    My father was an amateur historian and told me a little about Timothy Dexter when I was young. He called him "An idiot Savant who could sell snow to an Eskimo."
    I had mostly forgotten about him until watching this video. This helped me to understand what my father meant.
    Thank you for creating it.

    The main lesson I get from him, is that he was a man of action. He had ideas and carried them out. The logic might have been daft, but luck prevailed. I've had lots of 'clever' ideas, but didn't act on them and missed opportunities, which is it's own kind of stupid.

      The only one that wasn't, was gathering and shipping the cats - but cats are far from the optimal predator for rats, as they can become too big for cats to deal with.
      Cats are much better against mice.

    Oh I learnt all about Timmothy Dexter from Sam O'Nella Academy. I’m glad you’re covering him too. It’s such a bonkers story. At some point you’re thinking is he actually smart or just stupid lucky? Cause he got stupid lucky more than a few times. Is it all dum luck or at some point he actually did make a deliberate decision that was business smart? Joey Wheeler must be related to Timmothy Dexter if he’s that lucky😹

    • @aramisscabott6747

      I believe Timothy Dexter was a very unpopular man. And tho he camed from a very uneducated origins I have the sensation his story has been exaggerated by his detractors.
      This is just a conjecture and I would love if everything happened as it was narrated and his whole fortune came from a very fortunate string of unlikely luck strikes. But I do know humans tend to ridicule their enemies when they get to tell their stories so I welcome the story with a bit of skepticism.
      Definitely would watch a movie about it.

    • @gabbor2904
      @gabbor2904 11 днів тому

      @@aramisscabott6747 I made a 10 minute research into the topic and concluded that apart from the whale bones all other transactions mentioned here and on wikipedia easily could be well calculated business decisions. I was unsure about the coal first but then looked up the strike lasted for a year so plenty of time to get the news and hear about the higher prices to send a shipment. It seems he had some interest in the west indies so he must have some information on trade ships heading towards china to assume an interest on mittens etc. The cats are an easy one and the bed warmers also could be based on preliminary information where he spotted the opportunity. So I agree with your comment completely. Still I find it fascinating regardless of it was luck or talent. I myself couldn't sell a gold bar for profit even if I got it for free. :)
