I love this song so much! My voice teacher walked down the aisle for her wedding with two of my fellow students singing the Flower Duet from the balcony above. It was heavenly.

Omyyyy I remember I kept watching the recording video with Sabine and Marianne on repeat years ago and now, we finally have this!!✨✨✨✨
IMO, the performance with Sabine and Marianne is the single best rendition I’ve ever heard
@@fredscott6156That studio recording is indeed the best sound rendition and the best diction combined on this piece.

*English Translation of the Flower Duet*
Under the thick dome where the white jasmine
With the roses entwined together
On the river bank covered with flowers laughing in the morning
Let us descend together!
Gently floating on its charming risings,
On the river’s current
On the shining waves,
One hand reaches,
Reaches for the bank,
Where the spring sleeps,
And the bird, the bird sings.
Under the thick dome where the white jasmine
Ah! calling us
Together!
Under the thick dome where white jasmine
With the roses entwined together
On the river bank covered with flowers laughing in the morning
Let us descend together!
Gently floating on its charming risings,
On the river’s current
On the shining waves,
One hand reaches,
Reaches for the bank,
Where the spring sleeps,
And the bird, the bird sings.
Under the thick dome where the white jasmine
Ah! calling us
Together!

Thank you for the beautiful translation, which I'd never before seen. But having been ignorant of the words & having never seen the entire work performed, I'd always imagined the duet to be an exchange between two flowering plants, not humans. That might seem strange to many but I was brought up to view plants & all else that's called "Nature" as being as alive as humans but with each form of life having its own way of seeing & living & interacting with others. This view of life is sometimes glimpsed in western or modern society, but English & other Eur. languages don't contain terms that succinctly or completely describe it. And I'm not sure if any other "old world" languages contain terms which describe this view that is a major part of most, if not all, pre-Columbian languages of N. Am. What can be succinctly described in classic Nahuatl or in the native languages classified as Iroquoian or Muskogean or in the hundreds of known native languages are the general ideas re: the kinds of animals & plants & the various kinds of mountains & parts of the "landscape," etc, each with their own attributes & ways, with each having its own way of living & interacting with others, with each also contributing to the whole of life we call "Nature" or "the Earth."
Somehow I had always imagined something more like the conversations found in Ravel's "L'enfant de Savauge," his opera with lyrics written by Colette. In this opera, teapots & squirrels & all else in the small child's room turn on him & tell him how badly he has treated them in his fit of temper.
That is how I'd imagined the flowers in this song, except of course that the two flowers (part of two living plants) are expressing their love & adoration for one another. In many performances I've seen online, the duet is sung by two women & in at least one recording the two women are dressed in flower costume. And in flower costume they sing & sway about in ways that look as if they are expressing their mutual adoration.
Although the actual poem is quite beautiful, I can't help but feel a bit disappointed to find the duet to be a love song sung by a human couple. No doubt the opera is wonderful & the duet beautiful as an idyllic scene of the lovers in a natural setting, but I think I prefer to see the duet as a love song between two flowers.
Thank you! That helps so much. It’s beautiful.
Thank you.
❤
The epiphany of when opera transcends voice, stage and conductor's score into a magical entity soaring in the Universe.
One of the most beautiful and moving compositions in human history .... and a breathtaking performance.
Control of the decrescendo on the high notes in perfect synchronicity is sublime.🙌
That stood out for me above all else.
The dynamics were breathtaking.
Had nothing to do with the music!
The use of stage hands covered like that from head to toe feels like it's taken from Kabuki? I love that if so, mixing theater traditions to make something both visually and musically stunning.
How.. some people on earth blessed with ability to composo such songs. ... Heavenly...❤
I am from India and I appreciate Delibes for composing such a beautiful opera and the story and music of Lakmé are really passionate. And in general French classical music is deeply rich in evoking emotions.
As an Indian, then you need to listen to Massenet's opera "Le roi de Lahore" - The King of Lahore, (1877), set in 11th-century India.
The music is magnificent and the story is very moving.
I will never get tired of playing this song on repeat like what I did with Sabine and Marianne’s duet! 💯
Please post many more arias from this performance! Sabine (Lakme) and Ambroisine (Mallika), as well as the other artists were wonderful throughout the entire opera.
What an intriguing production design!
Fabulous costumes, fabulous singing. Singing and removing the costume at the same time.
Quel magnifique duo… j’ai eu la chance d’assister à la dernière à la Filature à Mulhouse …. Je suis toujours dans cet état de charme depuis plus d’un mois …. Ambroisine une découverte et Sabine une confirmation ❤
Beauty shall save the world!
The staging was magnificent, added levels of meaning to the glorious music.
Really Really like this. A Premier performance by Sabine and Ambroisine. But Sabine and Marianne .. Still the one for me
The use of dynamics is flawless
It is the basis of the most musical of all fantastic singers, and their ability and execution is sublime. It's other worldly
Finally now I know the title of this song that I have been hearing all my life especially on the comercials
You would have known it sooner if you had visited the library and improved your mind with the classics.
@@mjremy2605don’t be an ass. That’s not going to win anyone over.
@@mjremy2605 - So... how many local public libraries have Lakme recordings? Three? Seven? I've never seen a Lakme recording anywhere but online, so it's a pretty non-mainstream opera. The aria is famous, but French opera in general is not a thing in most countries that have Western opera. Italian grand opera or Wagner is what most public libraries would have. Or maybe "Ten Best Soprano Arias" might include this one... probably not, though.
@@mjremy2605 10 years of music school behind, no idea of Lakme. Don't you think that countries that are not France have no their own operas to perform in Theatres? Lakme has been staged here for only years. World is huge

