I’m on Day 3 of recovery. I’m already completely off pain medicine. Don’t be scared, friends. I’m 43, in good health but nothing special. I had a right side inguinal hernia mesh repair - and during my examination my surgeon detected a weakness on the left too, so he meshed that preemptively. All done in one operation, laparoscopically. My right hernia was slightly higher up compared to the average inguinal, I’m told, but I can’t say whether that really effected my comfort after the operation. Day 1 is rough - but not unbearable. No need to be worried. I didn’t even need the opioid painkillers. I stuck to a Tylenol + Aleve combo. Icing is a must. I did 20-30mins on/off for the first 2 days. Helped a lot. Remember to ice your balls too - they swell. I iced in bed right before sleeping, but didn’t do it again until the morning. I had help, but I kept ice packs in a small cooler by the couch, and in another small cooler by the bed for convenience anyway. Also, get up and walk around the room for a few of the 20mins phases when you’re not icing yourself - walking sooner rather than later has speeded up my recovery significantly. Seriously, do it Day 1. Diet is super important: you really, really don’t want to get constipated from the painkillers. So for 2 days BEFORE the operation, I ate vegan/vegetarian meals with high fiber. The afternoon/evening after my surgery, I only drank plain chicken broth (just liquid) with a little fiber powder in it, with salt and herbs, and a handful of saltine crackers. Felt SO GOOD after the pre-surgery fasting. Also has a nice dose of protein in it, which helps. Day 2, I upgraded to lentil soup with crackers and some peanut butter on wholewheat toast. Felt AMAZING. I read someone’s advice not to over-hydrate immediately after surgery until you’ve peed. Apparently there’s a risk of the bladder not waking up immediately after surgery, so by drinking too much too fast, they needed to go to the ER to get a catheter. So I did drink some water in the recovery room, but was cautious at home until I peed the first time. I started taking stool softeners the evening of the operation, and took them again in the morning and evening of Day 2. I also drank a cup of Smooth Move tea each day. Day 1, I lay down propped up when I wasn’t up and walking. Day 2, I made myself to sit in a regular chair to get myself ready to sit on the toilet. I had my first bowel movement in the evening of on Day 2, without giving myself an enema, thankfully. However, I had some home ones on hand just in case. Likewise, I had Milk of Magnesia on standby, but so far haven’t needed it. In short: hydration + lentil soup + stool softeners is a winner. I’m on Day 3 now. Trying not to get cocky, but I managed to shower fairly comfortably this morning and I’m off pain meds completely. A couple of other handy bits: I was very lucky: my surgeon gave me ‘mobile blood clot prevention’ things that are basically compression socks that have a little motor that squeezes your calf every minute or so. I wore them while I was sleeping and I think they’ve been a good addition. But even if you don’t get those, regular compression socks will also do the trick, no doubt. Also, after my intubation my throat was quite sore and I often had to cough, which is very painful. A throat numbing spray was a great help. If you have people taking care of you, make sure they take Covid tests and don’t have a regular cough/cold - you definitely don’t want to be coughing or sneezing during your recovery. And that’s everything so far! I was so grateful for the accounts and advice I found in places like this, so this is me thanking all you strangers and paying it forward. Truly, don’t be scared - it’s been nowhere near as bad as I feared - you can do it, friends! Power up!!
@@nigerianscholiosis810 I suppose that depends on the nature of your work - but I think I was at my desk after about 10 days. I probably could’ve been there sooner, but I had the luxury of not *having* to. For physical labour, it’s best to feel that out yourself.
@@robyescombe yeah i got mine done 2 days ago and would definitely be able to work at a desk by now i can stand up sit down and everything but i do semi hard labor outdoors. Ill just have to wait and see how my body reacts
I remember watching this vid before my surgery this February. I was so worried and I just went in and got it done. Its no joke the day of but noticeably improves
Appreciate the hernia vids. I'm 2 days post-op and was dreading this non-lifting period. Just gonna do a million reps of grip strength exercises for 4 weeks.
@Nigerian Scholiosis I am on the day after surgery today. Pretty damn sore, but nothing I can't tolerate. Doc says all went well & should feel better in a week, can swim and return to most activities in 2 weeks, but he wants me to wait 6 weeks to return to work since I work as an industrial pipefitter with lots of climbing, body harnesses, lifting, pushing pulling, etc...
Hey guys, im now 3 months post surgery. First month i did 0 activity, second month i started shadow boxing and push ups while wearing compression belt. 1.5 months in, i added lifting light weights (isolation movements, no compound movements) also added cycling, 25-30km/h and added planks too. I progressively increased my planks and now i can do 5 min. I stopped wearing the belt by end of second month and never weared it during planks. I started doing weighted sit ups by this time as well 2-5kg max. By end of 3rd month, i added swimming. It has been a week now and i feel great. Will get back to boxing training next week so that’s exciting. I used to wrestle before the surgery but i will give myself one more month until get back to that. Will keep u posted.
i feel good for you how are you now? do you still box do you have disomfort or pain and how old are you plesse answer and did you start doing wrestling so you had an inguinal hernia right❤❤???
