twenty one pilots - Trench - Indie pop/pop rock - Album Review
#twentyonepilots #Trench #TOP
Fantano rated a Twenty One Pilots album higher than you, we live in a simulation confirmed
youd think the makers of the simulation would be more subtle
Ikr lol
Respect your opinion, though imo this is miles better than anything they have ever put out on any level. Them moving away from the mainstream scene is a better fit for them, and I like the more ambitious sound they’re going for. This album is a strong 8 for me.
Imagine actually thinking Blurryface is better than both Vessel and Trench.
Like saying Attack of the Clones is the best of the prequels.
Well, all 3 of those TOP albums are great, and Revenge Of The Sith is the only good Star Wars prequel until Rogue One, so it's not much of a comparison.
fair
But Blurryface is the best of the three. It’s more like thinking Empire was the best of the original trilogy.
@@critica77y77 Not really. Blurryface was good but very pop-pandering for the most part. Trench felt more mature and aware.
@@critica77y77 Sorry but Blurryface was a fucking mess. While some tracks were good, the album had absolutely no focus. It went from electronic song, to pop song to dubstep reggae, to ukulele and it was not a coherent listen. It seemed like they just threw together everything they had and hoped something stuck. Plus to be honest, for every cool moment there is a dumb one. A lot of the songs have some stupid lines that take you out of it.
Vessel and Trench are much better listens. Not only is it a tighter experience, but the dumb parts are so minimal you don't even notice them. Vessel is much more catchy and clever while Trench is more mature and well produced. And the highlights in those albums are much bigger than the ones in Blurryface. There is no song there better than Trees, Guns for Hands, Holding on to You, Ode to Sleep, Car Radio or Chlorine, Jumpsuit, Levitate, Cut my Lip etc.. The only ones that stand out to me are Lane Boy and Goner.
Can we at least agree that the production was significantly better than Blurryface?
YES.
Agree
INSANELY better
I don't see how anyone could disagree with this.
He said that..
I feel that this album will age better than Blurryface and even Vessel, yes I said it. I like both of them, but I don't find myself wanting to come back to those albums. Ask me again in a couple years and I'll let you know if this album aged well.
u ight
:)
did it age well
Did it age well
@@2ndincommand350 Yes. I still come back to the album and it holds up better than all of Blurryface and some of Vessel
You really gave Blurryface a 9 and this a 7? Are the painkillers getting to you? Blurryface was a 6 or 7. This album is an 8 or 9.
SPOILERS!!!
blurryface was a damn 5
Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and his might not be like yours. Simple as that
Imo they are both 8
I somewhat agree, but it's still just his opinion
i am really surprised that you liked blurryface better than this
I disagree with their pop sensibilities being one of their best aspects. Their songwriting can get downright cheesy at certain points, especially when they bring on the Uke. A lot of their poppier tracks suffer from this (excluding their radio friendly alternative tracks like Stressed Out and Ride). The fact that they toned it down a bit shows significant maturity in both their songwriting and their production.
Imagine complaining that a love song for his wife is 'too cheesy'.
Blurryface was just ok... but some songs were just god awful. Vessel was exceptional but lacked in the presence of any kind of bass, thus it lacked a lot of weight. Trench imo is just right in between. Vessel had more ambition and blended genres better, but Trench songwriting and production is better than vessel and miles above Blurryface
Nico and the niners? Least favorite? This ain’t it chief.
I kid. This was their best album imo and no matter what they release, I wholeheartedly believe they will never top it. This will go down as their Folie a Deux or Pretty Odd
"This will go down as their Folie A Deux or Pretty Odd"
Pretty much on point. But if that were the exact case, Trench would have to be both criminally underrated and controversial enough to send the band into a 4 year long hiatus or a split lol
Sorry but agree to disagree. This is definitely their best album to date. It is consistent, fine-tuned, creative, fantastically composed and produced, and pleasantly poignant. I really adore this album and I say it's their most mature, serious and well-made album to date.
1. Trench
2. Vessel
3. Blurryface

Absolutely.

