Lyrics:
We walked in the cold air
Freezing breath on a window pane
Lying and waiting
A man in the dark in a picture frame
So mystic and soulful
A voice reaching out in a piercing cry
It stays with you until
The feeling has gone, only you and I
It means nothing to me
This means nothing to me
Oh, Vienna
The music is weaving
Haunting notes, pizzicato strings
The rhythm is calling
Alone in the night as the daylight brings
A cool empty silence
The warmth of your hand and a cold grey sky
It fades to the distance
The image has gone, only you and I
It means nothing to me
This means nothing to me
Oh, Vienna
This means nothing to me
This means nothing to me
Oh, Vienna

59 here. Now in 2024 like back then 😍😍😍
I'm just so freaking blessed to have had all the fun of the 80s you can never repeat the brilliant music atmosphere and amazing life we lived people don't have a clue unless you have lived it ❤️❤️❤️❤️ xxx
One of the most atmospheric songs of its time.. .
😢FUCK!! The shear audacity of this song makes me CRY… UGLY CRY 😭
You mean of ALL time!
That part where the beat picks up & the violins come in, my God, bloody magical.
I couldn't have said it any better 👏
@@teztickles6257 good, very good
This bit of the song is so technical for 1981 I don't know if there were any commercial sequencers or MIDI were available,
if they were it would have cost a fortune. I was only 10 when I heard this.... Sunday night top 20 , it was something
special right off the bat, Passing Strangers has a section like this but more of an Arpeggio effect.
Ultravox were way ahead of anyone else in the Uk for synths for 1981.
The MIDI wasn’t around so they had to rehearsal endlessly to get the timing right

Named our daughter Vienna after this very song, she turned 20 yesterday. Fantastic song, still moves me…
You've both got great taste, my sister is also named Vienna, or 'Vi' for short she was 20 last month ^^
Well done!! 😊

good job you're not a black lace fan - she'd be called Agadoo
That's beautiful. What a great name. I love it when inspiration comes from the things we love and cherish. God bless your daughter.
One of the best pop songs EVER! It's 2023 & it still sounds great.
There's a guy at my work called Harvey Henna. We call him Ultravox.

"A beautiful song that ends like a tragic waltz in Vienna." 😢
Very beautiful voice of Midge Ure.❤
The cost of making the video clip of this masterpiece was considered one of the most expensive ones of the world. And it was worthy. God, how i miss the 80s.
For a first single too if I remember. Mind you that whole album was bloody fabulous. Not a bad song on it.
@@tkps Right!!!
40 years.....only seems like yesterday! Loved it when I was 11 years old and love it even more at 51. Midge Ure you are an absolute legend and thank you for bringing us this classic,I’m so glad I was able to fully experience the 80s music scene!
true words, Mark!!!!!!
I remember it like it was yesterday. How have so many years slipped by and I never noticed. Great song, great voice, great group.
I was 13 when it was released and my cousins played it to me, I was moved intensely and do think it's the sound of the 80's.
Amen. Makes me so glad I was a teenager in the 80's
Yep this tune is king a beast of a tune you may say oh yea my son loves it to James bye haha oh viena
I am just about to turn 71yrs old next Saturday and Vienna still sounds fantastic musks today can learn a lot by listening to Vienna,it is absolutely brilliant song writing.

Best to you Doug. Cheers and enjoy. Nick
16 years old when this came out,I was just starting clubbing in Australia OMG what a time to be a young guy partying to music like this.
To Chris, always admired your tasteful bass playing. RIP. UK 🇬🇧
Imagine seeing this in your early teens on Top of the pops the deep bass thumping out from the wooden television cabinet
That was our life in the 80s on a Thursday night
New Wave & New Romantic era ... seen Ultravox live and they are brilliant. Miss the 80s.
New Wawer& new romantic
I learnt the violin when I was a youngest, married a pianist and have always liked violins and piano together. Really outstanding for the New Wave period, incorporating a classical theme too. The Beatles and ELO did the same.
Saw Midge about 15 years ago in Philly at some 80s tour. When he sang this we all held our breath, then he hit the "Vienna!" bit and nailed it. We roared with applause and he looked very moved by it. ❤
One of the best pieces of music ever written.

