo than Corelli.
      Excellent tenors, but different nuances.

      @@uma22 well stated. Love young pavarotti's voice, his voice is not the same after late 1980's. Most recordings unfortunately made during those 3 tenors time at 1990s... To me, Pavarotti has strong clean diction and techniques, also very wise, he prefer not to do full Calaf as his major operatic repretores, only this aria. Corelli is almost perfect Prince Calaf to go through the hectic act 3 action.

    There are some comments comparing Corelli with Pavarotti. There is no competition. Pavarotti was a fine tenor but just not in the same league as Corelli. In fact nobody was. Some have come close but for roles such as Calaf, Cavaradossi, Manrico, etc. Corelli is the best. More powerful, more passionate and more moving. As for the current generation of tenors. Well...,

So much difference, so great. Kraus was the Technical perfection. Del Monaco was the rude power. Corelli… is the voice of God.

    Voices are all different, even the great ones. Consequently some voices are better suited to particular roles than others.
    Corelli is very well suited to Calaf. For myself (and others may think differently, that’s fine) and taken overall, Björling is still my ‘go to’ tenor.
    But for me, of course Corelli remains ‘up there’, and for some roles it is one of his recordings that I will naturally reach for first.

      Tuning all instruments in an orchestra by a quarter tone would be impossible - it doesn't exist! I believe you mean 'semitone', as it is the smallest musical increment an instrument can tune by. Most live opera would be in the original key, but this recording was probably electronically (digitally) altered, to sound even MORE vibrant than it was!

    Ίσως ο καλύτερος Καλάφ, που έχει ακουσθεί. Το να λέμε, όμως, ότι είναι ο μεγαλύτερος τενόρος, που υπήρξε ποτέ, είναι τουλάχιστον αβάσιμο. Ο μεγαλύτερος σε τι; Ο Κορέλλι ήταν ένας σπίντο-δραματικός και φυσικά διέπρεπε στους ανάλογους ρόλους. Δεν μπορούμε να συγκρίνουμε την φωνή του μ' αυτήν τού Ταλιαβίνι, ή τού Τζίλι στο μπελκάντο, διότι απλούστατα είναι διαφορετικές φωνές. Άκουσε κάποιες άριες, όπως για παράδειγμα αυτήν τού ονείρου από την Μανόν με τον Τζίλι, ή την "Μοναξιά τού Βοσκού" (Αρλεζιάνα) με τον Ταλιαβίνι κλπ., υπάρχουν πολλές, που τις ξέρεις. Πώς να τον συγκρίνεις με τον Τίτο Σκίπα; Πέραν αυτών, υπάρχουν και οι καθαρά δραματικοί ρόλοι, όπως τού Οθέλλο, τον οποίο ο Κορέλλι δεν τραγούδησε ποτέ, για λόγους που δεν γνωρίζω. Μπορείς να τον συγκρίνεις με τον Μάριο Ντελ Μόνακο, το Ρεμόν Βινέ και όχι μόνο;
    Όσο για τον Καρούζο, είχε μία τελείως ξεχωριστή και εξαιρετικά προσαρμόσιμη φωνή, που τού επέτρεπε να τραγουδά τα πάντα! Ήταν, ας πούμε, μία αρσενική Κάλλας, ένας τενόρος σφογκάτο, αν μπορεί να λεχθεί ο όρος, που δεν μπορούμε να το συγκρίνουμε με κανέναν, πολλώ μάλλον αφού δεν έχουμε καλές εγγραφές, λόγω τεχνικών μέσων τής εποχής. Μονάχα διαβάζουμε κι ακούμε τι γράφουν/λένε αυτοί που τον άκουσαν στην σκηνή.
    Έγραψα και γράφω ελληνικά, διότι αυτή είναι η γλώσσα μου και δεν βλέπω γιατί ο κάθε Ιταλός, Γάλλος, ή Ρώσσος να γράφουν στην δική τους κι εγώ να γράφω αγγλικά.
    Τέλος, λατρεύω την φωνή τού Κορέλλι, τού αγαπημένου τενόρου τής Κάλλας, αλλά στους ρόλους που ταίριαζαν στην φωνή του.
    Ευχαριστώ για την κατανόηση και υπομονή σου.

    • @aetion
      @aetion 6 років тому +2

      Ταλιαβίνι, ο γνήσιος διάδοχος των Σκίπα και Τζίλι, μία από τις ωραιότερες φωνές, που δυστυχώς κατέστρεψε μόνος του με ρόλους που δεν ήταν κατάλληλοι γι αυτήν (ό,τι έκανε δηλαδή και ο Πίππο και όχι μόνο). Εδώ μπορείς να κρίνεις μόνος σου ua-cam.com/video/8d1tJXMvMeQ/v-deo.html
      Για τον Καρούζο και τις ψηλές νότες οι πληροφορίες είναι μάλλον αντιφατικές. Πολλοί λένε ότι τις απέφευγε, αλλά η αλήθεια είναι ότι μάλλον τις είχε, όπως και ότι μπορούσε να τραγουδήσει ρόλο βαρυτόνου. Ήταν ειδική περίπτωση φωνής.

    Excellent but not as good as Pavarotti. If you listen carefully there were a couple of notes in the middle where Corelli tightened up and had to push. With Pavarotti it was effortless, he just stood there, opened his mouth and it came out as if there was a machine inside. You could hear any breathing, there were no veins, there was no movement, no strain even when he was overweight and in pain with his knees.
