    Greetings, darklings,
We have strayed, ever so slightly, from the familiar shadows of nursery rhymes and fairy tales to venture into a realm of ghostly tales. This spectral journey into the world’s oldest ghost stories was the very tale you chose in our Halloween poll, and I trust you shall find it both enchanting and chilling. Tell me, have you ever encountered a ghostly spectre of your own?
    Yours, in darkness and discovery,
    L x

Yes. An elderly man who died in an auto accident near his house, the house that my ex and I just bought. He made his presence known to me by slamming doors shut and immediately opening them again. For some reason he didn't frighten me. I was up a ladder, painting, when this happened, and I quipped: "Do something useful if you plan on sticking around." He did. He protected me by scaring my abusive ex and his interfering cousin by locking them into a bathroom, at different times. In both cases I wasn't home when these incidents happened, and responded to their terrified yells to let them out when I returned. I easily opened the door to find each of them ashen. They were locked in for hours. They said that every time they turned the doorknob to open the door, someone would turn it in the opposite direction. Both thought I was responsible. My grocery shopping bags proved I was not. The cousin stopped "dropping in" to check on me. When I separated from my ex, the old man appeared for a moment, gazing at me through the kitchen window. I thanked him for scaring two people who posed a danger to me.

What an incredible story! It sounds like the old man took his role as protector quite seriously, especially in those moments when you needed it most. The way he kept your ex and his cousin at bay is both eerie and oddly reassuring-it’s as if he was making sure you knew he was on your side. Thank you so much for sharing such a powerful experience! 🖤

      Beautifully crafted as usual !
Being a non believer and totally accepting that death is natural, terminal process , with neither longing nor need for the concept of an after life, totally frees you from such deluded, anxiety inducing tales. There is so much peace of mind to be gained by just accepting such a natural process, like all other living things around us.

    • @theseustoo
      @theseustoo 3 місяці тому +3

@@IRSA1 Agreed! In fact I find the notion of non-existence rather restful. If nothing else one will be beyond all pain, all trouble, and all strife, which are the hallmarks of our earthly lives.
I think it was for this reason that religions felt obliged to concoct such fairy-tales as heaven and hell in order to both frighten and simultaneously cajole the gullible into believing their nonsense!
In about 40 minutes it will be Hallowe'en here in the Wonderful Land of Oz... I hope you have a wonderful day! Best wishes from Down Unda!

In 2004, I graduated from college, and our class attended graduation ceremonies in the Tacoma, Washington, Tacoma Dome. We donned our robes behind the stage and prepared to troop out to receive our diplomas. None of my family (I thought) was attending this event. As we walked in a line before the instructors. I happened to look upward to my right to the seats. I saw my mother standing there, in a pose that I had photographed many years ago. What was a shock was the realization that my mother had passed away a few years before, so logically, she could not be standing there! Yet there was not a doubt in my mind that she stood in the balconies above me. Believe in ghosts & spirits? Oh yes, I do.

I have a bit of a ghost story myself. It doesn’t involve me but my first wife. One night I was having a really hard time breathing and she had to take me to the emergency room (severe asthma attack), anyway on the way there she said she had a dream about my aunt. This aunt had died two years before I met my wife. She described her perfectly even right down to her physical stature and the apron she always wore. There’s absolutely no way she could’ve known those things unless she actually met her personally.
Another instance was the night my mom died. She popped up out of bed about 1:30 and told me mom‘s dead. She said she got a cold shiver and she knew she was gone. A few minutes later, my sister called me and told me that she had passed. I think she was very sensitive to the world around her and could pick up on things that most people could not.

Many years ago (1950's), our next door neibour had an experience one night. Her son kept waking up and screaming about something at the bottom of his bed. One night, she had got so fed up with this that she went into the bedroom, opened the window, and shouted at whatever it was to leave. She swore that something moved, and from that night on, her son slept alright. The estate, Mincherry Farm, Oxford, was built on an old Priory, and there were other rumours of ghost sightings.