For me also the video probally the best ever- and the song not too far behind
The video is also good
R.I.P Chris Cross bass player and co writer of this majestic masterpiece
One of those songs where I wish I had a massive sound system, a lonely house in the middle of nowhere, volume high and let that voice just poke holes in my soul.
Yep. have the sound system, but not the house in the middle of nowhere, so my neighbor gets to enjoy 80's Brit music he's never heard.
good headphones will work very well
Yeah..🙃
@@jond5842I’ve got bestest headphones on for this.
Why not go to Let's Rock Scotland or Rewind Scotland/England and hear Midge in the flesh on a massive sound system? He's still got it...
Some songs are not just "songs"... they are essential part of a life and will never be forgotten. Thanks for this one!
Over 30 years ahead of its time. This song is pure excellence Should have been best song at the Grammys.
Midge Ure his vocal range incredible
I. Still have this album
Piano and violin amazing through this track
Totally haunting, both of them. Classic Ultravox!
The best of the best.
Correct. 👍
What’s up Patrycia. 😘
Still gives me tingles after all these years. Will always be a number one to me
Ah, shaddap you face
Look no further you've just found THE best song that ever graced the charts.
Still a fantastic song to this day! Midge Ure was a gorgeous looking man back then 😊👏
Oooooh yes. I had the hots for him at the time. But there were so many gorgeous men in pop music in the 80s. I was a teenage girl in England during the 80s so I was damn lucky.
I'm 47 this year and still love this song beautiful music
Bloody classic who's still rocking this in 2023?

George Martin, the producer of the Beatles, worked with only one band again and that was Ultravox. Very proud that I followed this magnificent four by my 15, and that means all of my life.
Hmmm... what about America? There are others too. Read wikipedia.
Yes, but I only follow European music.

Paul McCartney, Cheap Trick, UFO.
I was just in Vienna for a tech conference and all the way from the airport and back again, I could only sing and hum this song to myself and in video clips that I sent to friends and family. Absolute classic!
I’d go to Vienna just because of this song, The Third Man, and Sachertorte.
Sachertorte. Also known as the original "Death by Chocolate"
@@smhorse my sachertorte tastes great but looks like a cowflop 🥺
40 years old & this still gives me goosebumps when that that beat picks up & the violins start...
43 years almost
This will FOREVER be an absolute MASTERPIECE. This song, imho - is everything a song should be, or as friend once said to me in the studio where I was working on an album with my old band "You know you've got something when you get goosebumps just listening to it!" Ahhh, to have a time machine to go back to 1980 and relive EVERYTHING again...
This invokes a strong memory I see.
What wasn't a masterpiece is that stupid song Shaddap You Face, yet it would seem lots of idiotic people thought it was worthy of No.1 in the UK, relegating this song to No.2. Sh!t, even John Lennon got bumped by that stupid song by Joe Dolce.
It’s magic video... It’s magic voice... It’s excellent! No more words...
Many memories of great times, loving this now classic in my teens.
Farewell Chris Cross and deep gratitude for co-writing one of the best songs ever.
Great times well wow the Falklands war
Epic masterpiece, and that video still chills me as much as it did in 1981 . Very lucky I was a teen in the 80s and experienced that decade of wonderful music
We were the lucky ones. I was 13 and not a care in the world.
The greatest song of all time, by the best band of all time, with the video spruced up. What's not to like?! :)
Perfect. Happy days.
Took out the traces leading the horse though, at 18 seconds in. There on the DVD release I have, and coincidentally was thinking of this track today as well, pulled out the DVD to play it as well.
It's very good... but nowhere near that good. I do not know what the 'best band of all time' or the ''greatest song of all time' is, but I do know that this is not it.
@@phealy02 To me 'the best song ever by the best band ever' would be if the Stranglers with Hugh Cornwell singing did a cover of 'Imitation of Life'. Maybe as it's now impossible, an AI might be able to create that in the future 🤔
That’s a big call but I do appreciate it more now than before …
Maybe best song of all time ... greatest band....not so sure , but you have good taste , be happy
Stevie
There are excellent songs then there are classics that live the test of time like a Roman built road. Thanks all in Ultravox for what you have given us. We thank you.
Isn't it amazing that this song is from the early 80's yet it's sound was so ahead of its time. It still stands up today.
Yes indeed!
It "still stands up"? Because in your mind new stuff "kicks ass" and anythng older than ten years "sucks"?
Why do I get the sense you've never read a book?
@@kentjensen4504 Uh...I haven't regularly listened to Pop Radio since the 90's dude. I grew up IN the 80's you know. I prefer 80's Pop over any of this dreck they dare call music today.
P.S. My favorite book series is The Lord of the Rings Trilogy FYI. I also love The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy. What do you think I am? A Millennial? I'm 50 years old Boo.
Almost a 70s song because it first appeared on the Vienna album, released in July 1980, so it must have been recorded early in 1980 or earlier.
@@kentjensen4504 Why would you assume he has never read a book? To say a song from 1980's still holds up given the innovations and growth in electronic music is not an insult in any way and its also true.