Trench is so thier worst album. They are letting their Religion show way to much.. It is nothing but a mess of a concept as album. Concept albums almost never work. This is no exception.
I feel like this is the album where they finally get to be adventurous and make interesting music. Their past efforts, I wasn't big on but they kicked off well. So does trench, and on top of it, it doesn't have a bad track on it. Maybe one that takes some time to grow, but none that suck ass by any means, unlike the past two efforts. At least an 8 for me. Y'all saying blurryface is miles better and that this pales in comparison are buggin like tarantulas. I don't think pop appeal is where they're the best. I feel like trench is the most suited album for a band like TOP. They sound better when they don't try too hard to be radio friendly like what they just couldn't shut up about on blurryface. I'm kinda surprised the clique didn't enjoy this as much as I or even brad taste in music did. I thought most fans were into the concept and story told through their music and the music too but also how the story enhanced it for most listeners. This provides all of the above taking away only pop appeal in return of a much more solid and no bullshit release.
Fan since vessel, i absolutely love this album so so so much and would even say it may be better than vessel (and obvs blurryface) though that ones still my favorite. Everyone ive seen besides this guy has absolutely loved it thus far. I totally agree that they sound better and more comfortable when not trying to stay radio friendly.
Honestly, this album completely changed my perception of tøp and now they're one of my favourite bands and this is rated among my favourite albums next to the wall, skeleton tree, and the downward spiral
Nice review, but I cant believe you scored it an AJR/10...that was unexpected
8/10
Best Tracks: “Morph”, “Chlorine”, “Neon Gravestones”, “My Blood”, “Jumpsuit”, “Bandito”, “Smithereens”, “Legend”
Worst Track: “Cut My Lip”
in my opinion, a lot of the fans might not like trench as much as blurryface or say how it "dulls in comparison" because so much of the fanbase was brought in by blurryface, so they don't always see how this less radio friendly style can be so good, because blurryface was vying a lot for that radio play (based on my understanding & listen of the album, that's personally what i think) & that's fine, but a group like twenty one pilots can do so much better then what they did with blurryface. albums like vessel & trench prove that, because they feel more authentic to what twenty one pilots style is. i think this album does miss some things like the meshing of multiple genres in one song which is very reminiscent of vessel & blurryface no doubt, but it also just shows how much they have matured as artists & i think that is something that easily makes this one of their best. it shows that they are not afraid to step out of their comfort zones & do something new. the level of time & detail put into this album can be heard with just one song, & that just shows how important this is to them. so the fans that were brought in by blurryface will probably always like blurryface the best, just because it is their dullest album to date. (not to say that blurryface is awful or anything, like its fine, definitely a solid 6 or 7, trench just seems better imo).
This was a great review Mark, I appreciate the time you put into it to consider the whole concept and extrapolate the best you could from it :)
Guys it’s a 1. Just telling you so you don’t have to watch/10
fanny tooth nana it’s a 0, I can’t believe he disliked it more than AJR

Loved this album, definitely get your points.
Favorites: Morph, neon gravestones, jumpsuit, levitate
Least: Banditos
Good luck with..................... Them
Love your review! I feel like a lot of this comes down to personal taste. Personally, I prefer stranger songs, and compositionally unexpected songs such as unresolved chords & melodies and build ups that leave you hanging because it’s interesting to listen to in my personal opinion. I’ve also always been a fan of more laid back music and though I loved the grimy bass lines on blurryface and the darker aspects of it, i like the juxtaposition of dark themes with lighter musical composition which is the aspect of vessel that pulled me into liking the group. I get where your coming from though and I appreciate your honest review!!
I very much enjoyed this album (especially in the genre blending and production aspect) despite not being a twenty one pilots stan at all...and the themes and lyrical details you mentioned in your review actually made me appreciate it more! From the critique of the glorification of suicide and even their own fan base, I think that’s a pretty bold move for them to address these tough topics and still deliver it in an effective way that doesn’t seem (to me anyways) all too condescending.
On a different note, I’m curious if you know or at least have a theory of why many major review publications (like Pitchfork and Exclaim!) hardly ever cover twenty one pilots or other alternative-leaning artists (kinda like Kongos)? I appreciate artists like them that blend different genres in a super effective way but it seems the critical press aren’t all that keen on these kinds of acts...
Personally I think this is their best album. Solid 9/10 for me
you're rong jish