I just had my laparoscopic mesh hernia repair 3 DAYS AGO. This is a fantastic video. The first two days was the worst but for sure the 2nd day was worst than the first. Somethings that i don’t think people talk about is at least for me how DIFFICULT IT WAS TO SLEEP. My Oura ring and garmin clocked me at less than 2 hours of sleep for those 2 days. So a combination of the discomfort with poor sleep is what made it really unbearable. Now on day 3 I slept so good. And I am able to shower. I’ll follow up on here if anyone has any questions. But at 7 days I want to try and get 8-10k steps and my doctor says by week 3 I should be able to start jogging/ running Week 6 to start lifting
I’m having surgery on October 15. I have to admit I’m quite nervous. I’m an active weight lifter 4x a week and I’ve made good consistent gains recently despite living with the hernia.
@@vijayriar3850 hope everything goes well. For me I’m on day 12 and I honestly feel 💯 I am going to start jogging on week 3 and week 4 go back to the gym to do dumbbell work with 50% of my usual.
That is fantastic. Sounds like you’re making great progress and that’s very encouraging. I can’t imagine a life without heavy lifting, I absolutely love it. Thanks for your optimistic reply.
@@vijayriar3850 I would recommend 3 things that aren’t shared much 1st: 3 days before and 3 days after the surgery eat fibrous foods. I see a lot of people talking about issues using the restroom. I prepped in advance with lots of fiborous meals Cooked and bowl movement was like normal 2nd: wear very loose boxers the days of your surgery. You’d don’t want to wear something tight leaving the hospital or the first few days 3rd) I’m all about look good feel good. So before surgery I got a haircut. Cut my toe nails. Mainly things I knew I wouldn’t be able to do that week. Not leaving the house or having the range of motion as normal.
Another piece of advice my physical therapist told about this repair was that scar tissue is not like normal tissue. It can tear but be mindful of how we move and how we control abdominal pressure
I just went through a bi lateral Inguinal laparoscopic surgery. I’m on day 1 and omg ! I need two people in order to go to the bathroom. Hoping day 2 is better ! Great content !!!
@@MannyQuaciouahow is it now after months? I got mine fixed a month and a half ago, still hurts a bit mostly scrotum , I have seroma too, only thing I can do atm is walk.
Glad to see you are so able to listen to your body! You have a great voice, which shows great abdominal control also. Congratulations on your recovery!
23 years old, high level taekwondo athlete here…I just had open bilateral inguinal hernia surgery in fort Myers Florida by Dr Tomas doing the desarda no mesh repair….didn’t want mesh, heard lots of bad things about it… plus don’t like the idea of foreign. Objects…..I Had two indirect hernias and 1 direct. I’m 2.5 weeks post surgery. Doing a little better everyday. I just hope and pray my sports career isn’t over and I can make a full recovery…. Sucks that this happened to me so young… just want to be able to return to sports and intense exercise/ soccer.
Thanks for posting this! I just had the same surgery 4 weeks ago and just starting to move around! Next week I plan on starting on the elliptical and slowly easing back into fitness, my doc told me not to lift anything over 25 pounds for 6 weeks so just using 8 pound weights for curls for now and figure ease back into that as well! Still very soar and get sharp pains but slowly easing back into things! Great post and gives hope!
Had a laparoscopic/robotic inguinal hernia repair (with mesh) 4 days ago and starting my post-hernia exercise regime. It was not as bad as I had anticipated, and fortunately I only needed one dose of the oxycodone then switched over to 2 tabs of 325 Tylenol every 6 hours and stopped all meds early on the second day post surgery. I was advised I can begin running again two weeks from the date of surgery which I am looking forward to.
@@49giantwarriors83 Best of luck! I started walking as soon as I got home and for the next 13 days I mostly walked and I tend to push it so I was going over 15000 steps per day after the 3rd day and I was told I could workout with 10lb weights but I added 15s as well. My doctor told me I could start jogging at the two week mark which I did and have since ramped up to my prior speed and actually increased the speed and distance from 2 miles to 3 miles. At around the 3rd week I started using 20lb weights and by the 5th week moved up to 25lbs and things have gone extremely well. Actually I was back into my split routine two weeks after surgery, and gradually increased the intensity to now I am doing intense nonstop 3 hour workouts. I was told to wait on the sit-ups/pushups or squats until the 6th week but I started doing crunches on the floor and full push-ups at about the 4th week. My doctor also advised me to wait before I did squats until the 6th week which I have followed because that can cause a significant amount of intra-abdominal pressure. It's been 6 weeks since my surgery and I am back up to speed Plus I am working out a little more than prior to the surgery............ I have no pain or symptoms of any sort and I especially like not having to push my intestines back in as I did prior to surgery during my exercising. BTW, listen to your doctor and your body but I am a tad hard headed and pushed it a little more then maybe I should have. I guess I should have been more reasonable with my recovery given I too am a doctor but heck I wanted to get back to normal on my schedule. 😉 Again best of luck.......
