      Nah, Of All the major reviewers’ takes on this album, Jon is easily the one I agree with the most, while I found it a huge disappointment, I certainly don’t think it’s a 2/10 like Melon said and it sure as hell isn’t an 8/10 imo, also I get that taste is subjective but Saturday, Formidable, and Bounce Man In best tracks, really? 2.5/5 (which converts to 5/10) is pretty spot on

      My opinion after hearing Trench: it's overly repetitive and loses steam after the first five or so tracks. Boring.
      Fantano: "hey this is actually pretty good"
      My opinion after hearing Scaled and Icy: this is an easy as hell listen that's still engaging front to back, a nice little breath of fresh air, way more enjoyable than Trench was.
      Fantano: "hey this is garbage"
      Why does Fantano make it so hard for me to like him??

      @@finnmckentyslanderaccount409 I don’t know what you mean by “tastemakers”, but I haven’t been able to get into Radiohead. I’m mostly into metal and prog right now (which is why this is far from the first time I’ve been super in disagreement with Fantano - his negative review of Parallax II by BTBAM, his mostly middling stance on Steven Wilson, his casual dismissal of The Dear Hunter a while ago... I do respect him, but god, I really don’t align).
      To be fair I’ve disagreed with Mark on two of the three bands above before too, but I at least understand his opinions better.

    As much I still entirely disagree with your takes on Trench... I'm SO glad I've finally listened to a Scaled and Icy review where the reviewer understands the lyrics (and no, I don't mean the 'DEMA' stuff. I mean the actual themes and meanings of the songs).
    Weirdly, I will also add that I disagree with your take that this is the most commercial sounding of their work.
    Good Day, Mulberry Street and Bounce Man sound like something off an Elton John or Billy Joel record. Hell they might all fit in a musical to be honest!
    The Outside is an unsusual hip-hopy track, which seemingly intentionally never explodes with the 'drop' it threatens.
    No Chances speaks for itself. Redecorate is focuses too much on its intense and dark rap verses to be considered a 'top 40' sound.
    Lastly, Choker just sounds like something made by twenty one pilots in 2010. And therefore in no way is aiming to strike a chord with the modern sound palate.
    Conversely, Saturday is an overtly a 'top 40' sound. Formidable is light enough to be considered commerically aimed. Shy Away could arguably be considered that too. But overall, only at most three songs can be considered 'mainstream'.

    After listening to this album like dozens of times now, I gotta say that this is the TOP album I keep coming back to the most, and part of it is that this might be the best quarantine album (and by that I mean albums that have the quarantine as context and core). Even when Charli XCX made a great album, TOP takes this context and makes it work even better because of what the ending does- showing what is gonna happen after this pandemic ends and what is gonna happen to Joseph when he has to go back to the real world. Redecorate has been the song that had stuck with me the most because of the themes and no joke, it might be the best song that had been released in 2021.
    I also really like this album cuz bangers like Choker and Shy Away exist.

And fun fact, I had gut feeling that you might be really into this record because it reminded of Blurryface, and I know how much you like that album, so it would make sense if you liked SAI as well. As for what I think about this album- welp, Blurryface is my favourite Twenty One Pilots record, but I don't think I like SAI as much as any of their last 3 records, even if I'm not as into Trench as most people I think its best moments outshine best SAI moments, and same with Vessels. Still, I thought it was a good record, liked it more on relistens, for me it's a solid 7/10, pretty good, but I get people who aren't into it. Good review, Mark :)

      I think it’s pretty telling that Mark talks about “after a dozen or so listens”... SAI is a grow on you album and anyone who listens to it multiple times I personally feel is going to rate it higher than someone who listens to it once. A large part of that is the craftsmanship Tyler puts into the lyrics and the depth of the art which you don’t pick up on from the first time through.
      So tell me, did Fantano actually listen to the album more than once? I highly doubt it based on his rating and the way he dismissed the lyrics in almost every song. 🤷‍♂️

      I'm right there with you, I feel like its a cop-out to say its "propaganda" in the world of dema, I feel like if they wanted to do that it should have been longer with end songs that explain that propaganda and fights it or release another album right after the live stream that's just as "short" (I personally feel it's short but I do recognize that 11 songs in the terms of music-making are quite a significant amount). It was extremely shallow and a lot of the messages in songs didn't go as deep as they could have, such as songs like mulberry street saying don't take drugs/medication which yeah I guess I get that but some people need it. I don't know, I'm torn I love how the songs sound but a lot of them don't feel like twenty one pilots and feel rushed, what's everyone else's opinion? TLDR: Good production and use of instruments, bad or shallow messages, feels rushed not great not terrible.

