Caution about birth-year watches though they sound great. Vintage dealer Eric Wind -- who used to work as senior specialist for Christie's -- during his talk at the Horological Society of NY eight months ago (it's on YT) said the number one mistake he's seen vintage collectors make is going for a birth-year watch. They choose an example because the year of manufacturing emotionally sways their decision -- over an example in a better condition. Your birth-year watch means nothing to the next owner, and it's often a decision filled with regret.
Another mistake he highlighted is to choose rarity over condition -- or to focus on full-sets

I find the modern Subs soulless. I have a handful of Subs ranging from the 1960s up til 2006.
On top of this, I recently I got a 'ruined ' 5512 from 1964, for next to nothing (!). Rolex had replaced the dial and hands with fresh lumed pieces: service dial. Great for me! I'm having the OG plexiglass replaced right now with modern plexiglass (TrueDome) to turn this watch into a vintage-but-new daily beater.

I predict the next version of the Submariner. I hope they bring it down to 39mm, 20mm lug width, and ease off the bling. I wish they engraved the case back with superlative chronometer officially certified, and keep the dial as a two liner. Keep the maxi dial and matte black dial. Perhaps fully graduated ceramic bezel. Make Rolex a wearable everyday tool again.

Hi Austin, you’re back to your brilliant, informative best ! You’ve explained this conundrum perfectly (imho). I had similar thoughts regarding my watches (a modern ceramic and a 14060m and I chose to keep the older version. The reason why I chose to sell the newer watch was, it looked too blingy. I’m much happier with the 2006 2 line version and wear it on its noisy bracelet or a French nato and a rubber b, if I need a change. It’s very
versatile and comfortable. Hope this helps your unhappy customer. Cheers from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Hi , thank you for sharing your thoughts. I bought a sub in 2005 and I did not use it to much because I did not like the bracelet and the way it locks. Sold it two years ago and bought a sub no date last year at my local AD. This watch to me is much better. A solid bracelet that does not rattle. Yes , the bezel is a bit shiny but that’s ok. One should be very careful in buying an older Rolex. Especially the bracelets these days were not really great. At the end of the day it comes to taste and budget. 😊😊

I understand his feelings. I bought a new 16610 in 2001. When I put the watch on at the Ad for the first time, I said to the sales lady, "It's fantastic to put on this new Submariner, but frankly I prefer the older models with the matte black dial." Anyway I learned to appreciate that 16610 and still have it. But honestly, I still think about getting a vintage sub. There is something special about the acrylic crystal, aged maxi tritium lume and matte black dial. The glossy dial does not have the same character. I think it's possible to get a vintage 5512 or 5513 in go0d condition and with a qualified watchmaker, he can make it fully function and waterproof.

I wouldn't pay the money for a vintage sub. Pre ceramic will give the look without the fragility. I'd stick with what he has. If he's a young man he and the watch will become vintage together. Great knowledge displayed by Austin as usual.

14060 / M Is an amazing choice and my personal favourite Submariner of all time. The non-ceramic bezel, lug holes and double clasp are more desirable for me and more ideal in my opinion in a daily watch. Plus the additional advantages of a modern movement, case and dial of the ref. 14060 prove that it's the best of both worlds in my humble opinion.

Never meet your heroes. I eventually managed to buy my grail, a 41mm sub date. It just didn't do anything for me. I've since sold it and purchased a 16570 Exp 2 polar, and what a difference, i love it. The older piece just feels right, its not as flashy plus it has the added feature of second time complication.

there are very few 1976 submariner 5512s and 5513s out there, especially all original and in good condition, in japan or anywhere else in the world, at any price. so if i were la, i'd get something like a 14060 which is still reasonably plentiful so you can actually buy one and wear it soon. and after, there's nothing stopping la from continuing to look out for that elusive 1976 sub. i totally understand la not liking his brand new sub. it's too big and shiny and not the tool watch that the sub was born as. i also quit modern rolex and now only lust after vintage ones. good luck la!

I wear a vintage 1665 Rail Dial but you know, shouldn't really wear old ones in the drink... Plus at night the lume doesn't work. It was my dad's he wore it first over 45 years. As for looks at I prefer the vintage styling without all that white gold on the dial. I also like the bubble acrylic, although it scratches so you need a tube of polywatch on hand. Servicing also won't be cheap.

My preference would be a 5 digit Submariner, 14060M two line. All the looks of an older 4 digit Sub with the reliability of a newer model. I do lean towards a tritium dial with matching hands showing some creamy goodness to give it a more vintage feel. Good luck with your search La.

The current 124060 is next on my list and having tried one on recently I can agree with La that it is a bit flashy and lacks some character. I do think that with a decade or two of solid use this character will develop on the overall look and feel of the piece with the exception of the ceramic bezel which is likely to stay pretty shiny. If its vintage La wants there is only one way to proceed. If he can afford to keep the modern sub and get a vintage one at the same time I think that would be best to understand the look and feel before having to part with his current piece.

How about a guy born on May 13? I've come close a few times to a birth year 5513 as the perfect watch from a numerology significance viewpoint. I still haven't found the right combination of originality, condition, and box/papers for that reference and year. Came close once but it was for sale at Bob's and I've not been a fan. The particular watch was sold at the Navy Exchange, in I think the Philippines (in the late 1960s). Probably should have pulled the trigger on it back then regardless of Bob's but I was sure I'd find another...

I think this guy got into Rolex because of the influence or the idea of owning/wearing a Rolex. Perhaps not enough experience wearing or trying out Rolex on the wrist. Maybe this gentlemen wants character from his Submariner. IMO he should look into pre-ceramic or vintage 5513 in wearable condition. The way I see it new ceramic modern Rolex will not look good or does not look good in honest everyday scratched loved worn condition. The modern Rolex look too much like a sport watch with luxury looks. Luxury is meant to look new and clean. Tool watches are meant to look honest. Yes they are way better built, the material is perfect, the movements are superior, and all that we can agree on. We get Rolex evolves little by little. However, modern Rolex will not age like pre-ceramic. Modern Rolex will look the same even if you beat it up. Unlike pre-ceramic Rolex watches all age different. In 5-20 year all pre-ceramic Rolex watches will look different. No two are alike... look at any 5513 Subs today. I felt the same when I bought a ceramic Submariner Date 2014. I hardly ever wore that watch. In fact it's one of my biggest purchase regrets to this day. Fortunately I sold it for more than what I paid for,. No regrets in selling. I just couldn't connect with that watch. I fell into the hype and it cost me at first.

Great video, Austin. If I were him, I’d keep the 124060. They’re (still)hard to get at retail, and it’s the pinnacle, as you said. But I’d also get a 14060M, 4-liner with the engraved rehaut. Why, you ask? Well because it’s the last of the non-ceramics and looks fresh without being obnoxious like the ceramic Sub.

As a long time pre-ceramic Sub wearer, my 124060 took a long time to win me over (18 months!). It is heavier, less comfortable and more obvious aesthetically. That comes down to the shine and visual weight of the bezel, which makes the watch does wear substantially bigger than pre-ceramics. I can imagine that if you preferred a more classic wrist proportion or you had smaller wrists (I'm a 6'2" marine biologist!), these irks might prove insurmountable. Likewise if you wanted the smarter dress versatility of the older watches. But I stuck with it and slowly the 124060 won me over. It is a fantastic watch, a pure tool and my default diving watch. But day-to-day? Not for me. 16600 takes that role.
But I reckon your advice is sound - La should wear the watch day and night for several months to see if he gets used to it. If not, then I agree, modern 5 digit all day if its going to be a daily wear, 5512/13 if its gonna be a safe queen.