@@albertbrooklyn that’s very encouraging to hear! I am on day 3 post hernia repair and I feel pretty good. I am able to walk with ease and today is the 1st day where my soreness is minimal. I will probably wait a couple days until I start going on walks but I really can’t wait to throw some 5-10lb dumbbell shoulder flys in there hopefully after the 1 week mark. I hear some people have lingering nerve pain months down the road hopefully with being active early on will help counteract that possibility. Best of luck to you as well and stay healthy.
Thank you Josh for uploading this video! I had the same surgery 2 months ago. I'm an International Powerlifter 60 years old now. I have already left participation in Championships when I moved to Canada in 2011 but I was just doing a fitness workout at home. I was surfing such kind of advice and personal video from someone. Finally I got it ! Your video is very helpful for me and cleared my so many doubts. I also went through so many injuries during my lifting career. Thanks 🙏👍
Hey Man just want it to say thank you so much for sharing it I just recovered from a ground hernia surgery been working out 3 years haven't took a week off now I can't wait to go back and hit the gym. But of course I was worried and now I am not after what you have shared.
great video. I'm on day 20 post open inguinal hernia surgery. Been doing 4km - 8km walks daily outside for a week now, definitely finding it helps speed up recovery. Still can't run yet but feeling stronger/more mobile each day. Doing some light core exercises, slightly sore/uncomfortable when doing them but again each day it gets slightly easier.
@@johnasmitra6402 yea going good so far. Started playing 5 a side football again recently. Have some spasms sometimes or like throbbing feeling for couple seconds every other day but doctor said that’s going to happen for next 6-12 months
Ryan did you have it for awhile before you got the surgery? I got an inguinal when I was running 6 months ago and went to the doctor have to have surgery but he said I could run my marathon I had scheduled. I never went in for the surgery, still weight lift and run. I am going to have the surgery I’m the next few weeks but might still train in the meantime. Was just curious if you had it for awhile, or got it repaired immediately. I’m still on the fence about the surgery but know it’s inevitable.

Your recovery was vastly faster than mine, it probably has to due with how healthy you were around the time of the surgery. I'm obese at 300lbs and 38% bodyfat and diabetic. I got mine while putting up plywood ceiling panels and they said it was pretty bad. I nearly lost my left testicle due to it occassionally cutting off circulation. First week post open inguinal hernia surgery, i could barely walk to the restroom until they took the staples out. 4 weeks i felt roughly okay, and could do normal things, I think i was allowed to lift 15-25 lbs at that point. During this time I had a lot of nerve pain and burning anytime the mesh moved this stopped about 8 weeks. 8 weeks out i went to my regular doctor who said to follow a 25lbs every 6 weeks rule in the gym. I decided to follow that but up it another 25 for the first 6 weeks, so at week 12 i could have been at 75lbs but i decided to do 100lbs instead doing amraps and ended up hurting myself pretty bad which took me out of the gym for a month. I backed down to the doctor's recommendation and did okay. at 4 months post up I would occassionally tighten my abs or groin while sitting or doing normal activities which would annoy my incision area, but it felt rathe good even though i was hurting it. at 5 months post up I had to tighten my abs upward to annoy my incision area. 6 months out, I have to do something significant to bother my incision area under the power of my own body. I've started doing Wendler 5/3/1 with the doctor's recommended weight except doubled for lower body max. I did squats today and my first amrap set, i could feel slight pain from my incision area at 200lbs (doc's recommendation is 125lbs at the moment). Feb 12th is when i'm supposedly allowed to bench 300lbs again and maybe be normal if say my lower body can lift 1.5x times that.
I had my umbilical hernia surgery on the 12/20/22 . hurts like hell, then I came to realize that all that heavy lifting in the end got me nowhere, except in the surgery room, paying thousands of dollars to get patched up so that I can go back to work. Personally, I learned my lesson, and I now know the limits of my body, and I won't be trying to reach that pinnacle again.
Cheers Josh had my surgery a week ago , 62 years old with 2 hip replaced and now hernia op . But totally agree with you, you have to get back to it since hips Ive Sky Dived and walked the Great Wall of China ……now to get back to it after Hernia best Nigel
I’m 51 had 2 ingurnial hernias meshed left and right sides and 7 weeks ago I had my 3rd hernia umbilical hernia meshed…. Back the gym on Wednesday with a little help 😉 light weight shed loadsa reps 👍
I needed that they call me the deadlift king i had 210 kg lift at 67 kgs, when i visited the doctor he told that i could never lift anything more than 100 kgs in whatever exercise that may be, i immiedetely went to visit another doctor and he told me that after 6 months i will be 100 percent and he gave me those 6 months just to ensure himself, he also told me that every person heals different and what someone considers heavy may not be heavy to you he told me i have never picked a weight how could i determine whats heavy or not
Great inspiring vid! I also have an inguinal hernia and am from Canada. I'm trying to decide on my options. Did you opt for a mesh? It's a great ongoing controversy, mesh or no mesh? Was your operation robotic? If your from Montreal, what hospital did you go to? Thx and good luck!