It is a delight, for the ears, for the mind and for the heart.
Absolutely divine in every aspect, vocally and visually. I had tears in my eyes, the beauty of this overwhelmed me. At 1:43 , the control Davieilhe has over the high note in pianissimo is absolutely incredible, I've never heard any other soprano sing that line in such a ravishingly beautiful way, absolute pleasure!

La mise en scène, les gestes, et les costumes accompagnent à merveille la délicatesse de ce duo, cet extrait est un régal d'enchantement...
Watched this mise en scène two times at Strasbourg and Mulhouse. C’était magnifique

The staging reminds me of the Dune movies. Beautiful
Their voices blend nicely. Great control & neither is overpowering the other.
La voz de Sabine es angelical, cristalina.

Rippling line going forward, just gorgeous.
Absolutely stunning
I love the preformance, people are surprised when i say im a punk/metal goth drag queen that loves opera, but the productuon here was great and clean strong vocals are always a great time
Idk why it would be surprising. They’re all very theatrical/dramatic genres
@@intrusive-th0t exactly, but also I feel luke a lot of people see those generas and don't even try to understand ya feel?
I composed an entire HS music appreciation class lesson comparing the Queen of the Night aria to Epica and Floor Jansen's duet of Sancta Terra. Old opera was 1000% the punk/metal/gothic scene of its time.
Oh please....all those things you called yourself have the same grandness and complexity of nuance, story and musical libretto.. as Opera...plus the costuming is outrageously lush usually. Besides "Diva" is the label and icon that carries over...ih BTW...what you say about yourself and the taste for Opera youve got? Try Studio Killers..or for that Goth part, Nightclub

I have no idea what’s happening here lol but wow what gorgeous costumes!
"Costumes" when it's quite literally cultural attire is crazy.
"Costumes" when referring to attire worn during the performance of a play makes sense. Not understanding contextual grammar for vocabulary just to bother someone on the internet though...
@xil'Other people's culture as a backdrop to an out of context opera is fine" is crazy. You ought to be embarrassed to have suggested that in public.
Meanwhile on Earth one, using cultural attire as costumes in a play by non-members of the culture, specifically when that performance is unrelated to that culture itself is distasteful---whether or not you agree. This practice trivializes the deep significance of this cultural attire, perpetuates stereotypes as white women shuffle in the background like they think Japanese women must have done, reinforces power imbalances.
Moreover, it lacks authenticity and understanding, leading to misrepresentation and disrespect towards the culture and its people. Therefore, it's crucial for artists and their supporters to approach cultural representation with sensitivity, respect, and a willingness to engage with the communities they're portraying for guidance.
I am not in defense of the play at all. The person specifically stated that they have no idea what is happening in the play, only that the costumes were gorgeous. You were swift to want to give me a full explanation when you felt like you were trying to put me in my place, but why didn't you use a helpful approach in educating that person about why you disagreed instead of trying to humiliate them? The person already made it clear that they do not understand the context, they just wanted to make a nice statement. For all of your social posturing, you could use decorum on the internet for people who just want to have a nice day. Let that person enjoy saying it's gorgeous costumes in the context or explain why you disagree instead of just trying to put someone down.
My culture has constantly endured cultural appropriation. In fact essentially everything from the African American diaspora has been taken by everyone around this world. Still, I have enough joy left in this world to be able to let someone enjoy something and not demean every little thing that they say without being willing to either educate or just move on.
While I'm pretty sure you feel like you just had a big moment right there, I'm afraid you missed the mark. I do wish you a good day though.

So divine 🤍
Simply gorgeous... But if I remember the story of Lakmé, I'm not sure how it could be termed 'comic' in any way...
Comique is the name of the Opera House as opposed to the main Garnier Opera House. It was called that way because it was mostly dedicated to Opera Bouffe pieces with spoken dialogues between the arias, at the time it was created. Nowadays it’s mostly dedicated to French composers of the 19th century like Bizet, Thomas, Offenbach, Delibes, Massenet etc. Opera Comique is a genre but not necessarily comic.
@@catherinecozzano2580fascinating! 🌟💖
While it could be performed at the house of the same name, the terms dates from the 18th century and really means that the work contains spoken dialogue and singing. Carmen is another great example of this.
@@treverhollandThank you. That's what I meant in my comment. Happy new year 🎉
French 'comic opera' just means that the story has spoken lines as well as song.