There was an old ghost story passed down through my family, dating to the days of the Civil War.
My third great grandmother (who I’ll refer to as grandmother for simplicity’s sake) had two older brothers who enlisted to fight the Confederates. Because they were marching and fighting, it wasn’t unusual for letters to take weeks or even months to reach the people back home. By the time the story takes place, their parents and sister (who was 15) hadn’t gotten word for at least three months.
One night, there was a fierce summer storm. The kind that results in shingles being ripped off the roof and tree limbs being torn off.
As my grandmother tried to sleep, she listened to the sounds of the storm. She was just about to doze off when she heard one of her brothers whispering her name. Thinking it was her imagination running wild, she tried to ignore it.
Then the covers were yanked off her (something her brothers used to do whenever she slept in). She sat up and as the lightning flashed, she saw her brothers standing before her, dressed in their Union blue uniforms and covered in wounds.
She screamed. Her parents ran in, carrying a lit candle and wondering what happened. The brothers had vanished.
As Grandmother tried to explain why she screamed, there was a loud crash of thunder and a resounding crash from the parents’ room.
There was a large dead tree outside the parents’ bedroom. Lightning had struck one of the limbs and it had fallen onto the roof, causing it to collapse. The branch and roof had landed right on the spot where their bed was. The bed was completely destroyed. If they hadn’t woken up, they most likely would’ve been killed.
Sadly, some weeks later, the family did receive word that both brothers had been killed in the line of duty two months before.
Grandmother and her parents believed (as do I and most of my family) that the brothers had returned to save their parents.

I was a kid when I saw my first ghost story on TV. Excited, I went to my father with questions and he sat me down. He said, very quietly and firmly, there is no such thing as a ghost or goblin. He also explained why humans enjoy making up these stories (means of control) and that I would be smart to understand this. Bottomline, he did such a great job that I never had an interest in ghosts after that talk. As an adult, I sometimes think about all the fun I missed by being so grounded. Halloween is just another day for me.

The story of Gilgamesh and Enkidu could also be cited as the first story to contain reference to a Bigfoot or Sasquatch - a hairy anthropoid - as Enkidu is described as a wild man who lives out on the steppe, part man, part beast, covered in hair and stronger than any human. He lives with the wild animals, drinking alongside them from water holes and streams, until in desperation to stop the inconvenience he is causing trappers a temple prostitute is sent from the city to seduce him, after which he is shunned by his former friends, the wild animals. Forced to live among civilized people he is given the job of looking after sheep, protecting them from wolves and lions, a task that his great strength, being part animal himself, make him well suited. Later he goes on to encounter the King, Gilgamesh, and after their initial combative hostility they become friends setting off on adventures. Enkidu's name would appear to mean the creation of Enki, the Sumerian god of freshwater, who presided over the Abzu, a supposed subterranean aquifer from which wells, springs and rivers emanated. It's interesting how, like ghosts, similar characters have appeared in cultures and legends down throughout the ages.

      @KeithPrince-cp3me 3 місяці тому

@Anonymous-km5pj I've looked into this and so far I can find no definitive evidence to corroborate this, and there's lots of fake news around about it. One question is how would you know the tomb of some important mesopotamian ruler was that of Gilga (mesh simply means hero)? It would have to bear some kind of inscription to make it conclusive. Also there's the fact of Gilga himself. Was the tale based on a real Gilga, king of Uruk (in modern day Iraq)? The evidence is contrary as while a Gilga appears in a list of kings dating to perhaps 1000 years before the Epic began being written down indicating he did exist on the other hand his rule was said to have lasted an implausible long time, hundreds of years, so is the whole list, including Gilga, fabricated, or was he a real historical ruler whose reign became heavily fictionalised but with a kernel of reality?

When I was young, about 10 or so, my Great grandad died. About 5 or 6 months later, I was in town . It was a Saturday so the street was quite crowded. I was just outside of the cinema when I heard my name being called. I turned around, thinking it might be a friend of mine, but didn't see anyone I recognised; what I did see was an old man on an old pushbike, and, as I turned back to the original direction, I thought, " That was Grandad!". I turned back again, but the cyclist had vanished without a trace.

Yeah most ghost sightings can be explained. Most apparitions or ghost sightings happened in the damp buildings . Or in the forest area in night . These are mainly refraction of light, when light coming from different direction get scattered by moisture in the damp air which creates an illusion of ghost.