I'm on my 7th day of recovery, honestly it wasn't a bad recovery at all, I got the laposcopic method. The first 1-2 days were kind of bad but by the 2nd and 3rd day I was up walking around. My doctor said don't lift anything over 10 lbs for 6 weeks so thats what I'm gonna stick to, I'll probably take it slow getting back into it.
Hey I’m at 6 weeks now post robotic larcoscopic inguineal surgery. I was working out for years before I got my hernia. I’m thinking about going back to the gym this weak. Is there any movements I should avoid and is there a weight I should avoid at this point? Also did you still have some pain at 6 weeks or like irritation sometimes?
Been back the gym for 8 weeks after open hernia surgery just been using upper body machines not lifting anything heavy off the floor no deadlifts or rows yet , a seated chest supported row machine is a great alternative, you can still have great workouts but be carefull to make sure you use strict motion tut, I will start hitting legs again soon but at first I will only do leg press , hack squats , thigh and leg extensions. the key is to be sensible and patient
I had robotic surgery and it’s far from minor surgery. Days 1 & 2 went pretty well 3 4 & 5? Just brutal, barely able to stand straight. Got stuck in bed because the pain was so bad trying to sit up that I couldn’t get out. Thank God my wife was home to help me sit up. So lying flat on my back was out of the question for about 9 days. Then the testicles (oh my gosh) didn’t know that could happen but they swell up and feel like when you’re kicked in the nuts but that feeling stays with you 24 hours a day. I’m at two weeks post surgery and the biggest issue is probably the bloating belly. For robotic they pump you up with air for easier access and you will feel like a fat pig for several weeks after surgery. Three bore holes through your stomach and reaching down with tools through the abdomen to the inguinal site? Not fun and not minor. Mind you my pain tolerance is very high in high school my foot was severed and I remained conscious through it all so I do know about pain. Just my two cents like you said it’s different for everyone and I’m 66 yrs old so that could be some of it. I hope to God I never get another one because I may just live with it. That’s probably my biggest concern…going back to lifting and blowing out the other side. I’m pretty confident the mesh repair I had will be good to go…thanks
@@bryce4818 no it does not. You are bloated several days after. Then your nuts possibly get tender and swollen 🤢. But no my stomach returned to its normal condition.
@@HeCoversMe just got my surgery via robot the bloating is the worst part because it causes the majority of the pain luckily my scrotum is not filled with air though.
@@bryce4818 good for you bro it only gets better I felt great a couple days then it got worse when my lower region kicked in (that didn’t happen immediately) then after about 10 days it slowly felt better. I truly understand the five pound limit. Any way I wish you the best, if you’re like me then you’re glad it’s over!😄. It’s been a year now sometimes I get a light pinching where the mesh is but who knows maybe it’s psychosomatic 🤔. It’s not enough to alter life so no big deal. I’m back to lifting and feeling grateful! Once again get well soon sending up prayers and thanks🙏🏻
Thats exactly how my appendix surgery was. they sold me on its so easy and minor. def was not. now I have to do this surgery a few months later. fuck this year lol
I wouldn’t even think about lifting until after a couple months and start off light. Who would want to go through this surgery again. No thanks. What’s the rush?
This is super informative and reassuring. I am 4 months post open mesh repair. Got back into spinning classes but still holding back. Avid life-long hockey player, nervous about getting on the ice. Surgeon gave green-light but was like.."I think it's fine but who knows." (which didn't ease my anxiety). You mentioned you avoid the twisting abdominal exercises...immediately made me think about slap shots, skating, etc (which gave me more hesitation). Any chance you play hockey?!? Would love some input!
Idk about the comment below 👇 about walking home after surgery that sounds nuts to me lol I just had my surgery on the 21st even after a few weeks I occasionally get a very light nerve pain on my hip also small muscle spasms close to the incision not sure if it’s cuz of the fat i’ve developed in my midsection it gets kind of annoying during allergy season because sneezing or coughing irritates my incision I can tell my muscle tissue isn’t completely healed which leads me to believe that lifting is still out of the question here’s to a quick recovery and good luck to the rest of you🙏🏽
Hey Josh, was surprised to find you made a video on post hernia surgery. I’ve got an open abdominal hernia surgery right after may2-4 weekend and a bit anxious about missing a big chunk of training as I recover. Thanks for the advice here! Hope all is well with you and the family. Miss playing hockey with you guys!
My recommendation post surgery would be to take hot yoga classes. The heat loosens up the tension in the abdominal muscles and allows the blood to circulate better
Hi guys I've been operated twice because of inguinal hernia, but when I was 1 year old and the second one 3 years old, now I'm 23 and I still have this apprehension about training and exercises like squat even though I love it, I can't talk to my surgeon because we lost touch (20 years anyway 😂) what do you advise, do I need to muscle this part, or do you think since time it's healed and hard enough
How was your hernia repaired? With mesh? If the surgery was successful I would consider you limitation-free. If I were you I would find a new general surgeon and have him examine me.