@@Jacox98 it's okay to be wrong

Finally someone else who thinks NATN is the weakest song!
13:24 “it just really didn’t clique for me.” Oh, Mark. You knucklehead. 😂😂😂
I gave it an 8/10, but I definitely agree with the points made here. Especially about the execution of the theme, which is what stops me from giving it a higher rating
im a diehard fan and ive gotta say this is the most thoughtful review ive seen yet. thank you for giving them the respect of bringing your brain to the table here bc it damn sure seems like no one else is even capable.
Love pop, love alternative, love good production, hate twenty-one pilots. Idk why, I'd really like to like them, but I find the hooks too weak to love, vocals too unimpressive, production too obscure. Not saying they're bad writers, vocalists or producers- just saying FOR ME, there's nothing that stands out enough. That's my problem with them. Although I will say that usually after signing with FBR bands only write radio pop, and at least pilots didn't change their sound completely
I Respect your opinion, but NATN as the worst song????? Nah.
Imo it's been less than a week and I can say once this grows on everyone it will be the best tøp album.
First!
Edit: I thought this album is gonna be a 10, but a 7! Wtf. At least he still like it
Just couldn't get into this album due to the lack of energy and punchiness. Jumpsuit was pretty good, Levitate's production held back potential energy, Nico and the Niners grew on me but the rest left very little impact. Bought Vessel and Blurryface but skipped this one.
I respect your opinion and love watching your content, Mark, but I'm sorry I just had to punch myself the moment you said Trench wasn't on the level of Vessel or Blurryface.
>implying blurryface & vessel are good
>implying trench isnt the only good top project
dude i like twenty one pilots but i don’t like heathens or the cancer cover either
I appreciate the research, but damn I really don’t agree. This album was a huge step for them. I can listen to it over and over again. It’s not cliche like blurry face and the production is so crisp and clear it blows my mind every time. Best lyricism yet. I just don’t see how it can be called mediocre. Good review though.
I hope the fanbase doesn't kill you for this like they did with your 8/10 for Vessel and 9/10 for Blurryface.
Self Titled - 8/10
Regional At Best - 5/10
Vessel - 9/10
Blurryface - 7.5/10
Trench - 8.5/10
I understand your points but it really didn't deserve a 3/10
It's a 7 not a 3
Insert Fantano Joke
r/whoooooosh
He messed up what the metaphors and colors too.....
"cleek"
I understand opinions are opinions but is this album really worse than AJR’s The Click? You didn’t have to go off on this album THAT hard
Love the vid, but you got the colours mixed up. Just check the music vid for Jumpsuit, the rider is covered in red and tries to take Joseph back to Dema, whereas the Banditos have yellow stripes and throw yellow petals to help Joseph
I fucking loved Trench, easily better then Blurryface. Pet Cheetah and Neon Gravestones :DDD
Pretty much entirely agree with this
I am praying that you can still move your right arm after this review. The clique will attack you now even though it was, for the most part, positive.
Considering your Profile Pic,they already have done damage to you

Warning calls? I thought this was a twenty-one pilots review, not CHVRCHES.
teehee
Anthony Fantana loves this album too he gave it 8/10
After hearing Jumpsuit, I suddenly got interested in this band but then hearing most of the album isn't as rocky as that I will pass. Thanks for the review!
slight correction -- the light of dema is blue.
It annoyed me how he got some of the lore wrong, but whatever. You can have your opinion, but I really like this album
I think this is their best album by far but I had a feeling it wouldn't be up your alley as much. It's definitely an unexpected turn for them
WTF can't we just enjoy music and not make it the Da Vinci Code?
The way you say clique is pestering me to the nine levels of hell but I agree with you.
Trench is the best top album easily.
Thought I would point this out but that's the wrong cover art. That's the cover art when Jumpsuit / NATN came out.
"possibly bc some of the fans didn't learn the message" -- right??
I think it's great 9/10
Red light... You mean the color scheme of Blurryface?
As an outsider, I have no clue what any of this means.
Yeah that’s great and all but AJR just dropped their deluxe edition of The Click. I really want a review of that, considering how well it went last time.
I just now realized that “The Click” was meant to attract twenty one pilots fans, also known as “The Clique.” Warner Bros you shameless fucks 😂😂😂
He doesn't review deluxe editions. Also if you watched the Click review, how did you _just_ figure it out?
Zach Riggs I know the first part, ‘twas a joke. As for the second, it was just something that went over my head
@@mikerivera373 Understandable.
Hi Mark, do you think you will be able to get to the new Coheed album? Would love to see a review
Great video
BUT WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT LEVITATE?
I do agree that this is not as good as Blurryface but I think it’s a great album, for me it’s definitely a solid 8.
And of course my favorite song on the album is your least favorite.
Man Friday was great music

Can you a Throwback Billboard Breakdown Series
Yes I agree with this review
...This was a concept album? Woof, flew over my head.
Having been introduced to them through their radio singles (which I didn't like very much), Twenty-one Pilots and I didn't really start on the right foot, and I've always considered their success as part of the unfortunate reason that more artists in the mainstream shifted toward dour, washed out music alongside Drake. But morbid curiosity did get the best of me, so I ended up giving it a shot and...
...I dunno, maybe my that bias against them was that powerful, because even recognizing the talent in songwriting and production, this dreary aesthetic really did a number on me. Every appearance of a ukelele made me instinctively want to roll my eyes, although I guess they can sound good once I got past that. What struck me on my second listen, though, was that Tyler Joseph and Twenty-one Pilots generally, I guess, really gave me astrong whiff of XXXTentacion in their sound. Maybe X was cribbing a bit from them, I dunno, but in Tyler's singing, the fact that he's got that fast flow and a knack for screaming... I'm not crazy, right? The similarities are there. And I didn't care for X's music, so the similarity between the two also ended up souring me on the album a little.
There were cuts I enjoyed, but it never really stuck out in my mind for too long.
did you just compare twenty one pilots to an abuser
