So true my friend, I remember so clearly going to their show at the Liverpool Empire on Thursday December 4th 1980 as a 14 year old and looking back now as a 58 year old, I honestly think that was the best time of my life!! If I could go back in time to one specific era, it would be to that!! Everything was easy, cool and new and it seemed there was a lot more love and respect around then!! Let's just hope that whatever is next for us is a lot more like 1980!!
You know those time when you watch a 'live' clip and you hear vocals that sound like they are raining down from heaven and you think he cant really sound that good? Midge Ure sounds that good. He is a legend
I was a disillusioned 29 year old man in 2015, and all given up about being a musician, as I couldn't find neither a steady job nor earn enough to make a living. Then, I passed an audition in the city of Vienna that changed my life. Every time I get there and see the distant skyline on the horizon as driving on the Autobahn, I play this song and thank The Beatles, The Police, Bryan Adams, Johnny Cash, The Who and of course Ultravox for getting me through tough times and for giving me the strength and will to keep on believing in my impossible dream. #vienna
@@Matt-Durham I have been empolyed as an Singer at the Oper Graz in the nearby city of Graz since 2016, and I am a regular at the Festival of Salzburg during the summer, and when I have the time I join again the so-called extra choir for some unforgettable fun on the stage of the Vienna State Opera. And, to be totally frank, it feels great. I wish I could tell my 16 year old self... there is a way, out there into the world. #KeepTheDreamAlive :)
As a 16 year old, I think that this has got to be one of the coolest live performed songs in music history. Especially since it was WAYY ahead of it's time.
I was a teenager too and this song used to give me strength when I was feeling down. I think it still does somehow and that is one of the reasons I come back to it. Apart from that, I think this live performance is the best version! I just love it 🥰🎶
I agree. Blows my mind completely. Love the fx on the vocals. He's out there singing it today and it's just as incredible, check out local shows on here.
I did...saxophone as well. The band Gentlemen Afterdark. Some tracks on Spotify and a few not great videos on UA-cam. Of course Billy Currie (Ultravox) and Eddie Jobson from (U.K., and Roxy Music) inspired me!
@@BarrySmithviolin that's all damn good music. It's sad, I never knew of this band back in the 80's. I only knew Def Leppard and ACDC and other crap on the radio. Now we have hip hop garbage mumble rap and Nickelback that is 'popular'. Sad. There needs to be more music like this. 😊
Countless Vienna listenings, still B. Currie's violin solo, the synthesisers' chords, send a something cold but very pleasant to my brain and body. Respect!
I saw them 13 times live during the Vienna to Lament period and I can tell you it was a magnificent experience. From the theatre of the venues with all the dressing up and New Romantic vibe to the music...they were a superb band live and really had a strong and dedicated following, which was reflected in the turnout at their reunion. I almost caught one of the drumsticks they threw into their crowd during their famous drum line up sessions near the end of their shows...but it hit me on the head and some other guy got it that day. I do miss those days. Best concert I saw of them was at the Dominion Theatre in London where they did a one off fancy dress affair..it was marvellous and had one of the Royal Ballet dancing to this during Billies violin part...magical.
They did not like touring America back then. I saw bands like Frankie & Icehouse but never Ultravox. Midge came to the Ritz in NYC to promote The Gift and I jumped on that but... that was it for the US.
Владимир Круглов Here was the gig www.setlist.fm/setlist/ultravox/1984/dominion-theatre-london-england-53cf6fb5.html It was a one off charity affair and midge wore a kilt on stage...Chris Cross had a bikers outfit. Brilliant performance, crystal clear voice. I wish I would have been there in the crowd, but instead I was watching it on my tv in Australia. The 80s had the most diverse and best bands.
@@nista67 christ. didn't want him in Ultravox LOL. I did used to wonder if the vox would've made another classic lineup album had it not been for Live Aid... (maybe a bit selfish... it was quite something!)
Occasionally you will see someone try and attempt this song at a Karaoke. Fail miserably. Then you realise what a great voice Midge Ure has. That aside, this to me, is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.
It's about damned time this haunting MASTERPIECE be made available (again). This version of Vienna is the one we fell in love with. Thanks for posting it.
I was lucky enough to have seen Ultravox live at the Kabuki Theater in San Francisco in the early 1980s. One of the best concerts I have ever seen, and since this was a small venue, the show was up close and personal. Wow!... I still get chills remembering it...
When I was a kid the song scared me for some reason... now I regard it as one my all time favourite songs. Also my 10 and 6 year old love the song, betting it out in the car when driving them to school.
Unbelievable. I have listened to this song hundreds of times. Listening and watching this gave me the same tingling feeling I got when I first heard it way back when. I have to be the luckiest person in the world or something.
A song that still sends a shiver down my spine and a tear to my eyes everytime decades later, now that is pure magic. Beautifuly haunting and poignant at the same time. Always a timeless classic. Oct 2021 🙏❤😎😀😎🏴
gorgeous isn't it ...... RIP Chris Cross, who co-wrote this masterpiece
I was not there, but I miss it.
Same here. Brilliant.
I was born a 14 years after but I miss it.
I do as well, now Chris has gone forever but never forgotten.

Probably the masterpiece of the 80s

I remember when I first heard this 40 years ago. So mystic and soulful, it was and still is my anthem. Thanks for the memories Ultravox! M.E. in Texas
All thanks to Conny Plank's Kraut studio close to my home town Hennef

This is one of my fav song, im 27 year old from Mexico.
One of my favourites too, 45 from Australia
No autotune, no back tracks... There's no tricks here. Just truth
Definitely effects on his voice…
Just talent
His voice is bathed in effects lmao
I dare anyone to name a better band that this one....pure class!!! I could watch Ultravox/Midge Ure videos 24/7 and never get bored!!!!
If only we could get the full concert footage of this performance!!
Somebody somewhere must have it!!
R.I.P Chris, a truely lovely guy!!
Year 2023 and still getting goosebumps every time I listen to this classic...

Midge was the unappreciated force behind Live Aid. Yet Bob G, utterly bereft of talent, ended up a multimillionaire.
And an undeserved knighthood......that should've gone to Midge!
True, very true; but Bob isn't 'utterly bereft of talent' he's just a bit musically ... meh...

This is by far the best version of Vienna. Sounds amazing. Wow!
My all time favorite song since 1980.... And I'll never forget when I saw them playing it on stage for the first time.

The sound at this gig was quite Incredible for 1981. The drum sound is magnificent played from my Naim uniti Star in 2024.
Incredible voice. I was about 6 years old in 1980 but I remember this song on the radio.
He lived just along the road from me in Blantyre/Cambuslang although I hardly knew him tbh. A much under appreciated voice imo, great singer.

Its hard to believe its 43 years ago. Its sounds amazing. I saw midge live in 2023 and he still sounds amazing.
I always loved Warren's drum sounds. His combination of acoustic & electric drums, & drum machines is really over the top 🥁🎶🥁🎶🥁
Back to the time when singers were gentlemens going on stage in white shirts and trousers. And the music was even better than appearance!