One side inguinal hernia operated guy here. Leaving the hospital I walked back home, no big deal. After a week I started moving carefully and 1 month after the surgery I started training and lifting again but very carefully and with lighter weights. Four months after the surgery gave it a try lifting as I was before just for one day and waited. At the the third day a lump appeared. So... waiting to see my doctor again. Be carefull.
@Alex Sawyer Hello Alex. I had the doctor appointment two days ago and he said that it was not to worry about. That it was the spermatic cord what I was feeling. I mentioned him that I completelly stoped working out theese past weeks, that three days after that day I sensed some painless, short and sudden movements in the area so he examined and explained me that the mesh was attached with some stitches inside, that three weeks after the surgery the tissue starts to cover and blend absorving some percentage of the mesh and that I could go ahead and keep training in the carefull and observing way Im doning it. So I will. At first he mentioned that we might do some abdominal ultrasound studies but first I had to go and see him. At the day of the appointment and after examination he discarded that right away. So I will go ahead but with the weight that allowed me work out with no problems. Hey, hope this is usefull to you and if you don't mind tell me about your experience and your approach.
@@javieraduriz7825good to hear man you had a good report. yea im on week 8 still doing super light. Think in going to wait another month before ab work and heavier lifts. Hope all remains well
Hello lads, wondering how you are going a year later? I had inguinal hernia surgery 3 weeks ago, and am planning to start working (physical job) next week. Slightly nervous
Day 6 after a large Inguinal Hernia open surgery, I went for a short 20 min flat walk 4 days after the op and I felt ok, slightly sore at the end but generally ok . But the thing that stops me walking far is that my knees are now bone on bone. So I'm thinking, just thinking, of returning to the gym and using one of the recumbent bikes and elliptical trainers, very lightly (10mins each ) might be the way to keep the circulation going. Fact is since you really don't what effect anything you do will have, walking or cycling, you are afraid to even move, you do something and then you think should I have done that, wonder if that was a mistake.
Hello! My name is Eric and first I want to thank you for this video it helped me a little and I was wondering if here is any way to get in contact with you. I have an inguinal hernia as well, scheduled to have surgery in a few weeks, and would like to speak to you more of your process and what you went through/do's and don't of lifting after . I am really nervous and worried and I feel a little lost. Anything helps. Thank you again for making this video.
Currently on day 5 of recovery from a laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. I can get up and move around pretty freely for the most part. Does anyone else have a seroma as a side effect? My surgeon said it’s normal but it’s very unsightly…
@@moogoesacow1 I am feeling perfect. It is one month and some change now. Going by my experience I have 2 warnings. If you stay at the hotel sleep on the couch not the bed. Hurts less to get up and down. They tell you to get special athletic underwear. Make sure you get the right ones. Your sack will swell up pretty big and get heavy. The pain I had after wasn't bad at all. Just getting out of bed hurt. My hernia was 20 years old and bad.
@@BryceGarling thanks for the advice! I’m only 22 years old so I’m hoping my age will help me heal quicker so I can get back to being a normal guy in his early 20s lol. I’ll be staying in the hotel for two nights since I live on the other side of Florida so I’ll remember to sleep on the couch. My hernia is on the larger side but surprisingly only hurts when walking long distances. I just don’t want it to get worse which is why I’m having the surgery.
@@BryceGarling sorry about bothering you with questions but the anxiety I have about this procedure is insane lmao. Were you walking the same day? How long would you say it was until you were able to do light activities on your own (cooking, cleaning, short walks, driving, etc.)? When did you feel comfortable bending, lifting, sleeping, etc.? Has the scar mostly healed? If you don’t want to share details like this I understand.
I just had my second hernia surgery a week ago i had 3 hernias before i lifted weights found out when i was 15 i left the right inguinal one alone for 10 years but finally got it fixed and my umbilical was reccurent so i had to get that done again but this time got it with mesh to assure it doesn’t come back this time ! I feel so much better a week out
I had inguinal hernia surgery with the mesh. I noticed once I started lifting again I'd get some muscle soreness in the lower ab region where the mesh was placed. So I just made sure not to overdo it and give the area adequate time to rest before I'd lift again. I guess that soreness is normal. The muscle there also feels tight. I'll just have to restrengthen and stretch it slowly with time.
I had a lakroscopic heria repair 4 weeks ago. Pain was ok. Could walk normal pretty fast. After 2,5 weeks I started working out super light. After 3 weeks now I got the corona virus... But all in all the recovery seems to go very well for me. But now there're two questions for me: 1. Is ist normal that the area of the repaired hernia is much flatter/smaller? It looks like I have a little hole compared to the other side. I cannot feel the inguinal canal anymore... 2. Before I got my surgery, I lifted weights. Around 120-140kg squats. Know I'm asking myself how I should handle the adomnial pressure. Cause now have a super strong side with a mesh and a normal side. I think all the pressure will last on the other side because the mesh doesn't strech. My non-surgery side is able to strech a bit. So to sum it up, the risk is now much higher to get a hernia on the other side, right? Or am I thinking a false way? Sorry for my bad english... :(
I had mine on my left side. I just did the laparoscopic and the doc said I had a very small one on the right and he went ahead with the bi lateral mesh. I’m on day 1 and I barely made it to the bathroom
For me it was only the left side. I had a repair as a child on the right side (without mesh)... Standing up from bed was painful. But I could roll up over the right side. So with both sides it must be very uncomfortabel. For me the first and second day was mad. But then it got better ervey day. Didn't need painkillers after 5 days.