  • @Props
    @Props 3 роки тому +3

    This is an outstanding review. I, of course, respect Anthony's opinion on this topic, but I honestly felt like he was missing the point in some places. I wasn't sure if that was just me being a little defensive, but I legitimately felt that he misinterpreted certain parts of the album. However, again, that might be because I really went into this WANTING to love it. I can 100% see the criticisms for this album. If I was to have a long conversation with someone who vehemently hates it, I doubt I'd find myself disagreeing more than agreeing. But there is a strange dark tone to this record that really comes through when you give it the time to grow on you, especially with those closing two songs. It helps develop the lore a lot in a very positive way, and I'm glad this album exists.
    I'd personally give it a 6/10. There are definitely some tracks on here that are HUGE misses for me, such as Saturday, Mulberry Street, and Bounce Man. But for all the misses, there are equally big hits. No Chances, Redecorate, Shy Away, Choker, Formidable, and Never Take It are FANTASTIC tracks in my opinion.
    Again, this review is really good. Nice job, Mark!

    Feels like a huge step backwards from Trench especially in regards to maturity in songwriting and even production. I don’t always agree with Fantano, but I definitely agree when he said Tyler approached a lot of “hot topics” with the most asinine and surface level analysis of things. I think that’s why I started to drift more toward The 1975 when I was in college and my early 20s. I increasingly found Tyler’s lyrics cringy and like this is a guy that’s not really SEEN shit. He’s definitely felt some shit, but his approach to life feels very sheltered verses someone like Matty who literally was a hard drug addict and has talked about his battle with things like drugs as well as mental health struggles. I hate to say it, but I think Trench might have been their peak. It’s downhill from here, folks.

    if it was anyone else, scaled and icy would have been alright. but twenty one pilots, a band known for their dark themes and multilayered lyrics, coming out with this? it felt almost insulting. it isn't so bad, but it's a 5 for me. i enjoyed it, and i listen to it, but some songs i can't listen to at all as they just grate on my ears. there's no natural flow, the lyrics are either confusing or ridiculously easy to analyze, and i can never tell if he's writing from personal experience or from the narrative of DEMA.

    • @lostecho4394
      @lostecho4394 3 роки тому

      This album is often covering just as many dark themes as trench or blurryface, and the lyrics all have several different meanings and are very multi layered, it's just a bit more cyrptic and harder to see the hidden meanings at times. It's very intentional that it's hard to fully interpret some of the deeper themes, as in the story they are supposed to be controlled by DEMA, so they have to hide meaning rather than openly expressing them. The album largely covers the concepts of denial, escapism through drugs, Media propaganda, and other similarly dark themes. Don't let the happy sounds and bright colors fool you.

    • @thehecticchannel8054
      @thehecticchannel8054 3 роки тому +1

      @@lostecho4394 you really don't need to mansplain the album i've listened to at least five times to me. "Homie just sued me"? "You should bounce, bounce, bounce, man"? You're never going to convince me with a straight face that those are the same caliber as "and the ground taunts my wings, plummet as i sing" or "I created this world to feel some control, destroy it if I want". Sure, some of the songs like Redecorate, The Outside, or even Shy Away had lyrics with deeper meanings, but in all of the previous albums even the lighter sounding or less serious songs didn't sound like an insult to songwriting like Bounce Man did or parts of Good Day. This band has had lighter sounding albums, like Vessel and Regional at Best, but those lyrics were complicated and clever. Most of the lyrics in SAI are either embarrassingly simple or a lot easier to take apart and understand than previous lyrics. The Outside and Mulberry Street are two particularly easy songs to analyze, even if they do have some more interesting lyrics. You don't need to talk down to me, bud, I've been here just as long as you and probably know more about the band. Being a fan doesn't mean you blindly accept what you know isn't as good, it means you recognize when what your favorite creators put out is lacking. There's no need to cover up constructive criticism.