Shocked to hear of Chris’s loss. This seems like a most appropriate place to celebrate his life and a legacy of incredible music. A fitting line in Vienna for today: “the daylight brings a cool, empty silence” 😞
Sooooo beautiful! Was a young teenage girl when this came out. The 50s through the 80s set the highest impossible bar for the best of the best natural, real phenomenal - blues, soul, rock and roll, soft rock ballads, rock opera, rockabilly, and so many other gorgeous talents that take our breathe away 💖💖💖💖💖
The music they have today dosnt compare
I adore this song. I came upon it by accident in the 90s on a compilation 80s cd that I bought. It’s one of those songs that is hauntingly beautiful and stays with you. I’ll forget about it for a while and then someone plays it and it just comes flooding back. This was their best song hands down and video was actually pretty cool for 1981.

When the 70s was well and truly gone in my head ..80, 81, 82...there is always ovelap in the decades but this is firmly in the 80s
I always think they should play the Vienna song by ultravox when aeroplanes land in this incredible city. In my view this is quite simply one of the best pop songs of the 1980's. I especially like the instrumental bit with all the strings.
This song is a timeless masterpiece 😊
One of the most unique and brilliant pieces of the era
The harmony makes my brain melt. This song feels like a huge question mark - oh, why does this sound that way? and why this emotional shift so suddenly? and why...? And I cannot stop, I have to listen again and again.
Total classic song . I loved the 80's era . Very good music . They don't make them like this anymore .
Definitely one of the most epic music videos of all time.
All of a sudden - I want to visit Vienna.
During the 80's' of course.
It's a hauntingly beautiful song. Midge Ure' vocal range is so underrated. A true 80s classic. Oh, to relive the greatest decade in music.
I just finished Season 2 of *Vienna Blood* and it's

And Midge's voice soaring on that note is thrilling!

RIP Chris Cross. 😪
Thank you for the wonderfull music.
Pure perfection.
This needs to be 4K’d! Song and video are both masterpieces!
My husband good-naturedly teased me about my love of this song, but he passed away suddenly 8 months ago and I'd kill to hear his impassioned if silly "Vienna!" again. I loved the song for a couple of decades before we met, and I love it more now for the two decades I associate with him and this song now. "Haunting notes, pizzicato strings" was always my standout line, though.
This song as an instrumental would have been a tour de force. Add the astonishing chorus and we have a masterwork that has stood the test of time.
I only discovered this song thanks to Bret Easton Ellis' "The Shards", now it's my personal soundtrack to that novel. Thank you!
What a song!!! What a video!!! SUPERB!!!
seriously, what a climax this song has ( no pun intended), this song has everything that current charts songs have long since lost, heart and soul.
Back in the 80's the horse was very symbolic.
Now, if you run into a horse strolling free on your way home: 'Yeah whatever, not my problem.'
Such a great song. Does anyone here remember in the early 80s those double lp's of greatest hits of the year? Most of them were a case of buy volume 1 and get volume 2 free. There was one called 'Chart Hit's 81' I bought it just to get this song, from Woolworths 😊
Video made in Covent Garden as the record label were too tight to fly them out to Vienna!!!
Still should be a number one!! So So good!!
I'd never heard of this band or any of their songs until I caught Midge Ure's fascinating interview on Professor of Rock, now I'm hooked! This is one of those songs that you can FEEL, even if you don't necessarily relate or even understand
Same thing brought me.
Isn't the Professor a top guy?