I have to have a small inguinal repair. I do not want mesh but it seems to be the standard. For anyone who has had it done, can you feel the mesh? Any pain or complications? I'm in decent shape physically and like to workout and lift, so I don't want to create complications. The mesh thing is a concern for me.... thoughts?
I had a inguinal on my right side and got the mesh yes it obviously hurts for like a week when u move and i cant feel the mesh inside my body but where i had my hernia feels numb to the touch even after 2 months but i work semi labor and dont feel no pain…. Just listen to your body. Have u got it done?
Sneezed hard in my sleep, felt a knife. Normally, I always brace my core, but I was sleeping. Bilateral hernia it is! My six packs and strong core did not save me :-(
You mentioned a couple of exercises that you avoid now post surgery because you were concerned they put too much strain on the area. What about Turkish getups with kettlebells? Are those dangerous as well?
I'm gonna need a specialist, not just a general surgeon. I have not only bilateral inguinal hernia, but an umbilical hernia AND diastasis recti. Found specialist surgeon. Does laparoscopic with mesh with DR repair. The price we pay for years of lifting, huh?
Hellow yes I did baby my heriia repair for one year but did some work but now I want to build my Uper legs I have an inguinal hernia and a bodybuilder and I'm still have pain after one year how can I build my legs again I have no problem or pain with my upper body can some help me on this
Bro, my life really sucks, before surgery i was diagnosed by right side inguinal hernia and i saw many bodybuilders who are lifting perfectly fine after the surgery, i was highly motivated and went for a surgery and unluckily dr found that my left side is also weak but it’s not swelling so not going for a surgery, they said you don’t have to lift weight for life in order to cure yourself for second surgery Hahhaa oh god how can i survive without gym for life Now my parents advise and dr advise don’t do gym for life because you will develop the left one and if you went for second surgery in 25 then how will you manage in you 50s I have met hundred of peeps saying bro you will have issue while intercourse Don’t know what’s going on!!
I see that most of you (if not all) had a labaroscopic surgery. Unfortunately, mine will be a open surgery (take it or leave it). What can I expect in terms of pain and recovery?
Idk I’m not trying to be funny but does affect your private area I heard it shrinks I’m not sure that’s true. But I am wondering because I need a surgery as well in my groin.
So it sounds like he specifically avoided the Shouldice Hospital because someone in his family had a bad experience with it? He considered no-mesh surgery and chose against it.
I avoided Shouldice because of a my fathers bad experience yes. Saying so, I have heard other people have great experiences there. As for the no-mesh, my surgeon advised against laprospic unless it was a second surgery. This was just my experience and I would definitely consult multiple doctors and surgeons and see what is best for you.
Probably stupid question. I noticed you're wearing a weight belt in your videos when lifting. Obviously cuz your lifting heavy but is it also to prevent another hernia? You know does it become sort of a mindset like "this will help prevent another one."
Post 3 weeks after two inguinal hernia surgery’s and went to the gym today and did some light machine training on legs and back. Second week I mostly did the same and did light chest and shoulder workouts. Im curious if anyone else felt very sore in the abs after 3 weeks post surgery.
@@rajav4144 ..Hey Raja…yes all is great. I was back to training 5 weeks to the date of the surgery. I spent 2 weeks at about 50 percent and progressed steadily from there. A month after surgery I was back to the old regimen. I must admit that occasionally I encounter a slight twinge at the surgery sight but I hear that’s normal. I hope you are doing well.
Hey brother, me too! Right side laparoscopic inguinal procedure and I’m on day 2 of recovery. How’s your recover coming along? I’m able to walk around and move a little more freely now.
@@Jumpfartake11sjk so you did yours on the 28th? I did mine on the 29th of September. How are you doing? What side did u do? I walked 15000 steps yesterday and kicked some football. First few days after surgery wasn't fun but already taking care of toddlers after 5 days was soooo relieving
Had surgery for one side about 9 months ago. 6 months ago I started doing a bro split but avoided my legs for fear, babying my core as you say. My surgeon said the other side wasn’t damaged but to be cautious, so as I consider starting very light squats finally, the small detail that you only had one side repaired makes me feel a little less anxious.
I had bi lateral laparoscopic surgery in March 2022. One side it didn't work unfortunately. I had to have one side redone Dec 2022 with open surgery. I just got released this week. February 2023 to start lifting slowly. Fingers crossed.