      @lostecho4394 3 роки тому

      @@thehecticchannel8054 Lol mansplain. What a stupid word. I'm not trying to "mansplain" anything. I'm simply pointing out that there are very many deeper themes running throughout that are intentionally easy to miss. Most of the lyrics are multilayered with multiple hidden meanings as well. It's intended to appear shiny, bright and light on the outside, but reveal the deeper themes when you dig a little deeper, not just by making happy sounds with sad lyrics, but by also making the story and concept of it cryptic and hard to see at first, which is intentional and fits with the lore that they have been building and that is included under the surface of this album. Good day is literally a song about losing everything and then living in complete denial and acting as if you are super happy. If you take me simply explaining that there are plenty of dark themes throughout and that there are multilayered lyrics with multiple meanings, and that the whole album is about someone living in denial and using drugs and self delusion to escape, until it all falls apart at the end and they commit to vialism, just in case you were missing that, which your comment seemed to imply and which a lot of reviewers seemed to miss as well, as me talking down to you, then that is your issue, not mine. I was simply explaining my perspective of the album. Why are you so confrontational? like, calm down. I didn't even say that this album is anywhere near as good as trench musically or lyrically, because it's not. I was just pointing out that it is just incorrect to say that the lyrics aren't dark or multilayered. IDK what I typed that offended you so much. The concept takes quite a while to fully click and took the live-stream experience for me to fully get it. Most things about the album are very intentional to fit the narrative that they are telling that they are controlled by DEMA and this is a propaganda album.

      @@lostecho4394 if i seem offended, it's because you came onto my review and comment and pretended to know the album better than i did. i think it's rather obvious this is from the perspective of someone trapped, and you assuming that i didn't pick up on that seems like you are indeed talking down to me. i know it's difficult for you to grasp, but this album is not as good as the other ones, and the main gap in quality lies in the lyrics. you can pretend that every lyric they put out is extraordinarily complicated, but the fact is, most of the lyrics here aren't as good as they are in other works. most of them are straight up stupid. Bounce man for example has nothing deep in it. it's a surface song, and a bad one at that. if you don't like my opinion, you can refrain from talking to me, but i don't need you to "well actually" me as if you know better. it's okay to admit that some of their stuff sucks you know.

    • @lostecho4394

      @@thehecticchannel8054 I wasn't commenting on the quality tho. I agree that this album isn't as good as trench, vessel, or self titled. I was just pointing out that the claim that the lyrics aren't multilayered or that they don't cover dark subjects is incorrect. I replied to a comment. It's not a big deal. Calm down. I wasn't pretending to know the album better than you or talking down to you, so I'm sorry if it came across that way, I was just pointing out that the whole concept of the album would make the claim that there aren't dark topics or multilayered lyrics completely incorrect. Are they as well written here as on Trench or Vessel? No, I don't think so. But to claim they aren't there is just incorrect and that is all I was correcting. You even said yourself that you couldn't tell what was DEMA and what was about personal life, when the whole point is that its both through most of it which makes it pretty much all multilayered lyrically. I think bounce man is a pretty bad song, but even that one does actually seem to have a hidden meaning in it that ties into the story, it seems to either have something to do with Ned, or it seems like it might be a hidden message to escape DEMA with the banditos, but I will agree that there are definitely some weak lyrical moments on this record, and that is one of them. The way you wrote your comment just came across as if you didn't really get the whole concept of the album, just like the melon didn't. To say that the album doesn't cover dark themes or that the lyrics aren't multilayered directly implies that you are missing a lot. Now you have told me that isn't the case, that is fine, there is no need to get all offended. You seem to have a very fragile ego. I'm not trying to speak down to anyone or prove anything, just pointing something out. Not everything people say in response to you is an attack on your ego. How about you don't post stuff publicly online if you don't want people responding with their perspective? Because the reasons you stated for being offended really aren't good reasons, it's not a competition to see who knows the most about music or something, and they aren't accurate to my intentions anyway. I really wasn't trying to start a fight or talk down to you and IDK why you took it that way. I was simply replying to one of your points and pointing out why it isn't correct. It doesn't matter anyway, so hope you have a good day.

      Even Tyler knows he was foolish to post with something snarky. He should have stood his ground silently and continued to affirm mental health issues.

      @@ideasmatter4737 no. It was not foolish. Nobody has the right to demand someone speak on something regardless of their platform. Snarky is talking down to an issue. He made a joke and people got so butthurt about it because everyone has to affirm their beliefs so they can feel valid. What he should have done was stood his ground with his joke because that's what it was. A joke. And anyone who took it more seriously than that needs some serious help.

      Andrew Dallas I agree that once he made the post he should have stood by it. I think the post was unhelpful and unnecessary given the fragility of some of his fans.

      @@ideasmatter4737 what was unnecessary is demanding to know a grown mans opinion on a topic like race and racial injustice because you listen to his music. He was being constantly harassed about it so he made a joke to alleviate the tension. Those people are lucky they even got an "apology", it's more than they deserved.

    Good Day is honestly one of the worst to me. It sounds like the opening to a bad hallmark movie.

      I dislike Choker the most, it sounds really cliche and formulaic in terms of twenty one pilots, and it just sounds like a parody of twenty one pilots usually is.