I worked in a hospital back in the 80's and one day I was taking stock of what was in Operating Room 3 and what it needed in case there was an emergency during the night. As I busied myself with the list, I became aware that I was being watched. So I turned my head and a middle-aged woman with grey and blonde hair and blue gray eyes was standing by the door and where the code blue alarm was located. The woman said, "can you help me?" I turned towards the figure and said, "Excuse me?" No sooner were the words out of my mouth the figure vanished. Some weeks later I was hanging out with the OR Nurses and one of them started telling the tale of the Code Blue light and alarm started going off in OR-3 at 3: am. I shared my encounter, and most didn't believe me, but that changed when I described the woman I saw. The nurses got uneasy and changed the subject. No idea if my description told them who the ghost was, or if they had seen the same spirit. This was the first ghost I've seen. but it wasn't the last. Thanks for reading my Novella.

True story. I stayed one summer as a kid at a haunted campground. I got to know the son of the owners, and he swore the place was under a curse, being built on top of a Native American graveyard. I didn't believe him at first, I've seen that movie before, but during a hike in the woods I came across a chain link fence which I used to haul myself up a steep incline. I got to the top, looked around, saw nothing or nobody, and started walking back. There, on top of the fence, was an animal skull, maybe a rabbit. Noone was around, and I had touched every inch of the fencetop on the way up so couldn't have missed it. Never solved that mystery. The rest of the summer was fine, but you can bet I didn't go back in those woods.

I was just a kid when this happened. No older than 5. I was upstairs using the bathroom but the bulb was out so I left the door open. While I was finishing up, a deep and eerie male voice called my name. I turned around and found no one there and when I told my mom she told me to stop making up stories.
Jumping ahead to 2010, when I was in college. My class was in the main hall but we weren't alone. We were seeing flashes of light on the stage at the top of the hall and horrifying spectres walk to the centre of the stage and vanish. One student was floored upon entry by a force he couldn't explain. He just felt weak and then collapsed. We used the hall many times before but that day must have been the anniversary of a death to make ghosts haunt us

One nursery rhyme that always makes me think of ghosts is:
As I was going down the stair,
    I met a man who wasn't there.
    He wasn't there again today,
    I wish, I wish he'd stay/go away.
If you ever find out where that came from (other than my ghoulish playground friends) I'd love to know!

I grew up in two haunted houses. The first one everyone agreed that unexplained things happened even the former owers agreed it was haunted. However, the second house is the one that only my mother and I had experiences in and we had to be careful not to talk about it in front of my father cause it was his family house. Dad's grandparents built it and it was in the family for a little over ninty years, so we're talking about family members that were paying us a visit from time to time. My dad wouldn't have been open to that at all if you know what I mean.

Wonderful. And yes. I do have a tale of a sort-of encounter with the spectral realm.
Both of my siblings passed away a few years ago. My brother in 2019, and my sister in 2020. They were both cremated and I have their ashes in very nice urns. The thing is in life, they both smoked, and every once in a while I get the distinct smell of cigarette smoke in my apartment. And none of my immediate neighbors smoke, so it isn't drifting in through cracks on outside doors. And, it's not throughout the apartment, but usually only in the room I'm in.
Another encounter I've had doesn't involve me directly, but rather the dogs in my life. My boon companion pug passed in 2021 and I have his ashes here as well. I started fostering for a local pug rescue in 2022, and quite literally at least one of the pugs I've kept will at least once or twice stare at the little "shrine" I've made for him. And it's never barking, but an intense stare at his ashes. I even had one quite recently suddenly stand up in the bed and he started barking at the open door to the bedroom, but wouldn't go chase off whatever he was barking at.
Another time, my now fosterfailed pug, was sitting over by my sibling's ashes and suddenly snapped her head in the direction of the urns, her whole body tensed, and she started intensely staring at them. After a couple of minutes of this she suddenly relaxed, and came over to my recliner wanting up in my lap.
She's never exhibited that behavior since, nor has she ever paid the slightest attention to my last pugs ashes.

That’s a deeply moving story. The subtle signs from your siblings and your beloved pug make it seem as though their presence is still with you, offering little reminders of the bond you share. The way animals react to these moments can feel like they’re sensing something beyond our own perception. Thank you for sharing such a personal and poignant encounter. 🖤

Jewish culture has some very old ghost stories as well. The Hebrew Bible describes a kind of seance where the spirit of a dead prophet is brought back so the king can ask for his advice (he wasn't pleased at all about being summoned). The Talmud also has ghost stories. The original story that Corpse Bride is based on is an old Yiddish folktale.