@rh1107 I feel great. It feels awkward sometimes like a ghost pain. It's not painful by anymeans just feels weird. Haven't had any problems after second surgery
A couple of other handy bits:
I was very lucky: my surgeon gave me ‘mobile blood clot prevention’ things that are basically compression socks that have a little motor that squeezes your calf every minute or so.

Yoo how u doing now? I just got mine 2 days ago and wanted to know about lifting heavy stuff since i work labor
@JafarMohsen, good you are doing well, could you please let me know what kind of surgery you had, laparoscopic or open ? Thanks
How’s it going now? I am 9 days post op

But at 7 days I want to try and get 8-10k steps and my doctor says by week 3 I should be able to start jogging/ running
Week 6 to start lifting
I’m having surgery on October 15. I have to admit I’m quite nervous. I’m an active weight lifter 4x a week and I’ve made good consistent gains recently despite living with the hernia.

That is fantastic.
Sounds like you’re making great progress and that’s very encouraging.
I can’t imagine a life without heavy lifting, I absolutely love it.
Thanks for your optimistic reply.
@@vijayriar3850 I would recommend 3 things that aren’t shared much
1st: 3 days before and 3 days after the surgery eat fibrous foods. I see a lot of people talking about issues using the restroom. I prepped in advance with lots of fiborous meals Cooked and bowl movement was like normal
2nd: wear very loose boxers the days of your surgery.
You’d don’t want to wear something tight leaving the hospital or the first few days
3rd) I’m all about look good feel good.
How does one do that. A six pack and always bracing my core did not stop me from getting bilateral inguinal hernia.
@@zk4929 you can have a genetic weakness for it, even if you never lifted weights in your life you would still get it

I’m getting robotic laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery as well tomorrow. How has your recovery been?

How is your progress now? How are you feeling?
I had my umbilical hernia surgery on the 12/20/22 . hurts like hell, then I came to realize that all that heavy lifting in the end got me nowhere, except in the surgery room, paying thousands of dollars to get patched up so that I can go back to work. Personally, I learned my lesson, and I now know the limits of my body, and I won't be trying to reach that pinnacle again.

Hi I'm freak out after surgery did you return to old life.
The worst thing for me was that gas they inject in the belly to give them space to work. That stuff was in me causing pain for over a week.
Great video bro

What was the outcome what did the doctor say? How are you doing now?
🙈😆💯🤘🏆Glad to hear about all your success with this recovery.
When did you start the workout after your surgery?
Good looking out bro
Thank you again for making this video.
its a simple, fast n easy surgery eric , dont worry go n get it done my friend
Currently on day 5 of recovery from a laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. I can get up and move around pretty freely for the most part. Does anyone else have a seroma as a side effect? My surgeon said it’s normal but it’s very unsightly…
More common with laparoscopic
Laying in the hotel in fort myers Florida after the hurricane. Just got the desarda no mesh.
I’m doing the same thing at the same place in a couple weeks. How you feeling now?
@@moogoesacow1 You won't regret it.
I feel so much better a week out
how do you feel now and do you started lifting or running and where are you from?
When did you start lifting 80 to 100 percent again bro ?
Did you do an open hernia surgery or laprascropic ?
I had inguinal hernia surgery with the mesh. I noticed once I started lifting again I'd get some muscle soreness in the lower ab region where the mesh was placed. So I just made sure not to overdo it and give the area adequate time to rest before I'd lift again. I guess that soreness is normal. The muscle there also feels tight. I'll just have to restrengthen and stretch it slowly with time.
Even I had a hernia surgery. I want to start working out I want to know if pull up will put pressure on hernia again.
Did you have open surgery or laparoscopic or robotic assisted laparoscopic?
I had a lakroscopic heria repair 4 weeks ago. Pain was ok. Could walk normal pretty fast. After 2,5 weeks I started working out super light. After 3 weeks now I got the corona virus... But all in all the recovery seems to go very well for me. But now there're two questions for me:
How soon after did you start to lift heavy?
If you get suture and not mesh it almost definitely will come back
what do you mean coughing? while standing or sitting?coughing while lifting?? ??
So what back dumbbell exercises do you recommend since Single Arm rows are no bueno?
Sneezed hard in my sleep, felt a knife. Normally, I always brace my core, but I was sleeping. Bilateral hernia it is! My six packs and strong core did not save me :-(
Like wise here . I’m on day 1
Why is there no comments?
You mentioned a couple of exercises that you avoid now post surgery because you were concerned they put too much strain on the area. What about Turkish getups with kettlebells? Are those dangerous as well?
Extremely dangerous post surgery.
Going to do surgery tomorrow. Open with mesh (
I’m 4days out of open inguinal hernia. It sucks
@@YOMAMAA1how are yall doing now im on second day and want to know how fast i can get back to work
I'm gonna need a specialist, not just a general surgeon. I have not only bilateral inguinal hernia, but an umbilical hernia AND diastasis recti. Found specialist surgeon. Does laparoscopic with mesh with DR repair. The price we pay for years of lifting, huh?
What about side raises for shoulders with a little bent forward?
