  • I'm excited to share this moment, when I got my 1981 Honda GL1100 Goldwing on the road for the first time since 2014 possibly?
    It has been a lot of work but it has been well worth it!
    I hope you enjoy!

    First thing you took 2 or 3 years off that starter, second it has a choke? Nice job. I didn't watch the whole series. I've owned 8 goldwings since I retired from the military in 88 guess what they all required choking when cold. I seen a 78 start easier than your bike having been Buried in snow up to the head light.

    • @DustyDingus
      @DustyDingus  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes it has choke, which was on. The carb bowl was empty and the fuel lines dry. I mentioned the need for priming in the video. Prefilling the bowl would've been a good idea in hindsight.
      What would you have done to prime it? I've had some suggest a little starting fluid but others will assert that's a bad idea for different reasons. Obviously it starts right up if it has fuel, and would do so buried in snow...
      I've since replaced the starter contactor and fixed the wiring for it and it starts even better now. Over 7k miles since this video and I'm loving this bike.
      Thanks for watching and commenting

      @DustyDingus my mistake didn't know the bowls were empty. Overhauled one myself back in my 30's yes it was decades ago. Retired now. My bike will be Saturday I'm going to post a video. ✌️

    Don't leave it on the side stand for extended periods, if you do it will smoke out of the low cylinders on the kickstand side. Honda changed the oil ring design to fix this issue, but no fix is perfect for this particular issue.

    Way to go ! ! ! ! You DID it : ) I wondered a bit when I watched first few videos, but you obviously knew what you were/are doing... I have an 82 1100 that is not a running bike now but your project & videos made it all seem so attainable. thanks for taking the time to video all this .. ENJOY From the first videos, did you actually USE that BMW gas tank? and did you change the air shocks to regular shocks... I thought the new shocks you bought had springs & no boots? Either way.. it all looks great. Glad you're enjoying it.

    Thanks for another great video Mr. DustyDingus! I purchased an '80 GL1100 some months back and have been refurbishing it here in AZ while you have been refurbishing yours. In fact, your great videos have been a great help for me along the way in my GL 1100 journey. Your bike turned out great and I am confident you will enjoy getting to know her as a "complete" bike...even sorting out some of the inevitable quirks that come with any restoration. I too ditched the flimsy plastic front fender for a steel one (from a GL 1000). I especially like the fender you chose because it's a bit sportier. What fender are you using? I might look for one myself! Ride Safe up there in CO!

    • @DustyDingus

      Thank you! And I am very glad to be a help to you!
      The fender is off of an 81 CX500. It's not in perfect shape but it was cheap at a local bone yard. One day I'll stumble on one without scratches and dings, maybe. You do have to kinda stretch it out a bit to bolt to the forks but it wasn't major. It also has perfect brake line brackets, you just have to borrow a 2nd bracket and rubber from another CX500 because they only had one front brake and the GL1100 has 2. The spot/threads are already in both sides of the fender though

    • @nativerhythm1564
      @nativerhythm1564 2 роки тому

      @@DustyDingus Thanks for the front fender info. I actually located a CX500 fender on EBay and grabbed it. It will need to be re-chromed, but will look a bit sleeker than the GL1000 fender. On another note, I re-built the OEM carbs when refurbishing my GL. I am wondering how you are liking the VW single carb conversion you installed?

    I'll need to replace my Brake Rotors (Front and rear) as they are under the limit.

    Thank you for your help

    • @DustyDingus

      These are the originals. I drilled the holes after making a pattern on my 3D printer, chamfered the holes a bit and then sent them to TrueDisk LLC to have them resurfaced. Still well above minimum.
      All of the aftermarket replacements I found were way too expensive.
      I'd recommend getting on ebay, ask for measurements before purchasing. Or find a local bike salvage yard and take some micrometers with you.
      If none of that pans out I have a local Goldwing guy that would likely have some, email me at dustydingusyt@gmail.com if you need my help with that

    5 mls. of Gas under the Air Filter would have got a much quicker start.

    • @DustyDingus
      @DustyDingus  14 днів тому

      Yeah or prefilling the bone dry carburetor bowl instead of waiting for the mechanical pump to pull fuel through dry everything and fill the bowl. As it goes, hindsight is 2020. No sticking though. Still using that starter and have done nothing at all to it

    • @DustyDingus
      @DustyDingus  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you!
      Tom at TrueDisk LLC resurfaced these rotors into the beautiful rotors you see today. Fronts had some grooves.
      The rotors are the originals, I measured them (diameter, thickness, runout - done on a CMM) and made patterns in FreeCAD, then designed templates that I could use to center punch the holes to be drilled and printed them on my 3D printer. Clamped template to rotors, punched holes, spent a while drilling holes and countersinking. Then a few days calling around to find out that Tom (TrueDisk LLC) is the only one that can/will do them and the only one with the equipment to do it RIGHT. I shipped the rotors off to him after a few phone conversations and got them back in like a week and a half? Definitely worth the cost, I am SO pleased. Absolutely no regrets 10 out of 10 would recommend.
