Thanks for the shoutout bud! I’m still doing the storage unit thing to this day and I echo everything you said in this video. It works in a pinch but definitely has its drawbacks. Keep on keeping on Adam!

I got a Storage Unit back in 2013, Kid working at the front told me it would be okay...
First time jamming in there, Manager comes by and gives me the No-Go.... It was sick.

2:53 Heads up to anyone jamming in a storage unit; neodymium magnets and moving blankets will change your life! Use the magnets to hang the blankets, and listen to the difference before and after.

There is a place in Denver called rockit space that is basically this except it's for musicians. House gear in the space, rent by the hour, terrific staff, tons of other local bands jamming and hanging out. Pretty sick spot.

I used to rehearse at rocket space briefly while I was living in the area! I’ve since moved out of state. But the concept is great and I’ve seriously considered structuring a business around the same model. 😎

Here in South Texas we had a Storage Depot that allowed bands to practice, and it was amazing! It lasted about 6-8 years or maybe longer before they were bought out by another company that didn't allow it. The last unit I shared with 5 other people, which brought the payments down to $25-$30. We had 24 hrs access, and I was easily practicing 4-5 nights a week. We had to share drum kits, but it was fine since the other drummer and I had similar kits and setups. I truly wish we can get something like that again, since even before Covid, you could truly see how much it was affecting the music community not having a spot to practice.

Wish there were spots like storage units, for musicians that are below $120 a month! A great business idea for anyone that wants to take it and run! The musician community will greatly appreciate it!! 🙏

I think I've seen something like that abutting Revival Drums in Portland, OR! Might have been just practice rooms though.

@@Merlincat007 yeah, we've got a bunch of rehearsal spaces and stuff like that here in nashville. But if there was some sort of 100-150 room/unit, that you rent by the month and is protected for musicians. That would be so cool, or maybe that's what you're talking about. 😁

I live in Minneapolis and im so lucky to have found a storage unit that allows me to play. The manager is super chill and even helped me cross an extension cord across the place so I can have power 😂 all for under $100 a month

If you're in a city sharing with a band is the best move. Right now I'm in a space, my band and another band share it and I pay $75 a month. This is in Chicago as well which is more expensive than most places so you could probably pay even less in smaller cities. They use the space 3 times a week and I can practice everyday if I want to. Highly recommend this way.

I practiced 8-12 hrs every day last year, had my old place in the country, now I rent out the space for 20 bucks a week play 4-6 hours now. But with more focused attitude because of the time restraint

Yeah. This is a tricky situation. I had to do something like this to, but what I did was. Buy an electronic kit and put my acoustic kits in air controlled storage. Then in December 2020. Someone broke into my storage and stole all my acoustic drums and hardware $7500 dollars worth gone.

Every. Single. Storage Unit. I've called so many and not a single one is climate controlled, nor do they have outlets in them. I don't wanna call up a place and be like: "hey, oh you don't have outlets? Okay then lemme run an extension cord across your property so I can use your power for cooling and heating etc." That's always a guaranteed no from the people who own these units. I can't find any alternative, and I'm losing my mind

    • @donnie6046
      @donnie6046 2 роки тому +1

Hey there, not sure if you are still looking for a solution, but I rent a non climate controlled storage unit with no outlets that I use for a drum practice space and just use a cheap 120v ac battery bank I found on amazon to power a fan, mixing board, and a light. Not ideal, but works pretty well and is much better then nothing.

Okay story time… I have a pearl export drum set . I had to grow up and get my own place so me and my now girlfriend rented a condo in Buffalo New York . Sooo obviously I couldn’t bring my acoustic drum set so I bought a Roland td17kvx electronic drum set. Awesome freaking set by the way and is super super quiet compared to any other electronic kit I’ve tried due to them being mesh drum heads . So that was about 2,300 after tax. So today I wake up to an email from our property manager saying . That multiple people complained about the loudness of my drums . And that no tenant can have sound bars, speakers of any kind or musical instruments of any kind . Soo I’m pretty bummed right now because drumming is my passion and I spent all of this money to (please) my neighbors and be courteous . I also play at roughly 4-6pm so it’s not like it’s super late either. Unbelievable. Nothing is ever good enough it seems like. Any suggestions on places that I should look into ?? Thanks ! -Mike

Don’t think of this as a “sound” problem. Think of it as a “vibration” problem. Your drums, whether electronic or acoustic, are vibrating through the walls and the floor with every stroke. Even if your neighbors can’t hear the drums, they can certainly feel them. That’s why they complained, and they likely aren’t lying.
Aside from spending 5 figures on illegal construction methods in a rented space, there is no possible way you can make your kit inaudible to those who share a wall, ceiling, or especially a floor with you.
The only ridiculous hack that comes to mind would be playing with your kit ON TOP of a mattress, trampoline, or pile of pillows. Something that would completely absorb the energy, and transfer virtually none of it to the building.
Renting a separate practice space is your best option.