What a lovely haunting. Exquisite as usual. As it happens I do have a ghost tale, but it's quite long. In the early 1980's I lived in a haunted mansion in the Leeds section of Northampton, Massachusetts. (USA) The brick mansion had three stories and sat upon a small hill. It was built in the mid 19th Century by a local industrialist. At Halloween the parties at the haunted mansion were famous far and wide. Many claimed to see the ghost of a young woman sitting in the window seat at the top of the oak paneled stairwell. All the rooms were wood lined from floor to ceiling and each had a fireplace. I had positioned my bed upon the floor in front of my fireplace below a triptych window where the full moon would cast it's light. There were many nights when my room would suddenly grow cold and I could sense a heavy presence. I would crawl into bed , pulling the covers over my head and say "Just let me sleep". I would feel a cold energy move across my bed but it did no harm. One Halloween, after many guests had left, one women began telling of her connection to the spirit world as a medium. I asked her to come up to my room and tell me what she felt. I placed a candle in a glass cup in my fireplace. This woman knelt in front of the fireplace and within minutes began swaying and rocking and moaning "it's cold, so cold". Then she began to cry out "My baby ! My Baby! My baby, after which she let out a blood curdling scream and collapsed. At that very moment the glass holder shattered and the candle went out. When she came to she had no memory of what happened, but said someone was taking her newborn child. Later we researched the history of the Mansion and discovered that 1888 there was a famous blizzard that dumped eight feet of snow. The roadways were impassable. We theorized that the ghostly women in the window seat had given birth during that blizzard and had died due to lack of medical attention. The ghost that haunted my bedroom some nights was of an older man who we believed was the Industrialist and father of the child. There's more but I'll leave it there.

Pretty crappy of that girls parents to burn her remains when she just wanted to come back and 'snuggle' with some random dude.
Wonder what they'd have done is it was their son who had miraculously returned 'by the will of the gods'?

Sounds to me that they had buried the poor girl alive, and she came back to the house, but died properly the third night, after which they burned the body.

A Christmas Carol was paraphrased from Pliny? And I thought modern progressives were bad. Didn't expect Dickens to be a plagiarist.

Fascinating observation! While A Christmas Carol has its own original flair, the idea of a ghost rattling chains and guiding people toward change does stem from Pliny’s tale. But Dickens certainly knew how to breathe new life into the concept! 🖤

My house has creaky floors. When I first bought it, I would be in the basement doing the laundry, and I could hear the floors creak above me like someone was walking through the house. I had been told that the man who owned the house had died at the kitchen table. So I called out his name and told him if he was looking for his wife that he should look for her elsewhere as she had passed away. My floors still creak when I walk on them but I have never heard that again while in the basement. Don't know that I believe in ghosts, but I would like to believe that they do exist.

Another really good video, I love the visuals and the fact nothing is ever repeated, that's good script writing and production.
I think you can go much further back. Its interesting that the cultures of Asia, who migrated South to Australia and Polynesia 50k years ago and North to Siberia and across the bearing land bridge to North America, all the way down to South America; All share a similar belief in the omnipresence of ancestors, always watching the living and occasionally returning to their family homes. Thats why many indigenous nations believe in the spirit world. This goes right back to before we left Africa. Although there is not much evidence of shamanism that's survived in African rock art, there are to this day, many practices performed for the ancestral spirits that such as leaving favourite food or gifts for the dead.
I was told by an old African man "don't cut down the big old trees or the spirits of your ancestors won't be able to find their way home"

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment! Ghosts do seem to be an intrinsic part of us, as though they’ve always been woven into our human history. For this video, I focused on the very first recorded ghost stories-naturally starting with those from the earliest civilizations that developed writing. But, as you pointed out, these ideas of ancestors and spirits likely go back much further, passed down orally across countless generations and cultures. It’s remarkable to think that the ‘oldest’ ghost story is just the oldest recorded one; who knows what tales echoed through the ages long before that? Thank you for helping bring this broader perspective! 🖤