Hellow yes I did baby my heriia repair for one year but did some work but now I want to build my Uper legs I have an inguinal hernia and a bodybuilder and I'm still have pain after one year how can I build my legs again I have no problem or pain with my upper body can some help me on this
Can you do hanging exercises like pull ups afterwards?
I'm on my second day post-surgery and it feel really painful when trying to stand up or lay down. 😭
I’m on day 18. Around day 8-10 is when you start feeling normal. I still can’t lift heavy but other than that I feel amazing now.
@@JavedKhan26872 what do you mean you can’t? What happens when you try? Can you explain. I’m 7 weeks out and I’m able to lift pretty heavy now.
@@JavedKhan26872 you also probably have the old style of mesh of it was in 2006. I have heard there were some law suits and the new mesh is different.
It will get better been there
It happens bro
is grip strength exercises safe ?
What's type of hernia surgery open or laproscopy
I made the mistake to baby my hernia because I wanted to avoid tearing it again. But I’m good today

I am getting inguinal hernia surgery
Super sketch out that it's going to affect my everyday
is doing upper body body weight isometrics safe ?
Bro can i start weight training after hiatus hernia surgery?..
Bro, my life really sucks, before surgery i was diagnosed by right side inguinal hernia and i saw many bodybuilders who are lifting perfectly fine after the surgery, i was highly motivated and went for a surgery and unluckily dr found that my left side is also weak but it’s not swelling so not going for a surgery, they said you don’t have to lift weight for life in order to cure yourself for second surgery
Hahhaa oh god how can i survive without gym for life
Now my parents advise and dr advise don’t do gym for life because you will develop the left one and if you went for second surgery in 25 then how will you manage in you 50s
I have met hundred of peeps saying bro you will have issue while intercourse
Don’t know what’s going on!!
How did your hernia pop out brother??
I see that most of you (if not all) had a labaroscopic surgery. Unfortunately, mine will be a open surgery (take it or leave it). What can I expect in terms of pain and recovery?
Watch this video... I literally had open surgery
@@ColossusFitness Thank you, I didn't realize it.
Will I ever B same.

Anyone who is a daily aggressive swimmer and had hernia surgery, when was normal swimming back. Thanks.
ab wheel?
Idk I’m not trying to be funny but does affect your private area I heard it shrinks I’m not sure that’s true. But I am wondering because I need a surgery as well in my groin.
Good 👍 luck
So it sounds like he specifically avoided the Shouldice Hospital because someone in his family had a bad experience with it? He considered no-mesh surgery and chose against it.
I avoided Shouldice because of a my fathers bad experience yes. Saying so, I have heard other people have great experiences there. As for the no-mesh, my surgeon advised against laprospic unless it was a second surgery. This was just my experience and I would definitely consult multiple doctors and surgeons and see what is best for you.
Are you able to share your father’s negative experience? Did he have a recurrence? I’m debating between shouldice and mesh.
Hi bro
Probably stupid question. I noticed you're wearing a weight belt in your videos when lifting. Obviously cuz your lifting heavy but is it also to prevent another hernia? You know does it become sort of a mindset like "this will help prevent another one."
Post 3 weeks after two inguinal hernia surgery’s and went to the gym today and did some light machine training on legs and back. Second week I mostly did the same and did light chest and shoulder workouts. Im curious if anyone else felt very sore in the abs after 3 weeks post surgery.
I’m at 2 weeks post surgery-itching to get back! Just wondering if you’ve had any issues with fatigue and how you’re progressing now.
@@tonyo8171 hi bro how was your recovery
@@rajav4144 ..Hey Raja…yes all is great. I was back to training 5 weeks to the date of the surgery. I spent 2 weeks at about 50 percent and progressed steadily from there. A month after surgery I was back to the old regimen. I must admit that occasionally I encounter a slight twinge at the surgery sight but I hear that’s normal. I hope you are doing well.
Ela gianni pos paei ?? Yes I feel tense and tight in abs even two months after surgery unilateral inguinal hernia .. tell me details
How long does it take to recovery before can workout again?
I just had left inguinal robotic mesh, surgeon said do not lift anything over 10lbs for 4 weeks.
Just did mine today! Right laproscopic inguinal hernia.
I did mine yesterday, dam those first days hurts so much to stand up and walk a little...
Thanks for that, reassuring 👍
Had surgery for one side about 9 months ago. 6 months ago I started doing a bro split but avoided my legs for fear, babying my core as you say. My surgeon said the other side wasn’t damaged but to be cautious, so as I consider starting very light squats finally, the small detail that you only had one side repaired makes me feel a little less anxious.
I had bi lateral laparoscopic surgery in March 2022. One side it didn't work unfortunately. I had to have one side redone Dec 2022 with open surgery. I just got released this week. February 2023 to start lifting slowly. Fingers crossed.
How’d it go
Hownu feeling now
@rh1107 I feel great. It feels awkward sometimes like a ghost pain. It's not painful by anymeans just feels weird. Haven't had any problems after second surgery
you went private yet didn't pay anything. Huh?
